Re: Strange License issue in 7.6.4

Hi,

One user that simultaneously connects to multiple servers in a group
should not consume multiple licenses. If that is the case, it is a bug in
the AR Servers. It should not have anything to do with the load balancer.

The new recommendation in 7.6.04 is actually to NOT have the sticky bit
set between Mid-Tier and AR Server.

You say it works fine in 7.6.1, but there is no such version. Which
version are you on? I presume that by 7.6.04 r3 you mean 7.6.04 SP3?

 Howard,
I've seen this with 7604 with load balancing. Basically, the LB
doesn't care about the users. It simply looks at tcp port traffic from
the mid tier to the AR. There is not a 1 to 1 correlation between user
actions on mid tier and connections to AR. So if a user action spawns
4 TCP connections, each one will be distributed by the load balancer
equally depending on how you set it, round robin or least connection
etc.. That's probably why you see 1 user on both boxes. That's how I
understand it. Hope that helps. I'd like to hear the resolution that
BMC comes to as this directly effects pricing for the customer.

might be the cause is the load balancer, but no one is sure why a user

Re: Strange License issue in 7.6.4

2012-08-09 Thread Carl Wilson
Hi,
this is actually how the new 7.6.04 version makes use of not having to use
the sticky bit in the load balancer.
What I have found actually happens is that a user is logged into a primary
server and a license record created (master), then they also logged into the
remaining servers with secondary license records (child) for each server.
You can see this occurring in the BMC license usage stats (when enabled).
As a result, you can therefore seamlessly switch between servers and
plug-ins over the user session (as the user appears to be logged into all
servers) without the need to have cache persistency.

The user should not physically take another license, but it will appear as
if they are licensed across all the servers individually to allow the
seamless switch over if a server/process fails. The Mid Tier can also
impersonate this user when making calls, which is why there are now so many
types of these calls seen in the logs.

I had to take this into account when building my license usage program as
the user is soft logged into all servers, although they do actually have a
primary record to the one they connected to first.

Cheers
Carl

Re: Malloc Failed On server in User Tool

2012-08-09 Thread Longwing, LJ CTR MDA/IC
Suresh,
Malloc errors are 'Memory Allocation' errors, which means that some piece of
the system is asking the OS for memory, and is getting an OS level response
that the memory is not available. In this case it is likely that they are
running on 32 Bit OS's and in this case it is either the user tool, or the
server 'arserver.exe/arserverd' that is running out of memory, a quick task
manager/top will show you which one. The 'fix' isn't so easy...usually it's as
simple as close the affected application (client/server) and restart it to
correct the problem short term, but why the process reached this 2GB limit is
the main concern and would take effort from BMC to determine if there is some
sort of leak that needs to be corrected.

So it was what I suspected. That even though the server looks like it's an

Re: Strange License issue in 7.6.4

2012-08-09 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
What it sounds like is happening is that a user is being routed back thru the
load balancer from the ARServer and getting directed to the other server

Can you try setting the hosts file so once you are on a server you stay on the
server?

Here is what I mean:
Say the LoadBalancer is 192.168.1.1, ARServer1 is 192.168.1.11, and
ARServer2 is 192.168.1.12
Your server group is called REMEDY, ARS server 1 is REMEDY1, and ARS server
2 is REMEDY2

What is happening is a user connects to REMEDY (Which is a DNS alias for the
LoadBalancer) and is redirected to REMEDY1. When REMEDY1 needs to open or
access some data for a user it tries to connect to REMEDY (since that is the
server name the user is working with) and the LoadBalancer redirects that
connection to REMEDY2. Your user is now connected to 2 ARS servers using 2
licenses.

By changing the hosts file on REMEDY1 we can stop that looping back thru the
LoadBalancer
  REMEDY1 hosts file before change
 127.0.0.1localhost
 192.168.1.11 REMEDY1 REMEDY1.MYDOMAIN.COM

  REMEDY1 hosts file after change
 127.0.0.1localhost
 192.168.1.11 REMEDY1 REMEDY1.MYDOMAIN.COM REMEDY REMEDY.MYDOMAIN.COM

The user should show up on both servers if you don't use sticky, but this
should definitely not require two floating licenses. One user should only
use one floating license token regardless.

