Greg, did you try plugging the SB wall wart into a power conditioner?
This made a significant difference in SQ. Next get a Bolder modded
Elpac. There are only a few elpacs left and Bolder is raising it's mod
 price from 85.00 to 100.00 on Nov.1.
You can order the mod before you buy the elpac. When you buy the elpac
have them ship it directly to Bolder to save shipping costs.

Thanks for the suggestions. No, I haven't tried anything with the SB3
yet. Being a bit of a DIYer, I am planning to build my own PSU, just in
the research and planning stage at the moment. I have been followng the
Bolder/RWA/Sqeezebox PSU threads on all the forums I can find.

A power conditioner is probably worth looking at for my hifi in
general, not just for the SB3.

I've always found Rotel gear to offer excellent value for money and very
neutral, un-coloured sound. I'd have a listen to see if it suits you
but I think they're often as good or better than many much more
'premium' marques at a substantially lower cost.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter into poweramp?

2006-10-29 Thread ceejay

The volume control is digital, though (as per many other threads here!)
you can use a decent range on it before you'll notice any quality
change.

The issue is more about protecting your amp and speakers from any
accidental surge - remember the transporter is entirely controlled by
software! You have to assume that at some point your transporter is
going to find itself at max output, and if that level will blow your
speakers, you need to get some attentuation into the chain.

Another vote for the Constantine (or the USB Plus Constantine).

The build quality, and the sound, of the Mhdt Labs DAC units is
absolutely fantastic. The open areas of the DAC (on each side) are
actually very narrow, no dust getting in there at all. Delivery from
Taiwan to U.S. (my door) was only 2 days! They package the product
extremely well for shipping.

These are hand-made DAC units, and they are in my opinion one of the
very best buys in audio right now.

I recently invested in a 12V lead acid battery - completely sealed so
'clean' for a domestic environment, purchased a DC-DC regulator and am
VERY happy with the result. How did it affect the music - In every way
an AC supply cannot. Take my advice and look at battery solutions. You
only use them when you are really listening, so the longevity of the
supply isn't important. I have a 7 Amp Hour battery which keeps going
for about 6 hours fully charged - I lose battery energy from the heat
sink on my supply pack, so I don't get the rated performance from the
battery. My solution uses the ubiquitous LM317 regulator - does a great
job. Ask me about it anytime. Cheers

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Trasporter display configuration - done much?

Has anyone tried messing about with the display configuration for the
Trasporter? I ask as I have spent a good deal of time trying to achieve
a certain set up for the displays and am finding it all a bit difficult
and confusing. I'm using Michael Herger's great MusicInfo plugin.
I'm interested to know if anyone else has tried messing about in depth
with the display settings and what their experience has been (i.e. am i
just a bit thick!).
I've been posting about it on the third party plugin forum:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29084
It's only at the end of the thread where I make up my mind what I
really want to achieve though.
Thanks for any input.

yes, I did.

If he had said in my opinion or I can't hear a difference but maybe
others can I would have had a different response.
I have a lifetime of ear training, that is not ego, it is just fact.
BTW, I got it right 10 out of 10,
My recording engineer friend got it right 9 out of
10.that was enough for me.
I don't know why it sounds better and (not being an audio designer I
don't need to know), but it does sound better.
Stock PS in wall = hash, grain and harshness in high frequencies
Stock PS in a power conditioner= significantly cleaner, sweeter
highs,better soundstage

Modded Elpac in Power cond.= Another significant improvement in highs,
soundstage etc.

The differences with each change were not subtle.
I don't know why the elpac sounds better, and I don't care.

Again it was Tyler who was rude, not me.

I didn't say his opinion was idiotic, I said his statement was idiotic

observable phenomena and doesn't de facto rule out a possibility.

To assume the difference is in one's head is as much a mistake as to
assume the difference is in the gear. Hence the blind test.

Exactly -- they are clearly marked and it is easy to do. You just need
a 1/16th hex wrench. They're right in front of the RCA outputs.
You'll notice the markings (-30, -20, -10, 0) for L and R. At O, you
will find a plastic coated jumper on each side. Just move those to
-30, see how that works, and then back off from there.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB3 into TacT - how good can it get?

2006-10-29 Thread P Floding

I'd just like to give an update on the progress on these tweaks.

