Absolutely, they will. I know. It's called solidarity. Thought my country was not all that stellar in many ways, but perhaps there is at least one way in which it is.If you thought of putting up a campaign just because "I'd love to get a high end PC with a Nvidia RTX, but don't have the money for it", why couldn't you? Someone might donate even to that.By the way, just a couple recent occurrences:I have donated more than the raised amount to other campaigns over the last two or three years, so my conscience is clear as day.I've just been asked to speak in a popular local podcast about videogame accessibility and gaming blind, so there you go.I've been asked by an employee of a big company's fundraising department if I had any previous education or experience in the field.Several other victims of the same scammer contacted me and we're now looking into other legal possibilities of getting him arrested together. The first and only hate I've received so far came from here.4 of my personal friends who are also blind donated to this, and neither of them found it wrong in any way.But I guess I can't be surprised that people from countries where it's the first action step to sue a company for daring to put up an innaccessible site or service rather than first trying to persuade them through advocacy, open discussion and other hyperfuturistic achievements of modern civilization might find this unacceptable or offending.Lukas

Re: Help me recover from a scam so I can buy a PS5

At post 18: Even though I am the first to acknowledge that the campaign was totally bold and daring and unprecendented and whatnot, your post was also uncalled for, unnecessarily confrontational, and above all absolutely not true. I don't do that, I hate this entitled spoiled attitude. I just gave it a try. I was not holding a gun to anyone's head forcing them to donate or to even give it a thought. Besides, I do have substantial material that was linked to to prove that I am actually doing something and am passionate about it, and believe it or not, this kind of work might be important for many and might be one of the million pieces of the puzzle that will eventually help to speed up progression in the overall accessibility of mainstream gaming.I don't know what all the rage is about. People can and do put up fundraisers for their own weddings or honeymoons, and do get money. Just like there is no law preventing them from putting such stuff up, there is no obligation forcing anyone to donate. There is as much free will in the decision as there is in everyone deciding whether to get a cup of tea or coffee for breakfast. In any case, the campaign has now been funded nearly twice over. I closed it the moment I picked up my phone and laptop in the morning. I'd have closed it sooner if I'd noticed. Should have set up an automation to close it the moment it reached the goal, but that didn'T seem to be doable with a Paypal pool.Lukas

Re: Help me recover from a scam so I can buy a PS5

Hi all, thanks for all your posts so far, and especially thanks to those who do not sympathize for expressing this fact in a civil way. I can definitely understand where you are coming from.1. I didn't think of the .online TLD possibly putting some people off or raising valid concerns. I was just thinking of a URL that would be unique, unlikely to get confused with any other and easy to remember and type. I'm not going to change it now, when the campaign is already in progress, but good point to consider in general.2. I've learned my lesson very well. Looking back, I don't even get how I could have made such a stupid reckless childish mistake at all, and I do fully acknowledge that. It was the first time, and will certainly be the last. The particular site I used has no reviews at all, it's just that party A places an ad and party B responds to it directly, not via any facilities provided by the site. There are no guarantees, safeguards, feedback mechanisms like reviews, etc. Still, it¨s probably the most frequently used site of this kind in my country, and certainly the most accessible. one. I just wanted to act quickly in case he did in deed have a real PS5, so that he wouldn't sell it away to another person sooner. That's not an excuse, though, sure. As I said, lesson learned, point taken. I don't need any entity other than my own conscience to remind me.3. Times are certainly harder than usuall all over the world this year. The situation fortunately is not as dire in the Czech Republic as you seem to describe yet, though, with people going homeless because of the current times, and I didn't realize someone could be offended. I don't feel I did an immoral thing, however. Everyone is free to start any kind of campaign they want, there are lots of personal campaigns on sites like Gofundme. Likewise, everyone is free to donate to what they like and ignore what they dislike. Noone is obliged to do anything. I've been through my fair share of both kinds of campaigns before. I did fall for the scam out of my own mistake and I was an asshole, I'm not denying this or pretending for it to be any different. In other words, I'm not starting up a scam of my own. And trust me, I've been in a situation where I had no money to pay the rent in the past, just as I once spent the last bit of money on a campaign that mattered to me, and it was not a fancy new postmodern Kickstarter gadget.4. I am already two thirds of the way through to the goal, and I sincerely appreciate every single donation in these times.5. I don't use Reddit, it's not very popular in the Czech Republic. However, all the donations I have received so far have come from my country. Honestly, I expected like-minded gamers and consultants from abroad to donate, that's why I put up the English version up front. The pool is updated in real-time when clicked. I'll try to research a way to link the counter to the main page, though.Once again, thanks for all the replies so far.Lukas

Help me recover from a scam so I can buy a PS5

Hi all,I know this is really out of the blue but I would like to ask everyone to please check the following fundraiser page if you can. All the details are explained there. I am not asking for fellow blind gamers to donate to my cause, that does not feel morally right to me, but for spending a couple minutes to give it a look if you can, and share it among your friends and social media. The more people that can see this, the more likely it is for me to succeed.helpmebuyps5.onlineThanks a lot in advance!Lukas

Re: I feel I am ready to publish my poems, but I need some help first

Thanks a lot. Yeah, I have actually considered that quite a bit, the only thing that seems daunting to me at the moment is finding, and learning to use, a decent software to produce the ebook with. Although I'm on a macBook Pro, I have actually given up on using macOS entirely and run only bootcamped Windows on it. That might change with Bug Sur though, who knows. I'll certainly at least give it a try.By the way, that was just a typo, but I find it so amusing that I'm going to keep it that way. :-DSo, can I assume you haven't found out anything specific, since you haven't criticized or pointed out anything? If so, then that's just brilliant. I mean, I know how I feel about it and what I think, I think I know the language well enough to realize for myself if there is anything obviously wrong or not, but I can never be really sure, being a non-native speaker. Thanks a ton once again.Lukas

I Don't Want to Love YouIt was one hell of a dance,Anger leads to acceptance.Strong and sweet and painful, too,the story of me and you.Same person and not a chance,it is hard to stay as friends.I got less but wanted more, about time to close the door.Read the book to know the lore. What had I been struggling for?I don't want to love you! There are days to go through, there are tasks and chores, old friends and new doors. There is air to breathe, there are days to grieve. There's fun to be had,and times to feel sad.Girl who's found her boy, feelings to destroy, moments for some joy.I feel like a stranger, loving you is danger.I'm still full of memories,I still long and I still miss. How long can I live through this? There was passion, there was bliss, hidden tears in every kiss.I was weak and unaware,I didn't live where you were. When together, we decline, you're just not meant to be mine.Need to learn to live anew,to find peace but without you.Thank you for the unspoken,my heart will get unbroken. My love's too young to just die, therefore I must say good bye.I don't want to love you! There are days to go through, there are tasks and chores, old friends and new doors. There is air to breathe, there are days to grieve. There's fun to be had,and times to feel sad.Girl who's found her boy, feelings to destroy, moments for some joy.I feel like a stranger, loving you is danger.

