Eric, most of the Church records (Catholic) of Mexico are on
FamilySearch.org. If you know the village and state you can find them. They
are pretty easily read as they follow the same format as the Portuguese
Church records!! Just need the Spanish Genealogical Word List which can be
downloaded from FamilySearch.org!!

Eric S,

I think Mexico's records are the same - use the Catholic Church records.
Eric Edgar, on this list, researches Mexico too, I think. They will follow
pretty much the same format - just in Spanish.

Fingers crossed! You guys are great - thank you. I'm excited that I'll get
to spend some time dedicated to learning more about all of this in Salt
Lake City.

On a separate note, my wife is from Mexico - I've been able to find some
records through the churches and death records from hospitals, but do you
know anything about if/how Mexican records are kept in Salt Lake City as
well? Obviously I'm going for the Portuguese seminars and to learn from you
guys, but it would be great to dig into that a little as well.

No, I believe these are different Alexanders ... I'm guessing this is my
Alex's godfather, Alexander S Borba, living in the East Bay ... I actually
requested and received their marriage certificate - will look for that and
will scan it to review again.

Interestingly enough, also, there was an Edward Souza born to a Mary Souza
(formerly Rose) in Alameda on 16 Oct 1908, one year before my grandfather's
birth. My grandfather's social security info shows his birth as 21 Oct 1909
... so maybe Godfather has an Edward Souza, and a year later, godson has an
Edward Souza? Something odd there, but that's my assumption ...

Was Alex married before?
Alexander S. Borba married Mary Rose on May 23, 1903, Book 30, page 266,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Alexander Souza immigration challenge

2016-06-12 Thread Eric Souza
Very good point. I do have my grandfather's social, so that's a good hint
... I'll look into how to get that. At least, it might let me know his
county of birth, so I wouldn't have to pay for another record and get a No
File Found reply. Could have been born in Alameda for that matter, as the
other Alexander S Borba was in Oakland. And I'll check the Marin Genealogy
Society as well. Or, I could see if maybe a small donation could help
encourage the church to open their books.

It's been a lot of fun, digging into the research - I really appreciate
your suggestions and help!

names of an immigrant that is still in the 'old country' because they were
listed as the beneficiaries of the life insurance policy. Then, when your
single immigrant got married the parent name was crossed out the the wife
was listed. It also is a place to verify your island of birth and if you

You're not going to like this.

CA did not start recording births until 1905. They were not required until
1949!!! If he received Social Security though, he may have filed a Delayed
Certificate of Birth.

I checked for a Random Act of Genealogical Kindness, but see none who do
church records. You may want to contact the Marin County Genealogy Society
and see if anyone there will do church records:
http://www.maringensoc.org/Research.

My immigrants came in 1901 & 1903. They were missed on the 1910 and the
1920 censuses. They were out working when the census taker came by (well,
the 1910, they may have been moving to CA).

You should check the Passaportes out of the Azores too (once you narrow
down the immigration date). You don't know if that illegal immigration
story is true or not.

Another item to note - Alexander had married Mary Catan Mancebo in
Sausalito, and on the 1910 census, I don't see Alex and Mary ... the rest
of the Mancebo family is there, as well as some Souza and Borba families,
but I can't find them in 1910! Wondering if he didn't want to be counted,
if he was there illegally ...

Comments: My husband, Robert Souza and I are going to the Azores in two
weeks. He would like to locate any relatives from his grandfather's side.
His grandfather’s name was *Alexander Souza *and came through Ellis Island
in 1896. Ellis Island had him listed as Alexander De Souza. We believe he
was born around 1880. Everything states that he came from *Sao Jorge,
Portugal *but doesn't tell us anything else. We know of no other relatives
of his that emigrated. If we had a birth village we could locate records
and perhaps relatives.

Eric,

Wrong Alex on the 1900 census. As you said, the ages are no where near
close, that Alex's wife is not Maria/Mary but an Ingelina or Angelina and
they were married within that year.

Where is Alex in 1910?

I haven't had to research Marin County in 1907, but the marriage license
*might* contain more information. What's in the book. I checked the Family
History Library Catalog (FHLC) and I'm not sure that there is anymore. It
lists only affidavits for marriages in that time period.

The death certificate says Alex had been in CA for 15 years, but the
informant is the undertaker. Not too sure how reliable his info is. He
didn't have the name of the Alex's parents, so I would guess not too
accurate.

Can you find him on the 1910?

Eric, the UPEC is/was a Fraternal Organization that sold insurance
policies to Portuguese and also other immigrants (Italian, German, Swiss
etc.) The nice thing about finding your people is that often there are
other relatives in the same Councelho/Coucil. You also may find parent
names of an immigrant that is still in the 'old country' because they were
listed as the beneficiaries of the life insurance policy. Then, when your
single immigrant got married the parent name was crossed out the the wife
was listed. It also is a place to verify your island of birth and if you
are lucky, the village!

Hi,

At least some of the UPEC records are online at Ancestry at in a collection of
death and burial records.

California, Death and Burial Records from Select Counties, 1873-1987

He was also known on his probate (here is a link to download his probate
<https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/57041182/Alex-Souza-Probate.pdf> ) as
“Alexander Souza Borba” and “Alexander S Borba”.

Family legend says he was a whaler. Since there are no records that I have
found for him immigrating legally (no voting records in Marin County, CA, or
listings on the Atlantic ship manifests into New Bedford), I am guessing he
came over illegally on a whaling boat in 1897 or early 1898 when he was 15, to
avoid conscription to the Portuguese military – required at age 16.

He might have come on a whaling ship to one of the east coast ports. If so,
once he jumped ship in New England (I’m assuming New Bedford), he would have
likely taken the train over to San Francisco. I have been in contact with the
New Bedford Whaling Museum, and they said they only have records of the

records in their collection for a select number of vessels and some of them do
list the names of those who joined mid-voyage.

Again, that's all speculation on my part. There were no Atlantic whalers that
went on pacific voyages after 1892, so he wouldn't have taken a boat directly
to San Francisco.

There is no record that I have found of him between his birth and his marriage
in 1907 to Mary Catan Mancebo in Sausalito.

There were dairies in Sausalito and Mill Valley (specifically Tennessee Valley)
that were owned by immigrants from São Jorge. A da Cunha family (I think it was
Manoel Ferreira da Cunha, born Oct 1848, São Jorge) owned a large dairy there.
Then there was another dairy shown on the 1880 Census by partners Antonio Souza
(born about 1850), Antonio Borba (1853), August Silva (1846) and Manuel Souza
(1859). I'm guessing that these were possibly cousins, but I haven't been able

There was also an Alexander Souza showing up in Point Reyes (western Marin
County) on the 1900 census, but the ages don’t match up … also an Alexander
Souza Borba in the East Bay ... my Alex's padrinho was Alexandre de Souza de
