Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Converting Linn 96hz to a playable rate

2009-02-04 Thread bludragon

Now that you've solved it, is there a reason you need to do this now? I
just installed the latest slimserver (squeezecenter) last night and it
re-codes flac 24/96 to flac 24/48 on the fly perfectly.

FYI, the latest slimserver added support for resampling on the fly.

FYI, the latest slimserver added support for resampling on the fly.

In foobar, you need to select PHSS and click on configure selected in
the Active DSP pane to change the sample rate.

As for the error, I just tried it, and I get the same thing *if* I have
the DSP boxed ticked. It works with convert to WAV though...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter and balanced headphone

2009-01-30 Thread bludragon

Doing a quick search revealed this:

http://headwize.com/ubb/infoshowpage.php?srchcat=faqamptid=35

Based on my experience with a DIY headphone amp, I preferred the
hd650's driven with a low output impedance. My design initially had a
120 Ohm output resistor, but I removed it giving me slightly cleaner,
faster bass, but not much effect on frequency response (that I
noticed). However, my cheaper beverdynamic headphones did seem to have
a preferable frequence response with the output resistor in place.

[Note, I also used RMAA to back up my listening experience (or was it
the other war around?) with the sennheisers and found reduced
distortion in the low frequences with the output resistor removed]

As an update to this I found some nice looking used speakers on

when they do, I won't be in a position to compare them to similarly

I also came across this review:

The reviewer seems very impressed, and those speakers would certainly
make a very neat solution when paired with a squeezebox.

did have to pick up the tab for the return postage of the Dynaudios,

That's certainly an option I'm considering. It's a little harder than
that though as I would need to borrow a suitable amplifier too. If I
order the dynaudios I think I would give them a fair chance in my room,
and only if I'm not satisfied see if I can take them to a dealer or
borrow some speakers and an amp from a dealer.

I did listen to some PMC GB1's a couple of years ago in comparison to
some similarly priced spendors and also some pro-ac speakers. I really
liked both the PMC and pro-ac speakers at the time but decided to
upgrade my source instead. If I could find a local dealer with either
of those in stock I would be seriously tempted to up my budget and go
for them, but I'm struggling a little as I'm now located in the US.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3

2009-01-16 Thread bludragon

DACs definately do not sound the same, and the transporter should be
significantlty better than what you currently have. However, you
should be aware that the differences between DACs can actually be quite
subtle and something you tend to notice more over a period of time
rather than something that jumps out at you immediatly. If there is a
striking difference, then it is likely that one of them is doing
something wrong. In my opinion though, a better source is definatly
worth persuing, as although the differences can be much more subtle
than something like a change in speakers, over time they seem to be
just as, if not more important, in creating an enjoyable sound.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Advice on pro studio monitor vs consumer hifi amp + speakers

2009-01-15 Thread bludragon

Well there are some interesting links at the bottom of this page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_monitor

Particularly the sound on sound comparison from which I conclude that
the design goals are essentially the same but consumer speakers do
relatively better because they are updated more frequently.

This would still appear to apply to more upto date speakers. From what
I can tell, the Dynaudio BM 6A mk II speakers I was looking at are based
on an older design than the newly introduced excite series, which may
put them at a disadvantage. However, with active speakers there is
definatly an engineering advantage. Firstly having an active crossover
seems like it should be a significant electrical advantage, while
removing the passive crossover and the amplifier casing and packaging
should prove to be cost advantages. In the case of the BM 6A mk II, it
would also appear dynaudio have taken the opportunity to extend the bass
response by 3db by having 2x the amp power for the woofer than the
tweeter.

I really would love to have the opportunity to listen to some studio
monitors and consumer gear in the same room so I could make my own mind
up, but I can't see an easy way to do that...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Bw 683?

2009-01-13 Thread bludragon

I'd be interested to hear how they sound when you get them home. I
recently had a short demo and was impressed by the frequency range they
produced, but could not evaluate them properly as the store only carried
BW speakers and had them hooked up to a dvd player and surround
processor which I'm sure were killing a lot of the hifi sound.

When you set them up, make sure you experiment with the supplied bass
port bungs to help remove any room resonances you have.

I assume you went with the RB-1072. Were you able to compare it to any
other amps in the same store? Again, my local bw dealer only carries
rotel, so it is not easy for me to compare vs other amps, but I am
considering going back with my dac and hooking it up direct to both an
analog and digital rotal power amp.

to buy the DAC as the SB on its own just didn't sounds as good as my

One extra benefit of the DAC was that I can use it with TV and DVD's

For those who like to browse physical CD's, there's nothing stopping

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter - Volume Problems With Amps

2007-04-03 Thread bludragon

You should be able to run the transporter set to max volume. This
should then provide a similar output level to that of a standard cd
player.