Hi all, this is an unusual favor I'd like to ask you for, I know. But of course, nobody is obliged to do anything about this if they don't want to. The thing is that I am about to start reaching out to a couple publishers in my country to see if I can get my first book of poems actually published. However, there are also some poems in English that I would like to include, and I would like to ask the native speakers around here, if anyone is interested, to check them out and let me know if there are any language errors. I don't want to be overly confident where it's not due. :-)I'll post the first two relevant poems in separate follow-up posts.By the way, they are about two different and unrelated people and experiences, so if it makes anyone think about them, don't try to put them together. Thanks a lot in advance and sorry for bothering anyone who is not interested in this kind of thing.Lukas

Stood My GroundIt all started in a snap,She laid me a nasty trap.Didn't ask for what I found,Hurt like hell but stood my ground. She forced me her desperate hand,My world shattered into sand.I was speechless, I was bound,I struggled but stood my ground. She invoked an inner surgeAnd I tiptoed on the verge.I was caught before I drowned,Don't know how but stood my ground. She was entranced, she was nice,It was her who rolled the dice,She wanted to cut a slice,She offered fake paradise,I refused to sacrifice.I was longing and I missed it,All my words she rudely twisted. What was meant to be would last,I was tested and I passed. She sang to me like a doveBut I can't love without love.Didn't dare to speak her name,She's a wreck but I'm the same.I noticed it was a she,She just hoped to steal my qi.I was tempted, nearly fell,Still in time I broke the spell.I was lonely, so confused,Yet in time I killed the fuse.I wanted a loving muse,Her intent was just to use.I reminded her of him,She gave not a single whim.He gave a few wounded yelps,I heard him but didn't help.I'm nothing like a white mageBut I'm free to turn the page. Her demise is drawing nearer,I can still look in the mirror.I was there but now I'm here,I have nothing I should fear.Though I'm blind, I know to steer,To her, I preferred my beer.I'm a guitar, so to say,But she knew not how to play.My strings all broke in dismay,There's a bill she'd never pay.I don't need a second glance,I don't live to take a chance.Should anyone touch my friends,I will stand up in defense. It was fine to watch her tread,She tried out but tore the thread. In the end, I can be glad,She couldn't see where this led,She shan't forget what I said.It was hard to break apart,Poisonous dart in the heart,I was dumbstruck, she was smart,She knew how to play her part,This is over as it starts.Won the fight but lost the round,Strong enough to stand my ground. She was weak but I was strong,I knew I'd be doing wrong. There is nothing I regret,Soon I learned that she's a threat. She knew how to mess me up,I was brave enough to stop. What she did just wasn't fair,I need much but it's not her.It was more than one could bear,Still she was left just to stare. She left me a bleeding scar.Screamed in pain but now I'm far.She pierced my soul with a wire,Not everything's 'bout desire. What she did was based on lust,All I need is genuine trust. With a smile, she crunched my wings,Left her dirt on sacred things.Queen of hearts, and ace, and king,I managed to close the ring.As I reached to close the door,She still turned back for some more.Shook my head and swayed my face,I sent her back to her place.I think that's a decent score. When I left her, I so cried,She did her best and she tried,She caused me a lot of painBut her effort was in vain. She pretended she was pure,She figured I need a cure.Even though she lost her charm,I don't wish her any harm. Now I hear my glory bells, She caught her prey somewhere else.

Unfortunately, the TTS on the PS 4 only works if you have your language set to English (US). Not only that, but it only works in a few parts of the base UI, and the whole Store is one of the places where it doesn't work at all, so you have to purchase through the mobile app or the website. I haven't used the app at all yet but the website works fine.Luk,as

Okay, everyone, thanks for the tips, especially Jessie's video. Man, I had no idea there were that many parts of the UI where the TTS didn't actually work. Thought it was just a matter of the store, which is accessible on the web, and of the TTS being only available in English, which wouldn't be that big of a deal forme. But hearing "TTS unavailable here" literally everywhere but in the main and settings menu, that's just not the way you do it. That's unacceptable in 2020. So yeah, I see now, and I agree with most of you. I'll wait around for the PS 5 and carefully watch the community's reactions and impressions upon launch before making my decision. Not to mention that, as some of you rightfully sight, who knows, some more of the exclusive games for the PS 5 might be accessible because of utilizing the 3D audio engine. Until then, I'll just keep bothering my brother daily until I'm done with the game on his PS 4 Pro. :-DLukas

Seriously considering getting a PS4 just because of The Last of Us 2

Hi folks, firstly, I'm not sure if this topic is better suited for the off-topic or the general discussion room, so I'm sorry if this is the wrong one, and anyone with the power to do so, feel free to move it if that is the case. With this out of the way, I'm probably about to purchase a used PS4 just for this one game because this is a milestone in the history of the videogaming industry, and I don't want to be left out after having grown up on some seriously old games for the Sega Megadrive 2 and the like, of course the PSX, and having retained my interest over the last 20 years. The question is: I don't have a TV and I don't think I need to get one for the console. I believe I should be able to use it just fine if I keep the language set to English (other languages don't have the TTS for the screen reader, or so I heard), just with headphones or over WIFI and Remote Play. Is that assumption correct? And if so, could someone please direct me on how to turn on TTS to start setting the console up if I just power it on for the first time and plug in my headphones? Thanks,Lukas

Help needed with my research

Dear community,I would very much appreciate your help by filling out the Google form the link to which can be found below.https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp … sp=sf_linkLet me also directly paste the form description as it best describes its purpose and what I need from you.Your experience with guide dogsThis survey will help me to prepare my presentation for the anual conference of the IGDF (International Guide Dog Federation) members, which is supposed to be held in Prague, Czech Republic this year, i.e. my town and the capital of the country. The presentation focuses on the various myths, misconceptions and possible unrealistic or false expectations related to receiving a client's first guide dog or considering getting one, and the various kinds of potential clients the schools should be prepared to deal with but might not currently be in some cases. This survey is only aimed at individual clients (either current, past or potential guide dog owners), not at trainers or entire guide dog schools. Please, if you do decide to fill it out, answer all questions correctly and to the best of your abilities. If you have never had a guide dog and are not considering getting one in the near future either, you may still want to answer if you find any of the questions interesting. Even the opinions, expectations and possible misconceptions of people who have never owned a guide dog and don't currently want one are valuable data for my presentation. The survey is quite longer than usual, as it contains 45 questions, most of which should take you less than a minute to fill out, however others give you more room to express yourself if you desire, thus taking more time to complete. No personally identifiable information is collected or needed, although I do ask for your age, sex, country and visual impairment. I don't ask for your name, though, and you may skip a question if you prefer not to answer it. If you wish, you can provide your e-mail at the end to receive the results after I have processed them if you are interested. If the rules of the conference allow for that (I still have to figure it out), I might even be able to send you the entire presentation, either once it's ready or some time after the conference.Thank you very much in advance for your time and for your valuable answers. That's it. If you are willing to spare some of your free time to help me out with this, I will be most grateful. To all the others, I'm sorry for taking up your time and for posting a completely off-topic thread.I wish everyone sufficient strength to cope during these times ruled by an unwelcome and undesired crown. :-)Best regards,Lukas;+

Re: Any fello transgender people on here?

