Indeed,

Trial mode is a good option, because allows several things, without
registering the moves and once finished the variation, returning to the
position where the variation started.

This can be handy in the following situations:

- When reviewing an analysis, sometimes I wish to know,
¿what will happen with an alternative move?, just to discover why
should not be done. Usually is an oversight on my part or the new
position gives me the idea why the tried move isn't adequate.

- Some chess engines remembers evaluations, an advancing to the end of
a temporal variation, after returning to the start position it allows
the engine to select a better alternate move, that save some time.

- When reading a chess book or a comentary, trial mode allows to follow
a comment presented briefly and return to the position from where the
commentator presents other variations, making cleaner to follow the
   discurse.

On another thought, I have not understood yet, why was necessary to
supress a capability that already worked as expected?