Things to check - you are going from rca outputs on the transporter to
rca inputs on your amp. Or balanced output to balanced input. Not rca
- balanced or balanced to rca.

The input on your amp is a line level input, not a phono (or record
player) input.

On the transporter software side, the volume should be set to max, and
volume attenuation is not set in slimserver.

Don't worry about what the VU meters on the transporter show. But do
worry if you amp has VU meters that are showing clipping.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: plug-and-play linear PS (part one)

2007-01-23 Thread bludragon

Adding resistance (or impedance) between the psu and the load (ie
squeezebox) is bad because it means the the voltage seen by the load
will vary with the current it draws creating voltage noise. (As the
current draw changes, so will the voltage drop across any impedance
between psu and load)

If the psu was directly powering some audio circuitry, one would
typically try to eliminate as much impedance as possible. However, in
this case, the squeezebox has an internal psu, which imho will do a
good job of removing any noise on the external power input.

2006-12-15 Thread bludragon

err, which contacts? Plugs that are plated shouldn't need cleaning,
bare speaker wire will oxidise over time, but rather than clean it, you
can cut the end off and re-strip it. To me, adding a linear psu made no
difference, although adding a DAC (albeit one quite a bit more expensive
than the one you're looking at) made a nice improvement. My experience
with DAC's are that the effect is subtle, unlike an amp, or speakers,
but over a relaxed listening session, the improvement is very
worthwhile. i.e. it is hard to notice a difference with quick AB's,
but if you listen to an album with one dac, and then switch to another,
the difference becomes much more apparent.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: TP changes with break in

2006-10-31 Thread bludragon

IMHO, some warm up time is necessary for electronic components to be at
their best, and I'm willing to believe (although I havn't seen any
tests) that capacitors may improve in performance slightly with some
use. However, after that they are likely to slowly degrade (especially
electrolytics). I guess the need to recalibrate sensitive electronic
instruments could be given as evidence to the fact that performance of
electronic components can change with time.

However my take is that the biggest contributor to break in of audio
electronics is actually the human brain. As you become more attuned
to the sound of a component, you brain will be better at regonising its
sonic 'signature', which will improve your ability to distinguish it
from other components, and also learn to better compensate for any
distortion.

This could be compared to listening to someone with an unfamiliar
accent, when you first hear them, you may struggle to understand even
simple phrases, but after some time you will adapt, and be able to
understand not just the words, but also the emotion conveyed by the
tone of voice.

Speakers and other mechanical objects are a competely different matter
however. Whilst the 'brain compensation' also has a strong effect
here, the physical properties will change over time. The most evident
of this is the gradual softening of the rubber surrond on a speaker,
which (to me) seems to improve bass resonse and clarity over time.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter DAC fed by DVD Issues?

2006-10-11 Thread bludragon

OK, here is my understanding of the situation:

Technically, the performance of the transporter alone should be
superior to a transport driving the transporter, as the extra step will
most likely add jitter.

The transporter can act as a two channel DAC, so, if you setup your dvd
player to output linear PCM from its digital output, then the
transporter will be able to play back any cd's and dvd's as two channel
stereo.

If you have a seperate n-channel decoder for surround sound, then there
are two possibilities.

1. connect one digital output from dvd player to transporter, connect
the other from dvd player to decoder.

2. connect things digtally in a chain dvd-transporter-decoder. In
that case, I am unsure as to whether the transporter will pass through
the digital signal unmodifies, but I'm assuming it should do.

It would also be nice if it did as much electrical isolation as

Actually, given the number of digital inputs it has, it could already
fulfill my needs (1 toslink + 2 rca, the 2nd rca provided via an rca to

horrible levels of jitter and electrical noise my stb and dvd player

I would say, either save and wait for the Transporter, or find an

together, but I'm not sure if you could get to audition it, or if it
fits your budget. A DAC however, you could audition, although I found
it took a couple of days at home to make a proper judgement. Depending
on which DAC you get, there may be little benefit to improving the
digital source.

After some experimentation, and hunting around, I added a Cyrus DAC-X
to my setup, justifying the cost, as I can also run tv and dvd sound
through it. With that, differences in digital source are almost
indestinguishable.