Yeah, I noticed many people tend to write the way they would speak in person. In these cases, you can afford even sarcastic jokes or whatever as it's much more apparent, from the tone of your voice, your facial _expression_ if one can see that and everything else, how your words should be interpreted. It's best to refrain from any emotional or potentially twistable words as much as possible in written discourse in order to minimize the risk of misinterpretation.I'm not saying this to back any of the offenders in this topic. In fact, I personally agree with all the moderator actions that have been carried out here thus far, and am glad they happened. However, I'm just pointing out something that's usually quite easy to overlook or forget about, something I went through myself years ago, and something those who do it the most usually don't even have a clue about. It's difficult for many people to learn and improve two different techniques of their own personal discourse in an age where coherent reading is becoming less and less mainstream. The most many people read these days are posts on social networks, and learning how to interpret written text from these things is not the way to go. I find it surprising that some of the younger generation are still even willing to read a couple words at a time every now and then at all. Then, it's only logical that if you don't know how to read properly, you won't know how to write properly, and vice versa. Of course, a decent person should try their best to learn from their mistakes. For that, though, they would have to acknowledge the mistakes pointed out to them in the first place.Lukas

Such clear signs usually manifest themselves only after the disorder has been developing quietly for a longer time. I'm not saying it does have to be schizophrenia specifically, just that it sounded quite a lot like it. It can be anything else. If you felt pressure on the side of your head or whatever, excellent, then it could even be a tumor or you could have hurt yourself pretty badly physically. No human can ever do anything to themselves that's purely mental activity that would cause their brain to overload and manifest on a physical level, not to mention for almost a week. You can feel serious mental fatigue, sure, lose energy or your mood, but as long as it's not a medical condition, you just get a bit of rest and it wears off. Do some reading on the neurosciences and neurology rather than philosophy. But most importantly, I think it would be a lot better for you in the long run if you could put your paranoia of human institutions aside for a bit and activelly sought for professional assistance.I'm solitary as well but that's not an excuse to ignore clear warnings your body is trying to give you. Or is even your own wellfare not important to you either?Lukas

Deathstar, can I ask where you live?Lord Lundin, do you know the best way to cause a blinkie claustrophobia? Simple, put their cane in a bucket. Muahahahaha, isn't that so very funny to an average Joe? Maybe even to yourself, cause I myself did it find it funny for a while at some point, and people belonging to a certain ethnicity, community or social group usually tend to accept black humor or dark humor (sorry, don't know the proper word in English) from their peers. However, would you laugh at it if that average Joe stopped by you in the street and threw this in your face without saying a word first, being a total stranger? Well, maybe you personally would, I can't tell as I don't know you, but I'm 100 % convinced most visually impaired people wouldn't, just as most hearing-impaired people wouldn't laugh at sarcastic jokes about hearing from random passers-by, etc. Why is that so difficult to understand? Technically speaking, although the online presence tends to soften and hide this to a great extent, we all are nothing more than a bunch of totally random strangers shouting at each other in the street or in a pub.Oh, and by the way, why should a blind person receive special education, assistive tools, sometimes professional coaching to learn a particular set of skills, counseling and support, guide dogs, whatever at all, just because they're blind? That's their problem, not one of the society, isn't it? I believe there is no harm caused to anyone by my expressing this opinion. AFter all, everyone has the right to hold their own personal opinion, and we have freedom of speech in most countries these days. Why should a dynamic productive society cater to the supposed needs of individuals who are different? They should just get their affairs the hell straight and get a job and do something productive. If they claimed this was not as easy as it might seem for a good reason, and that there are a lot of issues when trying to accomplish that goal, is that this one given indivual asking the rest of the society, the majority, to pat them on the back? Why do so many people with a disability or in a closed social circle have to be so damn self-centered that the only points and feelings they can ever defend are their own? Totally useless rant that's not going to change anything anyway over.Lukas

Wing of Eternity, sorry to say this but this sounds like a very high probability of schizophrenia, dude. My brother is schizophrenic, fortunately is being treated by the human institutions that just want to control the crowd or whatever, and your description and other parts of your speech sound just like his. Plus, you are showing distorted emotional perception, cognitive difficulties, signs of detachment, chemical imbalance, inability to distinguish between the relevance and currentness of various events, and possibly other things that just can't be proven by what you said in your posts specifically. In any case, you seem to have a mental disorder of some sort. This is not said emotionally or ironically in any way, it's just plainly stating what's obvious to someone who's dealt with people with such impairments before. I'm not saying you're retarted or a fool, only that you seem to suffer from a disorder which is beyond your control and probably too serious for you to cope with it without professional assistance. So, again, that's not an insult. If you told me "you seem to be blind", why should I get offended?Lukas

Now that I've grown up a bit more, I don't like the idea of nicknames at all, it just helps to contribute to the overall anonymity and depersonification of the internet. I mean, if you start seeing nicks such as Pink Lightbulp or Speedwire (translated literally from Czech), you don't even know if you're writing to a guy or a girl. In my language, that's quite a problem. You can't even form verbs without using the proper grammatical gender.Lukas

Re: For what to live?

I'm not sure we're that low entropy, though. Whenever we take a single step, we leave thousands of dead cells and bacteria behind. Whenever we use the toilet, we leave tons of waste behind that can decompose and decay down in the sewers and further beyond. Whenever we make ourselves a cup of tea or coffee, that's a lot of heat dissipating around freely, a lot of water particles losing their coherence, and finally a lot of liquid and other materials being consumed, which can further turn into waste, etc. You get the idea. Food consuming, even reproduction, not to mention true intentional acts of destruction.I think it's more beneficial for the universe, if it in deed holds on to this rule, in the long run, to preserve many individual specimen of relatively low entropy that are more or less stable and maintain their entropy making performance over their lifespan in order to achieve greater entropy in the end, rather than to have to come up with new, more powerful systems all the time that however last for a shorter while. After all, mankind has made up some really shining examples of entropy. If the atomic bomb and other weapons of mass destruction are not prime examples of some pretty darn effective entropy, then I don't know what is.Lukas

There is a theory, although I can't remember who wrote it or first came up with it, that the only truly universal law is for all things to keep increasing their efficiency at entropy, or proceeding towards entropy. However, for that to happen, if the universe wants to keep increasing entropy and not just remain stuck at a single point forever, there has to be ever more life and growth. Basically, if you want to keep getting ever better at destroying ever more things ever more quickly and ever more permanently, you have to keep generating ever more and ever more advanced things at an even greater rate. However, I'm not even sure if I'm entirely convinced about that, although it does seem to make sense. As for why I personally live, I wish I knew. I haven't found a solid reason to live or a solid purpose yet that I could keep justifying for longer than a couple days, weeks or months at the longest. I've done many things, most of which had excellent results. I've encountered many different people, activities, places and experiences. Even trying to have fun, go out with people, read, make music, write, program, or just hang out, kill time and maybe drink something or whatever, gets old pretty quickly. Being alive just because I was born, with nothing to truly follow and strive for for so long, is really deprivating. I've had many occasions when I had to muster all the will I could to prevent myself from committing suicide. I knew the people closest to me would be shattered by me doing that, it's too difficult to gather the courage to do that, and there is also the reason of what if I am going to be able to find a purpose some day? That'd be a thing to truly be sorry about.I don't think I'm like a deprived sociopath or something, though. I am capable of love, close stable relationships, I do have them, and I can truly enjoy the moment and feel the joy if the circumstances are right. There are people, animals and things I really love. It would be much easier if I could say I actually live for them, if I knew I'd be capable of sacrificing my life for them if it came to that, but I can't. I don't even think I'm pitying myself, either. I'm just openly stating the way I feel, without any emotions. When I write about this, it feels as calm to me as writing say about a mathematical problem would. This has nothing to do with my blindness, either. There are many things I deeply enjoy doing and consider valuable. I'm blind, so what? There are even some things sighted people couldn't experience. It's just that the majority of my days, I really find it annoying and saddening that I have to exist, being a sentient entity. For what?Edit: I have several jobs and other duties that I have to fulfill. Some of them I do because I enjoy doing that, others because I have to and there would be sanctions, if only in the form of receiving less money, if I didn't. Yet, I can't claim that this is my purpose, this is what I live for, this is worth being here for. Re: Any fello transgender people on here?

