My experience tells me that if I want a long lasting, reliable balun (good
quality components and workmanship that withstand the elements), it's more cost

I found a MFJ model - MFJ-1982HP is rated for 800pep
https://mfjenterprises.com/products/mfj-1982hp

This antenna is available in three power ratings:
MFJ-1982LP – 30w
MFJ-1982MP – 300w
MFJ-1982HP – 800w

Anyone have experience with this antenna?

A couple of questions –

  1. If you have experience with high power (>= 600w) transformers for EFHW
antennas, what design did you use
 * Core type and number of cores
*type 53 has a higher curie temp as opposed to type 43
 *   Wire AWG?
 *   I see a number of YouTube videos recommending 56:1 as 49:1
*   Comments?

  1. What is your recommended wire for the radiation element?
 *   Material –

i. Copper over steel?

   ii. Hard-drawn copper?

  iii. Other

b.AWG?

i. Number of Strands &
strand count?

c. Jacket material

d. Other?

Quick Update……

After several weeks of flight from the BVARC Field Day site, it appears we
haven’t heard from the balloon in over a week now, so it’s probably down for
the count.

It was certainly a very interesting flight with all the backwards trips it was
making. 

As we close the books on this one, we are already testing more trackers as I
type, as well as testing a NEW tracking/reporting application script for
extracting and propagating the information into all the formal reporting sites.

So much more to come. Below is a snapshot of the full flight.

Many thanks for allowing the South Texas Balloon Launch Team participate in

Truth be known, just about every component on the trackers we fly today,
already come from China. We’re just sending them back to them. 

As far as the software/firmware, it’s Open Source, and published on multiple
publicly accessible github sites.

So that immediately gets around any potential ITAR restrictions that might come
into play.

Several other trackers are built in Turkey and other places overseas that also
have been cleared for sending to other countries.

So we’re all good.

Now, that’s not to say that someone couldn’t do something very different and
risk multiple violations of course, but I think we’re still several years away
from the IC’s we use in or devices being manufactured in the US, if they ever
do at all. And if they do, they will STILL be made over there as well, so
there’s nothing secret about these.

As far as the Mac machines, if anyone can make me a Mac that can come in
weighing less than 12 grams, I’ll take a thousand of those right now. 

Many thanks for allowing the South Texas Balloon Launch Team participate in
Field Day with you guys.

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

Re: [BVARC] High power EFHW Antenna/ MFJ-1982HP

2023-08-15 Thread Sean - N5LNK via BVARC
I have the MP version and love it. I made many DX contacts with it. I have had
it in a couple different configurations. When I was able to string it out
straight I had no problems with it getting out on 10-80m running 100w on my
FT991a. The squirrels recently sent it to the ground for me so I am now looking
into another location to put it back on the air as my main antenna.

[BVARC] High power EFHW Antenna/ MFJ-1982HP

2023-08-15 Thread mike.williams shopjubilee.com via BVARC
Time to pick your brains…

I am interested in EFHW antennas for primary use on 20/40/80m – but want to be
able to run my Worthmore 600w amplifier.
I found a MFJ model - MFJ-1982HP is rated for 800pep
https://mfjenterprises.com/products/mfj-1982hp

This antenna is available in three power ratings:
MFJ-1982LP – 30w
MFJ-1982MP – 300w
MFJ-1982HP – 800w

Anyone have experience with this antenna?

A couple of questions –

  1. If you have experience with high power (>= 600w) transformers for EFHW
antennas, what design did you use
 * Core type and number of cores
*type 53 has a higher curie temp as opposed to type 43
 *   Wire AWG?
 *   I see a number of YouTube videos recommending 56:1 as 49:1
*   Comments?

  1. What is your recommended wire for the radiation element?
 *   Material –

i. Copper over steel?

   ii. Hard-drawn copper?

  iii. Other

b.AWG?

i. Number of Strands &
strand count?

c. Jacket material

d. Other?

Your guidance is appreciated!

HamTestOnline.Com is still in business. It is an effective training system. I
bought 2 new students the course to become Hams. It is simple to learn, and at
your own pace. I am sure other training systems are at least equivalent, but
this is the one I know that my students learn from easiest at this moment. And
at $20 - $30 per course, I can afford to buy it for them in order to get new
Hams into our world.

the best way would be to actually read the licensing page that everyone skips
when they install software. there can be notices not to export in there.
the CIA publishes guidelines on what level of encryption can be exported. (
they can crack everything else).
I may not be easy, but I would hate to be arrested because my Balloon had
something on it that it should not.

Many thanks for allowing the South Texas Balloon Launch Team participate in
Field Day with you guys.

All the best,

Walter/K5WH

the best way would be to actually read the licensing page that everyone
skips when they install software. there can be notices not to export in
there.
the CIA publishes guidelines on what level of encryption can be exported.
( they can crack everything else).
I may not be easy, but I would hate to be arrested because my Balloon had
something on it that it should not.

this actually brings up a good point, it is illegal to send devices with
very current encryption to foreign nations, I know you would not think
there is anything on a balloon that is privileged but there are many things

think some care should be used to make sure that a balloon once captured by
