Re: [Blind-Computing] transfer downloaded bard book to cartridge

2013-05-26 Thread Gerald Levy

I transfer books from my computer to my flash drive in one of two ways. If
I need to transfer only one saved book, I highlight it in my saved books
folder, launch the file menu and select the extract all option to unzip the
file, Then delete the zip file, cut the unzipped file to the clipboard and
paste it to my flash drive. If I want to transfer multiple books to my
flash drive at the same time, I use the free Humanware Companion program,
which will transfer a whole bunch of books to the flash drive and delete the
old books on the flash drive in one fell swoop with just a few keystrokes in
its JAWS accessible interface. You can download the Humanware Companion at:

I want to ask anyone who downloads books from the bard site, and then
transfers them to a cartridge, if they do it like I do?
after the book is downloaded to my default win 7 download folder, I cut it
to a folder in documents I have for bard books, which has about 12 books
in it, and when I want to put this book on my cartridge, I open the zipped
book, from the bard folder, copy the files, and then paste them to a
folder, select the files, applications key to send to, and up to
removeable. is this how you do it?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Tracking packages using FedEx?

2013-04-15 Thread Gerald Levy

I track Fedex and UPS packages all the time using IE 8 with JAWS 9 and have
no problem. All I do is copy and paste the tracking number from my email
order confirmation into the Google search field, and get back the Fedex or
UPS shipment tracking page, which lists the up-to-date status and tracking
history of my shipment. I simply plug in the term deliv into the JAWS
Find command to get the delivery date for my shipment. That's all there is
to it.

Re: [Blind-Computing] OpenBook 9 Printing Envelopes With Word 2007

2013-04-06 Thread Gerald Levy

Actually, I have experienced the same problem myself using Open Book 7.0.2.
I notice that addresses, regardless of whether they are printed on an
envelope or at the top of a letter are read by Open Book as a single line
rather than separate lines. I am not aware of any setting that can be
changed to correct this behavior. As long as you hit the Enter key after you
type each line of the address, it should print correctly.

OpenBook has reported all my efforts printing the envelopes with the

I think there is some OpenBook setting I need to adjust and tried

Install a little utility called Hot Key Detective, which will list all the
hot keys on your computer. You can find it on the JAWS Users programs page.
If you have a hot key for Notepad, it should be listed. You can then focus
on it an tab to the change key button which will allow you to delete or

[Blind-Computing] Removing Java From XP Computer?

2013-01-11 Thread Gerald Levy

I have the latest version of Java, version 10, installed on my XP Pro computer,
but there has been a lot of buzz lately that it is still highly vulnerable to
malicious attacks and therefore should be disabled or removed. So I'm
wondering: is Java really necessary at all? Is it safe to completely remove
it? Or should I keep it and just disable it on the Manage Add-Ons dialog of
the Options submenu of the IE 8 Tools menu? According to some tech experts,
disabling Java this way may not completely disable it and may still leave your
computer vulnerable unless you perform some additional registry tweaks, which I
don't feel comfortable doing. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

[Blind-Computing] Firefox Full Version vs. Firefox Portable Version

saved the portable version of Firefox 18.0 which I want to install so that I
can keep Firefox 3.6 full intact in case I encounter any accessibility or JAWS

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Problems with Ebay and Facebook

Over the past several months, I've been having major problems with
Ebay. I've noticed that the combo boxes for sorting items, as well as
the edit boxes for choosing price, and the regular links for things
like buy it now, the various categories, location, etc. have all
become inaccessible. They now look like a combination of links and
check boxes, which do nothing when I click on them. I've tried both
Firefox, which is my main browser, and Internet Explorer. Sometimes,
they work properly, but now, neither one is working, and these
problems appear on both browsers, where previously, I was able to use
IE for the purpose. Firefox also started acting normally, a few days
ago, but has now resumed this strange look. The ad-ons manager in
Firefox has also become inaccessible.

I also have to use the mobile version of Facebook with both browsers,
since it's very difficult to use the main site on Firefox and
virtually impossible with IE. When I get e-mails of notifications
from Facebook, they all use the www. version of pages. But I can't
get to the address with IE, as I can with Firefox, in order to edit it
to m. so that I can view things on the mobile site. I also can't
update IE, because I'm using Windows XP, and 7 is the last version
that will work with my os! So basically, I'm left with only a few
options.
1. Change to a version of Windows which I have no idea how to use, and
no desire to learn, one which is far more complicated than what I
already have.
2. Buy another Mac (which is ridiculously expensive) so that I can
upgrade to Mountain Lion, or buy more memory for my Macbook so I can
upgrade to Lion. Both have better navigational features than Snow
Leopard, but I'm not a huge fan of the Mac. Please do not suggest to
me that I buy an iOS device. I don't like touch screens and the like,
nor do I wish to change to Linux.
3. Continue using Firefox and uninstall/reinstall it every time Ebay
starts acting up, hoping that will fix the problem (it didn't today),
or I don't like an add-on and need to delete it, or do a system
restore each time.
4. Wait for my MS-DOS 7.10 machine, which should be coming soon. I've
heard that these sites are accessible with DOS browsers.

For the record, I use NVDA as my screenreader. Has anyone else
experienced these problems? If so, what solutions have you found?
This is really upsetting me! What's worse is that both Ebay and
Facebook have wonderfully accessible mobile pages, but they don't have
many of the basic features of their main sites.

