Re: [BVARC] masts & towers

2022-03-31 Thread D. Howard Bingham via BVARC
Didn't a BVARC MEMBER years ago take out a PERMIT in a Fort Bend County
community to erect an antenna tower in his back yard, hire a contractor
to drill foundation & erect a tower, & after permitted & constructed
have a neighbor complain about the tower which IIRC was partially
concealed by trees, to end up being taken to court & have the permit
revoked & required to take it down..?  IIRC, the case eventually ended
up in FEDERAL COURT, yet to spite the operator WON IN THE COURT, was not
awarded any damages & his wife who worked for either the CITY or COUNTY
lost her job.!

I forget the member, but recall it was subject to a BVARC CLUB MEETING.!

BTW: My solution to a 10 meter ham antenna in my APARTMENT, was to
install a 1/2 wave 10m Di-pole inside my apartment along back wall
ceiling & enjoyed many QSO's on 10m & was an active participant on 10-10
SHOT NET ..

I'm not saying anything.  I asked a question.

I've heard that you're supposed to get a permit before constructing a
tower, even in the country.  Is that true?  I have no idea.

A permit is just a piece of paper.  I don't really care about it
because it probably doesn't matter.  What does matter is whether or
not you took appropriate care in the design of your tower and
antenna.  Truth be told, I don't really care about that, either, but
you should.  Look, the human race has spent many hundreds of years
figuring out how to make tall things that don't fall over.  To that
end, techniques have been established for constructing towers (just to
pick an example at random) that aren't likely to fall over except
under the most extreme circumstances.  If you don't know what
conditions would cause your tower to fall, then you should find that
out and determine if those conditions are likely to happen.  I happen
to know a fellow who did not take proper care building a tower and
antenna system very much like yours and his tower fell over and
damaged his house.  I wouldn't want to be that guy.

Another understanding I have is that there are legal requirements for
setbacks and such that are intended to make sure that your tower can't
harm your neighbors even in the event of a failure.  Part of the
permitting process is to make sure all such legal requirements are
met.  Meeting those requirements can help keep you out of trouble
should bad things occur.  You may not be able to move to someplace
that doesn't have an HOA, but you probably can choose a house that has
a yard big enough to hold a modest tower.

Neal, please don't take this the wrong way.  I'm not saying that you
did anything wrong.  I'm mostly writing to the other people who might
be reading this and thinking about putting up a tower.  If this is
you, please get some help if you don't know what you're doing.
Actually, I think you should probably get some help even if you do.  A
second pair of eyes can make for some cheap reassurance, and a second
set of hands will definitely make the work easier.

cause damage should it ever blow over (or get knocked over).  I may
put this thing between my house and the neighbor's house, and I don't
want it breaking stuff.  I was looking at carbon fiber telescoping
masts last night, and that may be a good option.  They're pricey,
which I'm not thrilled about, but they are supposedly stronger/stiffer
than aluminum.

If you attend any area Hamfest with an ARRL forum, John Stratton N5AUS
(ARRL board member and civil trial attorney) will tell you that an HOA
is no excuse for putting up an antenna.  He can feed you ammunition if
there is an issue with your HOA.

My HOA has a vague statement about antennas 10 ft higher than the
highest point on my house.  With that in mind and a "it's better to
ask forgiveness than permission " attitude, for the past 20 years I
have had antennas up to 20 ft in height attached yp my chimney.   This
past year I got tired of dealing with my extension ladder and put four
sections of Motorola/ Rohn 35 in the ground about 6 feet.  So that's
about 34 feet above ground.  I recently came across a good deal on a
Hygain TH-3JRS and I also have a 4 element 2 meter beam side mounted.

I have never received a complaint... except for grass growing in the
sidewalk cracks.

I also converted my 10 meter 5/8 wave Siro Toronado to a 30 meters and
it's mounted on a 10 ft pole, so that's also about 35' to the top.  My
12 meter diy vertical is also at about 30 feet.  I'm working on a 60
meter vertical that will use an insulated push-up pole that will be
about 43' high.

According to N5AUS,  all property owners in the United States are
guaranteed the right to display Ol' Glory.  That flag pole can be 33
feet tall and have coax attached.

I hate stupid rules and enjoy pushing the limits.  Some people drive
the speed limit - I never have.

For those that say "don't buy a house in a HOA"  - I challenge you to
purchase a (decent and reasonably priced) house in the Houston area,
in an acceptable school district, and close to work, that's not in an HOA.

Hi, BVARC!

