No, it doesn't. I'm not sure if all of it works the same way or not, but
the Cambium stuff has a layer 2 option that creates tunnels through it, but
it's all done over IPv6.

Terragraph is natively all IPv6 and meshes. All v4 traffic through the
Terragraph network is tunneled in some way (probably encapsulated in UDP
packets like VXLAN or something).

Re: [AFMUG] Conflict

2022-02-11 Thread Aeron Wireless
Little back story. My company was Aeron Wireless. I have a GREAT
relationship with the FISP. The FISP had always been my backbone provider.
I've sold my company and came on as an employee to the WISP in question.

I've made it known that I am unhappy about him selling these PTPs. Yes he's
done this before. This was the first one since I've been onboard.

House A and House B are owned by the same people. House B is a rental, I
guess landlord wants to include internet in the rent and not pay any more
for it. To me it doesn't make any difference. One residence, one account.
Two residences, two accounts. Does this change anything for anyone?

Tried that myself, in the end it wasn’t worth a shit. Probably
spent 15 years grooming a local bank. They were more than happy to take our

completely different story.

In the end they were worthless. Ended up going with Live Oak, who

Skip the local guys - they don’t understand anything that isn’t

industry.

Stop wasting your time with the idiots.

Mikrotik 60ghz is by far the simplest to work with. I think all of the
other PtMP offerings, aside from the older Ignitenet stuff, are Terragraph
based (Cambium, Siklu and IgniteNet), which certainly has some advantages,
but it's also a lot more complicated to get running.

We have quite a bit of Mikrotik 60ghz PtMP running, and it mostly works
pretty well. The biggest issue with it is that you're limited to 8 clients
per AP, so it isn't going to scale as well as the newer Terragraph stuff,
but it's super cheap and simple to work with. The best option kind of
depends on what you're going to do with it.

Re: [AFMUG] Federal funding totals

2022-02-11 Thread dmmoffett
It’s variable depending on circumstances.

NY DOT sucks…..I mean they’re very competent they just have a lot of process to
deal with and I don’t like it.

Rural municipal DPW or road departments have been the best for me by far. Some
of them don’t even have a permit process. one town highway guy literally told
me “do what you want, just don’t hit our pipes”.

Bigger cities can sometimes have frustrating rules. Everytime they pave the
street in Binghamton, NY they have a 5 year moratorium on cutting the pavement.
You can dig to respond to an emergency, but you will literally not be able to
install a handhole for 5 years after they pave. Ithaca, NY doesn’t want
anybody to build anything for any reason at all…..or so it seems sometimes.

Counties were usually a simple one page application, but they can vary too.

Worst ever was a wireless install on a pole in NY DOT right of way. The State
of NY has a contract with Crown Castle to manage all wireless infrastructure on
state property so you have all the state requirements PLUS you have to pay
Crown Castle for engineering.

Oh I damn near forgot about the railroad crossings. Getting permission takes
$75,000+ and probably 6 months to a year.

So yeah it *can* be a huge hurdle, but maybe the answer is just don’t build in
places where they make it hard for you.

you know, #1 is always what I figured would be the greatest hurdle. I figured
it was costly and full of constand bureaucratic nonsense. Its what stopped me
over the years from even considering spending much time looking into
underground for my employer to self build or for me to do stuff. Its only been
in this last year I started dealing with it and realizing its not that big of a
deal, especially in podunk illinois. It really depends on how personable you
can be with the commissioners and in small areas without state mother may Is,
its not a bribe if nobody knows where he got whatever it is he likes

How are you getting your permits?

How are you getting a spool of fiber? How are you moving it?

You need bandwidth, how low can you possibly get that per month?

If you're using a trencher, where are you getting the seed to fix the damage?
How are you getting under a driveway?

I'm looking to deploy this for a short-range downtown network from a

I'm not sure what differentiates them.

Re: [AFMUG] sms forwarding

2022-02-11 Thread Cameron Crum
Twilio is a good option if you don't mind paying, although I'm not sure how
it would handle the non-response/escalation requirement. That would have to
be managed by a program somewhere else. You pay for every call, message,
etc and you do need some minor development skills to make it do what you
want. YAs Forrest says, people do build whole call centers out of it, but
that would get complex and pricey. They also have a unified product called
flex that is very feature rich, but also a bit expensive. For less than you
are paying twilio to do all that, you could easily spin up a VM at any
hosting provider with free PBX, add a trunk line, and configure some
scripts to manage the response time/escalation. I also like and use Google
Voice and think it might be able to do 90% of what you need. I have used
both Twilio and use Google Voice as well. I know you don't care much for
the big billing platforms out there, but many have some great communication
features now. For instance, Visp now has a messaging center that works
through SMS, FB, What's App, and is adding more. It can handles incoming
messages from customers and auto reply, open a ticket, chat with sales or
support, etc. The SMS part works through Twilio. I'm sure Sonar and
Powercode, etc will have something similar if they don't already. Lot's of
options, but most require time or money or both.

A bit more detail.

If you need more flexibility than Google voice, Twilio is a provider which
has a whole crap ton of products dealing with telephony.

More importantly for your situation they permit one to build a serverless
application to handle your incoming calls and SMS. So you can say "when
you receive a SMS, forward it onto these 6 cell phones and 4 email
addresses"

The functionality is so complete that people build entire call centers
including hold queues, time on hold estimates, round Robin queues and so
on.

The erector set comment I made refers to the fact that they give you the
tools, and docs and expect you to put them together to do what you want.
In your case, I'd expect twiML being "hosted" in twiML bins might have
enough functionality.