Thanks,
Eleni

[Blind-Computing] Cyber Monday Shopping Problems on Tiger Direct Site

2012-11-26 Thread Gerald Levy

This being Cyber Monday, I wanted to take advantage of the low prices. One of
the items I was interested in was a Samsung 32 inch LED TV I attempted to
purchase from Tiger Direct. I visited tigerdirect.com, created an account and
added the TV to my shopping cart without any problem , but when I clicked on
the secure check out button, I got the dreaded Internet Explorer cannot
display the web page error. So I removed the TV from my shopping cart and
started over, but once again, when I clicked on the secure check out button, I
got the same error, using IE 8 with XP Pro and JAWS 9. I tried buying a
different TV with the same result. I emptied my shopping cart and tried again
using Firefox 3.6. This time, when I tried to click on the add to shopping
cart button to add the Samsung TV to my shopping cart, nothing happened. Both
TV's were listed as being in stock, so I don't understand why I should have
encountered trouble completing my purchase. I finally gave up in frustration
with tigerdirect.com, and wound up purchasing the Samsung TV from another site
for the same price without any difficulty. Does anyone have any idea why I
encountered trouble with the Tiger Direct site? Thanks.

2012-11-15 Thread Gerald Levy

I agree with you 100%. I'm sick and tired of planned obsolenscence and
products that are built to break down so that you will discard them and buy
new ones. I'm so old fashioned that I still use a vintage Western Electric
rotary telephone from the 1960's on one of my land line extensions whose
sound quality is superior to the $10 disposable electronic crap that passes
for a telephone these days. And if you thought Windows Vista was a disaster,
it looks like Windows 8 could turn out to be an even bigger nightmare for
MS. Yesterday, the MS executive who was largely responsible for the
development of Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 announced his resignation, no
doubt to get out before the you know what hits the fan. Win 8 has received
a lukewarm reception by many business users who are apparently in no great
rush to upgrade, and compatibility problems with some older programs have
been reported. So MS's strategy to create a single operating system that
will work with all devices from desktop PC's to tablets and smart phones
could backfire big time. That's why I plan to stick with trusty old XP as
long as I can.

[Blind-Computing] New Captcha-Solving Service for Blind Computer Users

2012-09-13 Thread Gerald Levy

A new captcha solving service designed expressly for blind computer users has
just been launched. Called ZCaptcha, it sounds similar to the defunct Solona

Re: [Blind-Computing] New Captcha-Solving Service for BlindComputerUsers

2012-09-13 Thread Gerald Levy

Unfortunately, the use of image captcha is so widespread and firmly
entrenched, that it will probably never be completely replaced with a more
blind-friendly alternative. You can whine all you want about the unfairness
of being charged for a service that sighted folks take for granted, but in
the end, you will still have to solve captchas on many sites in order to
register or create an account. So unless you use Webvisum with Firefox,
which doesn't always work, or pay for a service like ZCaptcha, you will need
sighted help to solve captchas. That's just the way it is. Get over it.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Captcha and Screen Reader

2012-09-13 Thread Gerald Levy

The way ZCaptcha works is that you have to register with them and add at
least $5 to your account using Paypal before you can submit your first
captcha for decoding. You will then be charged 21 cents each time you
submit a captcha. This seems reasonable enough. But what if ZCaptcha for
some reason is unable to successfully solve the captcha you have submitted.
Will they still deduct 21 cents from your account. And what if ZCaptcha
suddenly goes belly up without notice like Solona. Will you lose the
remaining money in your account. So proceed with caution.

You claim that you were able to squeeze 29 gb of data onto two DVD's. How
did you accomplish this amazing feat? A standard single-layer, single-sided
DVD can store approximately 4.7 gb of data, while a single-layer,
double-sided DVD can store 9.4 gb of data. So assuming you used two
single-layer, double-sided DVD's, you could only store a total of about 19
gb of data. Did you use some hard-to-find double-layer, double-sided DVD's,
which can hold about 18.5 gb each? Or did you perhaps use blue ray disks,
which have a much higher storage capacity than standard DVD's, but are much
more expensive and thus not really practical for frequent image backups? Or
is there some magical technique for cramming more data onto a DVD than it
can physically store? Just curious.

So let me see if I understand. You are saying that the size of the
partition you backed up was 29gb, but using the maximum compression option
of Image for Windows, you were able to fit it onto two single-sided DVD's,
which have a total storage capacity of about 9.4 gb. Do I have this right?

I had only used single-layer, single-sided CD-R's for recording in the
faulty drive, so it must have gone bad for some other reason such as dirt
accumulation on the laser lens or just old age. He told me that it is not
uncommon for a DVD drive to start experiencing tracking problems when it is
four or five years old. Apparently, DVD drive reliability declines with
age, so there is no guarantee that an image backup created on a DVD drive
that is a few years old will be later recognized or read successfully by
that drive , especially if double-layer disks are used.

I don't think the bad DVD drive was due to the use of inferior quality
materials. My Dell workstation is actually a commercial grade PC, so if
anything, the original DVD drive was probably of higher quality and more
robust than the DVD drives that come with typical laptop and home desktop
PC's. As for creating image backups of my system, I alternately use Paragon
Disk Backup and Macrium Reflect every two weeks, both of which are JAWS
accessible for the backup phase but require sighted help to perform the
system recovery from an external hard drive using a rescue CD.

HI Gerald and others,

Do not, absolutely do not rely on a single copy of anything! Especially a
hard drive image burned to optical media such as DVD.

