Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure

2010-03-03 Thread Darren Brewer
Hi

The other talking tape measure is called Vox, and can be found by googling Vox
talking tape. It's pretty similar to the cobolt version in terms of
functionality, but only requires a single AA battery. I have both and find them
invaluable. So long as you use good batteries they are quite accurate.

Thanks

Darren.

There pretty much is one talking tape measure around these days. It is
the Cobolt Talking tape measure from www.cobolt.co.uk Several blindness
sites in the states carry it as well. It's about 95 bucks plus or minus a
couple of bucks. It is supposedly accurate to 1/16 of an inch, but many
of us suspect it lies at times.

It takes a nine volt battery, and eats them pretty readily. When the unit
starts acting like it is broken, not turning on easily, giving crazy
measurements, staying out late with it's friends, drinking and smoking, it
usually means it just needs a fresh battery.

It will occasionally not shut the hell up, driving you to near insanity
until you wack it, or yank it's little life blood power supply out.

It is a pretty useful, although sometimes not as usable as you would like,
  tool.

There was another talking tape measure out there, but it appears to be
hard to come by these days. You will know if you have found that other
one, if it takes double a batteries instead of 9 volts.

  Good luck.

Darren,

This is good info to know as I own the Cobolt. What I like the sounds of
with the Vox is it runs on a single AA battery which I have tons of
rechargeables around. My guess would be the AA battery model goes through
batteries even quicker than the 9 volt version?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure

2010-03-03 Thread Darren Brewer
Hi

Well I've never sat down and done a comparism so can't say for sure, but I
don't think there is much difference. Obviously the power consumption of the
Vox is less which makes it more efficient in terms of battery use.

I haven't used my cobolt measure for a long time now and always had a couple of
rechargeable PP3s on the go. I have a large number of cheap AA batteries and
tend to use those in the Vox measure. However, I always release the battery
compartment when not in use. The trouble with a lot of electronic gadgets these
days is that they don't have a real on/off switch anymore so there is always a
quicent current being used. Very rare to find gadgets with real mechanical
on/off switches.

Darren.

I found this quite interesting. I think that I need a battery tester. A few
weeks ago my Cobalt stopped working. This one is actually broke. I then took

my backup that was repaired a year or so ago. Put in a brand new battery and

it did not work. I then assumed that it was never correctly repaired so
ordered another. When that one arrived I put in another new battery from the

package and it did not work. It gave some off the wall numbers. I was
planning on returning all three units. Two for repair and the two day old
one back to Maxiaids since it did not work when I opened it.
The other day at Sam's Club Karen purchased a pack of ten 9v batteries. I
put one in the new unit and it works great. Today out of curiosity I put
another new one in the backup and it works great. I never thought that a new

pack of batteries would have two bad ones in the pack of two.
The one that stopped working a few weeks ago was not fixed with a new
battery. That unit will shortly be going across the big pond.

Tom, yes the battery packs do have expiration dates. This particular ever
ready pack had a date pretty far into 2010. I should have known that Karen
looks for expiration dates on everything. I never met anyone who reads
labels like she does. I wish that I would have kept the package.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure

2009-11-23 Thread chiliblindman
Lenny, I had trouble with a unit and I got a new 6 pack of batteries and all
were bad. I should not say bad, the voltage was to low for it too work.
They powered one other item and nothing else. After checking it out with
different items and more new batteries, I found out it was the battery
connector which was a fraction smaller and the fit was loose, or just to
loose to give proper voltage. No more cheap batteries for good tools. Now
I buy the more expensive ones regardless of brand. It seems slightly off
size get sold for less regardless of brand.

Yes it is made by Bosch.

A number of years ago I had a digital tape measure with an LCD display which I
was able to read. The vox tape looks very simlar, except that it has no LCD.
Maybe the talking version was the next step in it's evolution.

Not true, there is anothertalking tape I believe made in Germany which is
similar
but uses 2 AA batteries and has lower quality speech.

