Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter and balanced headphone
Doing a quick search revealed this: http://headwize.com/ubb/infoshowpage.php?srchcat=faqamptid=35 Based on my experience with a DIY headphone amp, I preferred the hd650's driven with a low output impedance. My design initially had a 120 Ohm output resistor, but I removed it giving me slightly cleaner, faster bass, but not much effect on frequency response (that I noticed). However, my cheaper beverdynamic headphones did seem to have a preferable frequence response with the output resistor in place. [Note, I also used RMAA to back up my listening experience (or was it the other war around?) with the sennheisers and found reduced distortion in the low frequences with the output resistor removed] -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28236 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

BTW, another manufacturer in the British/BBC monitor tradition worth considering is PMC - many of their models are sold to both pro and consumer markets. That's certainly an option I'm considering. It's a little harder than that though as I would need to borrow a suitable amplifier too. If I order the dynaudios I think I would give them a fair chance in my room, and only if I'm not satisfied see if I can take them to a dealer or borrow some speakers and an amp from a dealer. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3
DACs definately do not sound the same, and the transporter should be significantlty better than what you currently have. However, you should be aware that the differences between DACs can actually be quite subtle and something you tend to notice more over a period of time rather than something that jumps out at you immediatly. If there is a striking difference, then it is likely that one of them is doing something wrong. In my opinion though, a better source is definatly worth persuing, as although the differences can be much more subtle than something like a change in speakers, over time they seem to be just as, if not more important, in creating an enjoyable sound. -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58311 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Advice on pro studio monitor vs consumer hifi amp + speakers
Well there are some interesting links at the bottom of this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_monitor Particularly the sound on sound comparison from which I conclude that the design goals are essentially the same but consumer speakers do relatively better because they are updated more frequently. This would still appear to apply to more upto date speakers. From what I can tell, the Dynaudio BM 6A mk II speakers I was looking at are based on an older design than the newly introduced excite series, which may put them at a disadvantage. However, with active speakers there is definatly an engineering advantage. Firstly having an active crossover seems like it should be a significant electrical advantage, while removing the passive crossover and the amplifier casing and packaging should prove to be cost advantages. In the case of the BM 6A mk II, it would also appear dynaudio have taken the opportunity to extend the bass response by 3db by having 2x the amp power for the woofer than the tweeter. I really would love to have the opportunity to listen to some studio monitors and consumer gear in the same room so I could make my own mind up, but I can't see an easy way to do that... -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58179 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I'd be interested to hear how they sound when you get them home. I recently had a short demo and was impressed by the frequency range they produced, but could not evaluate them properly as the store only carried BW speakers and had them hooked up to a dvd player and surround processor which I'm sure were killing a lot of the hifi sound. When you set them up, make sure you experiment with the supplied bass port bungs to help remove any room resonances you have. I assume you went with the RB-1072. Were you able to compare it to any other amps in the same store? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter - Volume Problems With Amps
You should be able to run the transporter set to max volume. This should then provide a similar output level to that of a standard cd player. Things to check - you are going from rca outputs on the transporter to rca inputs on your amp. Or balanced output to balanced input. Not rca - balanced or balanced to rca. The input on your amp is a line level input, not a phono (or record player) input. On the transporter software side, the volume should be set to max, and volume attenuation is not set in slimserver. Don't worry about what the VU meters on the transporter show. But do worry if you amp has VU meters that are showing clipping. -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34148 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Adding resistance (or impedance) between the psu and the load (ie squeezebox) is bad because it means the the voltage seen by the load will vary with the current it draws creating voltage noise. (As the current draw changes, so will the voltage drop across any impedance between psu and load) If the psu was directly powering some audio circuitry, one would typically try to eliminate as much impedance as possible. err, which contacts? Plugs that are plated shouldn't need cleaning, bare speaker wire will oxidise over time, but rather than clean it, you can cut the end off and re-strip it. To me, adding a linear psu made no difference, although adding a DAC (albeit one quite a bit more expensive than the one you're looking at) made a nice improvement. My experience with DAC's are that the effect is subtle, unlike an amp, or speakers, but over a relaxed listening session, the improvement is very worthwhile. i.e. it is hard to notice a difference with quick AB's, but if you listen to an album with one dac, and then switch to another, the difference becomes much more apparent. -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30552 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: TP changes with break in
IMHO, some warm up time is necessary for electronic components to be at their best, and I'm willing to believe (although I havn't seen any tests) that capacitors may improve in performance slightly with some use. However, after that they are likely to slowly degrade (especially electrolytics). I guess the need to recalibrate sensitive electronic instruments could be given as evidence to the fact that performance of electronic components can change with time. However my take is that the biggest contributor to break in of audio electronics is actually the human brain. As you become more attuned to the sound of a component, you brain will be better at regonising its sonic 'signature', which will improve your ability to distinguish it from other components, and also learn to better compensate for any distortion. This could be compared to listening to someone with an unfamiliar accent, when you first hear them, you may struggle to understand even simple phrases, but after some time you will adapt, and be able to understand not just the words, but also the emotion conveyed by the tone of voice. Speakers and other mechanical objects are a competely different matter however. Whilst the 'brain compensation' also has a strong effect here, the physical properties will change over time. The most evident of this is the gradual softening of the rubber surrond on a speaker, which (to me) seems to improve bass resonse and clarity over time. -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29025 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter DAC fed by DVD Issues?