I've been using Image for Windows for some time now (Leo Laporte's
security

guru suggestion), and the very few times I've used the DVD recovery media
I've noticed odd results.

The first time something happened where my Dell desktop would take 5
minutes

to boot. The only thing different before and after this quirk was that I
used my Image for Windows recovery DVDs. I think there might be an issue
in
regards to the optical nature and structure of a DVD verses the structure
of

a magnetic hard drive. I could not continue suffering through that long
bootup process, so I had my husband reformat and reinstall Windows from
scratch. After that incident, I thought it better to take images to
external

hard drives, which is a faster process, and the bit for bit backup is much
more likely to be reproduced accurately when saving the image to a similar
medium.

One day when I had to restore my netbook, the process of recovering from a
burned image from an external hard drive was flawless, and luckily the
long
bootup issue did not happen. From that day on, I create backups to
external

hard drives every couple of weeks, burn images to DVD every month, and use
synctoy weekly.

Gerald's problem is easy to solve, simply take the burned DVD image, use
another drive (many computers nowadays have multiple drives), and use
Image
for Windows to yank a file. Image for windows allows the user to go into
an

image and pull needed files if necessary.

It is also likely that Gerald's bad drive is due to inferior products big
name manufacturers put in their desktops. Profit margin is so razor thin
that manufacturers will skimp wherever they can find an opportunity. I had
an aftermarket Sony burner in my Dell for about 7 years without the
slightest issue. Of course those unknowable reasons why things break
cannot

be ruled out.

[Blind-Computing] Trouble With CD/DVD Drive On My PC

2012-08-12 Thread Gerald Levy

Hi list. Lately, I have been experiencing trouble with the CD/DVD drive built
into my Dell Precision workstation running XP Pro. When I insert a standard
prerecorded audio CD into the disk tray and close it, it takes a long time,
almost two minutes, before it is finally recognized and the option to play it
with Windows Media Player comes up. When I start pplaying the disk, it usually
, but not always , skips, even after I have cleaned it with a cleaning cloth.
The same disk plays fine on my audio system DVD player. Some prerecorded audio
CD's do play continuously without skipping on the built-in CD/DVD drive. But
when I insert audio CD-R's that I had previously recorded on this drive, they
are not recognized. So most prerecorded CD's will play, albeit with occasional
skipping on some disks, but CD-R's that had been previously recorded on this
computer are not even recognized and thus won't play. Does this behavior
indicate that the CD/DVD drive is defective and should be replaced? My
workstation is five years old but is still covered by an extended warranty
through next month, so I'm wondering whether I should contact Dell and have
them repair or replace the faulty DVD drive while I still can . I am reluctant
to try one of those laser lens cleaning disks for fear of causing more damage
and voiding the warranty, Thanks for any advice.

Re: [Blind-Computing] webvisum again

2012-06-22 Thread Gerald Levy

In XP, the Hosts file is located under C:\I386, not under Drivers/Etc. I
verified this on my XP Pro computer by using Everything Search to locate all
files named Hosts on my computer. The only Hosts file on my computer that
does not contain an extension after Hosts is the Hosts file located under
I386. I'm pretty sure this is the correct file because it contains DNS
addresses. So XP users may need to look under I386 to find the Hosts file
to be modified with the additional line of text to make Webvisum work.

The file this post is referring to is there, but may not be enabled by
default, as Windows System files are normally hidden.

While in the ETC folder, go to your tools menu, then up arrow to folder
options and press enter.

Once in the dialog box to set folder options, control+tab to the view
menu,

then arrow down to the following and make sure to set them appropriately:

Display the contents of system folders. Make sure this setting is set to
on.

Show hidden files and folders. Make sure this setting is set to on.

Hide Protected operating system files. Make sure this line is set to
off.

Once these settings are changed, tab to the apply button, then shift+tab
back to the ok button, and the file may now show up.

Remember that this file does not have an extension to it, and so Windows
may

not know what program to use to open it.

Don't make the mistake of opening one of the other host file names, as the
post clearly says that the Hosts file it's referring to has no extension.

In any case, once you press enter on it, a dialog box will pop up asking
you

what program you wish to use to open the selected file. If you land in a
dialog box with a list of programs installed on your computer, skip the
next

paragraph and go directly to the paragraph following.

If a list of programs on your computer does not appear, and you see the
line, Use the web service to locate the appropriate program, uncheck
that

box by arrowing down to select the program from a list of programs on your
computer and press enter.

In the proceeding dialog box, or if you landed here automatically and were
not given the option to use the web service to search for the program, tab
to the list of programs, though it should land you on the list of programs
automatically and press the letter N for notepad. Once selected, press
the enter key, and the file will open up.

There shouldn't be too much information within that text file, but suffice
it to say, press control+end to go to the bottom of the text file, and
paste

in the information in the post.

Make sure to save the text file with control+S before you close the text
file, or the settings will not take effect.

Hope this helps.

[Blind-Computing] Hurray! Webvisum is Back!

2012-06-22 Thread Gerald Levy

Great news, gang. I am extremely happy to report that Webvisum is up and
running again. It's web site is back, and when you launch Firefox, you should
hear the normal welcome message, Alert, you are logged on to Webvisum. I
verified that it works by submitting an image captcha from a test page, and
Webvisum successfully decoded it. So it is not necessary to locate and modify
the Hosts file to get it to work. Hopefully, Webvisum will continue to
function for a long time to come. But if it ever does go away for good, at
least it is reassuring to know that there are potential alternatives available
like Rumola and Captcha Monster.

