please try "delete variation": it works for all the use case you described.

There are many ways to add a move in Scid: mouse click, mouse drag, 
keyboard, engine, play against an engine, tree window, etc...
Plus you may want  to undo a move, or copy a game, export to pgn, 
autoplay, etc...
And in the code you always have to take care that you may be in 
"trial-mode".

Scid 4.6 is faster, stabler, easier to maintain: that's because the code 
is more simple.
An invasive feature like "trial-mode" make things a lot more complex 
without adding value.
I know that habits are hard to give up, but please try the alternatives 
before saying that you cannot live without it.
