[Blind-Computing] ADVENTURES WITH GOOGLE CHROME

2013-01-02 Thread John Justice
Hi everyone,

I tried using Google Chrome because I accidentally downloaded it along with
an update to my Real Player software. It seemed okay except that I couldn't
get it to activate any of the buttons on a web page.

I finally had to uninstall it and go back to Explorer 9.

Is there something I missed?

Has anyone else had success with Google Chrome as a browser?

It looks accessible so maybe there's a setting somewhere that has to be
changed.

Any help would be most welcome.

Hi All,

Well, I went into preferences made the changes below finally, Adobe is
working again! Hot damn!

For those who have had the same problem you can give these setting changes a
try to see if they help.

On the Security Enhanced tab, I unchecked the options below.

Enable Protected Mode at startup, I unchecked this box.

Enable Enhanced Security, I unchecked this box.

Take care.

[Blind-Computing] INTERNET EXPLORER PROBLEM, I BELIEVE

2012-11-25 Thread John Justice
At work, we're using Jaws 12, Windows XP Professional and Explorer 7.

Suddenly, the system is creating multiple windows without being prompted to
do so. In addition, the Alt F4 key doesn't seem to work so the only way to
delete them is by using the Alt Space menu and typing the letter C. But as
soon as they're removed, they come back. At one point, the system had
generated 4 duplicates of the same internet screen.

We work on www.fedex.com and on the Locations page.

Can anyone offer a possible solution to this issue. I am not able to use
the system as it is now.

1.Should I try to download a clean version of Internet Explorer,
delete the original one and re-install?

2. Why, without warning, is the Alt F4 refusing to close any programs?

3. Could anything else be causing this problem?

Thanks for any help in advance. I'm do back at work tomorrow so if I can
fix this thing myself, I won't have to wait for our technical support
people. I do have access to administrative options if I need them.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Can Embedding files into messages be done inOutlook?

2012-11-25 Thread John Justice
Mr. Holland,
They are discussing adding or embedding a sound file into an e-mail
message. This is something which was very popular some time ago. I would
open an e-mail about a trip on a train and hear the train itself. At the
time, I was using Outlook Express. Since Outlook is a business based
application, I'm not sure it's possible to embed a sound file like that.

Exactly what do you mean by embedding files in the first place?

If you mean inserting a file or files as attachments, certainly! You need
to use the Insert menu.

If you mean to have the contents of a file appear inline with the
remainder message, I suppose it depends on the type of file being the
source. I thought Outlook (not Outlook Express) provided an option to use
MS-Word as the tool of composition; in that case any file you can embed into
a Word document would likewise be the same for Outlook.

You could always alter your composition tool to Outlook just for any
messages you want to do this with, then set it back as it had been
previously.

Randy,

At this time, it is still possible to purchase an upgrade disk which will
take you from Windows XP to Windows 7. However, as soon as Windows 8 comes
out as a fully functioning version, the Windows 7 disks will be much harder
to find. If you're going to do this at all, I'd suggest you do it very
soon. There's a great deal of documentation available which can help you
transition from XP to Windows 7. Some of it might still be on the Blind
Computing site. The version of Jaws you are using might have some effect on
how well Windows 7 functions once you have made the change.

Anything over Jaws 11 should work just fine. For me, switching from one
type of Windows to the other was a bit challenging at first but to tell you
the truth, it wasn't that much of a problem.

There are many people on our list here who can give you help or hints.

I can't emphasize enough though, if you are going to make the switch, do it
very soon!

It won't be long before Windows 8 comes out as a complete marketable version
if it hasn't done so already. The stores have a bad habit of getting rid of
older software very quickly. That's because they make much more money on
the newer programs.

Good luck, Randy.

Rosemarie, One of the easiest ways to find that function with Windows 7
Is by using your Search function.
Just press the Windows key to open the Search field.
Begin typing with the word disk. The first option will be Disk Cleanup.
So press the spacebar after disk and continue typing with the D in
Defragmenter.
You probably won't get past that letter before the system brings up exactly
what you want.
Just press enter on that choice and the dialog opens.

Re: [Blind-Computing] FOR RANDY, UPGRADING FROM XP TO WINDOWS 7

2012-11-17 Thread John Justice
Hi Pete.

1. No, it isn't necessary to re-format a hard drive when switching from XP
to Windows 7. Both of these programs are simply operating systems. They
help you access and manage other programs and files. There are times when
an incompatibility might arise if your switching from a 32 bit to a 64 bit
system but other than that, no formatting of other files is necessary.

2. Once you purchase the Windows 7 disk, you can load the same program on
several machines. I believe that the maximum on some Microsoft products is
three copies but I don't know if that applies to Windows 7.

2. If I have already purchased a version of Windows 7 which I have
installed on a laptop, can I use that same CD to upgrade my desktop or must
I buy another copy of Windows 7?

Hmmm! I have never done that David. In fact, I'm not sure that the average
computer user would know how to perform a clean installation. I'll bet
it presents fewer possible issues but I'm not sure I'd recommend that course
of action to someone with normal computer experience. You may have
forgotten that you, yourself, are highly skilled in these matters. I, for

[Blind-Computing] LAP TOP BATTERY ISSUE

2012-11-11 Thread John Justice
I have a suggestion regarding the laptop battery issue unless the problem
has already been resolveds.