 Good morning Misi,

 How is the new baby?

We were on 7.5 p6 Arserver with ITSM 7.6.1 and went to 7.6.4 r3 of
ARserver with ITSM 7.6.4 r2. We tried the new mid-tier settings, and had a
few issues. Per BMC we went back to the old school sticky bit, so we could
stay up and maybe fix this issue.

I am starting to agree and I think that BMC is as well, that a anon admin
user should not be showing up on both servers and therefor taking up two
 floating licenses.

I am just looking for anyone that has seen any strangeness with licensing
(like this or something else) in 7.6.4 ARS.

 Take care and be well,

 Howard

Re: Recommended size for FTS index collection directory

2012-08-09 Thread Goodall, Andrew C
Not an FTS fan at this point. I have a huge knot in my head from FTS troubles -
but that is a story for another day.

In a server group only one server needs access to the collection folder the
others point to a searcher plugin on the primary fts server that reads the
collection.

We have 43GB FTS collection.

INC = 1.3million
PBI = 5600
CHG = 13500
WOI = 9600
REQ = 82400
KA = 15500

The size just doesn't depend on the number of records though - it also depends
on the number of fields you have added for FTS / MFS indexing and how you have
config'd the Title, Environment, Keywords (in form properties).

Also note the larger the collection size the larger the memory max (Xmx) for
your jvm fts searcher process needs to be - support had use set ours to 6GB
because it kept crashing at 3Gb on incident matching. After setting it to 6Gb
incident matching stopped crashing, I observed that it would regularly consume
4.5gb.

See KA (KA363429 - unpublished) attached on set up of FTS in a server group -
we use the Alternative configuration

Re: ITSM 7.6.04 Join form Query

2012-08-09 Thread Jose Huerta
Hi,

There are several ways to achieve this. Some of them at Remedy native but
complicated, and others are a bit outside ARS.

For instance: inside Remedy:
Create a new option field with one possible value that means last. Create a
filter at workout on submit with two actions: a Push that sets the created flag
to null for all work logs of the same incident having it to last. The second
action is a set flag to last.
With this workflow you ensure that only the last. Omen has this flag activated.
The you can add the condition flag=last to the join condition.

A bit outside Remedy:
Create an SQL view that only show the last value. This can be met with
subqueries. Then you can create a view form that maps this SQL view.

Hi,

There are several ways to achieve this. Some of them at Remedy native but
complicated, and others are a bit outside ARS.

For instance: inside Remedy:
Create a new option field with one possible value that means last. Create a
filter at workout on submit with two actions: a Push that sets the created
flag to null for all work logs of the same incident having it to last. The
second action is a set flag to last.
With this workflow you ensure that only the last. Omen has this flag
activated. The you can add the condition flag=last to the join condition.

A bit outside Remedy:
Create an SQL view that only show the last value. This can be met with
subqueries. Then you can create a view form that maps this SQL view.

Re: Server Group Patch Upgrade

2012-08-09 Thread patchsk
The basic idea is you do not want single database shared with different ars
versions.
The safe way is to actually stop non admin servers, upgrade the admin
server and then upgrade other servers before starting them.

Here is the relevant text from Install guide.

Upgrading servers already in a server group

To upgrade servers that are a part of a server group, follow these
guidelines:
„ Stop all BMC Remedy AR System servers except the server that owns the
administrative operation.
To check this, open the Configuration tab on the AR System Administration:
Server Information form. For the administrative server, the Disable Admin
Operations check box is not selected.
„ Upgrade the server that owns the administrative operation first.
„ Select the Upgrade option during the upgrade.
„ Upgrade the other servers in the group next. Select the Server Group (BMC
Remedy AR System database) option.
„ Do not start the non-administrative servers before performing the upgrade
installation on them.

