are chartered boats out of florida an option? 15 pallets at t about 2.5 tons
might be doable on a few charters (a fishing trawler might be able to do it in
one)

not going to be cheap, but I'm guessing at this point non critical
infrastructure shipping isn't going to be cheap

btw, the less than reputable shippers are always accessible and can get anywhere

He has equipment he needs to restore his network, it’s stranded stateside now.
I am working multiple angles to get shipment to the island, not easy right now.
One shipment is 15 pallets weighing in at 5.3 K pounds.

Transport to the island is the issue; see my earlier post about FAA status. If
anyone knows of transport going to the island and has room for this stuff ping
me. The pallets are in CA right now.

Until he gets equipment to the island he can’t really use much help yet. Since
commercial flights have not resumed transportation there is also the issue.

Here is the latest on the FAA situation at San Juan:

FAA said preliminary damage assessments have identified a number of critical
radars and navigational aids were destroyed or disabled during the storm. The
agency is bringing replacement systems to the islands by air and by sea to
restore essential radar, navigation and communication services, and a
long-range radar in Turks and Caicos was made operational Sept. 25.

“Technicians are making their way to a second long-range radar site today
[Sept. 25] at Pico del Este, which is located inside a National Park in Puerto
Rico, on the top of a mountain.,” FAA said. “The last two miles to the site
through the rain forest are impassable, so the technicians are using chain saws
to clear a path for themselves and the replacement equipment.”

FAA is unable to give an estimate for full restoration of service, citing the
extent of the damage and the challenges of the terrain where the equipment is
located.

I am in communication with Gino, he has gear stuck stateside so he and I are
trying to figure out some logistics. It’s a lot of radios!

FYI: moving the IP Address ranges off the BMU to another in the mirror
group makes all the difference in the world. The snmp monitoring croaks out
the NX216 somewhere over 200mb

We are clean pushing up to 300mb across this one tonite after moving a few
hundred ip ranges off.

we are going to bring up another old retired BMU with nothing more than IP
access to the network and move all ip ranges to that as nothing more than
an snmp probe to get us through til the mikrotik implemenetaion is full
production while we review out long term options.

BTW powercode was pretty responsive today and very frank on the underlying
issues and the long term solutions. I was satisfied with what they had to
say because it fully explained what was going on. didn't have a today fix,
but the root cause was acknowleged

Those are called LCAC’s, can carry 60 tons. Retired Navy Chief, love those
things. They could bring them ashore at places like Roosevelt Roads but the
rest of the island logistics as has been mentioned is also the issue. I am sure
the Navy is full on deployed right now to help deal with this. It all takes
time to stage and then transport. Moving tonnage is a massive undertaking which
is why after the gulf wars it was just cheaper to leave so much equipment there
and not bring it back.

2017-09-26 Thread Lewis Bergman
When I was in the USMC we had gigantic air cushion type transports that
could carry two M1 Abrams. I never saw them come up on anything other than
a Sandy Beach so I don't know if they can or not. Also don't know what kind
of beaches PR has. Who knows where they are.

I would think deployment of military on a territory is a lot easier than
stateside legally.

its crazy one article has talked about 4 million meals that shipped and I
don't even recall the water volume. I was trying to put that in
perspective, assuming MREs are probably the most compact meal, just what
that volume is, I couldn't fathom it. I only eat once a day by choice,
maybe twice if I'm drinking, that was considered a substantial delivery,
and that only gives 2 or three meals for the number of people in demand.
I'm not a person whos capable of that emotional feels stuff, but this
situation makes my eyesockets catch fire

are chartered boats out of florida an option? 15 pallets at t about 2.5
tons might be doable on a few charters (a fishing trawler might be able to
do it in one)

not going to be cheap, but I'm guessing at this point non critical
infrastructure shipping isn't going to be cheap

btw, the less than reputable shippers are always accessible and can get
anywhere

FEMA Presser Dates 9/24/17

Federal Response Teams Assisting in Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands
Release date:
September 24, 2017
Release Number:
HQ-17-138

WASHINGTON – In the wake of Hurricane Maria, life, personal safety, and
access to safe shelters for disaster survivors remain a priority of local
responders, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the entire
federal family.