I don't know anything about Asus computers but in most cases, a system will
start acting like that when the battery is no longer able to receive a full
charge. Although laptop batteries are less prone to this problem than other
systems using rechargeable batteries, it does happen, occasionally.

1.Try ddisconnecting your laptop from the power source and allowing
the battery to fully discharge. Don't worry about your files. They won't
be lost. Just keep running the system on battery until you get the warning.

2.Remove the battery and carefully clean the contacts both on the
battery and in the laptop. The best way to do this is with a cloth
whichdoesn't leave any kind of residue. You can use a small amount of
denatured alcohol but only a small amount, enough to moisten not drench the
cloth.

3. Allow the battery contents to dry thoroughly.

4. Now, reassemble the unit and plug in your power source. Allow
enough time for the battery to reach full charge, at least three hours.

Unplug the electrical source.

Turn on the system and check the laptop battery reading. If it still shows
80%, you have a battery which has to be replaced.
If on the other hand, the battery shows full charge, you have resolved the
problem.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Renaming a folder

If you are using the Ribbon commands in Windows 7, do the following.

1. Make sure that you are currently in the folder you want to change. Then
activate the Ribbon menus by pressing the Alt key.
2. Tab until you hear the Folders option and press Enter to open that
submenu.
3. Under the Folders menu is a submenu called Actions. Use the right
arrow to open that menu.
4. The first option is Rename This Folder.

I don't know how to do this without using the Ribbon menus.

[Blind-Computing] MICROSOFT WORD, PROTECTED VIEW

2012-10-22 Thread John Justice
Microsoft Office 2010 treats imported documents in a special way if they
originate on the Internet. The document is opened, but is placed in
something called Protected View. Jaws will not read a document in that
state.

In this mode, if you use a Say All command, a message appears explaining
what Protected View is and why the document was handled that way.

To change from Protected View to an editable version, press Alt F and arrow
down to a button called Allow Editing and press Enter on that option.
Once the document has been altered in this manner, it will read normally.

It is recommended that the document be saved in the new editable format
since it will not remain in that condition if the user exits the document.

Jacob,
As I read Mark's problem, I believe that the tension clips have snapped.
These are small plates which fit tightly against the smaller type of USB

Worst comes to the worst, you can generally transfer/move the actual drive
over/into another new, healthy housing, or possibly, simply replace the
cable for that housing as such - for example, my two separate external USB
cabled hard drives are in two rather different housings, since the one is a
larger, physical dimension drive, but, smaller in terms of capacity, and
they're both actually the same internal hardware as you would normally find
with a normally mounted, internal hard drive, but just mounted in these
externally housings that then let you connect them via USB cables, and
provide power sources for them, etc. etc.

Either way, first thing to do would be to see if just cable can be replaced,
and lots of these external drive housings use various standard connector
cables of shared varieties as well.

 Hi
Today I tried to plug in my USB 500 GB external hard drive. I noticed
it didn't come up as a drive under the list of drives under windows 7. So,

 I

check the cable against another device and it is good. My question is how

I get this jack fixed? I have a lot of personal data that I need to access

 Thank you.

[Blind-Computing] REPORT ON AUSLOGICS BOOSTSPEED

2012-07-13 Thread John Justice
Hi group,

I have seen several questions about this tune up tool so I decided to check
it out and then provide an evaluation.

I have noticed that if you download the free program, the system will
identify but not fix errors. The only way you can have the software
complete the scan is by purchasing the full program at: $49.95 USD.

In answer to Joe's question, yes, with some navigation, the program is
completely accessible.

WARNING!

The cost entitles you to a one year subscription, only. Apparently, after
that period, you will have to pay an additional charge to continue using
Auslogics Boostspeed.

When I scanned my computer, more than 3000 errors were found.

There were 47 which could not be repaired.

Just as a test, I scanned a second time and the software found and corrected
two additional errors.

There are some other options you can use which will optimize your memory,
clean the Temporary Internet Files folder and delete your browsing history.
All of these procedures can be performed using standard Windows 7 functions.

When you purchase Auslogics Boostspeed, you will be licensed to use it on
three different computers. All you do is copy the .exe file and then load
it on your new computer. You may also have to save the license code and
bring that along as well. I haven't detected any significant increase in
speed as of yet. But it is good to know that those errors were corrected.
At this point, I'm not sure whether there will be an improvement in the over
all performance of my system.

It might be just as effective to use something like Regscrub or C Cleaner
and perform the other functions using standard Windows 7 tools.

Okay, Angelina. You may need to study the software carefully. However, one
of the scanning options should be that you can choose which kind of file the
information is saved to. One of those options may be .pdf. Normally, you
need a full Adobe .pdf version to create a document in that format.
However, I have noticed that in some generic scanner software packages, .pdf
is an option.
If you find that you can't save to that format, you may need a conversion
program. There are quite a few out there and some may be on our home page.

A word of caution might be in order here, Angelina. Not all Epson scanners
are compatible with Jaws. I had to return one for that very reason.
Have you had the scanner for long? If not, and you find that it doesn't
work with Jaws, you might be able to return it and get an HP or some other
scanner that does work with screen readers.
There's a whole list of them on the Freedom Scientific site under Open
Book. That's one of their scanning programs. It's quite expensive these
days so I hope you can make the generic program work for you.
As a last resort, there are also several reasonable scanning programs, some
of which are quite workable with Jaws although not nearly as flexible as
Open Book.
Good luck Angelina.