I checked the Rumola site, but it is very vague about how it works and there
is no pricing information, which makes me a little leery. Captcha Monster,
which sounds like a similar image-captcha solving Firefox add-on costs $2.95
per month for the basic plan which lets you solve up to 60 captchas, and
seems to at least have some testamonials to support it. Maybe one of the

[Blind-Computing] What Happened to Webvisum?

2012-06-20 Thread Gerald Levy

This morning, when I launched Firefox 3.6, instead of the familiar Alert, you
are logged on to Webvisum welcome message, I got a server connection error. So
I visited a web page that contains an image captcha, but when I attempted to
submit it to Webvisum for decoding by pressing Alt-Control-numrow 6, nothing
happened. And the solve captcha option was not available on the context menu
either. I visited www.webvisum.com, and was dismayed by the following message:

NOTICE: This domain name expired on 06/19/2012 and is pending renewal or
deletion.

This web page is parked FREE, courtesy of GoDaddy.com

I don't know much about Go Daddy, but I think it is a web hosting service. From
the message, it sounds like Webvisum's domain name expired yesterday, and the
Webvisum site is apparently gone. I certainly hope that this isn't the case,
and that this is just a temporary glitch. But what if Webvisum is really gone
for good? Are we blind users going to be forced to rely on sighted help from
now on to solve image captchas? Or will we have to struggle with
incomprehensible audio captchas that don't work most of the time? Does anyone
know what happened to Webvisum? Thanks.

[Blind-Computing] MSE Behaving Strangely

2012-05-27 Thread Gerald Levy

This sounds like a blooper from the back bage of Consumer Reports. Checking my
System Tray this morning , I noticed that my icon for MSE 4.0 stated PC status
: potentially unprotected. So I opened MSE and examined the Home tab using
the JAWS cursor, and here's what it looked like:

graphic 399 Microsoft Security Essentials
You haven't run a scan on your PC for a while. This could put your PC at risk.
Scan options:
Quick
Full
Custom
Real-time protection: On
Virus and spyware definitions: Up to date Scan now
Scan details
Scheduled scan: Daily around 11:00 AM (Quick scan) Change my scan schedule
Last scan: 5/26/2012 at 10:41 AM (Quick scan)

As you can see, the page clearly states that MSE performed a quick scan
yesterday, 5/26, at 10:41AM, yet the message at the top of the page states that
myPC might be at risk because I haven't run a scan for a while. What the heck
is going on? Is this a bug in MSE, or MS's idea of a practical joke? This has
been happening about twice a week, so I just ignore the System Tray warning.
Has anyone else experience this behavior with MSE 4.0?

[Blind-Computing] Removing Malware Threats Detected By Super Anti Spyware

2012-05-01 Thread Gerald Levy

Hi guys. Well, it was bound to happen. I have been using Super Anti Spyware
4.56 free edition successfully for a long time, but suddenly, it stopped
updating the database definitions a few weeks ago. So today I updated to SAS
5.0 free dition, the latest version, and, of course, it is much less JAWS
friendly than its predecessor. Using the JAWS cursor with JAWS 13, I was able
to update the database definitions in this new version of SAS and then run a
quick scan. When the scan finished, the results page showed that SAS had
detected two potentially harmful threats, and recommended that they be removed
immediately from my computer. But using the JAWS cursor, I could not find
these threats listed anywhere on the results page, nor could I find any check
boxes to select them for removal. Clicking on the Remove Threats button at the
bottom of the page brought up a warning that no threats had been selected for
removal, but do I want to continue anyway. Clicking on the No button brought
me back to the results page where I still could not find the detected threats
and select them for removal. This was never a problem with the earlier version
of SAS. Can anyone explain how to find and select malware threats detected by
SAS 5.0? Or is SAS now another one of those programs that has become unusable
with JAWS? Thanks for any help.

[Blind-Computing] Warning: DNS Changer Virus Could Block Your Computer From Accessing the Internet

2012-04-24 Thread Gerald Levy

Hi list. There has been a lot of buzz lately about a virus called DNS Changer
that may have infected thousands of computers and potentially prevent them from
accessing the Internet. Visit the Ask Bob Rankin web site below for
information about this malware threat, how to test your computer to determine
whether you have been infected and how to get rid of it if you have. I clicked
on the link given on this site for testing whether my computer was infected,
and thankfully, the test page I was taken to was JAWS accessible and reported
that my computer was clean. This is not a hoax but a real threat that should
be taken very seriously.

[Blind-Computing] FS Releases Improved OCR Engine for JAWS and Open Book

2012-04-01 Thread Gerald Levy

For Immediate Release:

Freedom Scientific Releases New and Improved OCR Recognition Software for JAWS
and OpenBook

Today, Freedom Scientific, one of the world's leading screen reading and
blindness product makers, has just recently developed and released a new
breakthrough in its line of products of assistive technology for blind and
visually impaired computer users.

Have you ever wanted to take OpenBook® with you at all times anywhere you can
possibly go with it? Or even better, have you always wanted to be able to pick
up a handwritten note on a piece of paper and be able to read it instantly just
like anybody else? Or maybe you are one of those frustrated students that are
inundated with printed or handwritten material that you can't read in or out of
a classroom setting and you have to wait even hours or days for somebody to
read to you. Maybe you are at a conference, you are given a business card or a
simple handout that is important, and you need to fill out or read along?