When upgrading components such as the Approval Server and the Email Engine,
remove the associated server from the server group while performing the
upgrade.
To do this, clear the Server Group Member check box on the Server
Information
form or modify the Server-Group-Member option in the ar.cfg [ar.conf] file

ARSystem 7.6.4 Patch 2

Here is the issue

We have the system configured so that anyone can request On behalf of
using the SRM tool for anyone else. In our 7.5 environment we never had any
issues. It works like this

Joe submits a ticket on behalf of Karen no problem

Kevin submits a new ticket on behalf of Karen we receive the error

Joe submits a second ticket for Karen no problem

The issue appears to be with the ENT:Enttitlement Generate QUAL/CACHE form,
the first person creating on behalf of creates a new entry so there is no
problem, the second; however, receives the error when OTB workflow attempts
to update this record.

The workflow was identical in 7.5 and it updated the record in the form
without any problems. According to BMC 7.6.4 documentation, An individual

still work with SRM even though users without write licenses can not

Re: WWRUG/ARSlist Awards 2012: Nominations for MVP etc. and New Categories now open

2012-08-09 Thread Doug Blair
ARSlist readers,

DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL WITH A NOMINATION, but do keep reading!

I was just filtering through a few thousand emails at lunch today and the two
sent by Dan Bloom and LJ Longwing struck a chord.

We read this mailing list every day, and (probably) search the archives every
so often, looking for that elusive bit of knowledge, configuration, programming
technique or someone else's experience with an extremely complicated subject.
There is too much to know and not enough brain space for any single person to
know all of it. We must share what we have learned just to get through the day.
The things I have learned on the list have saved me MONTHS of effort!

There is a dedicated group of generous people who over the past year (and past
couple of decades) have freely shared what they know so that we can do our jobs
better. Participation is time consuming, frustrating, detailed and usually
thankless.

Usually thankless, but not now.

Would you take a few minutes to think about the number of times you have
learned something from the ARSLIST in the past year?

How-to-do-it?
Yes, that's a bug.
No, we fixed it this way.
Here's another approach.
We have a similar symptom, but a different cause.
They misspelled the doxumentation.
We tested this product and it's great.
We tested this product and it sucks!
Of course, there's another way to do it!
You can remember the 60's? Then you weren't really there, were you?

If any of these happened to you (except for that last one) because of something
you read on the ARSLIST, now's the time to say Thanks!, by nominating the
person for the Most Valuable Contributor to the ARSLIST.

There's also an award for the BMC Software Employee who has gone Beyond the
Call Of Duty.

DO NOT reply to this email with a nomination. Read Dan Bloom's August 3rd post
earlier in this thread for complete details, or just send a private email to
d...@wwrug.com.

Hello List,

Hoping someone can assist.

With further investigation, I have found that filters are not being executed
with 7.5 Runmacro executes. The errors are not being written to arfork.log.

With Runmacro 6.3,

Arfilter.log logs this entry, which is reflected in the stdout error for

I agree that the new field and filter is the simplest method. It is the
option that I'm proposing to the customer.

Simpler than adding one field and one filter?

It's customizing I know, but I would like that all my customizations would

I don't think that there exists a simpler option to do it without going out

 Ray,
Instead of doing a join on the work log, make the column for the work log
entry a separate query in the select portion, and to a select 'top 1' on the
sub-query, with the proper order statements. This will give you a single
work order entry in your column list, null if there aren't any at all.

double quotes

NOT ('Project Status' = Completed OR 'Project Status' = Cancelled OR

Sorry for the typo. I meant two double quotes(not four single quotes).

Your method is also valid and is used when you are trying to build the string
using dynamic data

i.e.:
NOT ('Project Status' = + + $MyField1$ + + OR 'Project Status' =
 + + $MyField2$ + + )
Or
NOT ('Project Status' = + $MyField1$ + OR 'Project Status' = +
$MyField2$ + )

Well...quite simply unidentified client means that the client isn't registering
itself with a client id when it connects to the server. Why/if that would be
preventing the server from returning errors is really not my expertise..I also
notice that it's using a different protocol #.

