[Felvtalk] cat with leukemia to rehome
Hello, I am new to this site so I am not sure if my post made it in your list. I am helping my sister rehome her cats and recently when I had one of the cats neutered I was told he has leukemia. Is anyone looking for a companion animal? He is one yrs old and looks like a Russian blue. Any other suggestions would be great. [Felvtalk] Rehome one-year-old grey cat
Hello, I am trying to find new homes for my sisters cats that she has been taking care of for a year now. The next door neighbor complained and was going to have them picked up by animal control. Therefore I had them brought to my garage by the help of a Cat rescue inc. volunteer. I have been trying to get help for adoption of five cats. Unfortunately I had one of them fixed yesterday and he is diagnosed with feline leukemia. Trying to find a new home for him. Any suggestions? ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Re: [Felvtalk] Advice on annual re-testing and vaccinating
It's probably just a matter of personal choice at this point, but we vaccinated our FelV- cat once a year and we decided not to re-test after the first year of exposure. Honestly, if they are adult cats, and they haven't become FelV+ within a year, its probably a slim chance they will ever become positive. But, I think its up to you and what you feel comfortable with. I felt like the FelV vaccine might be the only thing I could do to protect the negatives at this point. I did not vaccinate my FelV+ kitty. In regards to rabies, I did the first and second round of rabies shots. Have not decided if I will continue. My cats never go outside but you never know I guess. ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
[Felvtalk] Bernie Update
I took Bernie to the vet this morning and did an x-ray. He has a large mass near his stomach/intestine. We have decided not to do chemo and have put him on some steroids and pain medication. He is still eating and purring which is good, but it will only get worse. We will probably put him to sleep Friday or Saturday. Sooner if it gets worse, but I want everyone to be able to be there if they can. For the record: Bernie - Diagnosed FelV+ at 7 months, diagnosed with uveitis at 1 year 7 months, diagnosed with lymphoma about 1 year 8 months. He is the most amazing cat I have ever had. The best personality and made me smile every day. I don't regret one vet bill or day I had with him. I want to thank everyone on this list for their support and knowledge. I really appreciate it and I think all of you are amazing. I will keep you and all your babies in my prayers. Re: [Felvtalk] Bernie - Uveitis
Beth - The eye vet ophthalmologist briefly discussed that there is a small chance the lymphoma could just be in the eye and we could remove the eye. However, he thinks that if it is already in the eye, it is most likely somewhere else in the body. He would want me to do a full body scan to look for lymphoma somewhere else before doing the biopsy on the eye. Maybe I should go for a second opinion? When they do a full body scan, they look for thick areas of tissue. These areas are not necessarily lymphoma...esp in FelV+ cats, it could just be irritation in the intestine or stomach. They have to do a biopsy to make sure. So, potentially, if they find thick tissue, they could do a biopsy, it could be nothing, then i would still have to do a biopsy on the eye to find out if it is really lymphoma. Then remove the eye. I don't know if I want to put him through all of that. No real improvement today. Although he was very interested in the birdies outside this morning which really made me smile. Just trying to enjoy each day I have with him. Thanks, Maria > Maria - > Can they just remove the eye? Re: [Felvtalk] Bernie - Uveitis
Amy - Thanks for the kind words. I re-read your post about your kitty and and the gold colored ring around his eye. When you look at his eye in light, does it look funny like how animals eyes sometimes show up in pictures taken with a flash? That's how we first noticed Bernie's eye issue. He was looking at me and one eye was reflecting really funny while the other was not. He doesn't have a gold colored ring... but there looks like there is a mass up in the corner of the eye. The iris is swollen as well. His eye also had a cloudy film all over the eye, but the steroid eye drops cleared that up. We also tested Bernie for toxo.. it came back negative... and we ran a mycoplasma test as well.. also negative. Did you get your kitty's toxo test back yet? I was almost hoping it was toxo... there is at least an antibiotic for that. I learned this morning from the vet that cat's with lymphoma sometimes have normal blood work. I never knew that. I assumed that the white blood cells would go up. She said depending on the type of lymphoma, the white blood cells may drop, stay the same, or rise. Please keep me up to date on your kitty! I hope he is ok and doing better soon. Maria ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
Re: [Felvtalk] Bernie - Uveitis
I had a conversation with my primary vet this morning about Bernie and his Uveitis/possible lymphoma. I'm not sure what to do. I'm frustrated, sad, angry and I feel like I'm running into walls everywhere. It seems like there are never answers for these cats. It could be one thing, but that is a symptom of something else, we could do this test, but that might not tell us for sure what is wrong. I keep going in circles and the bottom line still is my baby doesn't feel well, and I'm emotionally and financially spent. I want to do something to help him but I don't know what or what will work. His activity appears to be declining each day. Still eating, but this morning he didn't eat his whole bowl of food. To find out if it is lymphoma, we could do a biopsy on the eye, but its risky, and its a hard area to get a good sample. We could go to an internist and have a scan done to see if there are any masses somewhere else in the body. Even if there are, we would still have to do a biopsy to find out if it is lymphoma. His blood work 2 weeks ago was completely normal. I am continuing w/ steroid drops 3x a day. Apparently with Uveitis there isn't usually any pain associated with the eye... so she didn't recommend pain medication at this point. I don't think he is in pain (cats can probably cover this up well though.), he doesn't wince or anything, but he is just not acting like himself. I guess we just take it day by day at this point but I feel helpless like I'm just letting him go. Sorry for the rant, just needed to type to get my thoughts out. Thanks. Re: [Felvtalk] Bernie