Stock my SB would not better my £270 NAD cd player. I upgraded my SB

money though:

see my comments on this. In my experience power supply and cable
tweaks will not gain you enough to make a difference. You will need an
external DAC to match the NAD cd player. As for the levels, the NAD is
outputting at 2.2 V, which is at the upper limit of the spec, as making
it louder is an advantage during auditions. The squeezebox is probably
set the the more correct 2V peak output.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: volume control question - digital or analogue?

2006-03-01 Thread bludragon

Does the power amp (without volume control) have an input level adjust?
If not I'd suggest using a passive volume control. This could be as
simple as a (switchable) attenuator.

The reason for this is that if there is no attenuation between the sb
and the power amp you risk blowing your speakers if a user, software or
hardware error causes a full volume output from the DAC.

The cheap / simple and most likely very close to best audio quality
solution would be to make up an rca lead with an attenuator in the
poweramp end. The attenuation should be set such that maximum sb
volume results in the highest level you ever want to listen at (which
should be within the power handling abilities of the amp+speakers).

Spades/bananas are the most convenient. But bare wire should sound the
best, until it oxidises. I've now tinned mine with some silver solder
at the amp end, which comes close to the convenience of spades, and
left them bare at the speaker end. If I ever move things, I'll only
disconnect it at the amp end. I also used a socket to gently twist the
binding posts beyond finger tight to make as good a connection as
possible.

No idea if it helped the sound or not, but its one less thing to worry

Well, you could spend anything up to £1000 or more on a DAC, and it
would most likely make a difference. The rest of my system totals less
than yours and I ended up settling on the cyrus DAC-X some time after
listening to the MF X-DAC V3 on its own. The main reason I went for
the cyrus is its switchable inputs and relative insensitivity to the
source compared to other things I tried.

If I hadn't wanted switchable inputs I would most likely have gone for
one of the chinese DAC's, e.g.

and I still wonder if I should have taken that route, and combined it
with a DIY input selector - could have even incorperated upsampling.

possibility of synchronisation errors. There should be no difficulty
if latency is not a concern, and for a music server it isn't. For
films it is of some concern, for recording, mixing, dj'ing etc it is a
real concern.

$1750 seems a serious amount of money for such a device. Going off
what's inside it, it should be possible to buy a technically better
solution for much less than that.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Need volume control advice

2005-12-07 Thread bludragon

The CD and line level inputs should be identical electrically. (CD is a
line level source).

In your setup, theoretically the best sound quality will be obtained
with the squeezebox volume set to max. Once you reduce the volume by
6dB or so, you will start to lose dynamic range coming out of your DAC.
However, your amp and speakers dynamic range will also reduce with
reduced volume, which will mask this effect.

Given The amp actually has separate volume control for both left and
right, so it's kind of a pain in the ass to volume-match correctly

I would adjust the amp volume once so that maximum squeezebox volume is
equal to maximum normal listening volume, and then use the squeezebox to
adjust volume on a day to day basis. If you plan to have a party or
something, then you can re-adjust the volume on your amp for the
occaision.

I beleive the reason electrical coax spdif is often said to be better
than optical toslink spdif is due to the relativly low bandwidth of the
toslink transmitter and receiver. They were originally specced to have
enough bandwidth to support spdif data rates, however, the relativly
low bandwidth headroom can give rise to large amounts of jitter. I
havn't checked how valid this is with current devices.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB-3 and external DAC

2005-11-11 Thread bludragon

IMO current DAC's will be redundant in 5 years, not because of better
DAC's, but because of digital amplifiers. Squeezebox will most likely
have an (optional) integrated digital amp. Digital amps will also have
HDMI inputs, which will support copy protection (HDCP I think they're
calling it).

As for frequency response of CD's, the problem of limiting them to
44kHz sample rates is the extreme filtering required to remove
artifacts above 20kHz. Oversampling does this filtering in the digital
domain. Upsampling (per my understanding) allows some artifacts
through. e.g. 44kHz upsampled to 96kHz will create artifacts in the
20-40kHz region. It will then be oversampled to get rid of the higher
frequency artifacts.

This may sound better for the following reasons - firstly, it moves the
harsh filtering futher away from the audible region, secondly, the
artifacts approximate energy that was originally there, and whilst we
can't hear this directly, it may affect our perception of sound below
20kHz.

EDIT: probably more importantly than either of the above 2 points is
that the artifacts introduced by upsampling help to 'even out' errors
in the DAC.

Jitter, and RFI (electrical interference) are the two areas that should
matter. Error-correction will be dependant on what you use to rip the
files in the first place, and as long as you're not using damaged cd's
this shouldn't be an issue.