At post 46, exactly my thoughts! I agree with every single word of that, being another non-trans. I would just like to add that the loud mouths problem is very apparent in all communities I've encountered so far, including the blind, other disabilities, the LGBT+, the gipsies, other ethnicities, everything. Because people inherently need to belong to a herd of some sort at the genetic level, we just form communities for mostly everything these days. I also dislike the ones who join such communities just because it seems to be some kind of perverd fashion these days. Then, the ones who truly need to be in that community because of their genuine state and to receive the support of others become inaudible across the voices of all the others who are basically just snobs or bored experimenters, more or less. It's important to never forget that the loud mouths of either community that are usually seen in the media are in fact only the minority, because the others try to lead a normal integrated life without being too obvious, perhaps with as many adjustments and as much support as necessary but as best as they can, therefore they are never that noticeable. Noticeable, because again, the herd quickly notices anything that's different.Lukas

But yeah, even though this makes me slightly uncomfortable and I don't feel any urge to do more research on this at the moment, at least I don't brush that off or condemn just the very thought of that because of its unfamiliarity, which is precisely what many people instinctively do. I don't mind that many do it, it's just the way their genes are. At post 23 and everyone: I'm not trans myself, I do identify as a perfectly happy male, nor do I know anyone who is trans in person, but this attitude saddens me.I was born totally blind and there is no way for the current science to fix my condition, even if I wanted to go through such a process these days, which I don't. I have microphtalmus microcornea, which means that my eyes are physically like quarter the size they should be and half of the crucial things, like the retina, are missing completely. They just never grew inside the eyes. So, even if there was a way to grow completely artificial new eyes from scratch that the body would accept, there would still be the issue of cortical blindness. To put it as simply as possible, my brain has never seen a thing, not even a photon of light, and it's been like this for 30 years now. The brain has already fully developed and grown, so even if I could somehow magically receive new eyes, true complete natural human eyes and not an electronic gimmicky replacement, the brain wouldn't know what to do about the sudden unknown new flow of information, and it would never ever be able to learn how to categorize and process that.I've dealt with it and just live my life as best as I can without any mental issues, or at least without mental issues related to my blindness, but would I choose this willingly if I had the option before I was born? Of course, absolutely not.Do you get the connection?'For trans people, there is at least some possibility of improvement. For many blindness conditions or less severe visual impairments, there is, too. Why not make use of them when they're available? I mean, if there was an option for me to see anything other than painful shapeless spots of light, which I could only achieve after years and years of ceaseless painful rehabilitation anyway, if there was a way for me that wouldn't basically involve re-learning my entire life all over again, starting with the most simple things such as getting dressed or using the toilet, I'd probably go for it, or I would at least strongly consider it. Basically, I believe that if anyone has the option to at least try and get a noticeable improvement that would outweigh the disadvantages in the long run, yet they claim they don't want or need that, they're either hypocrites or lying to themselves for fear of the unknown. Because strictly pragmatically speaking, they're preventing themselves from seizing an opportunity.Or, imagine another situation: You were born with somehow fully knowing a certain language without having to learn the meanings of the individual words first. Yet, everyone around you speaks a completely different language, perhaps your parents left you in another country and some family adopted you, and for some unknown reason your brain is unable to learn a different language any more. How would you feel about that? Please, don't take this personally, don't be offended, I'm just going to ask a genuinely curious question. Take it as a bit of my personal research. Are you a believer or practitioner of some specific major religion? I've found out that most of the least tolerant and liberal and most narrow-minded people are strong believers, the kind of believers that just accept someone's dogmas as truths set in stone without ever paying them a single original unique thought. After all, all religions were made by people for people. So, even if there was some grain of truth in them, if the original prophets perhaps wanted to explain an inate knowledge and they just didn't know more precise words back then, so they had to stick to metaphors and analogies, they've long since been filtered and misinterpreted many times, sometimes intentionally, sometimes with a genuine conviction that it's going to be for the greater good. Words are just words, meaning there is nothing easier than to twist someone else's words to a purpose that suits your own interests better. Nobody can ever prove what the original author of the idea actually thought. Religions are a tool, usually for controlling the ancient animal-like-behaving masses with fear. And who knows, what if someone discovered a piece of knowledge the ruling class needs to keep to themselves? Nah, we can't let that happen. Better keep them all in a controlled crowd of obedient, thoughtless sheep. But that's getting way off-topic.If people can be born blind, deaf, immobile, autistic or whatever, I find it only logical that a soul of one gender can be misplaced and misborn in a body of the other. Even if someone religious was confronted with the idea of a transsexual individual wanting to go through the transition, they could argue that it's the way God (or whatever other deity) meant it to be, probably for a very good reason no human can understand, perhaps punishment for the sins of your many generations of ancestors. Even if someone religious was confronted with the idea of a transsexual individual wanting to go through the transformation, they could argue that it's the way God (or whatever other deity) meant it to be, probably for a very good reason no human can understand, perhaps punishment for the sins of your many generations of ancestors. Even though I despise such thinking, it's at least understandable from

Re: should i dare the windows 10 upgrade using media creation tool

The automatic update always has a greater chance of errors due to corrupted files etc. Not that it happens very often, but the media creation tool is more likely to succeed. Plus, in case the upgrade fails, you won't have to redownload the same update files all over again. It's always best to disconnect any hardware you don't absolutely need during the update process as to minimize the chance of anything going wrong. You should have no problem though. From my experience, most of these reported errors were much more relevant like a couple years ago than they are nowadays. However, I wonder how you can run Windows 10 with only 6 gigs of ram or even less on your laptop. I wouldn't go under 16 these days, and running Windows 10 on anything under 8 would probably be slow and painful as heck.Lukas

As far as I understand it, even if you put the phone in recovery mode and connect it to iTunes, you still need to enter your Apple ID password and whatnot to proceed. There should be no way to wipe it without these credentials as far as I know. As for being able to see the screen even with brightness turned to 0, that's a good point, though. Didn't know that until now either.Lukas