Well, wish and wonder no more! Freedom Scientific now has the solution!

Due to popular demand, and numerous emails and feedback requests from our
users, Freedom Scientific has decided to step forward.

We have released a new, updated, and improved OCR recognition engine for both,
our Openbook® and JAWS® products. This bran new release includes many new
features, which include, but not limited to:

* The ability to recognize smaller type font and better recognition of columns
in sophisticated tables, which can easily be confusing to read.
* The ability to recognize print on smaller pieces of print paper, such as note
slips or contact cards on the spot, with better print focus and not the scanner
bed or camera.
* Finally, the ability to recognize handwriting with about 85-90% accuracy!

Yes, that's right! Our new OCR engine has built-in support for handwriting
recognition. That means that you can either scan or place a handwritten note
from a co-worker, a spouse, or from a door, into your camera or scanner of your
choice, and Openbook® will automatically recognize it and be able to read it
with speech and / or Braille output from your preferred synthesizer or Braille
display! Not only this. You can open a .pdf, .jpg, or .png image that someone
sent you with handwriting over the email on your computer, perform the OCR
recognition command (JAWS 13 and later only), and bingo! You will hear the
handwriting being spoken out to you or sent to your Braille display. Please
note that these new features offered by this improved version of the OCR engine
for JAWS® or OpenBook® software are only compatible with Openbook versions
later than 8.0 and JAWS version 13.0 or later. Please note users of JAWS
earlier than 13.0, we will release a version of the new OCR engine that we
released with JAWS 13.0 later this month, with the same features as the ones
offered now, so you aren't left out on these new features! This update to the
OCR engine can work with both 32- and 64-bit operating systems.

Want some even more awesome news from our OpenBook® development team? We have
released OpenBook Mobile®, a scanning and reading solution app for your iOS
device! This means that you can use our popular scanning and reading solution
right from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, using VoiceOver and the camera of
your device! Yes, that's right, OpenBook® is going mobile, and you will be able
to take it anywhere you go that you find printed material that you cannot read.
You will be able to go on a trip, be given an airport boarding pass, and you
will no longer need sighted assistance to see whether your plane was gone
before you knew it, or to see your flight information. You will be able to go
to a church service and be able to access printed booklets of hymns or group
prayers easily and independently without requesting sighted help. Even more
fantastic, you will be able to walk into a classroom door that appears to have
no one waiting with you, bump into a little sticky note with your finger below
or above the Braille marking of the classroom number, and not have to wait so
many hours and precious study time trying to find out if the instructor
canceled the class or whatever other scheduling conflict that might have
occurred with that instructor. If you have an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, you
will get it out, snap a photo of that little sticky note, and you will be able
to find out what's wrong quickly, independently and immediately with the
built-in handwriting recognition of the OCR engine for OpenBook Mobile®! It's
so easy!

Currently, OpenBook Mobile® for iOS platforms is available at the Apple iTunes
store and it costs $2.99. This app is designed to fit any budget. So, what are
you waiting for? Purchase your OpenBook Mobile® app for your iPhone / iPod /
iPad now, and let your future shine today! The power of technology and
handwriting is in your hands,

Hi Gerald,
I wasn't sure what it was called, but it is:
SmartScreen Filter
From the Internet Explorer 8 Help Files:

How does SmartScreen Filter help protect my computer from malicious or
phishing websites?

Microsoft SmartScreen Filter is a feature in Internet Explorer that helps
detect phishing websites and websites that distribute malicious software
(also
known as malware). Phishing websites are fraudulent sites that impersonate
trusted or known websites to trick computer users into revealing personal
or
financial information. Malware websites distribute software that can
attack

your computer or steal your personal information.

While you browse the web, SmartScreen Filter runs in the background and
(with your consent) sends the web addresses of the sites you are visiting
to

the
Microsoft SmartScreen service to be compared against lists of known
phishing

and malware sites. If SmartScreen Filter discovers that a website you're
visiting
is on the list of known malware or phishing sites, Internet Explorer will
display a blocking webpage and the Address bar will appear in red. From
the

blocking
page, you can choose to bypass the blocked website and go to your home
page

instead, or you can continue to the blocked website, though this is not
recommended.
If you decide to continue to the blocked website, the Address bar will
continue to appear in red.

To protect your privacy, information that is submitted to the SmartScreen
web service is transmitted in encrypted format over HTTPS. This
information

is
not stored with your IP address or other personally identifiable
information, and will not be used to identify, contact, or provide
advertising to you

More information on this and other security features can be found in the
Help Topics for Internet Explorer.

[Blind-Computing] Strange MSE Error Message

2012-02-12 Thread Gerald Levy

Happy Lincoln's Birthday, listers. I have been using Microsoft Security
Essentials on my XP Pro machine for over two years. This morning, when I
checked my System Tray, the MSE icon read Computer Potentially Unprotected.
So I checked the MSE Home tab using the JAWS cursor and noticed a message
claiming that I had not run a scan in a while and hence my computer might be at
risk. But scrolling down to the bottom of the page, there was another message
confirming that a quick scan had indeed been performed yesterday at about
11:00AM, as it is every day, because I have MSE set to perform a quick scan on
a daily basis. Any idea why MSE would issue a message that I haven't performed
a scan in a while, when, in fact, I performed a scan yesterday? This doesn't
make any sense. My malware definitions are up to date according to the
information on the Update tab. Thanks for any feedback.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Question about all in 1 laser printers

The problem with many newer all-in-one printers is that they use an LCD
display screen for option selection that is not accessible. And many
printers don't even have a toggle power switch anymore, just a button with
an LED indicator so it can be difficult to determine whether the printer is
on or off without listening for internal noise . So shop carefully.