To aid in life sustaining missions, six FEMA Urban Search and Rescue (US)
task forces are deployed to the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and are
working in tandem with numerous federal partners to rescue and render aid
to distressed survivors in the region. Additional FEMA US task forces
are arriving today to expand operations, as areas become accessible. FEMA
US task forces currently conducting operations in Puerto Rico and the
U.S. Virgin Islands include Virginia Task Forces 1 and 2, Florida Task
Forces 1 and 2, and California Task Forces 6 and 7. Components of New York
Task Force 1 and Massachusetts Task Force 1 are on the ground providing
logistics support.

Federal partners assisting with Search and Rescue (SAR) missions include
the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S.
Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and the U.S.
Department of the Interior / National Park Service.

Collectively, these federal agencies have rescued 180 individuals and
searched more than 45 structures in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

[image: five men in uniform stand around the hood of a car and look at a
piece of paper]

*FEMA Urban Search and Rescue task force members meet with local officials
on St. Croix to coordinate search and rescue operations.*

The U.S. Coast Guard is operating nine cutters in the vicinity of Puerto
Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, bringing helicopter SAR support, while teams
from CBP are operating two P-3 maritime patrol aircraft to assist in
communications, a wide-area search, and distress signal monitoring
capabilities. An additional five flight deck-equipped cutters, five patrol
boats, four rotary wing, and one fixed wing aircraft are moving to the
vicinity of U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico to further support search
and rescue efforts.

While US teams continue targeted sweeps of the affected areas, teams from
the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management are providing
security and force protection to rescuers.

Department of Defense support includes helicopter SAR flights, damage
assessment flights, beach assessments, and patient evacuation flights flown
from the amphibious ships USS Kearsarge and USS Oak Hill and Marines
embarked from the 26thMarine Expeditionary Unit.

FEMA US teams are organized under the National Urban Search and Rescue
Response System, which partners federal, state and local partner emergency
response teams to create 28 US task forces. These 28 task forces are
located throughout the continental United States and can be activated to
provide assistance in survivor rescue, damage assessment, and SAR in a
water environment. The task forces deployed consist of multi-faceted, and
cross-trained personnel who service in major functional areas to include:
search, rescue, medical, hazardous materials, logistics, and planning. A
task force also includes technical specialists, such as physicians,
structural engineers, and canine search teams.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the DoD conducted
medical evacuations for more than 100 patients from the islands to the
continental United States.

The National Guard Bureau (NGB) has more than 2,300 Guard members on the
ground in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands taking part in security
and support operations. The Air National Guard is focused on transporting
food, water, and communications capabilities as well as rapidly increasing
airlift into affected areas.

FEMA, working in coordination with federal partners, provided more than
1.5-million meals, 1.1-million liters of water, nearly 300 infant and
toddler kits, and nearly 12,000 emergency roofing kits to the U.S. Virgin
Islands and Puerto Rico for distribution to the public since Hurricane
Maria’s landfall.

Re: [AFMUG] Gino - status update

2017-09-26 Thread Brian Webster
Talking with Gino tonight and he is a bit overwhelmed. He asked if I could help
and field the offers of manpower assistance, so I told him I would gladly help
coordinate for him.

Here is the situation as of this point:

This is crazy, youd think they could bring in some of those military bridging

I don't think people realize you cant land cargo planes on damaged tarmacs. Its
almost worth reaching out to the cartels at this point, they can move high

Re: [AFMUG] Gino

2017-09-26 Thread Steve Jones
I'm getting tired of media reports from some individual talking about how
they haven't had anyone come to offer them help. this is probably the
biggest natural disaster I can recall in my lifetime for the US. we aren't
anywhere near house to house. Even texas, if it we just the state and feds
would still be on S but another set of states had a Cajun navy within
driving distance. nothing in PR is within driving distance.
the mainland had cash reserves and infrastructure staged. what was it like
10k utility trucks staged for florida?

how do you stage on an island that's about to get decimated.

This is going to be a huge learning experience (imagine Hawaii had japan
been more effective) as a nation. there is limited overall industry
footprint for the WISP community, but rethinking is going to be key moving
forward.

