Others may be more knowledgeable on these cars, but I can remember an article 
on them in the early 1960's, I think RMC. They were something new at that time, 
and I had seen few, if any, of them in my train watching activities at the time.

Later, in the mid-1960's, the refineries that "my" railroad worked still used 
the older style tank cars (I actually saw a tank car with a 1915 build date 
still in revenue service in 1965!)

In 1970, shortly after my promotion to conductor and subsequent force 
assignment (January, 1970) on one of those refinery-switching locals, they 
showed up like the proverbial herd of locusts at one refinery. Another refinery 
had been using the shorty versions for about a year.
