[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: How many Maria's......

2015-01-03 Thread David Perry
My grandmother, Francisca, had three Maria sisters. Not unusual except the
order Maria, Maria, Francisca, Maria of the four girls matches the pattern
exactly for the previous generation Maria, Maria, Francisca, Maria. The
first two Marias of my grandmother's generation each married a Manoel
Lima. Took years to sort that out.

On a related note, I have a few expostas in my ancestry and none of them
are named Maria. Is that intentional? Was the name Maria reserved for
legitimate children?

Today I found the missing child (the parents and grandparents match all

Maybe. I never thought about it. I just went right now to Sao Miguel
Arcanjo church (the Matriz - they seem to have more expostos) in Vila
Franca on Sao Miguel island and I checked the baptism index for Maria. I
looked at the end of the Marias, the beginning of the Marias, Marias born
to parents whose name start with P (for Pais incognitos), Marias born to
parents whose name start with I (for Incognitos). I didn't see any. I
don't know if they weren't indexed or maybe it's one of those rules, like
you observed. Next time I'm searching the records, I'm going to remember
that and see if it pans out (at least on Sao Miguel where I do most of my
research).

The study on Flores indicates that Flores was settled by Continental
Portuguese, Madeirans, and Azoreans from all the islands in the Azores but

suspect it would be quite a challenge to figure out how I share DNA with my

Since a few results from the beginning of the Holiday DNA Sale will begin to
hit us next week, I thought now might be a good time to go over this.

Y-DNA: The top of the pedigree chart. Y-DNA traces a man's father's father's
father's line only. All men, all the way back. A man must take this test. If
you're a man, you are in luck. If you are not a male, you'll need your
brother, your uncle, a male cousin whose father's father's father's line is the
one you want.

What you get back is a string of numbers. Let's say you are the guy on top and
your match is the guy on the bottom.

(Don't get too excited over my example. I used the Western Atlantic Modal
Haplotype).

What this means is you and your match have what is called a genetic distance of
one. Genetic genealogists are a bit acronym obsessed, so they write GD=1.

What it REALLY means though depends on the number of markers you test. For a
genealogical match, you need to test 37 or more markers (the tests are for 37,
67, and 111 markers). There is nothing wrong with starting at the 12 marker
level and upgrading to the 37 or higher marker level as your budget may allow.
Just don't expect anything meaningful from a 12 or 25 marker match.

Here is Family Tree DNA's handy dandy chart if figuring out if the genetic
distance is meaningful or not at the higher marker levels.

37 markers: http://goo.gl/VnivpP

67 markers: http://goo.gl/GAU7zc

111 markers: http://goo.gl/nvG0Hp

(FTDNA loves to rearrange things, so I just go to Google and type in: genetic
distance markers)

My dad has no 37 or 67 marker matches. He has 12 and 25 marker matches, but I
have the 12 marker turned off (he is grayed out if anyone matches him). This
is under the Settings tab, if anyone gets too many emails about this level of
matching.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: DNA STUDY AZORES

2015-01-03 Thread A Faria
Thanks Tomas,

This study is interesting but it doesn't collect enough samples from the
Central and Western Azores. The MtDNA study is much more thorough and fair
in that respect although it labels all samples with origins in Africa as
African it doesn't differentiate between North African and Sub Saharan
African.

It would be nice if someone did an updated more thorough study of the
Azores studying each island analyzing MtDNA and Y-DNA and Autsomal DNA that
was fair as far as the number of samples obtained. The Y-DNA study is not
representative of the entire Azores.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Children in CCA passport records?

2015-01-03 Thread Diane Cox
I am beginning to look for my Great-grandmother in the passport records.
According to family tradition, she came without her parents. She married
in California at age 16. Census records suggest she came possibly as young
as 8. Would she be listed individually? I haven't seen any ages that are
young.

When you are searching, do you look at each name or scan for the correct
island and then look at the name?

Thank you,
Diane

Diane,

It depends. If I'm look for a Maria, no, I won't scan the names if I knew
the freguesia. If I didn't know the freguesia, I'd have to scan for the
name. If it's a more uncommon name, I may scan the records for that. So it
just depends.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Graciosa Baptism - Name of Mother

Happy New Year everyone.  I've been working on the US side for a while, but am
back to crawling the CCA images again.
I read the referenced record (No. 47, lower right), as Antonio Correia de Melo
son of Antonio Correia de Melo, Senior and Violente Augusta Solidade.  I am
having a lot of trouble thinking Violente is the correct first name of the
mother.  Is this the correct transcription?  If so, has anyone seen this name
before?
