Also when having applied your patch as well, at least one of the tests in
which you have observed a segfault works fine:

Actually note that with your patch it is only 3.5 seconds, while with my
patch it is only 5.5 seconds.
I am now running all long tests. I have read your patch, and it looks very
reasonable. I'd appreciate if you could re-run the tests with
sage-4.8.alpha3.