Gloria and Sally - Thanks for the feedback. Today Bernie did not have diarrhea, but his activity level is still low. Sleeping Alot! If the diarrhea returns again I think I will have a stool sample tested. When we first got him, before I knew he was FelV+, he would have on and off diarrhea. But he hasn't had that in a long time I didn't think about he pain medication Sally... I'm going to ask my regular vet about that. The eye specialist didn't give me any indication that he could be in pain... just blurred vision. Thanks again for the thoughts and prayers. [Felvtalk] Bernie - Uveitis
Hi everyone - Just asking if you guys could say a little prayer for Bernie (1 yr. 8mos FelV +) He isn't doing well and I'm afraid things could get worse soon. He was diagnosed with uveitis about 2 weeks ago. The iris is still inflamed even though we are using the predisone eye drops 3 times a day. We could do a biopsy and get a sample of the substance to see if it is lymphoma, but as of right now, I don't think I'm going to do it. I don't want to put him through that and there is a chance that the sample would be unusable. The eye specialist also said that if it is lymphoma, it is most likely somewhere else in his body as well. He is eating normally and if you start to play with him he will play a little. But his activity level is low, sleeping alot, and he won't play with his brother. He started having diarreha last night. Also, if he doesnt get his eye drops (One day i could only give it to him once), I noticed he wouldnt eat for about 12 hours and just laid around the whole day. Not sure what else to do...it kills me to see him this way. Thanks ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
[Felvtalk] Mycoplasma
I did a little research on the board for mycoplasma and I noticed that it does seem to be prevalent (as far as i can see from the mailing list) in felv+ cats. My vet suggested I have my felv+ kitty tested. For those of you that have experience with Mycoplasma, can you tell me what symptoms your kitties had? My felv+ cat is a 1 1/2 years old and once a month (Almost exactly every month around the 20th or 21st) he has a bad day. He goes about 12 hours doesn't want to eat, drink, lethargic, runs a slight temperature. Sometimes he will puke, but just a little bit. After those 12 hours he is back to his normal self. These symptoms started pretty much right after I got him... and I thought this was the norm for a felv+ catnot another disease. [Felvtalk] Multi Cat House Protocol
Hello - For those of you with multi-cat households, I was wondering what your vet has recommended in terms of re-testing for FELV in the negative cat. I have been advised to re-test the negative cat once a year for FELV and give the negative cat the FELV combo shot once a year. Re: [Felvtalk] Advice on 9 month old FELV + kitty
My cat had similar issues when we first got him. Get a fecal exam done. Bernie had worms when we found out he was felv+, after he was on meds for that, his diarrhea was better but not totally gone. We did interferon and prescription canned food. That helped. I am now back on dry food, but I still do interferon once a day. He rarely has diarrhea now, but it took a good 3 months to get him back to normal. Diarrhea is a chronic symptom of felv, so its possible he will have it every now and then. ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
[Felvtalk] Good News - Successful Multi-Cat House!
I recently had Brady re-tested for felv, 3 1/2 months after we brought our felv+ kitten into the same household. Brady tested negative on the snap test! The vet told us as long as we keep up with his boosters, he should be fine. We will not test again for felv. Brady was 1 year 3 months when he began living with our felv+ kitten. Brady did have a felv vaccination when he was a kitten. They have separate food bowls, but they share everything else. They also like to groom each other (which I try to stop when I see it, but I'm sure they do it when I am not around) I very glad we decided to keep them both together! ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Re: [Felvtalk] Shots for Felv/Re Testing for Non Felv Cat
It makes me a little upset that research for Felv+ cats has been so wishy washy. I realize it probably all comes down to money and business, but I was also thinking, this disease is sadly a way for shelters to try to control over population of cats. I think its pretty automatic to put felv+ cats to sleep at shelters. Re: [Felvtalk] Shots for Felv/Re Testing for Non Felv Cat
Thank you for all of your opinions and advice. I went ahead with the feline distemper vaccination. Bernie has been totally fine since The vet's plan was to do another shot in 1 month and the final shot a month after that. I think once the kitten series is done, I may stop. Bernie is an indoor cat and the frequent visits to the vet are changing his personality. He is very scared of strangers and car rides now. Additionally, every vet visit adds up... normally it is 1 vet visit fee and the shots... this is 3 vet visit fees and shots. My vet also explained to me that Bernie was more likely to have a reaction to the shot because he is allergic to it rather than from being felv+. I'm sure there are many opinions on that subject though. MaryChristine...you mentioned that research seemed to have stopped for so long and just recently have begun again. Are there any non profit groups out there actively researching this disease? [Felvtalk] Shots for Felv/Re Testing for Non Felv Cat
Hi everyone My kitten Bernie was diagnosed with Felv about 2 months after we got him home from the shelter. He was on interferon for 45 days, retested, and is still positive. When we got him from the shelter he did not have his second set of vaccinations yet. He is now 8 months old. I am taking him to the vet tonight to get the shots. The vet said she would split up the doses so his body could handle them. I think I will go back in 3 weeks and get the rest. I am still a little nervous about him getting the shots and becoming sick. He was symptom free for about 40 days and then he had a bad day where he wouldn't eat. Otherwise, he has been acting like a normal kitten. No more soft stool, good appetite (besides his bad day), good energy. Still give him interferon once a day. Has anyone had an experience with the vaccinations? Is there a good chance he could die from the shots? I know he needs them.. but I am nervous about it. Also, I decided to keep my non Felv cat (Brady) with Bernie. The vet told us to get Brady re-tested in 3 1/2 months. He tested negative the first time. My question is, how often should you have your non Felv Cat tested? I was thinking once a year would be ok? Every 3 1/2 months sounds like too much. Thank you! ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
