Jacky;672389 Wrote: Thanx, Found Soundcheck 2.0 for downloading, but no describtion anymore: can you provide me with any instructions, please? Never did such a mod before... Reagrds Sure, 1. Open Squeezebox Server in Firefox. 2. Open Settings/Advanced 3. Select File Types from the pull down menu in the upper left corner 4. Look for FLAC in the first column. It is configured FLAC native by default. Switch to disabled 5. The PCM field should show flac, if not change it. 6. The same you could do for all other formats where a field PCM exists. Switch all fields to disable except PCM. ( .wav and Apple lossless in particular!!) 7. Now you push Apply at the bottom right hand side of that settings dialog. 8. Restart the Squeezebox Server respectively the PC. Open the setting menu on the Touch: 1. Audio settings Crossfade: none Volumeadjustment: No volume adjustment SoundEffects: None Volume: 100% 2. Brightness Brightness Control: Manual Brightness 3. Screen Screensaver: When playing/stopped/off: Screen Off 4. Advanced Networking: Here you select: Connect to ethernet network Remote Login: Enable ssh Get Winscp start it. 1. Enter the Touch IP address in the Hostname field. 2. As user you enter root, as password you enter 1234 3. As protocol you select SCP 4. Press Login and confirm the pop-up (ssh key generation) with yes. Copy the toolbox 2.0 (Windows) Within WinScp you'll see the local and the remote directory structure side by side. On the PC side change to the directory where you've stored your downloaded touchtoolbox2.0.tar file. On the Touch side (right) you switch from default directory /root ( this is where you end up after logging in to the Touch) one layer up - to the / directory. Just double-click on the single folder icon you'll see on the right side to go one level up. Now Drag and Drop the touchtoolbox2.0 file into that / directory . Unpack the tar-archive (Windows) Open a terminal within WinScp - type: CTRL-T A terminal window opens. Now you enter into the upper command line field, or better do a copy/paste: tar xvf touchtoolbox2.0.tar The archive gets unpacked. All files are distributed to the respective directories with correct permissions. Initialize the Toolbox Just type in the terminal commandline: ttinit and execute The toolbox will now get initialized. The system will reboot immediately afterwards. Check the status of the toolbox by typing ttstat in the command line. Modify the buffer by typing ttbuffer 4000 in the command line and execute. The system will now reboot. You can choose values between 3600us and 2us. 2 is the Touch default Run ttstat to see if the change is active For activating the digital output only, type: ttout -d For analog out only ttout -a For usb out only ttout -u For default status - all outputs on and plugin mode in place ttout -n The system will reboot automatically after that modification. Run ttstat to see if the change is active. To enable WLAN modification enter tt --wlan in the command linre and excecute The system will reboot automatically. To reactivate Wlan run the same command again. Screen-Off modification With this modification you will disable the screen on the fly. This will have a bigger impact then just applying the screen-off screensaver. As a temporary solution you run the Touch commandline : ttscreen To reactivate the screen you need to run a reboot or power reset. If you don't want use the screen at all, you can make that modification permanent, by typing tt --screen There is also a 100% volume mod that I find works well. I'm not sure if its still availabkle for download though. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Squeezebox Touch Mod
First of all, sorry for my bad English. I just want to share some of my impressions regarding SPDIF jive_alsa value settings: By moving back forward of those, I settled finaly to SPDIF 45 jive_alsa 45 for best musical balance and coherence over the whole frequency spectrum. Suggested jive_alsa 55 by many of you sounds too soft, especially in the bass region while in the other hand improves some airy which I found a little strange, soft and less correct for my set-up. SPDIF below 45 goes to the dark side, while over it starts to sound thin by loosing gradually bass the more you higher this value. Bass becomes more contour by switching back to jive_alsa 45 and also the treble (hi-hats,...) are more defined. This my impressions on those settings and may be others for any tasting. I've only used my trusty Bluejeans coax, and am really curious about the differences you heard with other sorts. My experience has been that while many coax cables sound different, which sound better appears to be more a matter of matching the particular components