Re: Blue (new) license agreement issues...
Hi, The customer got this in writing, I think. Their sales rep says the can not use a Service Desk license to run Custom apps. They need to purchase an extra Service Management Specialist Fixed/Floating to allow users to run their home grown applications. My understanding of licenses and the license agreement, if we skip the discussion about Write/Read licenses etc, are: A. Fixed licenses can be shared across servers for the same user B. Floating licenses can be moved around to different servers, for example if you own 100 licenses you can put 70 on one server and 30 on another. The same apply to Fixed licenses if you have a different set of users that will make use of them. C. A Suite License gives you permission to run all applications plus the basic AR User license needed at the bottom D. A Service Desk license gives you permission to run Incident, Problem and the also the underlying AR User license E. If you want to move 30 of your AR User Floating licenses to another server with a home grown application, you have to choose which license-pack you move. You can choose either Service Desk Float, Suite Float or maybe Asset Float. If we choose Service Desk Float this means: ITSM server: -30 AR User Float ITSM server: -30 Incident Float ITSM server: -30 Problem Float Home-grown server: +30 AR User Float Any other comments? Hi, That would mean EXTERNAL within EXTERNAL, and I do not think that is allowed. Also, you seem to have a problem with it, as there is no left hand parenthesis after the EXTERNAL keyword, and the -characters does not have the right count. Adding removed columns to a table
Hi guys, one of our support teams has requested that 3 additional columns should be added to the main table on the IM Console. These columns will only be used by the requesting team, so I don't want anyone to see them after I add them to the table. I'm looking for a way to add these columns in a removed state, by which I mean the state that a column is in after a user removes it via the table preferences. Re: External() operator
Hi Misi, The string that I posted was in the table qualification now I have added the last statement ('Status_Reason' != 12000) and created an AL that will switched between the first qualification and the second one that includes the statement I have added. Re: Adding removed columns to a table
The settings that control whether a field is present in a table are stored in ar.ini file for the User Tool. For midtier users they will have to be using a preference server to set/save those options. It's not going to be easy to manage this directly so how about setting the column to HIDDEN in the field properties of the form and then using an active link, running for members of the group you're interested in on form open, to change the visibility of the field to VISIBLE? Re: Blue (new) license agreement issues...
Sounds to me like there may be information missing on both sides, but here's the raw information. Under Suite (blue) licensing, license entitlement is sold in bundles. So for the Service Desk User bundle, you get the following entitlements: AR User Fixed Incident Mgmt Fixed Problem Mgmt Fixed Or AR User Floating Incident Mgmt Floating Problem Mgmt Floating The AR User portion of the bundle _can_ be used for custom/bespoke applications or extensions. However, obviously the Incident/Problem licenses require that the AR User license be present on the same AR System server to operate - i.e. you can't install the AR User on one system and the Incident/Problem on another and expect to use Incident/Problem on the second system. Fixed licenses are site licenses - they are associated with a named user. Thus the same human being is entitled to use the purchased fixed entitlement on multiple instance, but _only_ if the login name is exactly the same on every instance. Floating licenses are linked to an instance, but can be shared by multiple human beings. The number of people that can concurrently be logged in equals the number of installed floating user licenses. Even if the same human being goes to a second instance, they will need to access a second purchased floating license. So two possibilities: 1. If Fixed was purchased, the fixed licenses could be activated on a second instance as long as they are assigned to the same named user with the same login name. The AR System User license could be used to power a custom/bespoke application. 2. If floating, the licenses would all have to be deactivated on the first instance and then enabled on the second instance. The floating AR System User license could be used then to power either Incident/Problem or a custom/bespoke application. So one outstanding question is - which bundle did they buy? Thanks, David J. Re: Blue (new) license agreement issues...
