[BlindHandyMan] cement sealers

2006-10-25 Thread brice mijares
Does anyone know if there is such a product as an all in one both tint and
sealer for cement? If so, what colors are out there?

[BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread William Stephan
We had a visit from the contractor who does PMs on our heating and cooling
equipment this morning. The technician found nothing wrong, except that the
furnace filter was in the slot backwards. I've always wondered about whether
there was a right or wrong direction to place these, but I can't for the life
of me tell the diffference by feel.

These are just basic one inch filters with a cardboard frame.
Do any of you folks have techniques for determining this?
Thanks.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread Rob Monitor
Hi, Well what I do is if I can at the time I buy the filters I will ask the
store person to put a piece of tape on the out going side. Also in the past
I've fond that some of the filters have kind of netting on one side but now
I can't remember what side it is

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread Michael Baldwin
On the filters I use, there is card board criss-crossing the back, this side
goes toward the furnace. Because air is not pulled through the part of the
filter that has the criss-crossed card board, a sighted person can see how
dirty or clean the filter is.

brice,
Good morning young fello. My friend did his two years ago and found that
there was very little for choice. If I am remembering correctly White, gray
where the two.
Curiosity would be and the experts here could answer. If you got the tint
that you wanted and the proper temperature.. Could they be mixed to create
the color you wanted? Of course how long would it hold up to the sun rays?
Geno, Portland, ME temp at 33 degrees and snow in the mountains 1500 and

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread Mickey Fixsen
Some of the filters have some sort of reinforcement on one side of them. This
could be a net mesh, cardboard bars, wire or plastic egg crate. If there is
some sort of extra reinforcement on one side that is not on the other, this is
the discharge side of the filter (toward the furnace blower). This helps keep
the filter from collapsing as it gets loaded.

There are still a few filters out there that seem to be the same on both sides.
I'm not sure why it makes a difference which way these are to be installed.

Thanks Geno, I guess I'll go to home depot this weekend and check out what
they have.. Over the last 2 years I've poured about 13 yards of concrete in
my back yard, and my wife said the last pour, the color is a different shade
of gray. I've now have a patio that's 35 feet deep and about 27 feet wide.
We just extended the patio 2 weeks ago. So I have allot of concrete to
cover.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread Robert J. Moore
In my oppinion,
and I am no authority on the subject but in my oppinion the best type of
filter to get is some type of electro static filter that you take out and
flush with water every so often. The frame and screen are made of metal and
I am not sure what material is inside.
I'm sure you can find them at just about any home improvement store.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread one foxy lady
Hi David and others..

I have a Train furnace and air conditioner together and the filter I use is
a 25 by 25 a special one that Train provided. It opens up like a book has a
hook to lock it when closed it's in a metal frame and once open then it
unfolds out for cleaning which they said it can be washed off with water or
use a vacuumed hose and blow it out.
Hope that's helpful to you I haven't had to clean it but once about every 6
months but that might be too I have a air purifier installed as well on the
unit and keeps it pretty clean very little dust and debree collected on it..

 Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

We had a visit from the contractor who does PMs on our heating and cooling
equipment this morning. The technician found nothing wrong, except that
the furnace filter was in the slot backwards. I've always wondered about
whether there was a right or wrong direction to place these, but I can't
for the life of me tell the diffference by feel.

These are just basic one inch filters with a cardboard frame.
Do any of you folks have techniques for determining this?
 Thanks.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Grease on top of my coberts

2006-10-25 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Jim,
I would make sure that your fan filter is clean. Do you have a gas or
electric stove? It's been my experience that gas stoves create more
of a greasy film on ceilings and tops of cupboards. If you fry a lot
of food, you can only prevent build up. If it is kind of bad, you can
use a degreaser to get it initially clean. Then wiping it with a wipe
such as Robert suggested will keep it under control. Another thing
that will clean it is spray'n wash. It also does a great job on
counters and cupboards.

to use and how can I prevent it from happening.

Thanks for any suggestions.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread Jeff Kisecker
The cheep filters it really doesn't matter, but for some of the newer
furnaces they operate more efficiently with a little higher quality filter.
Mine does.

The ones I buy have a material on one side, and a plastic supporting such as
has already been described. They also have a crisscross of either cardboard
or plastic on the same side as the plastic supports. This side goes toward
the furnace fan, the air coming in will have to go through the filter first.

So, there is a specific way to put them in, once you do have them in the
correct way, you can remember when you change them.

Have a good day,

Jeff Kisecker

There is an arrow marked on the end of the cardboard but I can't remember

I don't know if the other sort matters.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking smoke co alarms

2006-10-25 Thread Dale Leavens
Rob, I had to install some here last spring my wife made me!

I think mine are Kidde, I bought the type which are wired in as well as
battery back-up. I have a fourth to install but haven't got to that yet, the
three I have are one in the basement near the furnace and water heater,
another just far enough away from the kitchen to miss the toaster and a
third up stairs outside of our bedroom. I want another in the other upstairs
hall, the cable is in place but I haven't got to cutting into the old
plaster lath ceiling, a dirty business.