Bear in mind that the jitter that matters is located at the end of the
spdif link, and this may be completly different to the level measured
within the transport.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: External DAC?

2005-09-20 Thread bludragon

Thought I'd add my 2c to this discussion.
Had a chance to try a Cyrus Dax-X, and found it to work very well.I
couldn't distinguish between the squeezebox, and a NAD C541 as the
source. This has to be at least partially due to the Cyrus's clock
recovery (I beleive it uses a sample rate converter). Listened through
some BW dm601s2's and an MF X-A2.
Haven't bought the dac-x though (yet), as its damn pricey (£1150), and
it didn't get on so well with my dvd, or freeview.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Initial Squeezebox2 sound impressions vs my luck and a NAD C 541

2005-09-16 Thread bludragon

Julian,

Glad you got it sorted, was just about to mention I tried my coax
digital out into a pc and it worked fine. However, it seems we both
suffered a corruption in the Xilinx CPLD, though mine was completely
dead until I reprogrammed it - no playback whatsoever.

Sithuk,

I did a very quick comparison with the WNA mkII vs the direct headphone
out on the squeezebox. Suffice to say the WNA does improve things.
More clarity, deeper bass. It's audible, but not night and day. If I
were you I'd get the squeezebox first (assuming you're set on one), and
then try to audition a headphone amp with it, even if its not one you
intend to buy, at least you should get an idea of the improvements on
offer. I'd also recommend trying the headphones out before you get
them - at least for fit and comfort if nothing else.

With regards to trying out the digital out - I've just spent around 30
min switching back and forth between the squeezebox line out,
squeezebox digital out into an emu-0404 sound card, and emu-0404 on its
own, and I'm not sure there's any real difference between them.
Actually, I'm now thinking the 0404 driven by the squeezebox has a very
slight edge. My tiredness could be inventing things though... Oh, I
should mention I've bypassed the output caps on the 0404.

Thanks for the feedback. Don't have much time tonight, but I could try
the hd650's via the headphone out on the squeezebox if you want
Sithuk.
One thing worth mentioning about the HD600/650's is that they don't
keep out much background noise, something to beware of if you have a pc
in your listening room - obviously the squeezebox solves this problem.

JulianL, do the analogue outs work ok? I haven't tested my digital
outs, but I have noticed the optical glowing. If I can find the right
adaptor I should be able to test them with my pc. Certainly I'd like
to make sure mine are working for the future!

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Initial Squeezebox2 sound impressions vs my luck and a NAD C 541

2005-09-14 Thread bludragon
 step. No more
hunting around for that album I might have left in the kitchen, no more
long interruptions, when I feel like listening to a few tracks off
different albums. No more always listening to the same stuff because
that's what's out. Hardware configurability seems excellent - the
firmware for the cpu can be updated, as can the algorithms that run on
the FPGA. Currently the software seems good, but not idiot proof -
mostly due to the wireless network setup.

Sound quality is very good, and probably (without having tested it
against one) matches the sound of a dedicated cd player in the region
of £150.

The worst bit - ripping all the cds you own. Make sure you do this
properly to start with. Set up EAC with FLAC, then do a couple of cds,
and test them with the software to make sure the artist, album name, etc
is to your liking. Only then take the time to work your way through
your entire collection. Keep the log files, so if any of your cds have
any problems reading, you'll at least know which one's aren't quite bit
perfect. Ideally then back up the whole lot onto another hdd in
another machine.

The future:

I'm going to upgrade the external psu.
I might modify the box itself - possiblly adding a couple of super
reg's to upgrade the internal psu's.

I really really want to try it with a Cyrus DAC-X (£1000), or an all
digital TACT amp (£2200), and a nice pair of floorstanders
(£700-£1000), but might have to wait until my numbers come up for
that!

One day I'll finally finish that DAC concept I started 6 yrs ago at
university, and try it with that.

Can I have one for my car please? No really, I want one, and I'll pay
double.

Are you saying it would put packets that have crc error'd into the
buffer? Would it not drop them before that?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Stock Powersupply

2005-09-12 Thread bludragon

If its a linear psu it should be an improvement, just make sure it can
handle the current.

There's an interesting thread on this here:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=14589highlight=super

I'm currently looking into building a psu too, though I've yet to get
very far. My basic plan is to have a single stage regulated supply
some distance away, and then a 2nd regulation stage just outside the
squeezebox case, to drop it down to 5v. The current draw is fairly
significant though. Initially I'll be using some easy single chip
regulators, rather than any fancy circuits.
