Re: Functional Requirements Template for Remedy

2012-01-17 Thread Jose Huerta
We do not have any special template for Remedy. I think that creating an
special template for Remedy can lead to use a bad practice: Use
technical language on requirements. Requirements must be understood by all
stakeholders. I prefer to use sentences like When pressing this button,
the date will be uptaded, than Create an active link to be fired on
pressing the button that updates the Date field. What I have is an
internal analysis document that specifies the objects to be modified,
created or deleted.

Technicall Challenge in pulling data dynamically

2012-01-17 Thread Manoj Patil
Hello List,

We are having below technical difficulty in one of the requirement.
What we want do is to set a field dynamically. We have two fields on the form
(Form Name and Field Id).

Now we want a workflow/Run Process that would do dynamic set field.Like it
should pick value of the Form Name field (Let’s assume, it would pick formname
as a TEST:MP) as source form andvalue of the Field Id as source field id (The
field idis of the field on form TEST:MP).
In set field action, Form name can be picked by using Sample Data in Set
fieldbut we cannot map field dynamically.
**we have static set field qualification.

I did it using SQL query but the result I get for character field is fine but
if it is date field or selection field, it would set the time is seconds or the
selection value and not the label. So using an sql query it will be difficult
to determine what type of field is being pulled and hence there would be
trouble to convert the value to a readable format.

Let me know if anyone have solution for this.

32bit Vs.64bit JVM performance

2012-01-17 Thread Andrew C Goodall
I'm soliciting feedback regarding experience observed in the field regarding
migrating from 32bit JVM to 64bit processes - is it worth it?

So we'll be upgrading from 7.5 32bit to 7.6.04 64bit (on Windows 2008), our
major objective is to drastically improve client performance.

Due to BMC RD response, BMC PS is recommending we stay with the 32bit JVMs -
what are your thoughts?

I don't mind extra CPU overhead if it means better performance to the client.

From BMC Remedy AR System Server 7.6 Performance Tuning for Business Service
Management page 20:

Many BMC customers are moving toward 64-bit platforms and running the 64-bit
JVM.

Be aware that the 64-bit JVM has performance overhead (see

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/hotspotfaq-138619.html#64bit_performance).

BMC internal performance stress tests demonstrate that the 32-bit JVM
outperforms the

64-bit JVM by at least 45% in terms of CPU utilization. However, if you need
the 64-bit

JVM, consider using hybrid mode and parallel GC as recommended by Oracle, that
is, -

XX:+UseCompressedOops and -XX:+UseParallelGC. The details and

implications of using hybrid mode and parallel GC are beyond the scope of this

document.

Below is BMC RD response to BMC PS:

The deployment architect team response was the following:

on 32-bit JVM, recommendation is to leave GC at default.

For the same exact JVM args (minus GC) when 32-bit JVM versus 64-bit

JVM, 32-bit will outperform the 64-bit JVM by about 15% (Sun's official number).

in our load test, when we run the same exact load with tomcat

hosted by 32 versus 64, 32 has about ½ CPU utilization and 25%

less heap usage.

so, when running 32-bit JVM, leave GC at default (unless a specific

GC model has shown better perf) and very safe to leave the same

exact JVM heap config as 32 bit JVM will use less heap than exact

same when running 64.

same token, when running 64-bit JVM, if not full 64-bit addressing

is needed, run in hybrid mode (-XX:+UseCompressedOops); min

perf overhead (better than the 15% Sun published.)

Manoj,
When faced with the exact same problem (dynamic form AND dynamic field) I was
forced to create a bit of workflow. The first workflow is to look in the
'field' table to determine the 'type' of field I was planning on getting was.
Then use a series of workflow that is specific to that type of field and use
direct sql to set it into the appropriate tmp field type appropriate, then,
once in that field, use standard setfield processes to get it into the field
you actually want it inyou may find the below special run-process usefull

Application-Copy-Field-Value targetFieldID sourceFieldID
Copies a field on the current form to another field on the current form.
Returns one
of the following integers:
?? 1—The assignment failed.
?? 0—The assignment occurred.
To get the return value, use this command in a Set Fields action with $PROCESS$.
This command cannot be used in a Run Process action.