Unfortunately Canon USA told me that print head for this particular model

Secondly, I am currently using OmniPage 15 for all my scanning. Does

with Firefox's ambitious release schedule. Firefox 11 is scheduled for
release in the near future and Firefox 12 is not far behind.

Hi again

Although you write that Webvisum is alive, and works with the latest
version

of Firefox. As I wrote earlier, I can well fear the day the servers behind
the project is not being maintained, thereby Webvisum also shall suffer
death. What can we so do if we will have help to solve a captcha?

Since the people behind Webvisum seems to have disappeared, it seems a bit
like that they will let the project suffer death when servers once will
not
work anymore. I tried to write to them about the problem with their
mailing

list before Christmas 2011, but got only an automated message back from my
internet provider stating that their server was not working.

Unfortunately it is a bit annoying. Webvisum still works fine, but I want
to

be assured that such a good project still being maintained.

Anders

Solona closed down because its creator became very ill about two years ago
and could no longer continue running it. Webvisum is alive and well and
works with the latest version of Firefox.

2012-01-11 Thread Gerald Levy

Even if you don't want to use Firefox as your default browser, it may still
be a good idea to download it just for its captcha-solving feature.
Unfortunately, now that Solona is gone, Firefox with Webvisum is the only
viable captcha-solveing solution available if you don't have sighted help on

Re: [Blind-Computing] NLS Player Battery

2012-01-08 Thread Gerald Levy

Hi Mike,

When the battery is fully charged, the player should announce the charge
time as greater than 24 hours, so it sounds like your player may be a lemon.
The best thing to do is to contact your network library and exchange it for
another player. I also suggest joining the BARD Talk mailing list which is
dedicated to the discussion of the DTB player and other topics related to
the BARD program. There are some pretty knowledgeable members on this list
who may be able to offer a more comprehensive explanation of your battery
problem than I can. To subscribe, send a blank message to the following

Hi All,

I have the NLS Advanced player the battery doesn't seem to be taking a

that
there is less than 1 hour of battery life left. This is only the 2nd or
3rd

anywhere close to how many times the battery pack can be recharged. In

600

To my knowledge, NVDA has no equivalent to the JAWS cursor. But you can
access hidden objects with a series of NVDA commands. To learn more about
object navigation in NVDA, refer to sections 6.4 and 6.5 of the NVDA User
Guide, the link for which can be found on the NVDA Help menu. Or perhaps
you should consider joining the NVDA Support list whose members may be more

None of the mainstream OCR programs like ABBYY Fine Reader or Reading Made

Re: [Blind-Computing] Unable to Access Target.com

2011-12-23 Thread Gerald Levy

You would think so, but Verizon seems to work in mysterious ways. Someone
on another list provided the address of Target's mobile site
(http://sites.target.com/site/en/spot/mobile.jsp), which I am able to access
just fine with IE 8. So now I can access the mobile Target site, but not
the regular site. Very strange.

luck. I was finally able to access it successfully using

Gotcha. Coincidently, yesterday, I somehow lost my Start menu icons except
for all programs and could not figure out how to get them back. Everything
was fine when I booted up in the morning, but when I tried to shut down my
computer for the night with Windows key-U-U, I discovered that my Start menu
icons, including Control Panel, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and
about ten others had disappeared, leaving only All Programs. So I performed
a system restore to the previous day, and the Start menu was restored to
normal. I'm using the XP Start menu, which explains the absence of a
Settings icon. But if I ever lose my Start menu again, at least I know now
that I can access the Control Panel through the Run dialog.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Registry Cleaning Program

2011-10-06 Thread Gerald Levy

It also depends on how aggressively you want to clean your registry.
Programs like CCleaner, Advanced System Care and Glary Utilities perform a
superficial cleaning of the registry that is unlikely to cause any harm, but
some stand-alone registry cleaners perform a more thorough registry cleaning
that could really make a mess of things. For this reason, I now avoid
stand-alone registry cleaners, whose benefits are dubious at best, anyway.

Whether or not a lay person should use any kind of registry cleaning
software is subject to debate and you will find some people who tell you
not to clean your registry at all. It is true that monkeying around in
your registry can render your computer unoperational at worst.

With this warning up front, i have used registry cleaning tools for just
about as long as I have used a computer that uses a registry. g IN the
good old win 9x. days, Mickysoft themselves had a free registry tool for
download. this does not work anymore on versions of windows newer than 2k,
I believe.

As to when to clean your registry, many consider this a part of regular
computer maintenance and how often you clean out your registry largely
depends on how often you change something on your computer that writes to
the registry. Computer maintenance includes other tasks as well such as
defragging (and there are some that tell you not to defrag a computer
either), running your antimalware and antivirus software, etc.