than anything else (exactly what I believe John Swenson said in a thread I read recently). I have a bunch of coax cables, some purchased, some constructed by various people. They range in price from a couple of dollars to a couple hundred or so, and I have had most for 20 years. I have tried maybe ten cables between the Touch and W4S DAC. While many produce slightly different sound, determining which produces the best let alone the correct sound is a tough call. For now at least, I have decided that my ancient MIT coax (the one with the little interface box with dipswitches) probably sounds best overall, but a very close second is another similar age Radio Shack video cable with BNC connectors and adapters, which cost ~10 back then. My maybe third favorite coax is a $3 Radio Shack really crappy looking video cable. Clearly, I haven't seen any correlation at all with price. I have a Blue Jeans coax I bought several years ago, so don't know how similar it is to current models. While it has never sounded bad, it has never provided the best sound in the few systems I have tried it in. Interestingly, I bought a recent vintage MIT digital when they had them for half price a while back. At first I kind of liked its sound (though it sounded different from the 20 year old one), but I would keep thinking I heard weird instances of high frequency noise when using it, particularly when I was listening at very low volume levels--and this happened only with that cable. Very odd. Have never encountered anything like it before. Eventually that newest cable was consigned to the wasted purchase bin. That about sums up my experiences with coax cables between the Touch and W4S DAC. Tried a cheap Toslink briefly too. Not bad, but not as good as the best few coax connections. -- ncarver ncarver's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15905 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89359 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Squeezebox Touch Mod
Finally got around to trying this mod. Created scripts to set and reset all the relevant rtpriorities, then sat with a (Linux) laptop and toggled the settings back and forth as desired while listening. Results: nothing at all. Not even the slightest hint of a possibility of there being a difference in the sound. Tried some very extreme settings and still heard no differences (except for when some made the Touch unresponsive so it had to be power cycled). For reference, I am streaming flac files from the server (SBS) via ethernet (wired), with the Touch connected via coax into a Wyred 4 Sound DAC-1. By comparison, I have found that most every digital cable I have tried between the Touch and DAC-1 affects the sound slightly (ah, but which one is correct??). Running top shows the Touch cpu is generally 75-80% idle while playing flac files, so I am not surprised that changing process priorities had no effect. -- ncarver ncarver's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15905 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89359 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

That worked nicely for me. I have settled on a value of 40 instead of 50 here: chrt -f -p 50 367 I'm really happy with the improvements from these mods and the Soundchek mods. I have two Touch. One feeds a PS Audio DL-III and the other drives a Channel Islands VDA2, each via spdif. Both systems sound better after mods: I enjoy the music more, I think from improved resolution of detail, more accurate tonal reproduction, and a more palpable sense of pace and timing. I don't know how or why this happens. Just what I observe. If it is a placebo effect, it is inexpensive and harmless, and seems to be lasting rather long. -- p-cubed p-cubed's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15028 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89359 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Add the following to the basic rcS script immediately before the call to run squeezeplay (i.e. near the end of file): # Call file 'SB_priority' to set all audio priorities # by ensuring squeezeplay is fully initialised first /etc/init.d/SB_priority 2. Create a new file - 'SB_priority' - in the same directory as rcS and use the following script: #!