You say sbc controls sc7 and that in turn controls the players. What
about setup? Is SC7 able to setup a new i.e sbr player on it's own?
Cause if the controler doesn't interact with the player directly there
must be a way to setup the player via the server. Not sure how that
might work though.

Well hang on a minute, if that error came from Winamp, it's not related
to 'syncing' as we think of it. Try another player such as Foobar just

I've noticed that nscd, utmpd, init, and automountd are all busy little
beavers. SlimServer is a lot busier than I thought but I do use the
SuperDateTime plugin (for weather) and the RSS screensaver. I have a
feeling those are the reasons that the SlimServer filecache is hit as
often as it is.
If you're not afraid of command line, ffmpeg can do just about any
to/from conversion format you like. Just pass -vn to specify no video
out, just audio. Something like this should do it:
ffmpeg -i myfile.vob -ab 128 -ac 2 -ar 44100 -acodec flac -vn
