Human error. (Smile). In all likelihood, while using Internet Explorer or other browser, you probably clicked or pressed enter on a warning message telling you that certain worms or viruses had been discovered on your computer and that you should click on a Scan or Clean link to get rid of them. In fact, when you clicked on the scan link promising to clean your computer, this was actually a virus you were installing. I'm sure your computer probably went crazy after that with crazy popups and weird sounds, and when you tried running your antivirus such as MSE you could not do so. there are many, many variants of this malware on the internet. The reason you got infected was not because Microsoft Security Essentials failed you (there is no major commercial antivirus that can protect the user from mistakes in judgment when it comes to this kind of prompt). AVG will not be able to help you if you come across the same type of prompt, and Nod32 will also not be able to protect you. The computer user also bares some responsibility for the security of their computer. You should seriously consider taking a multi-layer approach to protection. You should use a properly configured MSE, and use Malwarebytes Pro for full real time protection (do not use the free malwarebytes as it can't protect you in real time and will probably not be completely effective in ridding your computer of malware after the fact). Very glad to hear you are back on your feet as I was a bit upset when this happened to me also. Luckily, I had an image of my computer from just a few days prior, which I was able to use to restore my computer to a working state within an hour. Re: [Blind-Computing] More about the Special Cassette Player
Hi sharen I had the same cassette player, to be honest I wasn't impressed with the recordings. or the tape player itself. the tapes would play either too fast or slow and at times would even chew up a precious tape. the best tape player i've found is a sony walkman type. Re: [Blind-Computing] More about the Special Cassette Player
Hi John if Sharen has the same tape player as I think she does, it's by ion. personally I believe it to be a waste of money. you'd be better off to find a decent ordinary tape player and a cable directly in to your soundcard. Using something like goldwave will result in a much higher quality recording. of course this is my own personal opinions as I never had a decent quality recording from ion. tape that would play fine on any other player wouldn't play at the correct speed on the ion tape player. also it did chew up a couple tapes. tapes that aren't replaceable I might add. so I do not trust it. besides the point the tape player itself is very plastic and feels like a childs toy. thanks Elaine -Original Message- From: John Carvalho Sent: Wednesday, August 15, 2012 2:15 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] More about the Special Cassette Player What's the name of it? Re: [Blind-Computing] Alva Braille Displays
Hiya sorry if this has already been replied to, just catching up on backed up emails. lol. the difference between normal alva to alva satalite is, the satalite are able to take batteries so they can be more portable with laptops. the normal alva displays are mains only making them primary use for desktops or machines that aren't meant to be portable. as to recommendations, it depends if you want one that can be portable, usually to work with laptops etc. I have an older satellite but I use it on my desktop as I don't have a laptop. I've never had any issues with it other than when I used it on a machine that had an AMD processor. don't know why but it always had connection issues. when I got my new computer I went with a Intel motherboard and its ok now. weird. no one has ever confirmed that was the issue though so its a personal solution not an official one. Maybe they have improved things now, mine is over 5 years old. I use the display on both XP and vista and use jaws as a screen reader. hope this explains things. hugs Elaine - Original Message - From: Niamh niam.mcke...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, October 02, 2011 2:01 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] Alva Braille Displays I had just decided to choose an Alva Braille display, 80 cell, and discovered that there is also a satellite version. hi Chris know this appears to be a strange thing to say, no, leave it alone. trust me, it will sort itself out. when you go to get her email, if you get the error message, dot click wait, click on the cancel, you'll see an error message but you will get emails. I get this periodically and it drives me nuts. At first I tried all sorts of things, re installing my account, to changing passwords, I accidentally found out about the above method of just canceling the download. don't know why it works but it does. For the past few days it's been starting to reject her password. It happened Sunday morning UK time, then it was fine once I re-enabled enable POP for all mail in Googlemail's forwarding and pop settings. I tried the same technique today as once again it's rejecting her password, and this time it's not working. Should I consider changing her password? Don't worry; she's given me permission to do all this as she's away and didn't want her inbox to clog up when she gets back. Please advise as soon as possible as I'd like to get this resolved in time for when she gets back tomorrow. Re: [Blind-Computing] potentially serious windows problem, can someone explain this message?
