I remember a conversation in the 70's about the first NASG  
standards committee chairman who proposed the code 110 wheel for "S".   
I forget his wheel, but I was told that things go so heated up over  
the direction of standards that he quit S gauge.  One reason for  
considering the code 110 is that HO wheel contour tools could be used  
to make S scale wheels.  There was a real lack of wheelsets in the  
60's and by using the HO tool, the cost for new wheels would be  
reduced as it would be easier to convince an HO mfg. to make S  
wheelsets using the same tools.  At least that is what I was told.