Also has some differences in operation but it's nearly a knockoff.

More expensive i believe and I've no reason to believe it would be any more
  reliable.

Matt,
there are rulers that have a sliding centering gizmo built in. these are
for sightlings, but for centering should work.
they look like an old fashioned flat ruler but have a moving pointer on one
edge and another that lies between the pointer and one end. this second
pointer follows the center of the distance covered by the end pointer.

I think they're found in stationary stores.

Unless I'm dreaming!

Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure

2009-10-20 Thread Matt
Well, you are tenacious.
After I bought my first one and it didn't last long, I gave up on them all
together.
Too much money for something which didn't work.
But I loved the idea of it.

Well, I am quite upset with the cobolt talking tape measures. About a year
ago I was in the middle of a project and my talking tape measure went South.
So I ordered a replacement and sent the broken one across the big pond for
repair. When it came back I just put it away for a backup. Well today in the
middle of another project the second unit totally went goofy. I replaced the
battery and it worked for a while. Then I had the tape out about 15 inches
and the unit told me 4 and 3/8 inches. Left it shut off and then pulled out
the tape a few inches and was told that it is 1/4 inch. And now it won't
talk. So I pulled out the one that was repaired and it does not talk, that
is what I sent back to have fixed. I guess I will purchase another and send
  these two back for repair.
When I send them back I will send them free matter. That is the way that the
last one was sent to me. Once before I had the first unit repaired and it
cost me $35 for shipping. So this time I will use the free matter as I did
the last time. It did not add that much time and I am in no hurry to get
them back since I will have one shipped secondday.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure

2009-10-20 Thread Tom Hodges
Those talking tapes drive me nuts.

I do know that if you turn it off when the tape is not fully retracted, it
thinks that it is at the zero position. For example, if the tape is pulled
out to 8 inches and you turn it on it will think it is at zero inches. Then
if you pull it out 4 nore inches to the 12 inch position, it will think it
is at four inches.

The answer to this problem, of course, is to make sure the tape is retracted
all the way efore you turn it on.

What also drives me crazy is how often it turns itself off. When measuring,
if you don't fast, it will turn off and you have to start over.

I think the reason they don't do anything to improve the talking tape

Now, if they would create a talking click rule? hahah,
I am considering buying a second click rule.
So many things I have to center.
I've been clampping the click rule to my pieces, and using it to center, and
sometimes I have to push the piece back and forth until I am satisfied that it
is as close to center as possible.

I second that. I still have one sitting on the shelf cause the little

if it is the exact same brand, but certainly has the same voice.

 Subject: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure

Well, I am quite upset with the cobolt talking tape measures. About
 a year
ago I was in the middle of a project and my talking tape measure
 went South.
So I ordered a replacement and sent the broken one across the big
 pond for
repair. When it came back I just put it away for a backup. Well
 today in the
middle of another project the second unit totally went goofy. I
 replaced the
battery and it worked for a while. Then I had the tape out about 15
 inches
and the unit told me 4 and 3/8 inches. Left it shut off and then
 pulled out
the tape a few inches and was told that it is 1/4 inch. And now it
 won't
talk. So I pulled out the one that was repaired and it does not
 talk, that
is what I sent back to have fixed. I guess I will purchase another
 and send
 these two back for repair.
When I send them back I will send them free matter. That is the way
 that the
last one was sent to me. Once before I had the first unit repaired
 and it
cost me $35 for shipping. So this time I will use the free matter as
 I did
the last time. It did not add that much time and I am in no hurry to
 get
them back since I will have one shipped secondday.

[BlindHandyMan] Talking tape Measure

2009-10-20 Thread RJ
Have one and think it is great and accurate. Here is the info on it.
RJ

Cobolt Talking Tape Measure Description and Operating Instructions
Talking tape measure General Description and Operation
The features of your tape measure are described below assuming that you are
holding the device with its sloping edge to the upper left and the belt clip
facing away from you.