Finally, after thinking it over a bit, I made a fourth copy and this time, I
changed the writing speed. That did it. ITunes isn't bad but I wish it was
much more accessible. The newer most recent versions are much more
manageable.

MAKING A MUSIC CD USING
ITUNES

BY: JOHN JUSTICE

It's relatively easy to create a CD using ITunes. Since everything is
stored in what ITunes calls the Library Play List you have to create a
separate play list so that the system won't try to put everything you have
on dis. In my case, that recording session would run for more than 4 days.

Creating a new Play List is easy. Just tab until you hear New Play List and
press Enter. You'll be offered the opportunity to name the new play list.
Like so many other programs of this type, a default name is put into that
field. Just use your Home key to get to the beginning, highlight the entire
name and then type in your own.

Now that you have created a new play list which will eventually end up on a
disk, the next task is to move the songs you want into that list. The
easiest way is to use ITunes's Search function. To reach the Search field,
use F6. It should bring you right to the field. Type in the artist's name
or the album name. Make sure you spell it correctly.

Once you have entered the information, tab to the list which will be
created, using that search criteria.

This is the great thing about the modern versions of ITunes. They will
respond to normal Windows Copy, Paste and Delete functions.

To move that entire list into your newly created play list, press Control A
to highlight the entire list. Next, press Control C to copy the entire list
onto your clipboard. You can also copy and move one song at a time if you
want to create a new play list from different sources.

Press F6 until you hear the menu of play lists created by ITunes. First
Letter Navigation can be used to locate the new play list you created. If
there is another list which begins with the same letter, the system will not
move to the next play list but a simple down arrow command should bring the
focus to the correct entry.

Tab until you hear the list of titles for that particular play list. It
will be empty of course since it has just been created.

Use Control V to paste the list of titles you copied earlier into the new
play list. Wait about two or three seconds and then press the down arrow.
If everything has worked according to plan, you will hear those titles you
selected and copied earlier.

Their actual location has not really changed. They are still in the master
Library Play List. This procedure creates instructions for ITunes which
allows the program to call up those particular selections when this play
list is highlighted.

CREATING A DISK FROM A PLAY LIST:

Load a blank CD into your drive.

Press Alt F to access the File menu.

Press the letter O which is the direct access key for Burn To Disk.

A new menu will open and the focus will be on the first of several options
you can choose when creating a disk from this play list.

The default setting for the record speed is Maximum Possible and for most
applications, that's fine. But if you create a disk and get songs that
stutter or which don't play properly, try reducing the speed to something
like 8X. In older disk creating software like Roxio, that was the default
setting for an audio disk. There is no detectable difference in the sound
quality of the finished disk. However, burning a disk at 8X does take a
bit longer

setting for an audio disk. There is no detectable difference in the sound
quality of the finished disk. However, burning a disk at 8X does take a
bit longer. To move the recording speed, just use the up arrow.

Tab to the next setting which asks you if you want to create an audio CD.
For this project, leave that setting where it is. Tab again and you can
choose the length of silence between each song. The default is two seconds
but you can move it to more time if desired. There is a setting here for no
gap between songs. If you are using a program like DVD Audio Extractor,
various parts of the program are recorded on short .mp3 files. Since in
normal play, there is no gap in the audio when playing a DVD, set the gap so
that each successive file plays continuously.

Tab to the Burn command and press Enter.

NOTE ON UNUSUALLY LONG RECORDINGS:

If the total number of kilobytes in the files of your new play list exceeds
the maximum space available on a single disk, ITunes will notify you of that
and ask you if you want the selections spread over more than one disk. For
example, this would happen if you were recording the audio from a movie onto
disk. If you press Enter on the Okay button, ITunes will burn the first
disk, automatically eject it and wait for you to load a second disk. Remove
the first burned disk, set it aside and insert a new blank disk. As soon as
you return the drawer to its closed position, ITunes will continue the
process.

Go to the File Tab, ALT F

then tab once to your account and press enter

Tab to you hear Account Settings and press enter

You'll hear Account settings again, press enter againThen you'll land on an
email tab

Tab in the toolbar to you hear Change and press enter

Tab until you hear More settings and press enter

Shift Tab then arrow right to Advance and tab until you see the option for
leaving it on the server

It's in there

[Blind-Computing] COOL MICROSOFT OFFICE SOUNDS

2012-06-21 Thread John Justice
I found these fooling around with my Office 2010. They work on all of the
programs in the suite.

This might be old news to some of you but I enjoy the sound Outlook 2010
makes when it deletes or sends a message. Setting up the Sounds can be a
challenge but I can walk anyone interested through it.

I like to know what my computer is doing and this little .exe program does
that quite well.

Add that to the Andre Lewis sound scape and you really have things going on.

Hello There;

It's my understanding;
If your wanting to burn a data CD, you can burn through the windows explorer,
And it's very much like the xp burn utility; However, if your wanting to burn a
audio cd, you'll need to use another program.

Applies to all editions of Windows 7.

Burn a CD or DVD in Windows Explorer

If your computer has a CD or DVD burner, you can copy files to a writable disc.
This process is called burning a disc. Windows burns discs in the Live File
System format or in the Mastered format, depending on which disc format you
choose. For more information about deciding which format you should choose when
burning a disc, see Which CD or DVD format should I use?

The following procedures explain how to use Windows Explorer to burn a data
disc (a type of disc that is useful for storing, archiving, and sharing files
among different computers and devices). If you want to create other types of
discs, such as a DVD-Video disc (to play in a regular DVD player) or an audio
CD (to play in a regular CD player), you’ll need to use a different program or
feature of Windows.

