Is there a way to get them from the courthouse without a personal visit?
The card is attached.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Military Records

2014-04-25 Thread Kawika322
Does anyone know if they kept Military Records for individuals during the early
1700's? For instance, they must have documented when an individual achieved the
title of Alferes or Capitao and listed some personal info about the person.
Maybe the Angra archives or library would have something..

I ask this because I have not been able to find out any more info about who the
parents or siblings might be of my ancestor who was a Capitao in Luz, Graciosa
in the early 1700's. I cannot find his baptismal or marriage record, so this
would be a long shot..

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

David

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Bizarre...but is it true?

2014-04-25 Thread Liliana Harris
Since words have multiple meanings, particularly on translation, could the
intent of beat been different? Keeping in mind that I know absolutely no
Portuguese... I found that the most common term for to beat is vencer *but
*that word's most common reverse translation is actually not a physical
beating but rather overcoming, as in showing mastery over or subjugating.
Just a thought...

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Bizarre...but is it true?

2014-04-25 Thread Tanya Smith
I found this in an academia paper cited below. pg. 7 talks about secondary
burial. I am wondering if the Beating of the Body was actually the beating
or patting of the dirt (earth) that covered the body at the secondary
burial. Just my two cents.

Secondary burial - In many small parterres (burial grounds) the corpses are
buried in ditches made in
the soil, and they are covered with earth at a depth of three or four
inches. The soil
that covers the corpses is left loose, and is not even beaten

This description was probably referred to funerary rites taking place
according to
the mechanisms of secondary burial. Dead bodies buried under small heaps of
loose
soil; corpses not yet decomposed that were recovered so that their clothes
could be
changed; finally, exhumation of partially decayed corpses aimed at
completing the
defleshing process within niches within the walls ...

Hello All,
I just wanted to share with all about a wonderful class I'm taking in

Someone posted the notice on this site so I thought I'd give it a go.
Thank you whoever posted it.
Mary Del Pino is the teacher. Each week we cover a different Island,
Traditions, Foods, culture, etc. It has given me a very different
perspective on my heritage. I hope to make it to the premier of Portuguese
Coming to America this Sunday night in San Jose also.
Now that I'm retired I will finally get to start back up with my research
and find those I have not had luck with before. So I'll be asking a lot of
questions of you all.

Thanks in advance and just thought I'd share about the class if anyone gets
a chance to take it in the future I give it 2 thumbs up.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with marriage record

2014-04-25 Thread Dano
Erica, *There are TWO bottom of the pages in the image in your link, you
need to specify which you are referring to -* the one on the left shouldn't
present any problem for anyone to read, so I will presume that you are
having difficulty with the page on the right. I agree with Hermano, this
record does not mention the people you refer to; it is a Marriage record
for Domingos de Mello (fisherman), son of Simao da Costa and Maria
Fernandes with Maria de Souza, daughter of Joao Furtado, and what appears
to be *another** *Maria de Souza, as her mother. The narrative states
that the bride's parents are both deceased - that is all that pertains to
the Bride's family. From there, the narrative goes on to mention several
prominent dignitaries witnessing the event, but there is no mention of
anyone named 'Manuel' de Souza, or Maria 'Rodriguez.' I think that you may
have just read the names wrong.

working on anthropology type things. These are the Short Nucleotide
Polymorphism (SNPs) that can place a male on the tree of mankind - the out
of Africa stuff. Some people really enjoy getting into anthropology.
However, these type of tests do NOT help in a genealogy time frame. If
your focus is finding cousins, then SNP testing is not for you. At least
not at this time. When the interest changes to anthropology or interest in
the out of Africa theory, SNP testing can be done then. These tests are
not for women either. It is done on the Y chromosome and only men have
that. So if a woman want to have a DNA test done during this current sale,
she needs to have a man take the test (uncle, brother, nephew, male
cousin). The type of DNA testing focuses on 1 line only: The father's
father's father's father of the male taking the test.

The current guidelines for obtaining U.S. naturalization records can be
accessed from the USCIS web site here:

Can anyone tell me where and how to get naturalization records from
Bristol County. I think they may be in Taunton but I'm not sure.
Is there a way to get them from the courthouse without a personal visit?
 The card is attached.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Street address House number, for Azores

2014-04-25 Thread pico
Tanya, Records of death might be your best bet on this.Since Manoel Rapozo de Amaral (now spelled as Manuel Raposo do Amaral) died in 1904, then maybe one or two of his siblings stayed behind in Candelaria, or his wife's village of Ginetes. So trace them and/or their grandchildren, up to 1905 which is where the Sao Miguel records on CCA all end right now. At the very top of the death look for wording like "in a house with no number ..." (struck out there, except it does give the street), or maybe a lucky find like "in house number 21 on rua da Areia" (a street I am making up, but it says the actual house number).Keep in mind that whatever house number you find in 1900 will almost certainly have changed by now. But maybe you can use the biblioteca to locate an old map.I did exactly these things for my Hungarian ancestors. I located a map from about 100 years ago and it shows every house in the village. I would think something will exist for you like that.Boa sorte e boa viagem!Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Aloha,Does anyone know which type of records would include addresses / house numbers etc. I'm talking about older records 1800 -1900? I already have the church but would love to get something more. I was wondering if I could be lucky enough to try and locate some connection to my family from Candelaria or Ginetes. I'm visiting the area this June.My Mothers paternal side:Henrique Jose Rapozo de Amaral - PortugalSp Geronima Maria - PortugalChildren:Manoel Rapozo de Amaral b. 1826 Candalaria, Sao Miguel, d. 1904 HI SP.
