Ah, I see now! I should be more careful before giving "advice"! I spend
more time in "scid vs pc", so I guess did not notice these features
missing in mainline scid 4.6
The second toolbar you speak of is/was the "Navigation bar" or "Main
Button bar". Looking at the config file, I do not see that it even still
exists as an option :( Is it possible the team decided to do away with
the idea of "trial mode" altogether?
That, the lack of the Ask-to-replace popup, and the decision to remove
the pgnscid script, are kinda deal breakers for me.
Again, sorry for being unhelpful!

No - The trial mode is not one of the options on the toolbar. As
stated before, there was a second toolbar in 4.5 that was
automatically generated and had the trial mode. The additional
toolbar in "options" was also in 4.5 but that is a different matter.
The trial mode is important because it is useful to run variations to
explore ideas without actually including them as a pgn variation.
Also, I note that when entering a variation, I am not asked if I want
to replace the main move (even when I have selected "ask me" as an
option). Rather, I need to go a menu below the board and change it to
the main line there. Still, I like the interface and improvements in
4.6. It just needs some functionality tweaking before I can replace
4.5.

Hi!
When you click on Options-> Toolbars, a window should open. There you
can set what items you want to show on the toolbar. It appears that in
version 4.6, it defaults to "None".
Hope that helps!
