Hi Arden and All ---
When you have those long trains on long grades and big curves you encounter
a lot of what the real trains do. Slack run-in / out can be enough to rip
coupler pockets right off the cars... Train handling has to be gentle!
Although I haven't tried it on the new SLE&P yet, I was able to pull 60 cars
on the original version with 44" radius curves and 3% grades thanks to 5
mighty F units. The new SLE&P should be a lot more amenable to such
trains, although the sidings are set up to hold only 30 cars plus power.
Currently I have a couple of 35 car trains plus power for testing... I add
a couple of extra ounces to PRS cars just so they can be mixed with brass or
vintage (wood / pot metal) cars and still take the slack action (yes, I use
Kadee 802/808's). No brakes on these model cars to keep the train
stretched!
Happy New Year!

I hate to add weight to this list of drivel, but for once Fast Eddie
is in the minority & correct. {:-)
The mighty UP agrees with the once "almost mighty" NYC - excess
freight car weight is a huge DRAG. {:-)
50% of the NMRA wt. is ideal from my tests. I run a 40-car train of
PacRail PFE reefers with no added weight. Trying to scale the
prototype wt. is foolish. Excess weight only partially offsets bad
track & wheels. There are forces on trains that most mr's have no
clue, unless they run 40+ car trains (or 30 of Don's flatcars.) Try
pulling a long train with 3 oz. & 10 oz. cars mixed. Then you will
find out the quality of your trackwork. My hat is off to the
prototype hauling 100+ heavy car trains.