Re: 32bit Vs.64bit JVM performance

2012-01-17 Thread Axton
If you are running out of memory with a 32-bit jvm, you need to move
to a 64-bit jvm. This happens with the midtier when the size of your
concurrent user base exceeds a certain number. Moving to 64-bit will
not help performance in any way by the mere virtue of moving to
64-bit. 64-bit is all about the memory. You can increase performance
by increasing the time between GC cycles, you will pick up some
performance there. There are also JVM parameters that can help with
the performance of 64-bit JVM's.

We are on ITSM 7.6.03 patch001, ARS 7.6.03p002, Windows 2008, Oracle 11g.

We are seeing at random when users click refresh on the overview console or
sometimes immediately after they login and when the overview console is
rendering, users are getting

ERROR (623): Authentication failed error message.

If they wait for some time and try again they could see the tickets in their

I am suspecting may be the plugin crashed or timed out and threw the misleading
authentication error message.

Does any one have experienced this issue?

that is correct, attachments are not part of the workflow that

I'm using ITSM 7.6 p1 and Mid-tier 7.5 p7. Last night I tried to upgrade
tomcat to tomcat 6 (from tomcat 5) in production and had a display issue that
isn't happening in UAT (same versions). In incident the two panels at the top
with the customer information (the one with the name, etc and the second one
with the customer phone and site, etc) are both displaying at the same time.
One is supposed to be hidden-so my folks were seeing overlapping fields. I
cleared the cache (server and client) to no effect. I've seen this before, but
can't remember what the fix was (it was about 9 months ago). Can someone out
there refresh my memory?

If you are running out of memory with a 32-bit jvm, you need to move
to a 64-bit jvm. This happens with the midtier when the size of your
concurrent user base exceeds a certain number. Moving to 64-bit will
not help performance in any way by the mere virtue of moving to
64-bit. 64-bit is all about the memory. You can increase performance
by increasing the time between GC cycles, you will pick up some
performance there. There are also JVM parameters that can help with
the performance of 64-bit JVM's.

migrating from 32bit JVM to 64bit processes - is it worth it?

 So we'll be upgrading from 7.5 32bit to 7.6.04 64bit (on Windows 2008), our
major objective is to drastically improve client performance.

Due to BMC RD response, BMC PS is recommending we stay with the 32bit JVMs
 - what are your thoughts?

I don't mind extra CPU overhead if it means better performance to the
 client.

However, if you need
 the 64-bit

JVM, consider using hybrid mode and parallel GC as recommended by Oracle,
 that is, -

XX:+UseCompressedOops and -XX:+UseParallelGC. The details and

implications of using hybrid mode and parallel GC are beyond the scope of
 this

 document.

Below is BMC RD response to BMC PS:

The deployment architect team response was the following:

on 32-bit JVM, recommendation is to leave GC at default.

For the same exact JVM args (minus GC) when 32-bit JVM versus 64-bit

JVM, 32-bit will outperform the 64-bit JVM by about 15% (Sun's official
 number).

in our load test, when we run the same exact load with tomcat

hosted by 32 versus 64, 32 has about ½ CPU utilization and 25%

 less heap usage.

so, when running 32-bit JVM, leave GC at default (unless a specific

GC model has shown better perf) and very safe to leave the same

exact JVM heap config as 32 bit JVM will use less heap than exact

 same when running 64.

same token, when running 64-bit JVM, if not full 64-bit addressing

is needed, run in hybrid mode (-XX:+UseCompressedOops); min

perf overhead (better than the 15% Sun published.)

Re: Remedy/Oracle person NEEDED at Quantico, VA

2012-01-17 Thread LJ LongWing
Todd,

The problem you are having is that Cleveland isn't necessarily a 'technology
hub' to the best of my knowledge. So..while that rate may work for 'local'
candidates.it WON'T work for ones that must travel there and maintain a
'remote' site (if they own a home, have a family, etc). Being you are
looking for a 'temp' for a year..unless you got yourself a young, unattached
consultant with very junior experience.you won't likely be able to find a
person at that rate.but if you are upgrading from one ITSM to the next, you
want someone with some good experience doing that.I don't think you'll find
that at the rate being offered.

Hello everyone,

I work for an IT consulting firm, and I wanted to get some feedback as to
why one of our clients is having such a hard time filling a Remedy
developer/administrator position. I am running into the rate being too low.
Any suggestions please let me know.

