Hi! Family Finder Test QUESTIONS: - In the section Pending Relationships somebody pointed me out as his/her cousin. This pointer person does not have her or his pedigree gedcom. How do I know/confirm the selection she/he did? Now I am asked to point out our which relationship he or she is to me. Joam was born at Nossa Senhora da Estrela, Ribeira Grande. Quitéria was born at Divino Espírito Santo, Maia, Ribeira Grande. Joam was the son of Paulo Francisco and Doroteia (Dorothea) de Jesus, both from Maia. Hi Group, Anyone researching FURNAS? My brick wall: João de Sousa married to Maria (TAVARES?) In 1861 he was know as João de Sousa Adam (Adão) Below is the only reference I have found about him: João de Sousa adam, married man and land owner, living in a street named Rua Direita de Santana, witnessed the marriage of Jacinto de Sousa, a 19 year old boy (son of Jacinto de Sousa, farm worker and of Maria Ferreira, both living at Rua (street) do Estaleiro). Jacinto de Sousa Married to Rosa Jacinta (23 year old girl, daughter of José Borges and Bárbara da Conceição). The marriage took place in 23 of january, 1861. Where they relatives, siblings? It looks like but who knows? This name ADAM (Adão) is for sure a nick name. There are so many SOUSA in Furnas that they needed to know who was who! Sometimes we do know that this was a nickname not yet being a part of the name just because it was written with no capitalized initial letter. This is the case of the way the priest wrote the names of the relatives of the married: Jacinto de Sousa was the grandchild of João de Sousa creador and of Maria da Estrela, and he was the maternal grandchild of Manuel Ferreira and Maria Francisca. Rosa Jacinta, the bride, was man«ternal granddaughter of António da Costa Carneiro and of Francisca da Conceição. The two João de Sousa, one adam (adão) and the other creador (criador) where both witnesses what leeds us to the conclusion they where part of each family. Hi, The authorization to get married was issued after the verification of the actual situation of the persons. Only the Bishop or his substitute, the OUVIDOR could give permission to marriages. Everybody wanting to get married had to apply to the OUVIDORIA to get permission to be married. They were declared with or without impediments. The OUVIDOR was the Bishop representative and the OUVIDORIA was the ecclesiastic bureau. Certain degrees of consanguinity could be pardoned by the payment of a fine and a penitence. Like many of us I descend from Guilherme and Margarida through 3 of his children due to cousin marriages so I like to read whatever I can find about the family. This has information that was new to me and while I do see some definite problems with some dates that absolutely can't be right my reason for writing now has to do with an odd wording on page 64. Up until this entry the deaths are stated deceased but then for D. Luzia de Sousa born around 1619 and executed on 1-31-1669. I found it odd that of all the previous entries this was the first with that wording. I went to her obit on the CCA site ...it's legible however, my Portuguese isn't good enough for nuance or any interpretation other than what I clearly understand. There are two named PRIMO PACHECO BERNARDO. I have started to read the PROCLAMAS from Ouvidoria da Ribeira Grande, or the dossiers people had to do to announce their intention to be married. As you know also the priests had to confirm the baptismo and desobriga or óbito. In this dossiers we can find who were the parents of both bride and groom, date of baptism and burriage. I have learned that most of the times the marriage would have place within one week, sometimes the next day. So knowing the date of the HABILITAÇÃO to marry (means no impediments were found against the marriage), we know with god accuracy the marriage date. I have read hundreds of HABILITAÇÃO. I have found one or two marriages of my ancestors there. The OUVIDORIA da Ribeira Grande documents cover: (1723) Matriz, Conceição, S. Hi, I am working on the deaths of Furnas and I have found: Maria do Espírito Santo died 17.MAR.1897. She was 32. She was married to Francisco Pimentel Lasquinha. They had no Children. Parents were Manuel da COSTA CARNEIRO and Jacinta Ferreira. She lived at Rua do Estaleiro, Santana, Furnas. It says they all were born in Santana, Furnas. Does not state their occupation. This famous quote belongs to Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux, France, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, who in nine days in June 1940 saved 30,000 World War II refugees, among them over 10,000 Jews, who were fleeing Nazi-occupied territories. Prior to his assignment in Bordeaux, Sousa Mendes served as Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco from 1921 to 1924. The Bay Area Portuguese-American community will be honoring the “Angel of Bordeaux” with a placement of a wreath at the Portuguese Consulate, 3298 Washington Street, San Francisco, CA on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10 AM celebrating the 70th anniversary of Sousa Mendes’ act of defiance against his superiors, a true Act of Conscience. An art exhibit and reception will follow at the Portuguese Consulate. Artists Nathan Oliveira, John Mattos, Maxine Olson, João de Brito, Maria Pavão-Hadsell, Roberto Ávila, and Sousa Mendes’ own grandson Sebastian Mendes are confirmed. The event is hosted by the Consul General of