hi what I meant was, I had sent a program to Steve to help him with his computer virus. Out of curiosity I ran it myself, not only to find out if it was accessible but also to learn how it worked in the first place. although this program said it was free, it is free to scan but you have to purchase the program to have it remove items. it turned out when I had completed the initial scan, the program found two infections but as a result of them wishing you to purchase the program, it didn't tell me what the infections where. any way, I decided to purchase the program. this wasn't easy at all as I had to enter a number in to a box that jaws wouldn't go to without a lot of persuading. when I finally got that sorted out the so called infections weren't anything series any way. Never the less, I removed them and that process was a nightmare. I've paid for this program now for a month so might as well use it. it did another scan on it's own and found an item in my system restore files so that went too. since I cant get this program to work well with jaws I'm kind of working blind here. (sorry for the pun). but if Steve can get sighted help I do believe it will clear out the infection on his computer. To go back to what you said in the below message, yes, I google all error messages as I like to know what the so called problem is and how to remove it etc. thanks for the suggestion though. Re: [Blind-Computing] Backing Up Files
hi Gerald when I got my computer two years ago, after installing on first boot up I was asked if I wanted to create a backup CD. I cant remember now what I used, think it was a utility from HP as my computer is a HP pavilion. I've just looked in my programs menu and cant see a utility, but am pretty certain that's what I used. it is on two CD's and I really should have created new backup disks when I re installed the operating system couple weeks back. ah well...this pc has a failing unknown ailment any way. sorry I'm not much help there. ah, I see, so it kind of replaces the one that is already there with say new additions, programs or settings you installed after initial installation? wonder if that would have jaws in there too, might be handy for future restorations. what I mean is, I have separate partition on my drive which is called restore. although I've restored my drive I actually used the CD I burnt when I first purchased the pc two years ago. maybe I should have tried that drive first but then I was changing the hard drive to a new one. shame I didn't know about that when I re installed my OS couple weeks back. ah, always wiser after the fact *smiles* Elaine - Original Message - From: Rogelio Terrazas rogelio.terra...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, April 24, 2009 3:55 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Backing Up Files No you don't. Re: [Blind-Computing] What is keyboard equivalent for Drag Drop
Hi Jacob I had to drag and drop for my college course, trust me, if jaws doesn't speak while dragging, you haven't a clue where you are or even where the location is to where you are dragging to. I accidentally found out if you substitute the right mouse button instead of the left, jaws actually seeks as you drag. so it is the same combination of jaws key plus left or right mouse button, and or, jaws key, ctrl and right or left mouse button. this is a bit of trial and error and to be quite honest, a pain and very frustrating to say the least. the right mouse button is the star, to the left of the jaws cursor, just in case you didn't know. *smiles* Thanks Elaine - Original Message - From: Jacob Kruger jac...@iburst.co.za To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, March 27, 2009 9:28 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] What is keyboard equivalent for Drag Drop I think the second keystroke combination bypasses needing to use the jaws cursor as such. Once pressed, the JAWS cursor can be moved with the arrow keys. JAWS will not speak until INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH is pressed again to unlock the left mouse button. This command can be used to drag items from one location and drop them in another. Apart from that bit of info, the following is actually the keystroke they say you should use: Drag and Drop CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH I think it automatically starts dragging whatever you're currently focused on, and then when you're in the place you want it to go to, you hit it again, and it'll drag/drop that object/item there. Try turning on your keyboard help using jaws key + number row 1, and hit that key combo twice and it'll give you a bit of better description. This is all assuming you're using a new enough version of jaws. Re: [Blind-Computing] a good antispyware program
Hi Rosemarie I use malwarebytes, super anti spyware and spybot for good measure. they are speech friendly, although with superanti spyware you might need help with the inserting the registration details if you decide to purchase it. Malwarebytes is also free although you can decide to purchase the updates, then it all becomes automatic process. the program will remove any files it finds regardless of you purchasing the updates. Re: [Blind-Computing] Demonoid accessible?
hi I registered with them when they had open invitations, don't remember any problems with that. I am surprised you are having problems with the voice capture as once you register, about every 4 or maybe 5th time you download a link it goes to that voice capture. I've never had any problems with that neither as I download the file and I play it through winamp. once you input the text in to the box it then allows you to download the file. just thought I'd mention this. Re: [Blind-Computing] Window Eyes Dilemma
wow? you get jaws etc free? I'm obviously in the wrong country as over here, in the UK, we have to purchase our own computers and accessible software. Unless you wish to go cap in hand to a charity that is. Some people really are lucky. Why do you need both JAWS and Window Eyes on the same system? I am surprised that a state rehab agency would spend almost $2000 of taxpayer money on two screen readers for the same system, when one would be perfectly adequate. No wonder there's an economic crisis in this country. If you need a back-up screen reader to either JAWS or Window Eyes, you might consider NVDA, which is free and pretty usable. Gerald - Original Message - From: Mauricio Molina mauriciohmol...