I'm very happy to hear that word from Gino is still an ability to give
thought to his network, and not like a lot of individuals there whom at
this point are giving thought to surviving with no resource and no local
governmental infrastructure to reach out to, because it wasn't there before
the disaster.

they should send some tunneling machines, like they use for those massive
underwater roads and subways to build out an infrastructure backbone that's
hardened to disaster.

if they successfully mitigate their debt with the bankruptcy, make good use
of FEMA funds, and get some good representation on this big infrastructure
spend the administration is pushing. PR can walk away from this the
wealthiest non state ever

I just read an article about people being pissed cause they haven't lifted
the act that bans coastal shipping to non us ships. they lifted it for
Harvey and Irma, but not this one. everybody is making a big stink, the
problem is, the ports are damaged, theres limited offload capacity and
ships are queued.
This is crazy, youd think they could bring in some of those military
bridging vehicle to make a bridge out to some barges made into temporary
docks or something.

I don't think people realize you cant land cargo planes on damaged tarmacs.
Its almost worth reaching out to the cartels at this point, they can move
high volumes of cargo into inaccessible areas like nobodys business

Right now there are limited flights in and out of PR, their FAA systems were
down as of last report I received this morning. FedEX, UPS, and USPS are not
operational on the island yet. Flights in and out are VFR only with very big
spacing and slots controlled and issued from Miami. Logistics is a big issue

[AFMUG] cnpilot r190w wireless disconnects

2017-09-26 Thread Steve Jones
I'm testing one of these out at my house to replace the free roouters (air
router) we give our customers

I'm running 4 ESSID to monitor device type usage
all 4 use the same encryption type and are otherwise default wireless

the first essid was for phones in the house, but what we are seeing is
constant connect/disconnect on the devices, like sitting there the
notification pops up like every three seconds

move to essid 2-4 and there is no issue

is this some sort of bug? the wireless doesn't seem to be syslogged (I did
like ubnt logs, they were helpful)

also, is there a way in the router to view realtime usage like the air
router?

Re: [AFMUG] Collection agency

2017-09-26 Thread David Coudron
We have been very happy with Powercode and avoiding it all together. They get
turned off after 5 days if they haven’t paid automatically. The vast majority
take care if it right away. Others might go a day or two, but we never have
to intervene at all. However, we don’t have large business customers, it is
all small business or residential. We have never had anyone that didn’t take
care of it themselves, but if it happened, we would just notify them after 30
days of the service being turned off that we would be out to pick up the
equipment. Everything we have is month to month, so there are never any
contracts that customers owe on.

Hey all,

Just wanted to get in front of this before anyone else does - Sonar has
acquired PowerCode* (https://sonar.software/blog/
2017-09-26/our-acquisition-of-powercode) and we'll be reaching out to all
the existing PowerCode customers today to discuss the transition process.

We're very excited about this new step - Cameron and Georgette of PowerCode
are both joining the Sonar team, and I'm confident they are both going to
do great things. If you're currently using PowerCode, you'll receive a
direct email shortly, and we'll be calling everyone as quickly as we can to
discuss details.

Cameron and Georgette will both be in Vegas with us in the Sonar booth as
well, so please come by and say hi!

Hey all,

Just wanted to get in front of this before anyone else does
- Sonar has acquired PowerCode*
(https://sonar.software/blog/2017-09-26/our-acquisition-of-powercode
)
and we'll be reaching out to all the existing PowerCode
customers today to discuss the transition process.

We're very excited about this new step - Cameron and
Georgette of PowerCode are both joining the Sonar team, and
I'm confident they are both going to do great things. If
you're currently using PowerCode, you'll receive a direct
email shortly, and we'll be calling everyone as quickly as
we can to discuss details.

Cameron and Georgette will both be in Vegas with us in the
Sonar booth as well, so please come by and say hi!

It is possible to build an infrastructure that doesn't rely on anything

Back? No. Never had Mikrotik. In ancient times it was CentOS, then
ImageStream, then their own.

You'll still need a BMU of sorts for SNMP, monitoring, etc but the duties

I'm pleased to announce that we've acquired WispMon, and we're happy
to welcome you to the Sonar

family. Alex from the Sonar team will be reaching out to you shortly
to discuss your transition from WispMon to Sonar, but I want to
assure you that for right now, it is business as usual. The WispMon
staff are still in place to support you - both now, and throughout
the transition, and we'll be working closely with you to ensure your
migration is seamless and worry free.

I'm sure you have tons of questions, and we want to answer them. We
have four webinars scheduled this week that will introduce you to
Sonar, if you're not familiar with it already. We'll also be calling
you directly to introduce ourselves, and start a conversation about
the transition process.