Your registry is written to each time you install a program, change a file
association, have a program store a setting in the registry, etc. when
you, on the other hand, uninstall a program, often orphan keys are left
behind in the registry that are no longer needed but take up space and
have the computer do more work when it scans the registry for
information.Additionally, even when information is deleted from the
registry when uninstalling a program etc, holes are left in the registry
similar to when you delete a file from your hard drive. When you run a
registry cleaning tools, it checks the registry for information that is no
longer connected to anything you have installed or set on the computer.
and it takes those parts out and thus eliminates redundant information the
computer goes thru each time it accesses the registry. Ideally, after you
ran your registry cleaning tool, you should also defrag your registry to
align everything nicely and streamline it by getting rid off empty spaces
in the registry caused by either uninstalling a program, etc. or by the
work of the registry cleaner itself when it deleted unnecessary
information.

If you decide to run a registry cleaner, make sure you create a restore
point beforehand and also back up your registry before running the
cleaner. A good registry cleaner will either automatically create a backup
of your current settings of the registry befoer changing anything or it
will at least offer to do so.

As to which registry cleaner to use, this is largely a matter of choice
that depends on a few of your personal preferences, resources, etc. it is
best to download the program of yourchoice or a trial version thereof (if
you decide to go for a commercial program, the program should at least
offer a trial version so you can check it out how well it works and how
accessible it is. Whether or not you consider a program accessible or not,
also is largely a personal thing. some people will want or need to be able
to cover everything by tabbing and clicking while others are comfortable
using their screenreaders mouse emulation and screen review cursor.
Additionally you may want to google for reviews of any program you may
want to use.

Personally, I am cheap and a fairly proficient computer user. So I go for
free programs and will consider anything that can be used with the mouse
emulation if needed.

a good starter for a registry cleaner is c-cleaner (get the slim
versionwithout a toolbar. It offers registry cleaning as wel as a bunch of
other cleaning options. I do use c-cleaner but for the most part and
longest time use a program called abexo registry cleaner. Googling for
Abexo free registry cleaner should get you what you need. Abexo is a
very thorough cleaner that works from win 95 up; I have had no way to test
it under anything beyond xp.

As I said, I have used registry cleaning tools for almost as long as we
have had windows computers and never had a problem but once. That one time
was pretty hefty, though, and I would have been in big trouble if I had
not been using a hardware synthesizer at the time. I had uninstalled some
sound related software and when running Abexo after uninstalling the
program, Abexo was a little too thorough and cleaned out some

Re: [Blind-Computing] Using a screen reader in Safe Mode and questionabout the best accessible backup-solution with JAWS

2011-09-14 Thread Gerald Levy

There is no way to use JAWS in safe mode because the drivers are not yet
loaded, although someone on another list has claimed that it is possible to
use NVDA in safe mode with some kind of registry hack. As for your second
question, there is no image backup program that I am aware of that is
totally JAWS accessible. The one that comes closest is Image for Windows,
which is JAWS accessible during the backup procedure but not during the
recovery procedure. On the JAWS Users audio page, David Ferrin has a
three-part tutorial that explains how to restore an image backup without
speech using Image for Windows. Note that some sighted assistance is a good
idea to insure that the restoration procedure is proceeding smoothly,
although it is not absolutely necessary as long as you are willing to back
up your entire system onto a series of DVD's. Except for David himself, I am
not aware of anyone else who has attempted to perform a full system recovery
this way. If you back up your system onto an external hard drive, you will
need to create a rescue CD that will require sighted help to use during the
recovery process, regardless of which image backup program you choose.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Using a screen reader in Safe Mode andquestionabout the best accessible backup-solution with JAWS

2011-09-14 Thread Gerald Levy

I'm a little confused. If your local hard drive dies, you would need to
perform a complete recovery of your system onto a new drive from a backup
image. This means that you would have to back up everything, including data
files, programs, and OS onto a suitable backup medium such as DVD's. So
even if you keep your OS and programs in one partition and your data files
in another partition, you still need one series of DVD's to hold everything.
I don't understand how creating separate partitions avoids this problem. It
seems to me that if you need, say, three DVD's to hold your OS and programs
partition and another two DVD's to hold your data files partition, that's
still five DVD's, right? If you kept everything in a single partition, it
would still require five DVD's. What am I missing? And is there any
tutorial that explains how to repartition a hard drive? Thanks.

Hi Gerald,
I have used Image for Windows multiple times on multiple systems
by myself, with no problems every time.
The key is simplicity, keep the operating system partition to a
controllable

size, thus requiring fewer disks for the image.
This is why I stress to people, that keeping their personal data separate
from the operating system and programs
make backups and recoveries easier and less time-consuming.
Image for Windows does work very well, and Jaws or any screen-reader is

Hi Gerald,
Hard drives do fail, but more often than not,it is some type of corruption
within the operating system
that will require it to be re-installed.
Here is where the data partition comes in handy,
because being separate from the system partition it is not affected by a
re-installation.
Also, your personal data files may include sound, picture and video files
which may consume considerable space on the hard drive
making for an unwieldy recovery image.
Typically, once I have gotten a clean install of Windows, I create a basic
image including Jaws,
and my security software so I can return to this state at any time.
This only requires one disk, which simplifies the recovery process even
more.
I backup all of my data files to an external hard drive every day,
sometimes

multiple times so that in the event of a hard drive crash,
it is a simple copy and paste operation to put them back on the machine.
I understand that it may be possible to place an image onto a new hard
drive

from a USB hard drive,
but I haven't done this myself, since the method I chose is simple enough.
Understand that what I have said here is very general, and it does require
some time and preparation to set up a good backup plan,
but when it comes to files that you can't replace, it is time well spent
in

the event of a hard drive disaster.
I believe that there is partitioning information on both
http://www.blind-computing.com
and
http://www.jaws-users.com
If you have any more questions, , I'll do what I can to answer them. smile

2011-09-09 Thread Gerald Levy

Many printers these days are all-in-one units that combine the features of a
printer, scanner, copier and fax into a single unit. Avoid such models if
possible and stick with a dedicated printer because all-in-one units often
have LCD displays with menus that are impossible to navigate without sighted
help. If you need a printer mainly for producing letters, reports and other
typed documents, a basic monochrome laser printer would probably be your
best bet. Brother and Samsung offer very good monochrome laser printers for
under $100. Remember, that the more bells and whistles a printer contains,
the less likely it is to be usable without sighted help.