OK, here is my understanding of the situation: Technically, the performance of the transporter alone should be superior to a transport driving the transporter, as the extra step will most likely add jitter. The transporter can act as a two channel DAC, so, if you setup your dvd player to output linear PCM from its digital output, then the transporter will be able to play back any cd's and dvd's as two channel stereo. If you have a seperate n-channel decoder for surround sound, then there are two possibilities. 1. connect one digital output from dvd player to transporter, connect the other from dvd player to decoder. 2. connect things digtally in a chain dvd-transporter-decoder. In that case, I am unsure as to whether the transporter will pass through the digital signal unmodifies, but I'm assuming it should do. -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28533 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

After some experimentation, and hunting around, I added a Cyrus DAC-X to my setup, justifying the cost, as I can also run tv and dvd sound through it. Does the power amp (without volume control) have an input level adjust? If not I'd suggest using a passive volume control. This could be as simple as a (switchable) attenuator. The reason for this is that if there is no attenuation between the sb and the power amp you risk blowing your speakers if a user, software or hardware error causes a full volume output from the DAC. The cheap / simple and most likely very close to best audio quality solution would be to make up an rca lead with an attenuator in the poweramp end. The attenuation should be set such that maximum sb volume results in the highest level you ever want to listen at (which should be within the power handling abilities of the amp+speakers). -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21617 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If I ever move things, I'll only disconnect it at the amp end. I also used a socket to gently twist the binding posts beyond finger tight to make as good a connection as possible. No idea if it helped the sound or not, but its one less thing to worry about. -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21462 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Well, you could spend anything up to £1000 or more on a DAC, and it would most likely make a difference. The rest of my system totals less than yours and I ended up settling on the cyrus DAC-X some time after listening to the MF X-DAC V3 on its own. The main reason I went for the cyrus is its switchable inputs and relative insensitivity to the source compared to other things I tried. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Need volume control advice
The CD and line level inputs should be identical electrically. (CD is a line level source). In your setup, theoretically the best sound quality will be obtained with the squeezebox volume set to max. Once you reduce the volume by 6dB or so, you will start to lose dynamic range coming out of your DAC. However, your amp and speakers dynamic range will also reduce with reduced volume, which will mask this effect. Given The amp actually has separate volume control for both left and right, so it's kind of a pain in the ass to volume-match correctly I would adjust the amp volume once so that maximum squeezebox volume is equal to maximum normal listening volume, and then use the squeezebox to adjust volume on a day to day basis. If you plan to have a party or something, then you can re-adjust the volume on your amp for the occaision. -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18863 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I beleive the reason electrical coax spdif is often said to be better than optical toslink spdif is due to the relativly low bandwidth of the toslink transmitter and receiver. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB-3 and external DAC
IMO current DAC's will be redundant in 5 years, not because of better DAC's, but because of digital amplifiers. Squeezebox will most likely have an (optional) integrated digital amp. Digital amps will also have HDMI inputs, which will support copy protection (HDCP I think they're calling it). As for frequency response of CD's, the problem of limiting them to 44kHz sample rates is the extreme filtering required to remove artifacts above 20kHz. Oversampling does this filtering in the digital domain. Upsampling (per my understanding) allows some artifacts through. e.g. 44kHz upsampled to 96kHz will create artifacts in the 20-40kHz region. It will then be oversampled to get rid of the higher frequency artifacts. This may sound better for the following reasons - firstly, it moves the harsh filtering futher away from the audible region, secondly, the artifacts approximate energy that was originally there, and whilst we can't hear this directly, it may affect our perception of sound below 20kHz. EDIT: probably more importantly than either of the above 2 points is that the artifacts introduced by upsampling help to 'even out' errors in the DAC. -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17948 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Jitter, and RFI (electrical interference) are the two areas that should matter. Error-correction will be dependant on what you use to rip the files in the first place, and as long as you're not using damaged cd's this shouldn't be an issue. step. No more hunting around for that album I might have left in the kitchen, no more long interruptions, when I feel like listening to a few tracks off different albums. No more always listening to the same stuff because that's what's out. Hardware configurability seems excellent - the firmware for the cpu can be updated, as can the algorithms that run on the FPGA. Currently the software seems good, but not idiot proof - mostly due to the wireless network setup. Sound quality is very good, and probably (without having tested it against one) matches the sound of a dedicated cd player in the region of £150. The worst bit - ripping all the cds you own. Make sure you do this properly to start with. Set up EAC with FLAC, then do a couple of cds, and test them with the software to make sure the artist, album name, etc is to your liking. Only then take the time to work your way through your entire collection. Keep the log files, so if any of your cds have any problems reading, you'll at least know which one's aren't quite bit perfect. Ideally then back up the whole lot onto another hdd in another machine.