Portugal, António Costa Moura, the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America, and The Portuguese Tribune. Confirmed guests include the Consul General of Israel, the Office of the Mayor of San Francisco, and members of the Sousa Mendes family. The event is open to the public. Special intention Masses and other events are planned throughout the world. At the Vatican, Their Eminences William Cardinal Levada, Claudio Cardinal Hummes, and Renato Raffaele Cardinal Martino will concelebrate a Thanksgiving Mass at the Church of Santa Maria di Transpontina on June 17 in Sousa Mendes’ honor. Special Masses will be said at the cathedrals of Lisbon and Braga in Portugal and other events will take place in Paris and Bordeaux in France, São Paulo, Fortaleza, and São Salvador da Bahia in Brazil, Newark, NJ, Brooklyn, NY, Montreal, Canada, and San José, CA where a special Mass will be said on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 11 AM at Five Wounds Portuguese National Church, 1375 East Santa Clara Street, during the celebration of the Day of Portugal. Aristides de Sousa Mendes was born on July 19, 1885 in Cabanas de Viriato, district of Viseu, Portugal, to a rural aristocratic and devout Catholic family. After completing his law degree at the University of Coimbra, he pursue along with his twin brother César, a diplomatic career. Bordeaux was not the first assignment where Sousa Mendes fought for his convictions. At age 55 nearly reaching the end of his diplomatic career and the father of 14 children, Sousa Mendes put his life and those of his family at risk by disobeying dictator António de Oliveira Salazar’s strict orders not to issue any visas to Jews and foreigners of unknown origin. In the end, he lost his diplomatic career, could not exercise law, had to surrender his foreign-issued driver’s license, was stripped of his pension, suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed, lost his wife Maria Angelina in 1948, lost his children to emigration, and died in poverty on April 3, 1954. Two days after his death, his twin brother César received a handwritten note from Salazar with only two words on it: “My condolences.” In 2007, Sousa Mendes was selected in a Portuguese TV program as the third Greatest Portuguese of all time. What is less known about Aristides de Sousa Mendes is that he was Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco between October 15, 1921 and 1924 when he was assigned to Maranhão, Brazil. His ninth and tenth children, Carlos and Sebastião, were born in Berkeley on February 11, 1922 and San Francisco on October 7, 1923 respectively. Carlos died on June 4, 1999 in Los Angeles and Sebastião died on December 17, 2006 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Both brothers opted for US Citizenship and served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. In 1950, Sousa Mendes’ 13th child, John Paul Abranches, who was born in Louvain, Belgium in 1932, immigrated to the United States, joined the Army, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. Hi Group, I hope I can help with my non English native speaker… Nowadays in S. Miguel (and I think around the nine Islands) the word lavrador means someone who breads cows, milk and meat. One owns a lavoura! This is due to the change in the traditional farming: Farmers (agriculture and cattle breading) changed to cattle breeders. Lavrar means to plow the land Agricultor is the word for farmer In the 18th, 19th and even 20th centuries, the word Camponês is the word for someone who works in agriculture and Campónio is the word for a camponês less skilled in the agriculture technics. Hi group, Just a small contribution or some information about the “não receberam as bençãos”: “bençãos or bençoes” = kind of holly benediction. The studies about why not receiving the bençãos are not conclusive about it. The “bençãos” were a very important part of the marriage celebration; it should be given to all the “contraentes or noivos” (bride and groom) unless they were both widowers or the wife was a widow… Most of the times at the ADVENTO and QUARESMA the “bençãos” were not given. Sometimes they received the bençãos in a different day of the marriage. Looking for info on: Orlando Tavares or Pacheco(?) and Alexandrina Tavares or Pacheco(?), living in Furnas S. Miguel Azores. Around the 50s they would be in their 40s. They were the owners of a Firm: Orlando Pacheco, Furnas S. Miguel Azores. They were owners of a debulhadora (a grain-threshing machine) - They use to work in Água dAlto Mr. Orlando was also in the wood cutting and transport. Related(?) to the owners of Padaria Branco (bread bakery), in Furnas. They had a son Orlando, born about 1920s Água de Pau(?), Furnas S. Miguel Azores. I have consulted the Books of Marriages of Ribeira Quente, from 19 May 1833 to 18 Oct 1900 (555 marriages) and I have found this nicknames as names: - Carrossas(wagons), Fonfinha (Fluffy?), Preto (Black), Bonito (Beautiful), Quieto(Still), Benfeito (well manufactured), Cidade(City), Rozenina(son/daughter of a woman named Rosa) - Mello Mellão (Mello Melon), Mello Piné (?), Mello Pedreiro (Mello Stonemason), Mello Gafanhoto (Mello Grasshopper). Quente Idalinda de Jesus 21, parents José Botelho and Maria de Jesus Maria, 4 months, parent Manuel Lourenço Bonito Maria de Jesus, 56, Jacintho de Teves and Ana de Jesus Maria Thereza 17 (she is under the same passport number).