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, February 18, 2009 10:43 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] Window Eyes Dilemma Hello To All, Obviously, I was hoping someone on this list might be able to assist me. I am currently setting up a brand new Dell Optiplex Desktop system. It is a Vista Home Premium 32 bit system and as of yet, there is no antivirus installed. I have also disabled UAC until I get all the software installed. And therein lies the rub: I've successfully installed JAWS 10, MAGic 11, and ZoomText 9.4, but when I tried installing Window Eyes 7.01, there is some sort of conflict. By the way, this is not my system, the State rehabilitation agency purchased it for one of their consumers and I am simply expected to set it up. I admit I am a JAWS user so I enlisted Window Eyes tech support to assist me in the installation. One of their agents, whose name I prefer not to mention, helped me make the correct choices during the installation process. Yet after the installation was complete and the system was rebooted, all there was on the screen was black with the white mouse pointer in the center of the screen. I've already stated that I am a JAWS user so to say that I am visually impaired would be redundant. Still, I have enough remaining vision to make the previous observation. When I asked the GW Micro tech support to comment on the problem, the only thing he had to offer was that it may be a video driver issue and the drivers may need to be updated. I do not understand how this could be the case as the system is brand spanking new with an upgraded ATI HD 2400 Pro Graphics card. I asked whether there were any known issues with having so many other assistive technologies installed on one computer or if there was a particular order in which they needed to be installed. The answer was no to both questions. Fortunately, before installing any software, I create System Restore points. So, with sighted assistance, I booted into safe mode and put the system back to before the Window Eyes installation and all was well. I then called GW Micro tech support again and spoke with another tech. I told him of my experience and all he had to add was that there was a conflict. Duh! Unfortunately, they offered no further assistance. So, what I would like to know is, does anyone have any ideas of which course of action I should follow next. I may, just for the heck of it, update the graphics card driver, but if that does not work, what then? In fact, I have never yet had to update a video card driver so I am not even sure of the process though I imagine I can figure that one out. But if anyone would like to provide some advice, I would be very grateful. Sorry for the long post. Re: [Blind-Computing] Problems Highlighting, Copying and Pasting Text
Hi Ryan Thanks for this, I feel so stupid as this one should have occurred to me, I've seen it often enough. *smiles* I was experiencing something similar to Victor, as when I was copying any text from web pages, sometimes even file names, jaws would copy the word plus half of the rest. weird. Good tip to keep handy though. Thanks Elaine - Original Message - From: Ryan MacIsaac rmi...@eastlink.ca To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Monday, February 16, 2009 2:59 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Problems Highlighting,Copying and Pasting Text This problem is easily corrected. With Jaws 9 and 10, when you copy something from the web, the default is that all formatting from the original web page is retained. Depending on what you paste the selected text into, this may cause a problem. To change this, you need to open the Jaws verbosity options tree view while in your web browser and change the select and copy option. To accomplish this, do the following: 1. Open your web browser. 2. Press the Jaws key plus V to open the new tree view for Jaws options. 3. Press the down arrow key to find the option for select and copy. This is found under the virtual cursor options. You should have to press the down arrow key three or four times to find this option. 4. When you find the select and copy option, you can press the tab key to move to the help window. Use the say all command to read the help information for the select and copy option. 5. Use the shift tab key to move back to the tree view. Press the space bar to change the options for the select and copy option. To make the option work the way it did in earlier versions of Jaws where no special formatting from the web page is copied, select the from virtual cursor option. 6. Close the Jaws verbosity options window. This change is permanent and remains in effect even if you shutdown Jaws or your computer. The full content option is the default in Jaws 9 and 10 - this is what retains all formatting when copying text from a web page. I hope this helps, Ryan -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Victor Sent: Monday, February 16, 2009 12:43 AM To: blind Computing Subject: [Blind-Computing] Problems Highlighting, Copying and Pasting Text Hi Folks, Like that other person who was having trouble, quite often, in fact, this happens all the time, when I go to copy text from a web page into a document, notepad, WordPad or e-mail, I get some kind of code instead of the text I've highlighted, copied and pasted. This is getting fairly troublesome, as I often do this type of copying and pasting to help friends with problems they may have, and where I find a relevant bit of text on the net that can help them. I'm using Jaws 10, latest build, Windows XP, Word 2003 and Outlook Express 6. As far as I know, all of my settings are configured properly with the configuration manager under highlighting options, and so I'm at a loss to understand why this is. I also have a problem where I am composing an e-mail, and, when I press the down arrow in combination with the shift key to select the text, the line will select, however, half of the words seem to be selected, as opposed to the word. I mean it's like that function, called smart highlighting or something like that, is turned off. I've also come across a time or two, where I want to highlight a few words in an e-mail message, whether reading to copy to another message, or just composing the message for copying and pasting to a spot further down in the message, or what ever, where, instead of the whole word being selected only, the entire word is selected, right along with half, or a few letters of the next word. Can anyone help me with this. Sorry for the long message, but I wasn't sure if those two things below were significant or not. Thanks all. [Blind-Computing] Accessible program to test har drive
Hi Folks does anyone know if there is a tool to test hard drives, that is accessible? I have reasons to think my drive is dieing as I've just completed a re format to find my pc keeps crashing. most of the time I'm not running anything, or maybe one program like winamp. Although do have programs in the background such as Avast, super anti spyware and the like. I know it's not memory related as I've 4 gig. my pc makes a beeping noise which increases speed then it kind of goes in to a squeal and locks up. when it first did this after the re install, jaws crashed, then when I rebooted jaws crashed again. it kept doing this. so I updated jaws. I thought it was jaws having the issue but now it crashes with other programs such as Outlook express. to make matters worse, this is a random thing. I cant duplicate the crash. I'm running xp with jaws 9. sorry I forgot to mention this above. any way, if anyone could help I'd appreciate it. I've run all the various tests but nothing is indicating the drive is about to die.