Hello the easiest way to do this is;

1, place a blank CD into the drive.
If a wizard comes up, just press alt+f4.

2, navigate to your music folder,
Now select the music you want to burn to disk/DVD, Press the applications
key, up arrow and enter on, Send-to sub-menu, Up or down arrow and enter on
the CD/DVD drive.

Note most likely a wizard will come up.

Hi group. I agree with Mark in this case. You may not remember but early
versions of Windows 7 were a mess. Upgrades and fixes used to come almost
every day for a while until Microsoft got things on track.

They usually do get things fixed eventually. Buying or upgrading to a new
piece of software can be compared to trying out a new medication. Some
people love the challenge of working out the bugs. Personally, I enjoy
playing with a new piece of software but I get very frustrated when things
don't work as they should. Ask David Ferrin. He has pulled my irons out of
the fire more than once.

Looking for feedback either on list or off. I currently have
3 computers in the home network that are all running XP Pro. I realize this
will be supported until I believe June 2014. However, One of the units is
having extreme issues and really needs to be replaced. There is another that
could be.
My understanding is Window's 8 is coming out in the Fall sometime. I have no
personal experience with Window's 7 or 8. I know once Window's 8 is released
you will still be able to get Window's 7 pre installed on new units
purchased but I'm sure it will fade quickly. So my question to those that
have tinkered with both, would it be better to replace units this Fall while
Window's 7 is still the base system or wait until Window's 8 is the norm?
All suggestions and comments welcome

Yes, I've done it using jaws 12 and you do it exactly as per the

I've asked several questions of JAWS users for help in burning a CD with
different burning software, but I stumbled upon a site that says that
things have got a whole lot easier. Windows 7 has its own built in burning
features so you can burn a CD/DVD in just a few clicks.

1. Select a file or files you want to burn to a disc, and click the Burn
button at the top of your window.

2. You will then be presented with another window showing the files added to
the burn list, so you will be able to add more files to the burn list if you
want or you can just click burn to disc.

3. It will then check to make sure you have a disc inserted into your drive,
and if you do you will be asked to add a name to the disc and you can choose
a different write speed if you wish but it will automatically select the
highest recording speed available for you.

4. And once you've clicked next it will begin burning the files to the disc,

However, I practically have to have my mouth right at the microphone to get
any kind of a recording. I have the volume level set to 100% and the result
could hardly be heard and I have to set the volume to maximum in GoldWave to

So, what microphone does anyone suggest that recording two or more people or
even recording a tutorial with Jaws will be heard? I am hoping for a

bar, left mouse key, or even trying to locate it in Jaws cursor. Very
annoying as some of these are vital such as Print coupons.
I was told by FS that Jaws 11 would not work with IE9 so I am curious as to
whether this is happening with higher versions of Jaws.
Thanks,
Sherrie Gosling

I have used both Insert+ESC and F5 with no change. I am not losing focus as
I remain on the link I am trying to activate. I've used Control+Tab to move
away from that tab and added the Shift key to the command to move back with
no difference. The problem is definitely website dependent as I can go back
to the problem sites and continue to experience the problem.

Have you tried refreshing the screen with insert+escape.
Although I'm using IE9,
Sometimes this happens, I just press the f6-key, This seems to bring the
page To focus; Or maybe, try; press ctrl+f6 this places you at the top of

Hi all,

Annette, in addition to what other listers have suggested, try these
alternatives:

Sometimes, you may need to press insert plus f7 and click on the desired
link from within the list of links to make it work.

Another solution you may try is to tab or shift tab away from the link, then
tab back to it and press enter. Remember, don't use the arrow keys, use tab
instead. Jaws uses a virtual buffer which sometimes doesn't interact
properly with some of the webpage elements.

Hope that helps!

Re: [Blind-Computing] Customer Service Advice Needed

2012-05-23 Thread John Justice
This happens to be exactly what I've been doing for twenty years. I'll
make this brief so we won't bore the rest of the group. If you need more
detailed information, my personal e-mail is below every message.
We have found, through experimentation, that the best way to use a talking
computer and hear the customer at the same time is to employ a dual headset.
One side is used to receive customer calls while the opposite headphone
receives information from Jaws relating to navigating the screens.
If you use an open speaker for Jaws, the customer becomes confused or
over-interested in what he or she is hearing. Conversely, when a dual
headset is used, the only person who hears Jaws is you, the operator.

Hey everyone,

Is anyone on the list working a customer service job?

I am wondering how you listen to the customer on the phone while also
listening to your screen reader on your computer. What are some of the
strategies?

If you use a headset for the telephone can you still hear your screen reader
and operate your computer quickly and effectively?

I am just trying to think of the best way to use a screen reader while
talking to a customer on the phone.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Screen Reader for Work

Good heavens, no! One of the best alternatives I have found is System
Access. It costs a great deal less than jaws and consequently isn't quite
as capable but it will be able to help you perform all or most of the
essential functions.
One of the good things about System Access is that you can purchase a
version which can be downloaded onto a thumb drive. In that way, all you
have to do is to plug in the drive and System Access To Go will work quite
well.
I believe that Jaws also has that capability but I do understand about cost
limitations.
Good luck on your job hunt.

[Blind-Computing] DODGE CITY DESPIRADOS GAME, SOME SUGGESTIONS

2012-05-15 Thread John Justice
Greg,

Here are some suggestions that might help.