Button Location and Function
There are five buttons on the front face of the case. Two large ones on the
top row and three smaller ones on the bottom row. Pressing any of these will
have the effect of turning the unit on. If the tape is not fully retracted
when you turn the unit on you will hear a warning message.

The top left button will advise you of the total distance stored in the
memory. If you press it twice within two seconds the memory will be cleared.

The top right button is used to switch between feet and inches, millimetres,
centimetres and metres. This button will also convert any measurements
between these units.

The bottom left button adds the current reading to the memory. The maximum
distance which can be stored in the memory is nine hundred and ninety nine
metres.

The bottom centre button re-sets the tape to zero. This can be done with the
tape extended to enable you to compare sizes. It is also possible to measure
negative distances in situations where the second measurement is less than
the first.

The bottom right button adds the width of the case to the measurement.
Normally the spoken distance represents the length of tape which has been
pulled out but sometimes it is more convenient to use the back edge of the
case -
for example if you wish to measure the internal width of a door frame. A
second press of this button deducts the case width and returns the reading
to normal.

If the tape is fully retracted the unit will turn itself off after ten
seconds. If the tape is extended this will happen after thirty seconds. In
either event you will be warned five seconds before turn off. Once the tape
measure has turned off the current measurement will be lost but the contents
of the memory will remain intact.

Extending and Retracting The Tape
The tape can be felt protruding from the bottom left edge of the case. To
extend the tape it should be pulled out to the left. The flat sloping edge
is a button used to retract the tape. This should be pressed at its lower
edge.

WARNING. Use your free hand to control the speed at which the tape retracts.
If left free it may retract rapidly and cause injury.

Using The Tape Measure To Describe an Arc
On the bottom edge of the case you will feel a deep groove slightly to the
right of centre, running front to back. The right side of the base can be
pressed open using a fingernail in this groove. This flap can then be opened
fully until it is in line with the base. You will feel a sharp metal point
on this flap which can be used as a pivot if you wish to describe an arc
with the tape.
For measurement purposes the point is the same distance from the back of the
case as the first hole in the tape is from the end of the tape so if you
place the point of a pencil in the first hole and use this to draw a circle
or arc the radius will be the measurement spoken which includes the case.
i.e. to draw a one metre radius circle extend the tape until it says one
metre including case.

Battery
The battery compartment is on the rear of the case. To remove the cover hold
the case back uppermost with the sloping edge facing away from you. Support
the case with your fingers underneath and your thumbs on top on the flat
section closer to you than the belt clip.
You will feel the ribbed surface of the battery cover under your thumbs.

With your thumbs as close as possible to the edge of the raised section
press firmly down with your thumbs to release the catches and slide the
cover off towards you.

Re-fitting is done by sliding the cover back until it engages with an
audible click.
A replacement battery is available from Vision Australia under product code
CP17.

Further Details and Specifications:
List of 5 items
. Tape Length 16 feet/5 metres.
. Max in Memory 999 Metres.
. Accuracy 16th of an inch/1mm.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking tape measure

2009-10-20 Thread Matt
Just a clip out of the file which talks about the two.

The Rotomatic. The Rotomatic consists of a six and a half-inch long threaded
steel rod with a large rotating rectangular measuring nut or fence that can be
moved precisely along the threads and locked in place with a hexagonal locking
nut. The dimensions of the rectangular measuring nut are five-eighths inches
wide by fifteen-sixteenths inches long and exactly one-quarter inch thick.
There is a scored line or notch on the side of the measuring nut. When that
notch points up, the nut is at a measurement that is an exact multiple of
one-sixteenth inch, either zero, one-sixteenth, one-eighth, three-sixteenths,
one-quarter, five-sixteenths, three-eighths, etc. The three-eighths inch
diameter threaded rod has raised threads at every half-inch interval to
tactually determine the half-inch increments. The Rotomatic threads are
machined precisely one-sixteenth inch apart so that a full turn of the
measuring nut moves it one-sixteenth inch, a half turn moves it
one-thirty-second inch, a quarter turn moves it one-sixty-fourth inch and a
lesser turn moves it proportionately even a shorter distance. The Rotomatic can
measure with an accuracy of one-sixty-fourth-inch and it can be used to
transfer any non-numeric distance.

