Bill,

Yeah, that's verizon's pay as you go rate. $10/day adds up quick. Doing some
research, I can get some European data only sim's for about $35 for 30 days
with about 8GB of data. 8GB should be good enough for keeping up to date with
whatsapp and basic web surfing.
Guess I can check my voicemail and get texts on my main number when I'm near
WiFi. I do have a Boingo account I rarely use. I think they have an App the
will detect and automatically connect to their hotspots. Thinking between that,
public WiFi and a data only SIM, I should be reachable most of the time.

Somebody mentioned WiFi calling, does that really work OK for you, even
domestically?

I don’t use it, but the only time I hear it mentioned is when a WISP customer
calls complaining about WiFi calling, usually dropped or one-way calls, but
that everything else on their Internet connection is fine. For whatever reason,
they usually seem to have a Sprint phone. My conclusion was that WiFi calling
must not be very reliable, so please stop calling your ISP about it. It seems
like people were using it at their house rather than get a microcell.

When I connect to WiFi, I should be able to use WiFi calling with my

So, here is the crazy part. If I get a data only SIM, there will be

Will it detect I have data, but no voice and fail over to WiFi

What Trey says. I go international every couple of months. T-Mobile has free
texting and data internationally. Works fine for my emailing, what’s apping,
and google maps needs. Plus I get free WiFi while I’m flying on delta for free
:). Then I just make WiFi calls from the place I stay and it’s free there.
Otherwise it’s like 25/c a minute. Highly recommend t-mob to anybody traveling
often internationally. A couple of years ago they gave out a summer of free LTE
speeds while traveling in Europe.

Facebook seems kind of like PaintNite, great if you want a 5:1 female:male

Our ad in 2 yellow books is up for renewal, I think it’s only about $100 per

About half the area covered by the 2 books is outside our WISP coverage, and I

You probably want to look at some of the intel high write endurance
SSD's if you're concerned about writes.

For example the intel S4610is rated at 6 PBW (6,000 TB) or roughly 3 DWPD.

Intel P series or optane based products have far higher endurance but
cost is a lot higher.

The only issue with SSDs is the write endurance, and most of them now
have a certain percentage of spare cells to stave that off for a
while. They generally won't go toes up all at once, but will lose
cells, or blocks of cells at some point. You will get more endurance
if you oversize them to minimize cell re-use. If you think you need
1TB, get 2TB, and it will cut cell re-use by 50%.

Way, way faster.

Re: [AFMUG] International cell phone use

2019-01-24 Thread Ken Hohhof
Oh, right, that was another complaint I got from a handful of people trying to
use WiFi calling, their text messages didn’t come through. I figured that was
because SMS uses the control channel on the cell tower and so maybe you
shouldn’t expect it to work. Like people just assume that you can send text
messages to landlines. We do get text messages on our business line, but only
because we have an SMS-to-email gateway configured.

Maybe WiFi calling has matured over the past couple years, I don’t think I’ve
gotten calls about it recently.

Or maybe people have stopped calling their ISP about every problem with every
device they buy and app they use. Haha, just kidding.

I don’t use it, but the only time I hear it mentioned is when a WISP customer
calls complaining about WiFi calling, usually dropped or one-way calls, but
that everything else on their Internet connection is fine. For whatever
reason, they usually seem to have a Sprint phone. My conclusion was that WiFi
calling must not be very reliable, so please stop calling your ISP about it.
It seems like people were using it at their house rather than get a microcell.

Whatever you do, be sure to explore your options. A friend who just spent 3
weeks in Australia & had not really looked into the options spent $10/day for
cell service while there. 21 x $10 =$210. I guess that's not horrible, but I
tend to think about what else I might have wanted to spend that money on.

We have done the $10 a day the last couple of times in Europe. Works pretty
well but there is a limited amount of high speed data per day and then they
slow it down for the rest of the day to 3G. Just have to be careful.

I've used a data only sim in Croatia before. It was unlimited data for
something cheap like $15 for 10 days.

What I don't understand is why people are using whatsapp? No one I know uses it
but everyone I know has Facebook and with messenger and you can chat, call, and
video message. So why go out of the way to download a redundant app like
whatsapp?

I've been on cruises, overseas many times and I either pay Verizon $10 a day
for the roaming or if long term, I buy a sim card just for data. All voice
calls I do over Facebook, our office voip through an android app, or slack.

Anybody here still using ads in the print Yellow Pages? If yes, do you have
any metrics to say if they are working?

Our ad in 2 yellow books is up for renewal, I think it’s only about $100 per
month total, so it would be worth it if we got maybe 1-2 new customers per
year. But as far as I can tell, we haven’t gotten a lead that way in years.
About half the area covered by the 2 books is outside our WISP coverage, and I
used to get the people all angry why do you advertise in my yellow book if you
don’t have service here? That hasn’t happened in a long time, which is one
indicator for me that nobody uses the YP books anymore. We do get leads from
the free “shopper” paper they throw on driveways (or maybe they mail them, I’m
not sure).

Also, Dex Media annoys me with their billing and renewal practices, so why send
them money if it isn’t working.

The only issue with SSDs is the write endurance, and most of them now have a
certain percentage of spare cells to stave that off for a while. They generally
won't go toes up all at once, but will lose cells, or blocks of cells at some
point. You will get more endurance if you oversize them to minimize cell
re-use. If you think you need 1TB, get 2TB, and it will cut cell re-use by 50%.

Way, way faster.

trying to figure out my best option for cell phone usage.

So far looks like my best option is to get a data only sim and use
whatsapp. That seems to be working fine for my daughter right now.
We are able to communicate with no issues.