Hi, Thank you very much David! The license type I have proposed to move to the bespoke server is Service Desk User Fixed/Floating. I wanted to remove the Incident/Problem/AR licenses from the ITSM-server, and add the AR licenses to the bespoke server. We were told that this was not allowed. What we also wanted to do, which I have not brought up here yet, is to also use 196 the Service Desk User Fixed licenses on both servers, as these have a set of named users that use both ITSM and the Bespoke aplication. The information we got was that we could not use the Service Desk User Fixed/Floating on the Bespoke server, and that the customer needed to buy Service Desk Specialist User Fixed/Floating licenses for the Bespoke server, and that the Service Desk User Fixed/Floating could not be used on the Bespoke server at all. But as I read your answer, it seems that I understood the situation correct from the start, and that the misunderstanding has happened at some other step in the contact chain. I have only spoken VIA the client to the sales rep... Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://rrr.se Sounds to me like there may be information missing on both sides, but here's the raw information. You could limit the permissions of the 3 columns to a group that only that 1 support group is a member of. If you want to use the support group, you'll need to find it in the Group form and change the type to Change, then it'll be available in Dev Studio. Re: Adding removed columns to a table
Michael, From your description, you have a permission issue not a personal removal issue. You state that only that one support team would ever use the fields so there is no reason for any other support team to see those fields. Whatever solution you choose should focus on having column fields that just that team can access in a controlled way. If you try and update people's table preference, what happens when a new person arrives? What happens if one of the people who are not supposed to see this column resets their preference and the three fields suddenly appear. It may not be an issue, or it may be. That is up for you to decide. If you want things controlled on an INDIVIDUAL level and there is no security, the best strategy is to add the fields and then let individuals remove them if they don't want to see them. If you are indeed controlling on the support team level, is there a group that all members of this support team are members of? If so, terrific. If not, you can create a computed group that includes this team list (so you don't have to update each person's group list individually and so you can manage group membership at the definition of the computed group level. Then, you can either add the fields and just give permission to the computed group (or the group they are all already a member of if there was one just for them already) OR you create an active link that makes the fields visible that has permission to only this computed group (of the existing group). NOTE: You always want to have fields Hidden and make them visible by workflow rather than visible and make them hidden by workflow. This is more efficient and it avoids any possibility of fields showing and then disappearing on the screen (and causing screen flicker). This is a general best practice for any fields that are not always visible – start hidden and make them visible vs. start visible and make them hidden. Of course, any changes to definitions would be made in the overlay layer so that they are retained across upgrades without issue. I hope this helps, Doug Mueller From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Jason Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 9:44 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Adding removed columns to a table ** You could limit the permissions of the 3 columns to a group that only that 1 support group is a member of. Re: Vendor TIcket Number
Mark, I have been in contact with the ITSM development team. The fields you are looking for are indeed absent from the ChangeInterface_Create form. Everyone agrees that this is a miss and needs to be corrected. This Interface form should be the main interaction between an external system loading things into the BMC environment. Of course, the IDs of the entry in the external system are important pieces of data to retain so the fields should be on the interface form. In fact, there has been a bug created against the system to correct this issue AND to review all the apps and their interface forms to make sure that all appropriate fields are exposed in the Interface form. This bug is targeted to be worked for the next patch levels of the 7.6.04 and 8.x products. In the interim, you can add these fields to the Interface form yourself to allow things to work today. Use the same field definition (same name, ID, and other characteristics) for each of the fields and put it on the Interface form. You may be able to go to the main form, copy the field definition and paste on the Interface form (that was supposed to be a feature of Dev Studio). Thank you for calling out the missing fields so that the applications can be updated to include the missing capability. The model of licensing A user is assigned the potential for a particular type of license - Read, Restricted Read, Floating Write or Fixed Write. Each of these types of licenses have specific capabilities and restrictions. When a user accesses the system WITHOUT accessing data, they will get a Read license assigned to them and their potential license is still potential because they have done nothing on the system yet. When a user performs any data access within the scope of their license (any form for AR System licenses and forms licensed for the application for Application licenses), their potential license is obtained for this session. Now, if their potential license is a Read, Restricted Read, or Fixed license, this is not really an event because those types of licenses are ALWAYS available. If their potential license is a Floating Write license, this act of obtaining is significant because a token from a limited pool is obtained. Yes, the license is obtained at ANY data access. That is because you have started work and you are licensed for that type of license so one is obtained for you so that you have no restrictions working within that type of license (otherwise you could for example fill out a bunch of data to modify something and then be refused at the save point because you could not obtain a token). The concept of no license needed for read is actually a rather unusual one. Most products require that a user have a license to be able to enter the application at all. For the AR System and BMC applications, you do not need a license to read or submit if that is all you are going to do. Only if you are going to open and change and save something created by someone else do you need a write license. But, if you have a write license of some form, you will obtain that write license whenever you do any data access - including read - within the system. Overview console I tried to be very clear in my previous message. It describes how obtaining a license works within the system and it details the specifics about what is happening. It describes the issue with the Overview console and why a license is obtained. This is true up through and including the current shipping product (8.0 as of this note). Now, I did call out that BMC has recognized that the fact that a broad group of application licenses are obtained on accessing the Overview console is not really what the broader intention and an overall best practice should be. So, this is acknowledgement that BMC understands the issue that is being mentioned and that there is attention being paid about