1.After downloading the zip file from the web site, using the link
provided, highlight the file and then press the Applications key. One of
the options under that list will be Extract All and that's the one you
want.

2. You may be asked for a directory where the files can be stored
after being unzipped. You can choose a new directory or just accept the one
which will be created automatically.

3. The Data folder, an executable file and a .txt file will all be in
that directory, once the files have been extracted. Be sure to choose the
option to show the files after extraction.

4. To start the game, press Enter on the .exe file. But here's a
hint. The system will probably ask you if you want to run this file. You
do want to run it and you can eliminate any future questions by pressing
Enter on the check box which asks if you want to do this every time. From
that point on, when you click on the file, the game will open with a series
of questions about whether you need instructions, sound effects and so on.

5. Good luck.

Re: [Blind-Computing] distortion with jaws;

2012-05-11 Thread John Justice
Dan,
We had this problem at FedEx some time ago. Our I T people discovered it
was a sound card issue. Apparently, the sound cards in older machines
don't work well with later versions of Jaws.
We had to order and install newer cards and the problem went away
immediately.
But before you go that route, I suggest that you test your sound source to
make sure that there isn't distortion in the output of other programs. If
there is, then the issue is an internal one rather than an incompatibility
with Jaws.

Shift + F10 will get me there with either up or down arrow.

This is very funny. Now whose post do we consider to be fact, Janie's or
Alex's? Maybe we can get the moderator to be the tie breaker. Again, the
most important factors are that the moderator must be using a normal 104 key
kb with a windows context menu key which is located to the left of the
control key on the right After pressing the windows applications key and the
context menu pops up, the moderator must up arrow to look for this elusive
copy as path choice.

 Hi,

My apologies, I totally forgot to mention this important difference. It
wasn't until this question came up that I recalled the difference in the
 two

ways of accessing the Windows context menu. For those following along and
finding themselves getting a bit confused :), there are 2 ways of
 accessing
the windows 7 context menu. The first is using the windows applications
 key,

and using this method will not show the Copy as path option. If you use
 the
second method which is using shift + F10, you will definitely see this
option to copy as path. Again, the copy as path feature allows one to copy
the whole path of a file to then paste anywhere else using the normal
control + V method. this is definitely a much appreciated time saver.

Would someone with a full keyboard with an applications key please do me a
favor and highlight a file, press the windows applications key, then up
arrow repeatedly to see if the Copy as path option is presented. Remember,
the key is to press the up arrow looking for Copy as path.

This works fine. The interesting thing to me is that I have been under

impression for a long time that shift + F10 and the applications key are

 shift

F10 only. To think I have been using copy path for a year already on this

Hi john,
Perhapes you are looking for the program mentioned below its called free
audio burner and it exactly suits the requirements mentioned by you as per
my experiments. It is also accessible with the screen reader like jaws.

Description
Free Audio CD Burner creates CD discs to play them in any music center such
as disc center, car stereo with CD player, etc.
Program's Features:
- burns CD-R and CD-RW discs;
- erases information from rewriteable discs;
- supports a variety of audio formats including *.mp3, *.wav, *.aac, *.m4a,
*.m4b, *.wma, *.ogg, *.flac, *.ra, *.ram, *.amr, *.ape, *.mka, *.tta,
*.aiff, *.au, *.mpc, *.spx, *.ac3;
- decodes and writes compressed audio formats on-the fly (no staging to hard
drive is required);
- lets you easily create a list of audio recordings.
You can select a Write Method in the program:
- TrackAtOnce (set by default) (the program burns each track individually,
one at a time. You can leave the disc unfinalized and add tracks to an
existing session);
- DiscAtOnce (the program burns the entire disc at once and finalizes it).
Free Audio CD Burner uses Windows burning engine (IMAPI).

This is freeware. If you are interested to have look on this tool and would
like to test it out then go to:

http://dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-Audio-CD-Burner.htm

thanks,
mukesh.

[Blind-Computing] CONVERTING MP3 FILES TO STANDARD CD, WINDOWS 7

2012-02-27 Thread John Justice
Recently, David sent me a tutorial for converting MP3 files for use in a CD
player. His version was based on Windows XP and using the same process with
Windows 7 presents some interesting challenges.

I tried to follow the steps but it only goes so far and then seems to get
stuck.

1.Insert blank disk in recording drive.

2. From the Autoplay menu, choose Burn files to disk using Windows
Explorer.

3. Windows asks the question, What do you want to do with this disk?
I chose create a CD or DVD.

4. Windows 7 now puts the cursor in a field which shows the current
date, a default name for the disk which can be over-written. I highlighted
the file and entered my own disk name.

5. I used a folder and copied and pasted the files into the field
provided.

6. If you press Tab at this point, Windows 7 goes into naming the
disk, the author, genre and so on. I entered the File menu by pressing Alt
F and chose Burn Files to Disk, the acceleration character is T.

7. Then Windows 7 appears to bring you through a dialog where you can
choose writing speed, disk type and so on. It finally ends with nothing.
The system goes around and around without resolving the burn. I tried using
the Jaws Cursor and navigated to the top of the page where Burn to Disk and
Delete Temporary Files are shown. I got what sounded like a burn, but then
the disk showed no files.

I finally gave up, copied the files into a Play List on ITunes and burned
them that way.

What am I doing wrong? It seems like such a simple operation but
apparently, with Windows 7, something else is needed.