Re: Behind the Curve on iPhone and Seeking Experience

Exactly, posts 18 and 19 nailed it. I also think blind people are exagerating this possibility way too much. The thief would still have to know how to turn VO off and turn brightness back to a visible level, essentially doing this all blindfolded as there is nothing visible on the screen for them at the time. If you don't use screen curtain or don't have the brightness set all the way down to 0 and fear this possibility, then that's pretty much your own problem. If you have enough vision left to use the screen, so that you actually need to have the brightness turned up, perhaps with magnification also enabled, then you probably have enough vision to also keep the attention awareness feature of face ID turned on, which means that even if someone pointed your stolen phone at your face, it would not unlock if you closed your eyes at the moment. And even if you know someone just stole your phone from you, then there is nothing easier than to turn away and cover your face. Instead of trying to force you with brute force to reveal your face and look directly into the camera, they'd probably just run straight off with the stolen phone anyway. As long as you use the passcode besides just face ID, have your Apple ID and iCloud protected with secure enough passwords, have Find my iPhone turned on, and have your SIM protected with a PIN, you're as secure as anyone else in case your phone is ever stolen. In such a scenario, even if they managed to actually unlock the phone or tried to restart it afterwards, they wouldn't be able to do much harm anyway. At least, they wouldn't be able to purchase new content or to wipe the phone completely without reauthenticating, which is what I would personally be bothered about the most if someone ever stole my iPhone. My top priority would be to get to another online device to block the phone through iCloud as soon as possible. Only then, I'd start worrying about the theft itself. And this is the case with any iPhone, no matter whether it's using face ID, touch ID or perhaps both in the future as rumored by some Apple leakers.I upgraded from a 7 Plus (which is essentially the same as the 6 Plus hardwarewise) to the XS Max, and I agree with everything the previous posters have already said. Basically, face ID and the lack of a home button, even a virtual one, are probably going to be the greatest changes you are going to notice. Softwarewise, a lot has changed since the 6 Plus or 7 Plus have first been released, but you could update to the latest iOS even with these old phones anyway, and despite some settings having been moved elsewhere in the menus or some new annoying bugs which hadn't been present in previous iterations of iOS, the founding principles and the behavior of VO are still mostly the same. By the way, I think the latest iOS is not as infested with show stopping bugs as some posters at Applevis might perhaps make you seem believe, at least not in my own experience.3D touch was in deed a hardware thing, first introduced with the 6S, I believe. In the latest versions of iOS, they have disabled it for all phones anyway, and they did some more work to slightly improve the possibilities of haptic touch, i.e. essentially long press and hold, which is what has always been there even for these older models.Lukas

Question on the accessibility of a combined washer and drier

2019-02-08 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : lukas via Audiogames-reflector

Question on the accessibility of a combined washer and drier

Hi all, sorry to be bothering with this question here but unfortunately several local discussion sites and eshops themselves yielded no response at all so far.I've been strongly considering the AEG L9WBC61B washer drier. I had owned an older model by AEG before, in the previous apartment where I lived with my ex in a different city, and I would really love to get one now but naturally a newer model. I've heard and read they're even more powerful, reliable and less prone to failure these days. I've had great experience with the previous AEG, so I'd like to avoid having to resort to a different, unfamiliar brand if possible.Does anyone know or have this particular machine or at least a different one but from the same series, i.e. series 9? I'm wondering about the accessibility of the controls on the appliance. The older (series 8, I believe) model had hardware buttons that were all tactile. As far as I understand this model, having had a sighted person describe the photos in the user's guide to me, the display itself is not touch-enabled on this unit and there still are several tactile hardware controls such as the power button and the dial to choose the required cycle, but other buttons are not tactile. They are supposed to be individual touch, sensory buttons but located outside the display itself. If that's in deed the case, it should mean the unit would still be accessible with no vision. Since the buttons are supposed to be located outside the display and thus never dynamically change their position or meaning, it should be feasible to just glue some tactile markers (rubber or a single brailled letter or something) slightly above each button so that I would be able to locate the required function precisely.Does anyone have any experience or input on this matter at all? I'd be extremely grateful for any informed response. Thanks,Lukas

Re: How accurate are espeaks languages and dialects?

Czech is quite good. Of course, Espeak is always going to be robotic, but that's one of its main points, I would say, to be lightweight, fast as hell and more responsive than any other synthesizer. Some phonemes, like the r, the z or the ch, for instance, could be a little less emphatically pronounced, they are clearly taken from other languages, but Czech is good in that it usually has just one phoneme for one written letter, so it actually sounds pretty understandable in that regard. Anyone remember the old Eureka A4 or Eureka Advanced, or even the Aria from the Robotron company? If you understood these well enough to use them daily, Czech Espeak sounds nice compared to that. :-)Lukas

Just open up the addons website through the Manage addons item in NVDA's tool menu, and then click on addons under development. While you're at it, you should also really get the addon updater from there. That's the best thing that could ever have happened to NVDA apart from improved Word support, native audio theme management and improved verbosity options.Lukas

Re: Bye bye, firefox

Well, Orko, the latest ESR is actually 52, not 56, so I see why some people might be concerned about using that instead of more recent versions if you are not a big enterprise or something. In any case, as soon as I read about the whole accessibility situation with Firefox 58, I switched to the development snapshots of NVDA (the next branch) as well as Firefox itself (it's called Firefox Nightly in this case). They seem to work exceptionally well together for me since then, perhaps even better than before. I just have to stand a Firefox update approximately once a day, which doesn't even take an entire minute on my computer and with my connection though. NVDA updates take longer, yes, but they are less frequent and you can have them downloaded but installed later, when it's more convenient for you, since 2018.1, which most of you will actually yet have to see when it comes out officially.Lukas

I've tried both the official build of NVDA as well as the development snapshots, both with the same results. I've now returned back to the snapshots, since I like their update frequency better and I figured I may as well stick to them when both builds acted exactly the same.My system is installing updates regularly as expected, and I've been using Windows 10 App Essentials since the very beginning as well, configured to use the development update channel. Just to make sure, I tried it right now, upon reading the last post in this thread, with the latest available update, but still with exactly the same result.I'm absolutely running out of any plausible or inplausible ideas whatsoever. At this point, I'm not even frustrated any more, just resigned. I'm officially giving up and putting up with getting used to the stupid and awkward placement of the alt and Windows keys.Lukas

Re: Accessible key remapper

All right, so I decided to give Sharp Keys another go based on your recommendations. The main program screen is accessible for the most part, except for one control that NVDA just reads as pannel, but the trouble starts when I click the add button. There are two controls, apparently the lists of keys to choose from, that NVDA just reads as unknown even when arrowing through them, no matter what. And when I click either of the two Type key buttons with different accelerator keys associated, I get no accessible feedback at all.I downloaded the thing from Codeplex which seems to be its official and most recent code repository. The version number is 3.5.I've had this weird issue with NVDA recently, though, where it reads stuff as unknown or pannel that previously used to work fine. This started as soon as I started using this Windows 10 Pro Fall Creators Update in Bootcamp on my macBook Pro. Except for Sharp Keys, I get this in various installers all the time, and as I said, these used to work fine as far as I can remember. I was using the NVDA development snapshots from the next branch, but even after I decided to uninstall NVDA completely and then reinstalled only the latest official build, i.e. version 2017.4, with no more development snapshots, the problem still persists. So, does anyone have any idea as to what I could do, either about the underlying NVDA issue or about Sharp Keys itself? Thanks,Lukas

Either that, or I was no longer able to figure the right way to remap a key when coming back to it after several years.I've tried Sharp Keys and another one whose name I can't remember any more, but with the same results.I'm even willing to do that manually in the registry, if anyone could give some pointers. Thanks,Lukas