Re: When is a Floating Application License Consumed
Hi, I see. I recall an earlier situation where people removed the Fixed licenses and assigned them to users as they logged in to the system. In that case I agree fully that this circumvented the idea with the Fixed/Named licenses. Maybe BMC could try to find a fix for the Overview console problem as a hot-fix? I am afraid to recommend upgrades for some companies because they may run out of licenses very fast, at least if they use anything in addition to Incident/Problem... What about doing the Overview console the old way, and have filters populate what would in effect be a union of all the forms involved, and then direct the Overview-table against that data instead? Would that be a breach? The users would in effect indirectly view data from the various applications, but they would never modify it. Re: ARerror.log file size control
On Solaris we just let the log grow to its set size, once filled the log scrolls off old records from the top. As there are 10x1000's of rows in the log its never been a problem with us loosing relevant information. The Log options provided by BMC allow this to happen automatically and we not needed to resort to log rotation. However, if needed, its pretty straightforward to set up and use logrotate as mentioned by Ron or even writing your own for those skilled in BASH or C shell command scripts. Problem comparing date/time field to $DATE$ in a filter
Hello all- I have got a real brain burner on my hands with a filter in a custom application that we are hosting. This filter has as part of its qualification the following clause: ('TR.DateField' != $DATE$) where DateField is a date/time field set to display date-only. This filter had been working fine for a long time when the Remedy server and all users were in the EST time zone. If the qualification passed it threw an error at the user advising that they needed to enter the current date into the DateField field. However once the application was hosted on our server in the PST time zone (three hours behind EST) suddenly the users were getting the error message when they shouldn't. The value in DateField is actually set via an Active Link (named SetFields) which pushes $TIMESTAMP$ and I validated via active link logging in my browser that it's setting only the date (no time) as follows where field 536870925 is the DateTime field in question and 536871091 is a different date/time field that is set to display both date and time: ActiveLink: SetFields - Tue Nov 27 2012 3:12:27 PM True actions: True action: {time}:F(536870925).S({time}expr:({char}keyword:$TIMESTAMP$)){time}:F(536871 091).S({time}expr:({char}keyword:$TIMESTAMP$)){time}:F(536871200).S({time}ex pr:({char}keyword:$TIMESTAMP$)){long}:F(536871219).S({long}expr:({long}goatt ype:EnumType 6 5 5)); action 0 Set-fields 536870925 = 11/27/2012 Set-fields 536871091 = 11/27/2012 6:12:27 PM Here's the rub: if I change the affected users to have PST as the Time Zone in their User Preference record they do not get the error, however if the time zone is null or EST they do get the error. I tried changing the qualification to use the value of DateField instead of the transaction value but that made no difference. I used all of the logs (including API and SQL) and nowhere does it show me how it is evaluating that qualification clause, it just shows pass or fail. If anyone has any ideas on how to make this work proprerly (besides setting the East coast users to PST in their preferences which is just a stopgap) I would be grateful. I know that $DATE$ is evaluated on the server since it's in a filter but it shouldn't matter which time zone a user is in because the date part of that field should be the same (except possibly between midnight and 3am EST if the filter is using the client value). Re: Web Service Error
Hi Mark, We saw the same error when we first implemented 7.6.04. It was later found out that this was due to a bug in the developer studio that was used to create/edit the web service. We always got the error when we consumed the Web service using a .Net client. The solution was to use a later version of Developer Studio (=7.6.04) and save the web service with that version, which solved our problem. Re: Problem comparing date/time field to $DATE$ in a filter
Hi Rick, All date times whether or not they are set to display as a date only or not are stored and evaluated as the number of seconds since midnight 1/1/1970 UTC. Active links use the datetime of the client when evaluating the $DATE$ keyword and set it to midnight local time of the current day. (In your case this could be say 9pm the previous day for the server's time). Filters run on the server and use midnight on the server's date. Hence in your case moving the server's timezone away form the client's has caused your comparison to fail. So what may be happening in your case is that the user has entered midnight. In the servers time this is the previous day to the client's time so the compare fails. For the comparison maybe what you could do is to always add a number of hours to the date entered by the user after entry but before the comparison. This way they should both be in the same date. There is a $SERVERTIMESTAMP$ keyword you could use to figure out the optimal amount to add to get the time to be midnight server time. Hope this makes sense. Timezones can be a bit tricky. Here in Perth, Western Australia we have a bit of experience dealing with servers that are 2 or 3 hours ahead of us. In fact in many versions of Remedy the supplied timezone for us is incorrect by an hour and we need to use Singapore time. Does $VUI$ work in 7.6.04?
This keyword doesn't seem to work in 7.6.04 SP3. I added it to a character field and nothing was returned. Any ideas? Thanks, Keith ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org attend wwrug12 www.wwrug12.com ARSList: Where the Answers Are