1 year contract, can go corp to corp or w2.

Highest corp to corp would be 80/hr

Location: Cleveland, OH

Below is the environment:

AR=7.5 patch 4 in Production, patch 7 in DEV and Q/A
ITSM = 7.6 for Incident, Change, Problem
Asset = 7.1

We have approval to move to 7.6.04 in the new year.

Re: overview console random authentication errors

2012-01-17 Thread patchsk
Yes we are on a server group with two ars servers and two midtiers. Both
ars and midtiers are load balanced.
I do not think it is related to connectivity because the users already are
logged in at that time.
They could access other consoles with out any issues when they get
authentication error with over view console.
Sometime it happens just after they login into remedy, sometimes it happens
when they click refresh on the overview console.
If they wait for a min or two and try again it would work fine.
It just happens to random users at random times.

DataImport.bat file

2012-01-17 Thread Kemes, Lisa
We are moving from a 7.1p7 server to a 7.6.04 Server (Windows 2008) and used to
use the arimportcmd.exe file to import data from our server.

I'm reading up on the 7.6.04 Integration Guide and it says to use the
DataImport.bat file.

Do I actually have to install the Data Import tool on my Application Server or
can I just copy and paste this file from my PC (which I did install the Data
Import Tool) to our App Server?

Re: DataImport.bat file

2012-01-17 Thread Kemes, Lisa
I think I answered my own question. Just took a look at the file and it says:

This file assumes that it is being launched from the main Developer Studio
directory Or dataimporttool directory as well and will fail if launched from
somewhere else.

So, I'll install the Data Import Tool on our App Server.

Thanks!

Run process to open FORM on second server

2012-01-17 Thread remedy arlist
Hi ARSlist users,

*BackGround*: Have a Prod app and Rpt server. SQL level replication is
enabled to replicate data b/w the 2 in real time. ARADMIN access is
disabled on RPT to avoid users updating records.

*Issue:* Users are performing free text searches on Notes field, Resolution
and summary field of Incident Form leading to timeout errors.

*Proposed solution:* Plan is to provide a button on Prod Incident form. By
pressing this button, Active Link will fire and open incident FORM on
Reporting, where users can perform adv searches. This will work only if
user have same access in both Prod and RPT.

*Road Block*: Since data is getting replcated from Prod to Rpt, so users
permissions also get replicated from Prod to RPT. Now each access is
connected to server license so the permission replicated to Reporting is
connected to Prod server and reporting server license. As a result even
though user have admin access in Prod, it will work as Read only account on
Reporting. (ARADMIN is locked on RPT and needs a CRQ to remove this lock
for even account that needs to be udpated on Rpt). If there is a RUN
Process command that can be used in AL so we can pass a authentication,
then i can hard code a generic account (which has all needed ITSM access)
and that should do the trick.

Any help is appreciated. Alternate solutions are also welcome.

Regards,
Kumar

Re: Run process to open FORM on second server

2012-01-17 Thread LJ LongWing
Kumar,

Being you are using ITSM via Mid-Tier (right?).you could use a static URL to
the Reporting server that provides a hard coded user/password. This user
would need a read restricted license to be able to do this.but it should
work.

Why in the world did BMC limit the Notes field in WorkInfo records to 255

 Hello List,

We are having below technical difficulty in one of the requirement.
What we want do is to set a field dynamically. We have two fields on the
form (Form Name and Field Id).

Now we want a workflow/Run Process that would do dynamic set field.Like it
should pick value of the Form Name field (Let’s assume, it would pick
formname as a TEST:MP) as source form andvalue of the Field Id as source
field id (The field idis of the field on form TEST:MP).
In set field action, Form name can be picked by using Sample Data in Set
fieldbut we cannot map field dynamically.
**we have static set field qualification.

I did it using SQL query but the result I get for character field is fine
but if it is date field or selection field, it would set the time is
seconds or the selection value and not the label. So using an sql query it
will be difficult to determine what type of field is being pulled and hence
there would be trouble to convert the value to a readable format.

Let me know if anyone have solution for this.

 Environment details:-
 · AR Server 7.5 patch 3
 · Sun Solaris 9
 · Oracle 10g

 Thanks in advance.

 Regards,
 Manoj.