Re: email clients: TB is making me a rather mad mad man

Thunderbird is not sluggish for me at all on Windows 10 Creators Update, 64-bit, the Pro edition. I believe if you have a decent computer (anything with more than 4 GB of RAM and preferably an SSD, although Thunderbird also worked fine for me on my former Windows 7 Lenovo laptop which had a regular HDD), it should be able to run like a breeze. However, you have to make sure your local account is accessing the server through Imap and not Pop3 (nobody should use that any more, anyway), that you have disabled many of the toolbars and pannels in the view menu, such as the quick filter one, that you are displaying messages in new windows rather than pannels, that you have disabled the feature that makes it possible for Windows to search through the full text of messages, and quite a couple of other things like that. Some of them are hidden relatively deep down in the huge Options screen and they can be tiny things that might be easy to miss but making sure you have them set the proper way actually makes a whole world of difference. Many of these only make navigation more tedious than it needs to be by adding controls into the window that a blind user probably never needs anyway, but others are a lot worse than that, having a serious impact on the software's performance when used in conjunction with a screen reader. So, to sum it up, after spending some time with TB making a proper initial setup, it does pay off really well in the end.Lukas

Re: Solved: Serious issue with Bootcamp audio drivers

Hi Joseph, thank you for such a fast reply. Actually, I was sure since the very beginning that it was not happening when running on speakers and that the headphones worked fine on other hardware. That's why I was confident enough to label the issue as specific and isolated to the particular Bootcamp audio drivers for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update for the given laptop. The idea that this question belongs in the official Apple Support forums is a good one that has not occurred to me before. However, since I grew so fed up with the problem that I built a quick fix or rather a workaround for it in BGT in two or three minutes since creating this topic, I will now probably only give those forums a quick look to see if it's in deed common among this specific macBook users on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. In the meantime, if anyone is interested in my fix because of experiencing the same issue, let me know, I'll either send it to you privately or put up a Dropbox download link eventually if there is more of you. The program is nothing more than a compiled BGT script with an included pack file. This pack holds just a single wave file in stereo, 16 bits, 44,1 khz, containing exactly one second of silence, created in Goldwave. The program runs without displaying any window, loads the unencrypted wave file from the pack into a sound object, and then keeps running an infinite loop, waiting for five milliseconds on every iteration and making sure to play the file if it is not currently actively playing.I added a link to this utility into my Startup folder, so after logging into the system and waiting for about half a minute or a little less, until the system gets to load this kind of programs that are supposed to run automatically after boot, the program works like a charm. Simple and elegant as that, on first attempt!!! :-)Lukas

Serious issue with Bootcamp audio drivers

Serious issue with Bootcamp audio drivers

Hi everyone,I hope someone is going to be able to provide an answer to this question as quickly as possible, as it's having quite a serious impact on my productivity and ability to even use the computer at all, right now and the whole time. :-)I have recently got a macBook Pro 2017, 15 inch, i.e. the largest and most recent currently available model with touch bar. I'm not going to delve too deeply into the issues with macOS that finally convinced me to give Bootcamp a try and return back to the good old Windows, with a mixture of gratitude and humbleness, let's just suffice it to say that the sole two voices available for my native language on macOS can never match the incredible speeds of NVDA's built-in Espeak NG, and that the relatively frequent, random, unexplained crashes of VoiceOver in situations like some less common websites in Safari, are enough of an issue for me to see macOS rather as a potential alternative platform for light entertainment, and to do anything that involves syncing with the iPhone on it. Any serious productive work, especially anything that needs to be done quickly, use Windows. All right, got everything up and running in Bootcamp, am on the latest Fall Creators update and everything... But why on Earth does sound always seem to be muted every few seconds when I connect my headphones? I mean, I am only using standard earphones without a built-in microphone, I think they are made by Creative, in either case they were a pretty cheap pair, and whenever there is a slight bit of silence and then NVDA is about to speak a new phrase, like when using quick navigation to move around a page in Firefox, the audio output sounds like it has to return all the way back to the configured volume from complete silence. It almost seems to me that it's doing this for the reason of saving power at times when there is nothing to be played, or something like that. Basically, the practical result of this behavior is that every time after even a second or so long pause in speech, the next chunk of speech has the first syllable or two cut off. That makes my work much slower and some things very difficult to figure out. This never happens with the built-in speakers, the audio is perfectly clear all the time when using speakers instead of headphones. I have checked all the settings in the Sound and audio control pannel that I could think of, with no results. And there doesn't seem to be any third party bloatware like a Dolby software or anything like that, either.Does anyone have any idea as to what I could do about this issue? Has anyone else experienced it?Do I have the only option of waiting for Apple to perhaps eventually update the Bootcamp audio driver? Would installing an alternative driver help? Would an USB sound card help? Or anything at all? Many thanks for a reply in advance,Lukas

Simply open the folder in question without a screen reader, if you can do that confidently and reliably, type out "nvda" literally, and press enter. Re: Battery life on an MBP with Bootcamp

I've read that those Macs with both an integrated and a dedicated graphics card are unable to switch between the two automatically in bootcamped Windows and are always using the dedicated one, so that might be one reason for getting lower battery life in Windows than in Mac OS if your computer does in deed have two graphics cards. Also, have you tried fiddling around with your power management schemes in Windows? That might also possibly help you get a couple more hours out of your battery. Just an idea.Lukas

Re: the Helen Keller Conspiracy

Ÿou could hardly prove that nowadays, one way or the other. However, since she has written stuff with more content than that later on in her life, which is obviously attributed to herself alone, i.e. without aid, and she is said to be a genius by some authorities, I wouldn't be very surprised if these were in deed her very own thoughts even at that age.If I remember correctly, she still had to rely on her teacher to actually write for her at that age, i.e. Keller spelled her thoughts in words using the finger alphabet into the teacher's hand (this alphabet does in deed convey the concept of true spelling letter by letter, by the way) and the teacher then wrote that out on paper. I read a book by a local author which thoroughly maps Keller's entire life, and it's also highly acclaimed for the author having spent dozens of years getting to know all the various available resources on Keller's life in order to be as accurate as possible, which nicely portrays the obvious and incredibly fast developments. Her writing style as well as her expresion ability in general were literally, noticeably improving day by day at a certain age. Not to mention that there were many people even then, at her time, who were doing the same thing as you, refusing to believe that a girl of her age and with her disability could have expressed such thoughts uniquely by herself.Lukas

Regarding Bluetooth audio latency, I'm really curious to see the actual performance of the new Apple chip in their Airpods, when these finally start shipping that is. I'm not interested in any marketing talk, I just want to see the actual results. I do tend to believe it's going to be better than other Bluetooth audio headsets currently out there, but I am skeptical in that it could actually match the no latency at all of the good old 3.5 MM jack. And by the way, Stevejobs, thanks for starting this topic in the first place. Your opinions really gave me the best laugh I've had in days. Either you're down right a troll, or you are just ignorant of the fact that the man is long dead, or you believed that few of us actually knew. In any case, the result was really amusing. :-)Not to mention that the former CEO of Apple would hardly come up to such a specific site for such a specific community and actually start asking concerned questions here. If a
n Apple official ever were to approach a community that represents only a fractional percentage of their customer base in the first place, it would be official communication with a site like Applevis or something similar. On another note, I really love it when someone claims things like the non-moving home button is going to worsen accessibility, or that things just break, or whatever. How do those people know? It's just a personal opinion based on ignorance, or to put it more politely, lack of actual knowledge and experience with the device, yet they are so convinced about their own limited narrow point of view that they keep proclaiming it so loudly as though it were actual, proven fact. There are times I can only wish I just had such high self-esteem. :-)There is a Czech saying that summarizes this generally spread attitude quite nicely. Excuse the language but it says: He knows shit but he knows it for sure. :-DLukas

