won't find it because it's misspelled. :(

The bride's mom is Maria S.ta (Maria Santa). Compare the "S" to the one in

The section of the main record that you didn't quite get is where the priest

As always, corrections are much appreciated.

Hope this helps :)

>
> Hi Suzanne,

Here is what I wrote about them a while back when it came up:

For those of you who are not familiar with Confessional Rolls, they have
the genealogical application of a census, and include much of the same
information... (i.e. Head of household, subsequent family members, their
relationship to the head of house, their age, occupation, the neighborhood
or street they resided in, and occasionally the address and sometimes other
notes. I even have found the father of an illegitimate ancestor in these
rolls. The priest walked and recorded the data house to house so you also
can find info by seeing who they lived near or next to.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Leam vs Leal

2017-08-19 Thread Cheri Mello
"am" is the older ending for what is "ão" today.

Sam Miguel or Sam Jorge is São Miguel or São Jorge today. Joam is João
today. So Leam would be the old version of Leão (Lion) which I haven't seen
much of. James Guill lists them as separate surnames.

You should post the link to the record to be sure.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Confessional Rolls

2017-08-19 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Suzanne,

The Confession Rolls were sort of a Church Census that the Priest took each
year to see who had made their confessions and communion. The usefulness is
that it places your family in a specific place and tells you who is living
together in that house. Often times the mother or mother-in-law is living
with a daughter's family. In later years (late 1900's at least) the
relationship to the head of house is given.

I would say yes, Suzanne. The Priests had that little trick that they did
with so many names/places etc. Sam Jorge, Sam Jose, Joam etc.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Almada family; Sao Jorge; DNA testing

2017-08-19 Thread Cheri Mello
Chase,
It's best to go offlist with this now and email one of the project admins,
as we don't see anyone named Chase nor anyone registered with the above
email address in the Azores DNA project.

It's a large amount of data that has to go through the FTDNA system and
then the matches are retrieved. So it could take 2 hours or 24 hours. Click
on your Matches button to see. If it says 24 hours (the system only counts
in 24 hours blocks), then check back later today or tonight.

Here are the join instructions. Maybe you didn't click the orange "Join" at
the end or maybe it didn't go through or something.

Log into the FTDNA page with the kit number and password.

Across the top is says: myFTDNA, DNA Tests, ProjectsPoint at Projects.
When the drop down menu appears, click "Join a project."

If the Azores Islands appears on the top, click the link and scroll down to
the JOIN button at the end.

If the Azores Islands is not suggested, scroll down to where it says
"Search by Surname" and type: azores.

When Azores Islands appears, click the link and follow the directions.

I would ask Cheri or Rosemarie to call the SLC Family History Library and ask
the Portuguese Librarian to set up a time at the conference where we could meet
together (maybe right after dinner) where questions can be asked/answered.

My understanding is very basic – but I am really pushing for these records to
be indexed. What that mean – and please verify this with the librarian – we
wouldn’t necessarily need to learn to read the old Portuguese script. We could
type in a name, and the image will come up along with the “transcribe”
information. I just looked up a name in FamilySearch – the name was Helen
Evans, residence in California, and the top result was a census record, on the
right side is the original document, and on the left side is the transcribe
infor. On Ancestry you get the transcribed information, or it may look for a
name in a document (like a newspaper).

The documents would have to be indexed (transcribed) by a person, I have seen
it done. There is an army of people who are indexing records – my neighbor was
working on the WWII veterans records. We just need to know IF the Azorean
records have been indexed, if not where are they in the queue and if they are
in the queue how many petitions would it take to move it forward.

Let’s talk more at the conference.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Mother's name

2017-08-19 Thread bsei2816
I agree that the last name is Machado, but think the first name is Maria.
The newly available SJ marriage index shows a Manuel Pereira de Lemos
marrying a Maria de Luis Machado on 12 Oct 1711 in this same parish. I
can't read it with certainty, but I think that might be the parents on this
baptism. The only names I see clearly enough to guess are Manuel and Lemos
for the father and Machado for the mother.
