Re: [AI] A useful addition to Talkback 12.1!

2021-12-27 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Folks, much awaited built-in OCR feature that I was talking about in
Samsung talkback has now come through. Those having the Samsung phones
do not need to do anything special on their end, just click the image
that you receive on WhatsApp and touch the finger on the left bottom
side or on the middle of the screen and all text will be read
automatically. However, one major drawback is that one cannot take the
advantage of navigating this text in the desired granularity mode.

Thanks.

But CSR does have this OCR capability of its own.

I don't think so. People who have not activated their select to speak are
able to use the OCR feature, especially on images and some unlabelled
buttons. Android OS being a part of open source regime, you never know
which phones have what additional features.

There seems confusion here.
the feature you are talking is not talkback feature, rather it's Select to
Speak one. And now, it's part of Android Accessibility package. both
Select to Speak and Talkback are parts of Android Accessibility suite.

In google's words, "Android Accessibility Suite is a collection of
accessibility apps that help you use your Android device eyes-free or with
a switch device.

Android Accessibility Suite includes:
• Accessibility Menu: Use this large on-screen menu to lock your phone,
control volume and brightness, take screenshots, and more.

• Select to Speak: Select items on your screen and hear them read aloud.
• Switch Access: Interact with your Android device using one or more
switches or a keyboard instead of the touch screen - **newly added**
Camera Switches to navigate with facial gestures.
• TalkBack screen reader: Get spoken feedback, control your device with
gestures, and type with the on-screen braille keyboard".

I hope, confusion is clear now.

Still, I am pasting here relevant part of Google help article on using
Select to Speak for OCR purpose with it's URL:

CSR stands for Commentary Screen Reader. This is another alternative to
Talkback developed by some Chinese guys. What I know is that this is a
paid software and comes with many advanced features surpassing Talkback.
What holds me back though is its non-availability on playstore.

Re: [AI] A useful addition to Talkback 12.1!

2021-11-16 Thread Sandesh

Namaskar Vikas and all!

There seems confusion here.
the feature you are talking is not talkback feature, rather it's Select to
Speak one. And now, it's part of Android Accessibility package. both Select
to Speak and Talkback are parts of Android Accessibility suite.

In google's words, "Android Accessibility Suite is a collection of
accessibility apps that help you use your Android device eyes-free or with a
switch device.

Android Accessibility Suite includes:
• Accessibility Menu: Use this large on-screen menu to lock your phone,
control volume and brightness, take screenshots, and more.

• Select to Speak: Select items on your screen and hear them read aloud.
• Switch Access: Interact with your Android device using one or more
switches or a keyboard instead of the touch screen - **newly added** Camera
Switches to navigate with facial gestures.
• TalkBack screen reader: Get spoken feedback, control your device with
gestures, and type with the on-screen braille keyboard".

I hope, confusion is clear now.

Still, I am pasting here relevant part of Google help article on using
Select to Speak for OCR purpose with it's URL:

yet to get this feature, I can't guide you more on this, but many people have
been using this feature.

Thanks for that correction! That's true that it'll work with GBoard only
and since I mentioned that this comes with TB 12.1, so I assumed that
it'll be taken as a Talkback feature only.

Cheers!

one thing is there, this is talkback specific feature, as soon as you
change the screen reader for example start using commentary, this
feature does not work, meaning your Gboard starts working with lift
and type mode.

And when back with talkback, your set feature comes again.

And yes, Thanks for sharing of course.