Any help would be most welcome.

This is some what of a loaded question as it has multiple parts, so let's
try and take them a little at a time.

Gold Wave will convert MP3 files in to wave by a simple save as command. The
next part would be to burn them to disk converting them to the audio CD
format in the process. The files you are seeing on your CD IE CDA files
stand for compact disk audio and they are simply for the lack of a better
term pointers to the digital content on the disk.

So what burning programs do you have at your disposal. I am not a big fan of
iTunes and know nothing about real player. Gold Wave has no burning
capability unfortunately.

I have several good programs on my system but I can't seem to find how to
convert an mp3 file into one that will play in a CD player not capable of
reading those files.

I have ITunes,

Real Player,

GOLD WAVE:

One of those programs should be able to create ordinary CD disks but I don't
know how to go about it. The file types used by CD players are quite a bit
larger than mp3 files. They aren't .wav files either.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I used to be able to do this with Nero 6, but as we all know, recent

Re: [Blind-Computing] about outlook express for windows 7

2012-02-19 Thread John Justice
Hi mr. Kumar.
No, Outlook Express does not work with Windows 7. Microsoft has created a
new e-mail program called Windows Live Mail.
It does work with Windows 7 but it is quite different in some respects from
Outlook Express.
The only program that I know which can be compared with Outlook Express and
which will work with Windows 7 is Microsoft Outlook, itself.
However, this is not a free program. It is usually part of a suite of
programs called Microsoft Office.
Independent versions are available for sale from Microsoft and from many
retail stores.

Another way is to highlight the drive in the Computer window (formerly My

After a few seconds you will hear that the drive can now be safely removed.
It is on rare occasions that the Eject option is not available and that is
when I go to the system tray method.

Hi John. You can disconnect such a device, like a thumb drive, external
hd, etc, as long you're not accessing files on it or trying to copy
files or folders to it, etc. If you want to be safe, however, go to the
start menu and in the search box type device, and choose devices and
printers. There you can look for whatever device it might be that is
connected to your computer and right click, or press the applications
key, and choose the appropriate option.

Hope that helps!

Somehow, I must have missed something. Recently, when I tried to use my
Desktop shortcut to reach Microsoft Security Essentials, I got a message
indicating that the link was no longer valid because the program had been
deleted or moved. I checked on my main C drive and there was no folder for
that program, even in the 86 folder.

Yet, something is still scanning my system regularly and there are links
indicating changing the scan schedule, full or quick scan and so on.

The only thing I can think of is that Microsoft replaced Security Essentials
with something else. It seems to be working but that does concern me a bit.

My research indicates that it has been replaced by something called Windows
Defender. Is this right?

Does anyone know anything about this program? I thought that it was just a
basic anti-virus program at one time but there seems to be anti-malware
elements and the virus definitions are being updated.

Any help would be most welcome.

[Blind-Computing] FINDING AVAILABLE MEMORY ON A DISK, LAPTOP

2011-11-08 Thread John Justice
This is driving me crazy.

I just did a disk cleanup on my laptop but I don't remember the command
which will read the available memory on my C drive.

If someone knows that answer, I'd appreciate having the info asap.

Thanks very much.

Sorry mate, but I still need to know how much RAM is available on my

Can you tell me which laptop key strokes I can use to learn how much RAM is

Hi John,
You can't find what isn't there.
You will find the available memory in the properties of your computer, and
available disk space in the properties of the disk in question.
Memory, and disk storage are not the same, but I think we covered this some
time ago. smile HTH, Rick Justice

Hi John,

Try the following;
1. Click on My Computer from the desktop.
2. Highlight your Local Disk C, but do not open it, invoke the Alt + enter
keystroke for properties. You can also press Shift + F10, arrow up to
properties press enter 3. Route your Jaws cursor to the PC cursor with the
Insert / Jaws Key + NumPad Minus / Jaws Cursor Key.
4. Press the page up / NumPad 9 key.
5. Now, arrow down 1 line at a time to get the information you're looking
for.

Hope this helped. Take care.

[Blind-Computing] NOW I UNDERSTAND HOW SOME NEWBEES MIGHT FEEL

2011-11-08 Thread John Justice
Recently, I made a serious request for the key strokes I would need to learn
the available RAM on my laptop.

Several people were kind enough to provide the information but one or two
others decided to turn it into a joke or a poke at me for the article I
managed to get printed.

If the same thing happened to one of our list members who was genuinely
trying to learn something, that person might go off and complain
vociferously about the attitude displayed by a technology based list like
this one. I do believe that some of our more capable and knowledgeable
members do tend to forget that there are many levels of understanding
represented by the participants of this group. Perhaps a better approach
might have been to ascertain whether the request was a serious one before
taking humorous pot shots at the sender.