I eliminated one of the two analogue grounding interconnects, since I
figured nothing good could come from having more ground loops.

Generally I needed to move the connector often to maintain the improved
sound quality. The lazier I got, the less fantastic the sound became.

Today I decided to try contact treatment in the form of SST (silver
stuff). It is probably not for everyone, since potentially at some time
in the future I might have to remove the silver paste (at least that's
what some people claim).

Anyway, I treated ground sleve and signal pin on the digital
interconnect (coax) and the ground sleve on the extra grounding
interconnect.

Result?

I can confidently say that this is by far the best sound I have ever
heard. Even better than before.

A strict A/B test might be almost useless (even if it could be done),
since I now listen about 5 to 10 dB louder than before! It is worrying
to see the preamps volume readout, but it sure sounds fantastic!

I feel very confident now that I've been listening to large proportions
of downconverted cr*p (HF) before (at least that is the only feasible
explanation I can think of at the moment). YMMV, but I haven't heard
any CD playback system that approaches the sound I have at the moment.

As before my preamp is a TacT RCS 2.2x with room correction in use. It
also has a power supply upgrade by Aberdeen, and some internal contact
treatment tweaks by myself.

As before my preamp is a TacT RCS 2.2x with room correction in use. It
also has a power supply upgrade by Aberdeen, and some internal contact
 treatment tweaks by myself.

Try the Aberdeen Northstar transport and forget about the SB.

are currently running the following:
1. All unused analog RCA inputs on the TACT shorted with shorting

2. Digital coax from the SB to the TACT and treated with SS.
3. One RCA interconnect running from the analog output of the SB to one

I use an Aberdeen modified TACT TCSMKII, RCS2.2.XP and BOZ 216/2220s in
my HT and 2.2 setups. I use an Aberdeen modified North Star transport
and Transporter in my 2.2 setup. Personally, I feel that the North
Star transport is the best redbook transport for the TACT units. I
moved my Esoteric D-03/P-03 to my headphone setup after hearing the
North Star in my TACT system. While I feel that the Transporter is an
excellent piece that I happily use for 90% of my listening, the North
Star via AES and w/ upsampling on, achieves perfect transparency and
adds a smoothness to the TACT setup that I have yet to hear w/ any
other transport.

I and other Tact owners think the sample rate converter in the TacT
equipment has audible problems with non-integral conversions.

The TacT gear works internally at 96kHz, so feeding it 48kHz, 96kHz, or
192kHz sounds better than feeding it 44.1kHz.

Have you tried using Adobe Audition (30-day free trial if you don't
have it already) and using it to upsample a CD track to say 96kHz/24
bit (the maximum the Transporter will handle) and then comparing that
track played through the Transporter with playback through the North
Star?

I have used Audition to upsample all my 44.1kHz files to 48kHz for
playback through the SB3 to my RCS 2.2X. Granted, it's not as
convenient to upsample with Audition as it is in the North Star, but it
only needs to be done once.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Question for phono audiophiles

2006-10-29 Thread nicketynick

This question is sort of off-topic, but I'm pretty sure some kind person
here will answer the question :)
I'm busy digitizing my LP's (slow.) - my nephew (who of course has
never even seen one before) was nice enough to drop the needle right on
the platter for me - toast! It's a JVC JL-F30 turntable, with an ADC
brand cartridge with a slip-on stylus - QLM 33 MKIII. So I went and got
an Ortofon OM5E cartridge; I've seen good reviews, etc. Well, first
thing I noticed is I don't seem to have the same dynamic range when I
look at my recorded waveforms - ie. the loud bits aren't as much louder
than the silences as with the old needle. I put the same song
side-by-side, there seems to be about a 15db difference. Does this make
sense? Am I going to regret doing the rest of the albums with the
Ortofon cartridge? Any tips?
Thanks!

Please see Sleestack's feedback on the Aberdeen NorthStar. He's tried

This may be a dumb question, but I don't want to assume anything:

Did you set your record levels to similar points with both carts?

As pfarrell pointed out, carts can vary significantly in sensitivity.
If you left your record levels at the same point with the new cart you
may simply be recording at too low a level.

I think I'm probably OK from a S/N consideration - I've noticed that

Are you recording at 24 bits or 16?

