Re: [CGUYS] Highlighting PDFs
I've had some PDF files that couldn't be printed directly to the Adobe PDF printer (WinXP Pro) - couldn't copy/paste, couldn't save as another file type, couldn't do anything except look at it or print hard copy. Security won. So, a work-around that worked was to print hard copy and then scan the physical printout back into a PDF file. Then I had a file I could work on. The setup was Adobe Acrobat 7.0, which has been OK for what I need, and a Brother 8840DN multifunction printer/scanner/copier/fax, which came with a non-updatable version of ScanSoft PaperPort. If I had had the time, I might have tried to OCR the file, but it was a form with boxes and multiple fonts, and quick and dirty was good enough then. So, maybe some combination of printing and/or OCR could work for you. -Andy Daniel Else wrote: There are various tricks of the trade to recreate files that have various reproduction restrictions. I don't have Adobe Reader on the computer, but with Professional I can print a PDF to an Adobe PDF printer, which may be what is referred to with the Mac. This prints the document to a new file. Does Adobe sales say that a document created in this manner transfers the security restrictions? I'd be willing to play with one of your documents if you want to send it to me outside the listserv (I have Adobe Acrobat 8 running on Windows XP Pro). Dan b_s-wilk [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/13/08 7:46 PM Can the file be printed? On a Mac you can print to Preview, then save again as a PDF. Is there a Windows equivalent you can use? Daniel Else wrote: Mike, if you have someone in the family who qualifies for the Adobe Acrobat Education pricing structure, I'd recommend that you go ahead and purchase AA Professional. It is a terrific discount. That will allow you to do anything you want to a pdf. Dan, Not anything! Turns out that the creator of a PDF file can lock it in such a way as to prevent any markup even by a recipient who uses Adobe Acrobat 3D Version 8, the highest version of Adobe Acrobat. I confirmed this with Adobe's sales. Or do you have a different experience? I'll be purchasing articles and then might have to highlight them. That's why I want to be able to highlight. I might have to print out and highlight hard copy. Run as in cost. You said it up converts...but if nothing is HD what is there to up convert? Up converting dvd players take dvds and push them to 480p AFAIK. But if your source is standard 480i, then it's never going to be better then that. Do standard directv boxes do 480p? Upconverting, when done well, is actually effective. It is not as good as a real higher resolution signal, but it does improve the image. It is done by interpolating. Andy Gallant and Daniel Else STOP! Criminal acts are not allowed on this discussion list. You are committing speech crimes that violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Providing directions for circumvention is a criminal act. If you want to put yourselves in danger of prosecution that is your business, but do it off list. Criminal speech on the list puts the entire list in peril of being shut down. I don't want this to happen. If you continue with criminal speech I will have to protect the list by restricting your ability to post. So please STOP! Dan, I am particularly surprised that someone posting from LOC would so brazenly break the law. Working for one of the primary DMCA arbiters you should know better than the rest of us what the DMCA requires. Michael, if the creator of a PDF file locks it you have to respect that lock. That is the law. Any speech about breaking the lock violates the DMCA. You either respect the lock, find a more open supplier, or apply to the LOC for a waver (I think they accept petitions every 2 years). If you take the long view, not voting for corrupt politicians might help too. Agreed, upconverting really does make a difference. I use an upconverting DVD player and while it doesn't look as perfect as 1080i, it is still quite impressive. It certainly looks a whole lot better than some of the 720 stuff that is being broadcast as HDTV. Richard P. You said it up converts...but if nothing is HD what is there to up convert? [CGUYS] Windows family tree program needed was Mac X
Thanks to those who responded. MacFamilyTree Developed by *Synium Software GmbH* I have tried and didn't feel that it was worth the money. At least until I had tried others. Gramps Which no doubt works on LINUX. Was too complex just to load on a, not up to date , non Intel Mac. The vendor didn't hold out much hope either for running it under Neo Office. Don't need that entertainment. Personal Ancestry Writer IISimple program, not intuitive, more than adequate for what I wanted, worked good after I figured out how to use it. Another case of the developer writing the instructions instead of a user who had just learned. Oh well , seen lots of that. The big downside. After I had semi mastered it and was getting the tree built POOF!. And everthing I had done in four hours disappeared into the either. Very PC like. Which I think will be my next move. It's just sitting here gathering dust.Any recommendations for a tree program that runs on Windows? Thanks, John John H. The DirecTV boxes are HD [not standard], and are connected to HDTVs at 1080p resolution via HDMI. TV is connected to DVD recorder via HDMI [out], but DTV tuner to DVD recorder is component [RGB] [plus toslink] at 720p which is upconverted to 1080i when sent to the TVs. Confusing? Yes, should be easier. Cost: our DVD recorder ranges in cost from $90-160 depending on vendor. HD/Blueray costs a lot more. 15 DVD-RW disks were $15 on sale, down from ~$40 last year--closer to $20 for quality disks this year. DirecTV and all pay TV costs too much, but with satellite and FIOS it's not too hard to negotiate a better deal than advertised in print or online. DTV has a $20/mo discount online; Dish has Cinemax for $1/mo; more if you search. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Windows family tree program needed was Mac X
Any recommendations for a tree program that runs on Windows? I use Family Tree Maker.. one of the earliest to have solid support for pictures, creates huge all-in-one tree on any printer (you might find yourself splicing together dozens of pages), and it handles most anything you can throw at it without having to call tech support and without digging through the manuals (only exception.. married cousins... but it can do it!). It is a favorite in the Genealogy forums that I frequent. The downside: The software is routinely after you to 'upload' your tree to their servers so they can resell your information. This was true before Ancestry.com bought them, and I am sure that it is worse now. Re: [CGUYS] Windows family tree program needed was Mac X
The Family Tree Maker software works with you to create your tree. Every 100 entries you make into the tree kicks off a message asking you to upload your tree to their servers to become part of the World Family Tree (which they then put on to CD's to resell to other program owners, and add to their website for access via subscription.) - Original Message - From: db [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [CGUYS] Windows family tree program needed was Mac X I don't understand what The downside: The software is routinely after you to 'upload' your tree to their servers so they can resell your information. means. (Which is free by the way) In the 1880 census the Mormons have my great uncle as head of household rather than my great grandad, The whole families name is spelled Davies not Davis, my granpa went from Emory to Lenary, and the two neighbors down the holler are included in the household. A good look at the microfiche (GIF) of the original will sort out everything except the Davies, but the only way they except changes is with a gedcom file. They won't go back and look at their own transcription and fix it. Off topic now but what I have learned in the last few weeks is that transcribed public records are full of errors. As well as newspaper articles incorrect at gitgo. You have to take every thing with a grain until it can be verified from another source. I am amazed how much info is out there on line for free. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Highlighting PDFs
Michael, if the creator of a PDF file locks it you have to respect that lock. That is the law. Any speech about breaking the lock violates the DMCA. You either respect the lock, find a more open supplier, or apply to the LOC for a waver (I think they accept petitions every 2 years). I apologize for bringing up the issue and for drawing in others to provide workarounds. Are the files locked? If not, then you can follow suggestions from the list. Even if they are locked, you can request unlocked copies. That's often possible if you sign an agreement not to sell or distribute them commercially. It can be done that way for research purposes.