If you'd like to start learning more about Sonar, we have a lot of
resources available. Our Sonar Casts

provide video training on all the different Sonar modules, and
there's a wealth of information available on our website
.
I'm confident you'll be excited about the potential of this move -
from talking to Cameron and the other staff members at WispMon about
the oustanding feature requests they have, I'm positive you'll be
happy with the improved features and functionality available in
Sonar, and that they'll bring a significant improvement to your
daily operations.

We'd love to see you at one of the webinars we have scheduled this
week, where we'll do a high level run through of Sonar, and talk
about some of our advanced modules and features, such as our
scheduling, ticketing, and network monitoring modules. *Please pick
from one of the webinar times below to register*:

  * Thursday 9AM

  * Thursday 2PM

  * Friday 9AM

  * Friday 2PM

We'll be in touch soon, and I'm looking forward to you becoming part
of the Sonar community. We'll be in Vegas at WISPAPALOOZA

in a couple of weeks, along with Cameron and Georgette from WispMon
- I hope to see you there!

2017-09-26 Thread Josh Luthman
I'm with you Eric, I didn't want to deal with Unifi (Windows/mobile/etc)
for programming.

I just went with Cambium cnPilot products. Here in the future I think
we'll do R190 since they're so cheap. Simply using the LAN port with DHCP
disabled and a different IP and it acts like a bridge for the most part.

The biggest thing is I can't restore backups due to licensing issues.
Instead of striping away a license from another radio, because it'll never
work, it fails the entire restore.

Radio wise it seemed good on my test backhaul.

shortly to discuss your transition from WispMon to Sonar, but I want to assure
you that for right now, it is business as usual. The WispMon staff are still in
place to support you - both now, and throughout the transition, and we'll be
working closely with you to ensure your migration is seamless and worry free.

I'm sure you have tons of questions, and we want to answer them. We have four
webinars scheduled this week that will introduce you to Sonar, if you're not
familiar with it already. We'll also be calling you directly to introduce
ourselves, and start a conversation about the transition process.

If you'd like to start learning more about Sonar, we have a lot of resources
available. Our Sonar Casts provide video training on all the different Sonar
modules, and there's a wealth of information available on our website . I'm
confident you'll be excited about the potential of this move - from talking to
Cameron and the other staff members at WispMon about the oustanding feature
requests they have, I'm positive you'll be happy with the improved features and
functionality available in Sonar, and that they'll bring a significant
improvement to your daily operations.

We'd love to see you at one of the webinars we have scheduled this week, where
we'll do a high level run through of Sonar, and talk about some of our advanced
modules and features, such as our scheduling, ticketing, and network monitoring
modules. Please pick from one of the webinar times below to register :

* Thursday 9AM
* Thursday 2PM
* Friday 9AM
* Friday 2PM

We'll be in touch soon, and I'm looking forward to you becoming part of the
Sonar community. We'll be in Vegas at WISPAPALOOZA in a couple of weeks, along
with Cameron and Georgette from WispMon - I hope to see you there!

[AFMUG] Sonar acquires WispMon

2017-09-26 Thread Simon Westlake

Hey all,

Just wanted to get in front of this before anyone else does - Sonar has
acquired WispMon
(https://sonar.software/blog/2017-09-26/our-acquisition-of-wispmon) and
we'll be reaching out to all the existing WispMon customers today to
discuss the transition process.

We're very excited about this new step - Cameron and Georgette of
WispMon are both joining the Sonar team, and I'm confident they are both
going to do great things. If you're currently using WispMon, you'll
receive a direct email shortly, and we'll be calling everyone as quickly
as we can to discuss details.

Cameron and Georgette will both be in Vegas with us in the Sonar booth
as well, so please come by and say hi!

[AFMUG] "high iron content in the soil"

2017-09-26 Thread Steve Jones
We have an area that has had all kinds of weird issues over the years, from
grounding to what appears to be multipath fade.

When dealing with the grounding issues way back in the alvarion
breezeaccess times one of the farmers told me the area has a really high
iron content.

A lot of what I see is what id expect shooting across a long steel building

is it possible high iron content in the farmland would be enough to act in
a similar fashion to a sheet of metal?

I don't know the iron numbers, I may take a sample in for testing, but id
expect enough to make a difference would pretty much be a field of iron ore.

is it possible soil iron content can impact our type of RF 900 3.6 and 5ghz?