You might want to take a quick look at
http://www.pfarrell.com/prc/bits.html

Look carefully at the lead-in or lead-out sections between tracks.
It should be all noise. If it is also 15 dB down, you have
sufficient headroom.

Of interest to this discussion is we say that twice as loud, or one
more bit of data, is a tad over 6.02 dB

so your 15 dB is two and a half bits. Out of 16, that is a fairly high
percentage, but out of 24 it is no big deal.

I'm kind of winging it here - I just don't want to find out later that
I should have done something differently, because then I'll be tempted
to do it all over again! (and I'm already getting trouble for spending
so much time on this little project!)

Converting LPs takes tons of time, far more than people expect. And for
me, it takes far more time than the $10 that most of my pop LPs cost as
CDs. But some of my folk and jazz LPs are out of print and important to
me, so they are worth the time.

For me, while I have both Cool Edit (now called Adobe Audition ) and
Sonar, and lots of plug-ins from my recording studio, I do not use any
noise reduction on converted LPs. All of the noise plug-ins have audible
artifacts, so I just live with the occasional pop. My LPs were well
kept, I had audiophile turntables (at least at the time they were) for
years before I went over to the dark side with CDs.

2006-10-29 Thread El Duderino

Thanks to all of you for the varied suggestions.

I also appreciate the varied opinions and the attempts to qualify
these. However, this thread doesn't need to deteriorate into an
argument between those who believe that modded power supplies make all
the difference and those who do not. All opinions are valued!

The only way of definitively answering whether or not there is any
difference between power supplies is to conduct a randomized, double
blind test with multiple participants, all following the same testing
protocol. Obviously, this is difficult from a logistical point of view
and, consequently, we have to rely on limited tests.

So unless a group of people conduct a randomized test, these
arguments/discussions aren't going to be resolved anytime soon. My
suggestion is that we keep providing opinions, backed up with as much
evidence as possible. In that way, individuals can make decisions
based on the best possible info. I, for one, plan on picking up a
modded Elpac in the near future, not because I am convinced that it
will make a difference but because I would like to confirm that it does
not.

trigger, no one would think it is true. No one would test the idea.
No one would even suggest testing it (although there are some bruised
egos that may suggest that I test it and get back to them with the
results!).

It is pointless to labor this any further. As I said in the first
post, if you are a believer, you will hear a difference, and if you
aren't you won't. There's no need to get upset about it. It is human
nature and it applies to you even if you think it doesn't.

No one's mind will be changed by any of this. If you say that a stop
sign is red and the person you are talking to says no it isn't, what
more can you say and what is the point in continuing the dialog? It is
like trying to convince a child that he shouldn't eat candy because it
 isn't healthy.

here is my problem with your post: you are stating that the only
difference is in the ear of the beholder. I don't think you can prove
that. How do you account for 2 people identifying the difference blind
with such accuracy, one, a recording engineer, the other a musician.
The differences were that obvious.
I have failed other blind tests where I thought there were subtle
differences, the most recent being digital cable. That would not cause
me to say there are no differences in cables but I feel I can say I
couldn't hear a difference in those particular cables and that leds me
to be very skeptical about digital cables. I'm glad I don't hear a
difference, it saves me money.

Or my thread on TP burn in. I was open to all sides of that debate. I
still think my TP is improving with time but I am completely open to
the idea that it's me, not the TP. In the next few weeks I might have a
new, in the box TP here to AB for the fun of it. I will have some people
over to blind AB. I have no problem if I fail that test saying that the
burn in effect was in my mind. But if I and others pass the test I will
feel pretty secure in saying there is a burn in effect for the TP.
Seems reasonable to me.Does that sound reasonable to you?

Atheism is as much an act of faith as Theism. One can neither prove nor
disprove the existence of a deity.
The only purely rational viewpoint is agnosticismOnecannot
rationally know, therefore One neither denies nor affirms the existence
of a deity (Camus, Myth of Sisyphus)
This is not to dis theists or atheists, many consider an act of faith a
beautiful thing.
However I have no interest in acts of faith in audio.

So for fun, how about this analogy:

Atheists =Objectivists

Theists =Subjectivists

Agnostics = Unitarians :-)

BTW my ego is not bruised and I really, I mean, really don't want want
you to the gun test, not even blind, or blinfolded as the case may be.
