Maybe you should publish the MkScidPieces script I sent you.
This does this scaling and stuff automatically one a dir is
provided containing the files named B.png R.png, Q.png etc.
for black and b.png, r.png, q.png etc. for white.

Ok, one could add the base64-call at the end of the script.

Wouldn't a dialog like for tactics training be more
suitable? It would allow for unlimited number of images and
be quite easy to select from. Additionally as the rest of
scid uses the idea of using certain dirs to structure data
(I like it, just the dir should be userselectable via the
GUI) it is like the rest of the system.

One could imagine to set all directories via one single
dialog to shorten the menues and easing up entry. Maybe even
a "master path" could be used, so it could look like:

---------[ Directory Setup ]--------------------------------

    Master : /opt/chess/share/scid [Select] [?]

Use automatic subdirs below Master [n]

    Bases : /home/arwagner/scid/Tactics [Select] [?]
    Books : /home/arwagner/scid/Books [Select] [?]
    Bitmaps: /opt/chess/share/scid [Select] [?]

    Other paths go here...
-------------------------------------------------------------

Something like that. Then one could even use simple drop
down lists to select the square bitmaps and the dialog would
be fairly simple for the user.