Re: [Blind-Computing] itunes is a pain

2011-10-25 Thread John Justice
Leslie, I believe that you may have conflicting ITune versions in your
system. What you may have to do is to completely eliminate all files
pertaining to that program, then start all over again.
I'm not referring to the song data though. You can download that onto a
separate jump drive but you will probably have to do a serious cleaning,
remove all ITunes and ITunes related files other than songs, then re-install
a new version from the site.
It's free so that shouldn't present an issue. You are trying to read
library files created by a newer version of the software, but you are using
an older version to do it.
How that happened, I really don't know but I believe that the only real
solution is what is called a clean installation of the program.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Considering a new computer, what should I get

2011-09-08 Thread John Justice
Matt,
There are two ways you can go with this option. If you already have a
current version of Jaws, then I suggest either a desktop or laptop loaded
with Windows 7. Most programs produced by Microsoft will function with
jaws. There are a few exceptions which are included in the older Microsoft
Office versions like 2000 and 2003. But there is a Microsoft office 2010
Home and Business package which is quite reasonable and contains all or most
of the programs you will need.
One of those programs is Outlook 2010 which is, in my opinion, one of the
best and most accessible e-mail software packages. Not only does it provide
excellent e-mail processing, storage and mailing, but it also has a great
calendar which can be set up to advise you when a special date is coming up.
The Contacts list is similar to the one used in Outlook Express but this
program offers a great deal more than the software you are now using.
Office 2010 Home and business also includes Microsoft Word, an excellent
word processor and Excel, one of the best known spread sheet programs
around.

The alternative to continuing with Microsoft Windows would involve the
acquisition of an Apple system. Apple offers similar program options to
Windows but it is much less prone to virus infections. From what I
understand, Apple will provide upgrades to their systems at much more
reasonable rates than Freedom Scientific now requires. However, there is a
considerable learning curve involved since you will be using an entirely
different operating system. Some of Apple's web browsers aren't as easily
navigated as Internet Explorer. Their Safari system does have some access
issues. Apple provides outstanding customer support. These days matt, the
costs are similar when comparing a Windows based system and something like a
mac Pro. Even now, there are many more programs written for Windows than
there are for Apple's systems. But since many of these new software
packages aren't accessible to us with screen readers, that may not be a
serious drawback.

have all go swimmingly and as if by perfect design, don't ya know?
hahahahah, yeah right... right?
But anyway, what operating system do you guys suggest, since I use jaws?
What works?
What would have an email program which would allow me to have group email
addresses, where-by I could email a lot of contacts, hide the list in a bcc
line, and all that?
I write prayer requests for my church and send out to a large group from
outlook express on my windows xp home machine right now.
I'm tired of fighting this tired draggy old thing, and would like to step it
up.

This message is for Yvonne and anyone else who might have been wondering
about these terms which are batted back and forth so readily by computer
users.

A byte is a single exchange of digital data. It is the minimal measurement
of any digital exchange.

1 kilobyte = one thousand bytes.

1 megabyte =one thousand kilobytes or one million bytes.

In Yvonne's question, she asked how many kilobytes are in 7 megabytes.

7 megabytes = 7 thousand kilobytes or 7 million bytes of data transmitted in
a second.

That is one incredibly fast transfer speed. You should be aware however,
that the figure mentioned is a selling point. You will get that kind of
speed some of the time when all conditions are optimal. Many things can
impact that speed however. That would include, internet conditions at the
time of the transmission, the condition of the fiber optic cable, weather
and so on.

But what impacts download speed the most are two factors.

1.Your own individual computer,

2. The current usage on that particular internet service provider's
network.

Let me reassure you Yvonne that even at the worst of times, fiber optic
transmission is many times faster than any conventional cable network and
often hundreds of times faster than any dial up connection. The reason for
that is simple although the technology is light years away from what we
started with. Fiber optic is literally information sent through glass fiber
by equipment which uses light rather than electricity to carry modulated
signals. One fiber optic cable can handle thousands of simultaneous
transmissions. By the time the signal reaches your computer of course, it
has been converted to standard electronic formats. But the speed between
various conversion points is nothing less than phenomenal! It is relatively
new technology however and as such, tends to be considerably more expensive
when compared to standard cable networks. There are commercials out there
which try to claim that new technology has made older style cable systems as
fast as fiber optics. They have certainly improved their download speeds
but even at their best and most expensive speeds, they are still operating
at about half the download speed of a fiber optic system. But why should
anyone care about that speed? As technology has developed, software has
increased in complexity and has grown in size as a result. In the year
2000, the average size of a computer program was about six hundred
kilobytes. Today, the average size of a piece of ordinary software is two
megabytes. When a computer user is dealing with software or downloads which
are that big or larger, he or she needs to get that information into the
computer as quickly as possible. Even with today's amazing improvements in
service, the potential for interruption or corruption of a large file during
transfer is still a possibility. Here's an example of what I mean. If a
computer user downloads a song which contains multiple media such as music,
video, static data and functional parameters, one song can be as much as
three megabytes in size. If anything interferes with that download before
it is completed, the entire program might be rendered useless. The idea
therefore is to transmit data as quickly as possible. The longer the
connection between two computers exists, the potential for interruption
increases exponentially.

The introduction of download services like Apple, Audio.com and net flicks,
means that more and more people are obtaining their entertainment over the
internet rather than purchasing hard copies. Think about

Let us not forget the fact that there are 8 bits in a byte and 1024 bytes in
a kilobyte. The fact is boys and girls although a hard drive for example may
indeed have a trillion bytes of storage it is in fact only a 931 gigabyte
drive. This is because hard drive manufacturers operate on the base 10
system where as computers function on the base 2 system in that the only 2
states of electricity are on or off.

Hence forth a zero indicates that the power is off where as a one means that
the power is on. When it boils down to the lowest common denominator this is
all a computer is capable of doing.

Rosemarie, I'd like to add a thought or two to David's excellent
suggestions.
However, on my machine, if you press the Windows key and hear the blank
indicating that you are in the Search window, my computer will move directly
to the Shut Down if you press the right arrow.
This is what Windows 7 calls a Split command. That means that if you
press the right arrow again, you will be taken to a series of options or,
you can just press enter on Shut Down and that is what will happen.