Re: [Blind-Computing] how do you perform a drive backup using Karen'sreplicator

2011-09-03 Thread Gerald Levy

Karen's Replicator is suitable for backing up files and settings, not an
entire hard drive. To back up an entire hard drive, including the OS and
all programs so that you can restore it in the event of a catastrophic
failure, you need a disk imaging program like Image for Windows or Paragon
Backup and Recovery. The problem with all imaging programs is that there is
no way to reliably perform the recovery procedure without sighted help
because there is no speech accompanying the boot CD, which all these
programs require. There is an audio tutorial on the JAWS Users audio page
in which David describes how to create an image backup of a data partition
on a pair of DVD's using Image for Windows and then restore it without
speech, but I have not heard of anyone using this technique to successfully
backup and restore an entire hard drive, which would potentially require a
lot more DVD's.

Hi list. I want to start using Karen's replicator to perform backups of my

tutorials on how to use the program. But I also did a google search. As I
wanted to get more information, as to what kind of things the program can
backup? I originally thought. That you had to perform a separate job for
each file type you wanted to backup? For example, one for documents, one
for emails etc. However, I read that it is possible to have Karen's
replicator to perform a complete disk backup. I am assuming that this
would not be an image backup. But would like to know. What would be
backupped? And how would you go about setting up a job that would result
in a complete hard drive backup?

This backing up process, is all new to me. So any opinions would be most
welcome.

Thanks Jason

P.S I am using Outlook express and Jaws 12. I am mainly wanting to backup
all of my files. So that I can access them on my external hard drive, if
my computer happens to die. I am planning on buying a system with windows

files from the external hard drive using that new computer.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Ninite not updating MSSE

When Ninite says it updates MSE, it is probably referring to program updates
not database definition updates.

MSSE

when it doesn't, at least with XP anyway?! I will continue to update
manually to insure that MSSE stays up to date. Ninite did update My

 Hi Mike,
I have never seen updates for MSE come in Windows automatic updates in
 Windows XP.
They will however, in Windows Vista and Windows 7,
but after that happens, if I go to MSE, and tell it to check for updates,
it
 always appears to update again.
I think I would just stick with letting MSE do the updating rather than a
 third-party application.

have Windows updates set to download install automatically because we
don't want a bunch of updates installed that don't have anything to do

HI David,

You are correct, but after opening the context menu, pressing enter on,
View

Control Center (Preferences/Options), right arrow to Scanning Control Tab,
Shift + Tab 2 times to Configure Schedule Scanning, press the spacebar.
Now, scheduling scans for program updates or system scanning requires the
use of both the Jaws PC cursors, left, right, up, down, arrowing,
tabbing at the correct moments to get schedules made. Then, after you
press

enter / spacebar on the save button you are taken to the page you are
speaking of that if you hold the control key down, it seems to refresh the
page, but this doesn't happen on this page running XP, with either Jaws11
or

12. So, what I do is find the close button with the Jaws cursor left
mouse click it, then everything closes fine or, close it by pressing alt +
F4. Yes Gerald, using Jaws 11 or 12 you can access threats if there are
malicious threats detected, but not with any earlier versions of Jaws.
Take

care.

So instead of routing jaws to pc, I just held ctrl-key, pressed up arrow

Re: [Blind-Computing] MSE installation

2011-07-31 Thread Gerald Levy

The two programs you mention are on demand scanners and not real-time
anti-virus programs, so it is not necessary to first remove them before
installing MSE. You can continue to use them in conjunction with MSE for
added malware protection.

Hi list,
It's Alvin again.
I want to know should I remove programs such as spybot search and Destroy
and Spy blaster before I install MSE?
Thanks for any guidance.
God bless!

Re: [Blind-Computing] Problem With IE 8 Feed Reader

2011-07-30 Thread Gerald Levy

Actually, I reinstalled IE 8 and fixed the problem. My IE 8 feed reader
works fine again. I never had IE 9 because it is incompatible with XP and
thus would have been impossible to install.

You might already have IE9. In IE9 ctrl+g is the keystroke for RSS.

Hi listers. My IE 8 RSS feed reader was working fine until yesterday
when my techie friend performed some preventive maintenace and diagnostic
testing on my computer. Now, when I invoke the Feeds list in IE8 with
Control-J and hit enter on any feed, instead of going to the web page
containing the feed content, the file download dialog is invoked. So for
instance, if I hit enter on the feed labeled blind planet aggregator, I
hear file download...do you want to open this file?, instead of going
to the blind planet aggregator page to read the latest content. He did
not make any changes to IE, but did run Wise Registry Cleaner. What's
going on here, and how do I fix it? I am running JAWS 9 with XP Pro, and
until yesterday, my IE 8 feed reader has worked flawlessly.