I think it is somewhat similar to a click ruler but I don't know what it is.

HI, I have two different kinds of the talking tape measures. One has the 9 volt
battery and the other one has the AA battery. The AA battery one is I think the
better of the two. My 9 volt one does all kinds of wild things and eats up
batteries really bad... Can not remember the names of them right now and would
have to do a lot of looking to find the names...

the 9 volt one if the Cobolt from england.
The Aa battery one is a german knockoff, I believe available

they use the same speech but the German one is much poorer quality.
but they're based on the same technologies and tape reading
techniques.

The german one is more expensive.
both seem to have varriable reputations, some love and some

[BlindHandyMan] Talking tape measure

2007-08-19 Thread Barry Levine

Howdy Folks,

I received my talking tape measure from LS and S Group this week. It's the
kind which takes a double-A battery.

It appears to be a well-made tape measure... Easy to use and accurate when
validated against a regular tape measure. It even comes in a nice zippered
pouch with a belt clip. You'll need someone with working eyes to read the
sheet of operating instructions. While it is easy to use, there are several
buttons and their use is not initially intuitive.
The only real complaint I have is, as always with adaptive products for
blind and VI populations, the talking tape measure is not inexpensive.
After tax and shipping costs, the total came to over $140.00. Someone with
working eyes can get the same job done for $7.99.

If interested, see...

[BlindHandyMan] Talking Tape Measure Instructions

2007-08-01 Thread Ray Boyce
This is for the Cobolt Talking Tape Measure.
Talking tape measure

General Description and Operation

The features of your tape measure are described below assuming that you are
holding the device with its sloping edge to the upper left and the belt clip
facing away from you.

This button will also convert any measurements
between
these units.

Normally the spoken distance represents the length of tape which has been
pulled
out but sometimes it is more convenient to use the back edge of the case -
for example if you wish to measure the internal width of a door frame. A
second
press of this button deducts the case width and returns the reading to
normal.

If the tape is fully retracted the unit will turn itself off after ten
seconds. If the tape is extended this will happen after thirty seconds. In
either
event you will be warned five seconds before turn off. Once the tape measure
has turned off the current measurement will be lost but the contents of the
memory will remain intact.

The tape can be felt protruding from the bottom left edge of the case. To
extend the tape it should be pulled out to the left. The flat sloping edge
is
a button used to retract the tape. This should be pressed at its lower edge.

WARNNG. Use your free hand to control the speed at which the tape retracts.
If left free it may retract rapidly and cause injury.

On the bottom edge of the case you will feel a deep groove slightly to the
right of centre, running front to back. The right side of the base can be
prised
open using a fingernail in this groove. This flap can then be opened fully
until it is in line with the base. You will feel a sharp metal point on this
flap which can be used as a pivot if you wish to describe an arc with the
tape.

For measurement purposes the point is the same distance from the back of the
case as the first hole in the tape is from the end of the tape so if you
place
the point of a pencil in the first hole and use this to draw a circle or arc
the radius will be the measurement spoken which includes the case. i.e. to
draw a one metre radius circle extend the tape until it says one metre
including case.

With your thumbs as close as possible to the edge of the raised section
press firmly
down with your thumbs to release the catches and slide the cover off towards
you.

Re-fitting is done by sliding the cover back until it engages with an
audible click.

A replacement battery is available from Vision Australia under product code
CP17.

[BlindHandyMan] Talking Tape Measure

2007-07-31 Thread Barry Levine

Honest to God, I'm going to have to stop reading this list. You guys cost
me money.

I just ordered this talking tape measure... After all is said and done...
140 bucks!
Adaptation sure costs.

As long as I have your attention, does anyone know where I can get those
5-gallon bucket canvas pocket organizers? Does anyone have these things?
Are they of any quality?