Now, when you buy a new computer, the software which comes with it is often
months out of date. So, when you bring it up, Windows 7 will try to correct
that situation. In the beginning, for that reason, there might be quite a
few updates that have to be added. This isn't a bad thing. Unlike XP,
Windows 7 will automatically update certain elements of your software
without being asked. It is possible to set your computer to load those
programs or updates without bothering you at all. If your new system is
configured like that, when you go into Shut Down, many of those updates will
be performed before the system closes down. Don't worry about that,
Rosemarie.
Windows 7 is a marvelous piece of software and it's a great deal more self
reliant than anything Microsoft has developed to date. David's suggestion
of how to access the Updates function is a good one. Just like XP, Windows
7 has a display of programs which have been made prominent. One of them is
the Windows Update. So if you begin at the Search field, you can arrow up
or arrow down until you hear Update. But you can also type Windows Update
in the Search field.
As you are typing, Windows 7 will give you options of what it assumes you
might be looking for. If you don't hear what you want, keep typing.
Don't worry Rosemarie. Your new computer is doing what it's supposed to be
doing.

Hello there;

Well, there's 2 ways you can shutdown;

1, go to desktop and press alt+f4 you will be asked, what you want the
computer to do, so, use arrow key and choose shutdown.

The second way is,
Go to start menu, you hear,
Menu search edit,
Just left arrow you should land on shut down split button, just press enter.

As for the updates?

Yu can find these, by going to desktop,
Highlight computer,
Bring up properties,
Now tab and enter on,
Check for updates,
Then you can tab to see how many updates there are, Or conversely, You can
choose update from the shutdown menu, and the computer will update then shut
down.

Maybe one of the updates is the service pack 1, and you will need to check
that one.

that is simple although the technology is light years away from what we
started with.

Think about that for a moment.
How much of the software on your computer has been downloaded, rather than
installed from a hard disk? Most computers sold today have hard drives that
are at least two hundred and fifty gigabytes in size. That kind of memory
was unheard of even ten years ago. A gigabyte is one thousand megabytes.
One computer expert surmised that there is more memory in personal computers
today than there was in all of the government's computers back in the year,
2000. I believe that one of our list members has a portable hard drive that
is several terabytes in size. A terabyte is one thousand gigabytes.

As time passes, we, as blind computer users, are relying on the
dependability of our computers to provide access to the world around us. In
my opinion, the only way to assure us of reliable download capability is by
obtaining the fastest possible internet service. That is fiber optic for
the moment.

[Blind-Computing] NEW SYSTEM, SPECIAL REQUEST

2011-08-01 Thread John Justice
Not long ago, Doris sent me a zip file which contained the Andre Lewis sound
scheme and the file of sounds which make up that scheme.

She also sent me a link to download a program which unzips 7Zip files.

I'm now working on a completely different computer and I can't figure out
how to transfer the files from one system to another.

I know it's a nuisance, but could you please send along both those bits of
information in one file?

I'd sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

An update on this request. I used a jump drive and copied the original
files so that I can load this sound scape onto my laptop computer.

[Blind-Computing] REPORT ON ALTERNATE SOUND SCHEMES

2011-08-01 Thread John Justice
This might be getting old for some people so I'll try to make it brief.

I have tried some of the other Windows Sound Schemes and I couldn't find any
audible response.

I did create my own scheme called Personal which seems to work well enough.

But I still think that the audio provided by Andre Lewis is the best by far.

One odd thing though. In Windows 7, the Startup and Shut Down sounds which
were created by Andre Lewis don't appear to operate with Windows 7. The
same default sound is present that was in the Windows Default scheme.

All of the other sounds still operate. Weirdest of all, some of those
clicks which identify programs opening up start before the actual Windows
start up music plays.

I'm using Windows 7 Professional by the way.

Okay. That's it people. Thanks very much for your help in locating and
downloading the Andre Lewis scheme.

Re: [Blind-Computing] ANDRE LEWIS SOUND SCAPES FOR WINDOWS 7

2011-07-31 Thread John Justice
As I understand it, it's a sound scape which means that it will just be one
more added to those already in the Sounds and Audio section of the control
panel. If it doesn't work, I'll just go back into that settings display and
load another one which would include the Windows Default, the one Windows 7
uses automatically. There are lots of different sound scapes there. I'm
really curious to see if any of those other ones make a difference.
That remains to be seen.
Even at the worst of times, the speech would still work so these are just
additional sounds which tell you what your computer is doing.

I am stil on xp myself here. I know the sound scheme you are talking
about and am using it myself.

Have you tried installing it under win 7? I do not see why the sounds
should
not work. You can always assign sound events manualy thru the sounds
and audio aplet in control panel.

 Hi group,

He had a great one for Windows XP but I have lost his contact

For those of you who don't know what I mean by a sound scape, this
man created a whole new set of sounds which were much better than the
original Microsoft system. They would tell you what was happening
with your system by executing a different sound for each operation.

I enjoyed it because you could tell whether a file was opening
correctly or was stuck. If something wrong occurred, you would hear
another sound.
Windows 7 does a pretty good job but there is so much more that can
 be added.

If anyone has ideas about improving on the Windows 7 sound scape, I'd
appreciate any guidance I can get.

 Thanks in advance.