If you aren't experiencing 'issues' with your datameaning when you try to
do this with datasets that aren't returning error...does it actually work for
you, or is it completely non-functional?

Don't make me talk about wishes regarding Join forms... :)

There are a lot of times where the only solution to fulfill the customer
requirements is to use an SQL view. For instance, a join form between users
and allowed templates. If you join them directly you get duplicates!

Customizing the ITSM notifications

2012-08-09 Thread Jose Manuel Huerta Guillén
Hi listers,

I'm starting to customize the notifications that come OOTB with ITSM. I'm
completelly new to the Notification Engine, Mail Engine and so on.

The customer requirement is to made the notifications a bit more graphic,
with the company logo and corporative colors.

My questions are: Anything to take care about? Where to start? Use
Templates?

Just a few words about it.

Thanks!

All your outgoing templates are and should be in sys:notifications form.
Customizing them in HTML sometimes Get a bit tricky but there's a guide on mail
engine and how to customize that explains the basic fairly well.

Exactly, using a data that should not return an error and execute to create a
incident ticket, this works fine for both versions 6.3/7.5.

BMC is request recreating the macro in 7.5. vs the current which was created in
probably 6.3 version at max. However, since this is a flatfile , i'm waiting on
there response to why!

What is the protocol# relevance?

(protocol 11) - 6.3 version
(protocol 14) - 7.5 version

This seems to be consistent.

And How add images?

I think that I must create a template, with the attached images. Then use
img src=cid:... inside the text.

Is it a good approach?

Re: Customizing the ITSM notifications

2012-08-09 Thread Goodall, Andrew C
The simplest thing to do is just add a standard default header and footer to
the mailbox config.

To do that you go to AR System Email Templates - add an HTML attached
template, then update your AR System Email Mailbox configuration default
outgoing with the new template names for the Header and Footer.

Warning: watch out when using embedded images - in the past the addition of
images in headers / footers eventually started causing the email engine (7.5)
to hang as a result it flooding AR System Email Attachments for some odd
reason.

I'm not an expert in ITSM notification customization but we have added our own
hyperlinks to message body text etc.. from Sys:Notification Messages

It would be a headache if you tried to modify the Sys:Notification Messages
to add custom formatting / info to all the message bodies on these. So I would
stay away from that if you can help it.

Re: Customizing the ITSM notifications

2012-08-09 Thread Nathan Aker
As Andrew describe, the header/footer in the mailbox config is the most direct.
If you want to leverage an HTML template in the body like we did, you'll need
to follow the steps Andrew outlined for creating the template, then apply the
template to the 3 out of box filters used to generate the notification that
I've listed below. The notification subsystem in ITSM doesn't inherently
utilize HTML templates. You have to update these filters to do so. Hope
this helps. Nate.

Also, the email engine only looks at the email templates every 30 minutes.
So, if you make a change, either wait 30 minutes or restart the email
engine. I think they say that in the manual, but it's an easy thing to
overlook, and can be frustrating to deal with when you are just learning
about templates.

Need to add menus to some fields on AST forms

2012-08-09 Thread Julie Sellers
Hi Folks...could use your help!
I need a Char field w/menu attached by workflow on AST:ComputerSystem. (well
actually 4 fields)
The customer is upgrading from v71 to v7604 sp2.
In v71, they just added menus to existing fields like'Environment Specification'
I wanted to attach the menus with Change Field actions in an Active Link;
however,
theyare not working.(I presume this is because no menu is attached already.)
So...

Is there any way to avoid modifying the attribute in Class Manager to do this?
If not,I'll just create new attributes; however,we are having a *DEVIL* of a
time
with SyncUI not working. Have had an open tkt on this w/BMC for the last
several weeks! :(
Suggestions? Thx, js