When I connect to WiFi, I should be able to use WiFi calling with my
current number to call back to the states if needed. In the past using
WiFi calling, seems that texts will work also.

So, here is the crazy part. If I get a data only SIM, there will be no
voice connection. Almost like my phone being in airplane mode, but with
data enabled. Will the WiFi calling work on the data only plan?
Will it detect I have data, but no voice and fail over to WiFi
calling.

Anybody ever try this?

Re: [AFMUG] International cell phone use

2019-01-24 Thread Joe Novak
Use wifi calling all the time now with Google Fi. Work, home, everywhere.
It roams on and off it pretty damn well too. My experience with Verizon's
implementation left a lot to be desired because they mostly preferred the
cell phone network, even when you obviously didn't have a reliable
connection.

2019-01-24 Thread Ken Hohhof
Somebody mentioned WiFi calling, does that really work OK for you, even
domestically?

I don’t use it, but the only time I hear it mentioned is when a WISP customer
calls complaining about WiFi calling, usually dropped or one-way calls, but
that everything else on their Internet connection is fine. For whatever
reason, they usually seem to have a Sprint phone. My conclusion was that WiFi
calling must not be very reliable, so please stop calling your ISP about it.
It seems like people were using it at their house rather than get a microcell.

Title: Re: [AFMUG] International cell phone use

Bill,

Yeah, that's verizon's pay as you go rate. $10/day adds up quick.  Doing some research, I can get some European data only sim's for about $35 for 30 days with about 8GB of data.  8GB should be good enough for keeping up to date with whatsapp and basic web surfing.
Guess I can check my voicemail and get texts on my main number when I'm near WiFi.  I do have a Boingo account I rarely use.  I think they have an App the will detect and automatically connect to their hotspots. Thinking between that, public WiFi and a data only SIM, I should be reachable most of the time.

Doing the PDFs yes. The Windows 10 thing is too non-specific to say. Chrome
OS has evolved into a VM host kind of environment, and you can do more with
it than most people realize. Overall, it is mainly simpler and less fiddly
than Windows 10, or even a Mac for that matter. It is also faster doing
everything.

Chromebook is just a laptop running Android.
They are cheap, simple, and fastbut if you need something that runs

Re: [AFMUG] New server SSD vs HDD

2019-01-24 Thread Bill Prince
The only issue with SSDs is the write endurance, and most of them now have
a certain percentage of spare cells to stave that off for a while. They
generally won't go toes up all at once, but will lose cells, or blocks of
cells at some point. You will get more endurance if you oversize them to
minimize cell re-use. If you think you need 1TB, get 2TB, and it will cut
cell re-use by 50%.

Way, way faster.

[AFMUG] Is there a term for accessing an IRU in the middle?

2019-01-24 Thread Adam Moffett
I want to request an IRU where we pigtail out of one of their splice
cases somewhere in between the A and Z end.

I want to stick an OADM in the middle to serve just one or two
properties that happen to lie in the middle of the run.  So I'll need
them to cut their two fibers, splice 4 times into a pigtail that goes to
my enclosure.  In my closure I loop those fibers through the East and
West ends of a MUX.

Is there a term I should use for this so I sound like I know what I'm
asking for?

Not unless the alternative is hot-plug SAS drives. I like being able to notice
the red light on a failed drive and just pop in a spare, not sure if there is
an equivalent method with SSDs. Also not sure if you can get the SMART stats

But I have a webserver that is maybe 3-4 years old that was built with SSDs and
have had no problems. I think they were Samsung 850 PRO drives.

Write endurance is still a thing.  Just be sure to compare specs. DWPD
is the simple number to go by.  If they don't publish a DWPD on the spec
sheet that probably means you don't want to know.

Um. Let me think. NO, in fact, unless you need storage, SSDs are the way to

From everything I am reading, it doesn’t differentiate between types of
wireless equipment. Size can’t exceed 3 cu feet for antenna or for 6 cu feet
for multiple antennas. Local government can enforce setbacks and some
aesthetic items, but can’t say no. Seems it include WISPs.

However, that is just the summary information I could find.

I have not read the order, or if I did it has been some time. I know it
essentially preempts local governments and allows cell sites on almost all
power poles or something similar to that. Is it broad enough that WISPS can
use it? Seems like it was.

Re: [AFMUG] FCC small cell order

2019-01-24 Thread Mathew Howard
Anybody got a link to the actual order, or at least a summary? I'd like to
read it...

However, that is just the summary information I could find.

I have not read the order, or if I did it has been some time. I know it
essentially preempts local governments and allows cell sites on almost all
power poles or something similar to that. Is it broad enough that WISPS can
use it? Seems like it was.

I've had some customers hook up the output of

What I've had in the queue is a module set up specifically
for these sensors and which reports percent directly.

We have 4 of them and love them.

Generac 7005 Propane Tank (LP) Fuel
Level Monitor - WiFi enabled https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072KJBLV2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_cqtsCbZ22K84X

The only down side is it has to
connect to a 2.4ghz SSID with no security
enabled.  So we engineered the WiFi AP to only
accept that MAC address and only hand out 1 ip to
that device and then fire walled everything so the
monitor could only talk to their cloud.  Basically
the device has a battery in it and it turns on
once a day for a minute and pushes its data to the
cloud so you can access it on their free AP or
  website.

I've got an off-grid site with three 100
gallon tanks. The propane guy setup the
manifold such that the tanks should drain
sequentially, but I'd like to
monitoring/chart them remotely. Each tank
has a R3D gauge, but not sure what sensor to
plug into them.