Re: Awesome news and asking for your help

Hi Nikola, congratulations on the new library. I'm glad to hear of it and will certainly be buying it when money permits, no matter the payment method, although I would prefer standard payment for this kind of project myself. Even the previous library was not bad but many particular sounds just were not suitable for the kind of audiogames that I've been making. So, a bigger library with more and better sounds is always good news. :-)Just to clarify the purpose, why exactly would you prefer a campaign? What else do you need to fund? Is the library not completely made yet, or you just want to make sure you are going to get a certain amount of money off it if not enough people bought it directly, or what?Like I said, I would prefer direct payment for this, but I'm not against a campaign either. I've supported several in the past and I do like the philosophy of campaigns as such, so no problem there. Haven't heard of Gofundme before, either,
but that platform definitely sounds interesting, so I'll certainly check it out for possible campaigns to support.Another alternative to Kickstarter that you might want to consider is Indiegogo. I believe the site is just indiegogo.com but you may want to Google it just to make sure.Just like Kickstarter, this is meant for creative work and similar projects, and it also seemed a bit more accessible, and less cluttered and thus easier to navigate, and also the website as such seemed to be much faster and more responsive to me, when I supported NVDA Remote on it. Unlike Kickstarter, however, you do get to keep the money here even if you don't fully meet the goal, so that could be an interesting option for you in this regard.By the way, I have also voted already, my vote was for direct payment but this message should explain my reasoning. Thanks for the good news, good luck with the library, and I'll certainly be buying it no matter what if you
do provide a demo or preview of some sort and I find the quality improvement worth it. :-)Hope this helps,Lukas

Well, I don't know what version of NVDA you last tried to use, but it definitely can announce this kind of things. Yes, it does have to be turned on (or off in a few cases, respectively), but I personally see that as an advantage. I wouldn't like to be cluttered by all the possible formatting info being announced all at once by default. It does tell you when you start or stop typing in italics and bolt respectively, and when reading and browsing the text, it can either announce the formatting changes automatically if configured to do so, which might cause some lag which is either more or less prominent depending on your system, etc, or the announcement can be triggered manually with the designated keystroe at the exact moment when it's convenient to you.Lukas

Re: If The Gov Cared About Disabled People

I'm not for a 24/7 available driver, in fact I am even against some countries where they resolve the situation of blind people by providing them several taxi rides a month for free, as that faintly supports laziness and has a great potential to inhibit independence and mobility skills. But I'd be so excited about driverless cars, both for a faster, more secure and more ecological public transport as well as from the POV of a blind person, but unfortunately I know I won't probably live long enough to be legally allowed, or even rich enough in fact, to get one. :-)I'm surprised many countries seem to have no mechanical money recognition devices like this whose obvious power is their simplicity and thus reliability. They don't rely on your smartphone running, having enough battery power, its screen reader talking, the OS not crashing, etc, etc, etc... Ours is such a tiny little piece of plastic that I carry it inside my wallet along with the actual mon
ey, just like my credit card or ID card, so it's no more unwanted additional hassle to carry around. That's why I'm relatively surprised to see the money recognition problem for most countries and currencies being resolved through smartphone apps. To a Czech blind person, this feels like trying to build skyscrapers all over the place without having enough experience with solid, stable and easier to build small family houses, if this metaphor makes sense. In fact, if I remember correctly, I heard the notes in the Czech Republic were specifically designed to have different sizes since the very beginning because they did consider the blind in advance, so they designed this recognition device along with the parameters of our modern currency so that it would just all work together.Lukas

Yeah, I agree Braille on banknotes could actually help a lot. It would eliminate the need for all the various mechanical recognition devices. That's good to know about the US money. I haven't seen any yet and it sounds pretty bad. :-)Fortunately, here in the Czech Republic the coins all have different edges and notes are different sizes. Not enough to tell the two closest ones apart just by touch but by using the mechanical sort of recognizer that's hard to describe, it works fine. Basically, there is a rim at the device that splits it into a bottom and a top half. You put the note below the bottom half and it goes about half way inside. You just have to be careful to keep the note straight. Then, you bend the protruding part over the top half of the device, and you have tactile markers for the various sizes. Depending on how far the protruding, now bent part reaches, you can be very certain which value it is, but it just takes a while to recognize say
5 notes like this, so it's best to recognize what you have on you at the moment in advance and arrange the notes in your wallet accordingly.Lukas

Well, Dark, you could actually move the backup manually once it has been created in iTunes. The only problem is that the software wouldn't see it then, and I'm not sure if you can manually specify a file path to a backup to restore from anywhere. However, it should still help you if you wanted to create more large backups and have them stored on an external drive to save some space on your main one. You could then only choose the one you actually want to rrestore from and put it back to the iTunes folder.Lukas

It used to be possible to locate that by directly touching it and then swipe up or down on it to quickly move from one group of contacts to another, sorted alphabetically by their first letter. This stopped working sometimes around iOS 8, I believe. Re: New IPhone september 16 2016

@Nocturnus, that's a very interesting approach I haven't considered before but it definitely makes a lot of sense when looked at from this point of view. I'm still not entirely certain whether the removal of the headphone jack is a good or bad thing in principle. I believe it's a wise and possibly even innovative decision in the long run, yes, I do, but it was rushed. They should certainly have waited with this step at least until wireless charging was implemented. It makes no sense to claim that they want to get rid of the need for wires in their technology, yet still force you to use the good old charging cable while at the same time preventing you from using your trusty headphones. I would be very curious to see their Airpods in action, though, to see whether they've done something about the usual lag in transmision that Bluetooth audio devices often impose, and about the increased battery consumption on the iOS device when Bluetooth playback is active.
Once the day comes when wireless charging is standard even for the iPhone, and the Bluetooth lag and battery consumption are long gone with most accessory manufacturers, and the price difference between wired and wireless headphones is not as radical as it is today, then I would be one of the first to eeagerly accept the removal of the headphone jack for the innovation. I tend to prefer wireless over wired, but only when it works as flawlessly and comfortably as most wired devices do nowadays.@Assault_freak, I believe Phil is talking about an adapter that has already been written about on various websites made by Belkin, with Rockstar in its name. If you Google for something like Belkin Rockstar adapter, I'm sure you'll get the correct result at the top.Lukas

Raygrote is unfortunately right, I've heard this before, too. If Goldwave and other programs can see the gapless headers, then they can't probably (re)create them on save, which was probably the source of your issue. :-)Lukas

As I said, I had moved the location of my iTunes media folder a long time ago, so I can't remember the exact default location any more. It's somewhere in your app data, but I'm not sure if it was local or roaming.Just open iTunes, find preferences under the edit menu, look for the advanced tab (made sure now, sory about the first missleading guess that it would be called library), and the first object on that tab is a readonly edit field which contains the media folder's current location. From here, you can either change it to your liking using the change button right next to it, or you can just use it to know where the folder is located.Lukas

RTR_assassin, Socheat is right. It almost sounds to me like the instructions you were given on Twitter were valid for a version of NVDA that was outdated ages ago. Since the introduction of the addon manager, you should never touch the internal NVDA folders such as global plugins directly, and you certainly shouldn't need to, unless the package you are trying to install has not been updated to the new addon format yet. In that case, though, I'm not sure I would want to use such an old thing myself.Lukas

Re: What is the best IOs file management software?