These only say fire or carbon dioxide or hush mode in both English and
French. I have managed to set them all off screaming with my router a couple
of times and once with my drum sander.

I also see that they are promoting a talking alarm which you record a
message onto apparently intended to instruct children in case of alarm.

I purchased mine from Canadian Tire but that is probably not appropriate for
you, here are a couple of URLs I have found and pasted from a google search.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread Dale Leavens
Electrostatic filters are pretty expensive and require special installation.
The cartridge itself may be readily exchangeable but usually the furnace
manufacturer also expects you to use a regular mesh filter along with the
electrostatic device.

You can buy reusable filter material, it looks like a three quarters thick
door mat I suppose and these can be washed out and reused and you can buy
the fabric in large pieces. I have never purchased it this way, I am
guessing it would be a little difficult to cut.

I agree with who ever it was said that it isn't critical which way they go
in, the cheaper ones are exactly the same on both sides, the reinforced ones
though are designed as someone already said, to be a little stronger down
stream to hold up as the filter loads up.

I don't change my filters as often as I probably should mostly because I
don't think of it when I am in the area and am too lazy to shift my a** down
there when I do think of it. Occasionally they do belly out a bit.

 In my oppinion,
and I am no authority on the subject but in my oppinion the best type of
filter to get is some type of electro static filter that you take out and
flush with water every so often. The frame and screen are made of metal
 and
I am not sure what material is inside.
I'm sure you can find them at just about any home improvement store.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace filters

2006-10-25 Thread Steve S.
the cheap filters the arrow goes up, cause most all houses has heat units that
the air blows up. In my mobile home, my heat unit, the arrow on the filter goes
down.
No, I have no way knowing which way is up or down unless someone tells me. I
do know that the more high price filters has a cardboard or plastic on them.

  Thanks.

Rob, I had to install some here last spring my wife made me!

I think mine are Kidde, I bought the type which are wired in as well as
battery back-up. I have a fourth to install but haven't got to that yet,
 the
three I have are one in the basement near the furnace and water heater,
another just far enough away from the kitchen to miss the toaster and a
third up stairs outside of our bedroom. I want another in the other
 upstairs
hall, the cable is in place but I haven't got to cutting into the old
plaster lath ceiling, a dirty business.

These only say fire or carbon dioxide or hush mode in both English
 and
French. I have managed to set them all off screaming with my router a
 couple
of times and once with my drum sander.

I also see that they are promoting a talking alarm which you record a
message onto apparently intended to instruct children in case of alarm.

I purchased mine from Canadian Tire but that is probably not appropriate
 for
you, here are a couple of URLs I have found and pasted from a google
 search.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hi there. A new member and blind professional at your service :)

2006-10-25 Thread Mickey Fixsen
Lewis,

I read with great interest, your 2 posts on how to carve an eagle. I found the
descriptions very fun to read and could follow along pretty well. I really
applaud your skills with chain saws.

What I found missing, however, was how you do this as a blind guy. I use chain
saws, quite a bit. Nothing like you do, but I do cut off limbs and even fall
trees on occasion. I have to feel with my left hand, where I want to aim the
chainsaw and then get my hand out of the way and back on the saw before I start
the cut. I would love to hear the tips and techniques that you employ as a
blind guy to get the saw exactly where you want the cut and how you determine
how much you are taking off as you go along. In other words, please include
the blind techniques that you employ with your descriptions. We all would
greatly benefit from them.

Kudos to your skills.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking smoke co alarms

2006-10-25 Thread Dale Leavens
Actually the ones I have just tell you if it is fire or carbon monoxide
which have set off the alarm. As we have two official languages it makes
sure you die to the sound of both official languages. The voice though loud
is of poor quality due to the emitter. With all three sounding at the same
time the row is spectacular. On the other hand, in the night we would never
hear the basement alarm.

The ones onto which you record your own message are claimed to be more
effective for kids presumably because they are reassured by the sound of a
parental voice blaring only approximately comprehensible instructions.

Hi,

I heard this type of filter is such a close net as to really cause
your unit to work extremely hard, reducing its life expectancy.

If this is true, I had rather purchase more disposable filters then
short an the life of my unit.

At 03:15 PM 10/25/2006 -0500, you wrote:

I'm sure you can find them at just about any home improvement store.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking smoke co alarms

2006-10-25 Thread Lee A. Stone

might I suggest you give your local fire department a helping hand by
once a day letting some air flow thru your polace. Both my son and
daughter are on the local fire departement and many many calls for Co
activations and after a complete inspection of the home, keeeping in
mind at least one door and window have been opened. the all clear sign
is given by the fire chief. . If you are lucky enough to have an
outside air exchange set up then you will not have this problem.Lee