/bin/sh sleep 100 # Set audio thread priorities # === # Get IRQ for RTC tmp=`cat /proc/interrupts |grep mxc_rtc|cut -f2 -d |cut -f1 -d:` # Get proc # for RTC rtc=`ps -e|grep IRQ-$tmp|cut -f3 -d ` # Get IRQ of SPDIF I/F tmp=`cat /proc/interrupts |grep spdif|cut -f2 -d |cut -f1 -d:` # Get proc # for SPDIF spdif=`ps -e|grep IRQ-$tmp|cut -f3 -d ` # Get proces number for audio threads aud1=`ps -e|grep sirq-timer/0|cut -f5 -d ` aud2=`ps -e|grep sirq-hrtimer/0|cut -f4 -d ` # Get process number for jive_alsa 'music' jalsa1=`ps -eo pid, args|grep jive_alsa -d default|head -1|cut -f3 -d ` # Get process number for jive_alsa 'sound effects' jalsa2=`ps -eo pid, args|grep jive_alsa -d plughw|head -1|cut -f3 -d ` # Set new priorities chrt -f -p 91 $aud1 /dev/null chrt -f -p 93 $aud2 /dev/null chrt -f -p 44 $spdif /dev/null chrt -f -p 87 $rtc /dev/null # check the new priorities with: # ps -eLo pid, cls, rtprio, pri, nice, cmd | grep -i irq # check all priorities with: # ps -eLo pid, cls, rtprio, pri, nice, cmd # Set jive_alsa priority jalsa1=`ps -eo pid, args|grep jive_alsa -d default|head -1|cut -f3 -d ` chrt -f -p 55 $jalsa1 /dev/null # sound effects only xx jasla2=`ps -eo pid, args|grep jive_alsa -d plughw|head -1|cut -f3 -d ` 3. Hi Rick, You only have to type the 'chmod' command once before the first reboot. It changes the file attributes permanently. If you type the following at the command line: ls -l /etc/init.d/SB_priority It should return: -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 1311 Aug 23 12:42 /etc/init.d/SB_priority (-rwxr-xr-x shows that the file has full access rights where x = the executable flag) If you use the following command 2 - 3 mins after a reboot you will be able to see if the new settings have stuck: ps -eLo pid, cls, rtprio, pri, nice, cmd Look for process numbers (pid) 5, 11, 367, 407 in the late 600's - early 700's - my jive_alsa pid has varied between 679, 718 or 719 far :). yep, changing the prios of the IRQ stuff seems to be working when the commands are put directly in rcS after the last command. Putting a little sleep (10 secs) make the jive_alsa commands work too. Brilliant! Thanks JohnS and Lintweaker. Thats script works for me. Although my variant sets spdif to my new preferred value: 40 Yep no change at all to spdif! Being new to this forum, I'll try not to make a complete fool of myself... but I recently upgraded from SBD to SBT and noticed an improvement. Then I found the Toolbox2 mod and applied it except the WLAN (since I use it) and the screen parts and have only the digital out enabled. Maybe I could hear a slight improvment... Jeff Flowerday;651240 Wrote: Just a wild guess but maybe the jive_alsa process hasn't spawned yet when the rcS script fires? This is true, the last thing in the rcS starts squeezeplay (the big program that does all the SB stuff). Squeezeplay starts the jive_alsa processes and then goes into its own loop, it never retruns back to the rcS script. So in order to get the jive_alsa process number you wave to check after squeezeplay has started. The easiest way to do this is to put your commands in a separate file which has a sleep at the beginning, here is what it might look like with a name such as SB_priority.sh: sleep 100 chrt... ... ... In the end of the rcS file, just before the squeezeplay command type: SB_priority.sh The '' at the end is important, this causes the script to run as a separate process in parallel to the squeezeplay process. That should do it. Not only the quantity but the quality also. Changing the jive_asla to 55 i.e. higher than the SPDIF, seems to bring the balance back but I found it just sounds wrong in my system so I've changed it back and dropped to 44. Do you find that 41 makes enough difference to be worthwhile over the default? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Squeezebox Touch Mod
Setting jive_alsa to 55 enhances the entire sound stage, in my system it is a welcome change. Increasing SPDIF priority is what changes the equation of the music. It enhances certain high frequencies, thereby creating a sense of spaciality and darker background. But as you listen it is fatiguing and more analytical. I feel the sense of music is lost while the sense of instruments is more. I set SPDIF to 41, hence not losing the bass and also giving it a higher priority than the other processes at 40. I till now did not hear any difference in setting the SPDIF priority to 40 or 41, but think there will be some thing good which I do not hear. -- lake_eleven lake_eleven's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=48979 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89359 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Without changing the jive from default, 59 was shocking in the change possible but I preferred 44 - 48 looked to have more potential. Can I clarify a passing comment earlier in the thread? If I now put the powered HD directly in the Touch, addresses will change with the change of hardware and values will not be applied correctly, or not all all? It certainly sounds different, although the values need to be different. I don't know if they are the values as set or not.