On my computer, I have moved the main iTunes folder to my D partition which I use for most data I can fit on there. This option is located in the iTunes preferences dialog, the appropriate tab is most likely called library. If you don't want to move it anywhere, you should at least be able to see its full path there. So, after you locate or move the folder this way, you should find a tones subfolder in there. I've checked it just now.Lukas

Re: What is the best IOs file management software?

I've once worked around the 40 seconds ringtone limit, although I yet have to see if I'm gonna succeed another time.1. Google a Windows app called Iringer and create your ringtone with it.2. Choose where to save it. It will contain the entire song or audio file you used, but in the m4r format.3. Allow Iringer to automatically open iTunes after this.4. The ringtone should immediately be imported and you should even allow it to be synced to your iPhone. It will get truncated to fit the limit but this is an important step. If you tried the next step without the initial synchronization, it would most likely fail.5. After this has been done, close iTunes, locate the directory where your iTunes library is stored, and here find the subfolder with ringtones. I can't remember its exact name off the top of my head but it should be obvious enough, I found it when I tried this, so what.6. Now, replace the m4r file of your ringtone which
is found here with the original, unabridged version created and saved by Iringer before the ringtone was imported to iTunes and synced to your iPhone.7. On the next synchronization with your phone, the ringtone in its entire length should now get uploaded to the device. The point is that since iTunes has already imported, checked and synced the first, truncated version of the ringtone all right, it shouldn't check its length any more on any subsequent sync.Hope this helps and actually works,Lukas

By the way, you might want to know that the next branch of the NVDA development snapshots already includes a fix for the UAC dialogs not being read bug. It's apparently going to appear in the 2016.3 release. As far as I know, this currently makes NVDA the only screen reader that was already able to adapt to this change so quickly, whatever it is that MS changed about UAC so drastically in the aniversary update.Lukas

Re: Looking for an accessible CMS

2016-05-24 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : lukas via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Looking for an accessible CMS

I know this might not be ideal for your purposes as any non-standard custom functionality requires a bit of a learning curve, and this particular CMS tries to be as lightweight as possible by design, so it lacks some of the more advanced features of the better known mainstream CMS's, but I've developed a website with CMS Made Simple (cmsmadesimple.org) pretty quickly and easily. This website uses a contact form, an automatically updating copyright notice, a dynamic news page where you can filter the news to display only entries from a particular category (general, social events, site updates, etc), it has a built-in search module, the capability to print the current page directly or to share it via e-mail or on Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus, and a custom made photo gallery with alt descriptions. The things I had to do from scratch were the contact form and the gallery. There is a third party plugin called Form Builder available for this CMS which is also p
retty accessible and advanced but it just didn't suit my needs. I wanted modern HTML5 elements with ARIA alerts in the form, which would be a pain to set up with the way the plugin is designed, as well as additional server-side validation in PHP in case the user either disables or works around the _javascript_ in their client, plus very primitive custom logging about sent messages that is stored on the server. All of this was written in pure HTML5, _javascript_ and PHP manually. It's very easy to insert custom pieces of PHP code, which are called tags in this CMS.The news, search and printing modules are preincluded in the CMS core, so they only needed a bit of customization, there is an easily available RSS module in the central plugin repository which is reachable from within the admin pannel, and it's pretty easy and flexible to create your site template and CSS skin. Unfortunately, the site is in Czech only, so it would probably be useless for you to take a loo
k at it.The only other CMS I've had any previous experience with is WordPress but I just didn't like that one all that much. It tends to be slow and bulky, not to mention that it gets targeted with various hacks and attacks pretty much all the time because of how widely used and popular it is, and because of its relative feature complexity, it can sometimes become unnecessarily tedious to set up something small and simple through its admin interface.Through customizing the CMS's internal config.php as well as the standard .htaccess file, you can achieve quite a lot of relatively advanced stuff, such as having the admin pannel and the contact form automatically use SSL as long as HTTPS is enabled for your webhosting, etc.So, although my tip might not be what you are looking for, it's unfortunately the only recommendation I can provide so far. :-DHope this helps,Lukas

Re: Any advice on cane problems?

Hi,I havent experienced this. Either the terrain in the Czech Republic is generally less destructive to canes even in Winter, or I walk less often, or I move the cane more gently and lightly. It might also be possible that the cane manufacturers in your country use different materials and a different production process so that the canes last less. Not intentionally or by design I mean, rather I am suggesting an unfortunate coincidence. :-) Our canes are definitely sturdy and long-lasting while being lightweight and very easy to use at the same time. Other than that, I really dont know. I havent even heard complaints like this from my friends, either. I can usually keep a cane for a year or two, maybe even longer, not sure about that but I certainly have like two replacement canes I purchased some time ago and havent touched either of them for ages.Lukas

Piwik seriously lagging

2015-04-12 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : lukas via Audiogames-reflector

Piwik seriously lagging

Hi all, does anyone have personal experience with the Piwik web analytics platform?Recently I installed it on my domain as well as the domain of my girlfriends blog, as we both use the same local shared webhosting service. We use PHP 5.6.5 with 128 mb memory limit, max execution time of 90 seconds, I believe, and a maximum of 5 simultaneously running PHP processes. I dont know too much about the MySQL part, except that there is no limit to the size or count of the databases you use, as long as their total size doesnt exceed 1 gb, and that a recent version of MySQL is used and that the database can be accessed either through the MySQL, MySQLI or PdO adapters.Yeah, and the webhosting also runs 100% on SSD drives. Both of us also use the same Firefox browser, the latest stable version with merely a few enabled addons such as web Visum, Flash or the itunes Application Detector plugin. I also have silverlight, Firebug and iCloud Bookmarks, not
sure about the status of these on her part off the top of my head. Finally, we both use the latest development snapshot of NVDA.The really serious problem which is exactly the same for both of us, except that she uses a different, more resource demanding Sapi 5 voice whereas I use Espeak, is that no matter what I try and how I attempt to configure either Piwik installation, they both lag immensely all the time, so much that it makes further usage of the same already loaded webpage impossible after a while. The lag can get so bad that it may take up to 10 seconds for NVDA to provide any audible feedback to a key press. sometimes it takes less time to reach such a level, sometimes it takeslonger, but in either case I was not able to discover any regular reproduceable pattern in this odd behavior yet.I have tried using both the default PDO database adapter as well as MySQLI, to configure the session save handler to use a database table, I have set every widget where i
t allowed me to do so to display as a simple table, I have disabled many of them including the one that displays visitors in realtime, I have enabled, disabled and reenabled the APC, Eaccelerator and Xcache opcode caches that the webhost provides and makes it possible to configure them, I have created a bootstrap.php that sets the always_populate_raw_post_data directive to -1 with ini_set as the Piwik installer and system check complain about this setting all the time and I cannot modify this option directly in any other way through the webhosts admin interface, I have basically tried every single thing I could think of that could have anything in the slightest to do with the possible cause of the lag, and even a few others that were just pure despair attempts without any rational reason. Still, nothing seems to work. So, has anyone else seen anything like this yet? Any idea what might be causing this? What I find the most strange is that the lag does occur even on the a
dministration and settings pages, where, as far as I understand it, no widgets should be loaded in real-time and no reports should be processed from the database.I have an installation of CMS Made Simple running on my server and her blog runs on Wordpress without any issues whatsoever. We do have the hourly archiving web cron configured.Ill be happy to provide further details if you need them. Many thanks for any possible answers in advance!Lukas
