Well, the way it looks to me, the database _is_ being thrown away,
so why not go all the way?

I won't say anything about the likelihood of "future success". But
there's one thing that I don't remember having been said here yet.
We're all worried that the reputation of SAP DB will deteriorate as
soon as the word "MySQL" appears within a hundred meters of it.
Could it be that MySQL AB is expecting that the name "SAP DB" will
improve MySQL's reputation?

Well, since you're apparently going to eviscerate the codebase
anyway, that's probably for the best. That way, we can keep using
-- and promoting -- the un-rebranded releases without having to
spend too much time explaining "yes, it's called MySQL now, and
it's worth exactly the same as MySQL, but this is from before that
-- no, no, that doesn't mean it's old and obsolete...".

That's not the fault of the software, but of SAP, who haven't done
anything to attract attention to the software.

Let me get this straight: "via an interface that they know and
understand"? You're not actually planning on removing the current
management tools and substituting your far inferior mysql frontend,
are you?

Sorry, but I think you're missing the point. We don't like the
database just because it's called "SAP DB". We like it because it
is good. Very good, indeed. And it appears that there'll be not
much left of that, once you are done with your "integration."