I'm curious as to what others are doing for masts/towers. I'm in an
HOA ("no antennas") with a tiny little yard. Nobody has complained so
far about my homebrew "DX Commander" style fan vertical, which looks
like a 31' jackite pole (because that's pretty much what it is, with
some 3d-printed wire spreaders).  I was holding that up w/ a 5' piece
of 3/4 copper water pipe driven halfway into the ground.  Worked for
several months, but the wind finally bent the pipe.  I have some 5'
electrical conduit that looks a little tougher, but I may resort to
guying.  The metal inside the bottom of the fiberglass pole, I
suspect, interferes with my 10m element, anyway...

I'm also wanting to put my Ed Fong DBJ-1 (which looks like a 5' PVC
pipe) up with the feedpoint 25-30'.  I picked up a couple of old
tires, and I'm thinking of filling one with concrete (think tetherball
pole) and mounting a couple of pieces of angle iron in the concrete,
so I can drill holes, put some sort of mast between them, and make a
"tilt over" base/hinge for the mast.  Has anybody built a
self-supporting (non-guyed) 30 foot mast out of, say, some sort of
stock from Home Depot/Lowe's?  The internet has lots of stories about
using chain link fence top rail (10' sections), but most say that 2 of
those (20') is all you join before it gets super wobbly.  Would love
to use some sort of square tube - maybe nesting sections - but not
sure where to get 10' sections, and not sure aluminum would be strong
enough or steel would be light enough...

Anyway, that's where I am.  I thought I'd float this out there to

The use of_*INDIVIDUAL PASSWORDS should be required to access MEMBERSHIP
LIST*__*S*_.

If you use your ARRL address, be aware that REPLIES to messages using
the ARRL address, will be from YOUR ISP address (NOT ARRL>)

Likewise, all that's needed to access your street or mailing address, is
to access the FCC Database & lookup your FCC assigned CALL SIGN,

everything that's on the LICENSE APPLICATION IS PUBLIC RECORD.

If you don't want your street address and phone numbers to show up on a
highway billboard, BE AWARE IF YOU PUT IT IN YOUR LICENSE

APPLICATION, it's there for everyone to see.

Hello all!

So I just did a Google search of my call sign (which I will

was my personal email to the club list. I was... kinda shocked
and surprised. I was under the impression these emails were
for club members ONLY. Apparently this email list is posted to
the public and I'm concerned about that. I have personal
information in my signature (name, phone number etc. which may
be used to send me spam calls) that could easily be parsed by
an algorithm... This seems like a major security issue to me
and should be fixed. I have to wonder who is sending these
emails to this website??? If the club is doing this they
should inform us that anything we say on this list is not a
private email but a public statement to all of the internet
and everyone on the planet.

I would appreciate some feedback on this and how this email I
sent to the club was posted publicly on the internet for all
the world to see Maybe this is the intent of the club, but
I will certainly think twice about sending anything out now
and censoring my email signature. This must be laid out
clearly to all new members.

everything I get, but this seems like an extremely important
thing to tell folks... I've been a member for about 2 months

needs to be more transparency if this is how it is.

Programming some of today's small HT's next to impossible without a
computer.

Fortunately my older ICOM w-32a not only came with RT Systems programing
& computer interface cable, but in event manual programming necessary,
the buttons easily readable & no more difficult to manually program
without a computer.

NOW if only I could get a battery that would last longer, as those

Hello all,

I'm Sheikh "Kori" Rahman (KI5MKU), I just joined the BVARC last
Saturday when I took my exams and I wanted to go ahead and introduce
myself to everyone. I am an Aerospace Engineer by education (Masters
in AE from GA Tech 2011), with some experience in the Oil and Gas
industry. Currently living in Sugar Land, TX. I have been aware of the
amateur radio hobby for a long time but never took the steps to apply
until last month. Having been unemployed for a good while now, I have
taken up a lot of self-study in this time. While studying tensor
analysis I realized just how similar the equations of fluid dynamics
were to Maxwell's equations, and so I started learning more about
electromagnetic waves. One thing led to another and "The Algorithm"
suggested HAM radio, so I went ahead and took the leap. I contacted
Mark (K5MGJ) about testing, studied on YouTube and HamStudy.org for a
month and passed my Tech and General. I will be studying Gordon West's
(WB6NOA) book for the Extra class exam and plan to take it next month.

Looks like there are a lot of very smart folks in this club and I hope
to learn a lot from and hopefully contribute to the club as well.
Right now my main interests are exploring digital modes, and
RACES/ARES emergency communications. I have been programming and
building circuits projects since I was about 12 and I like making
random programs for fun. The more I learn about HAM the more I realize
I should have done this a long time ago! So I really want to learn
about the digital modes and maybe at some point contribute to the
software that exists or create more. I'm no stranger to RaspberryPi,
Arduino and other microcontrollers, which in my preliminary overview
of HAM appear to be used a lot. For now I've just got my cheap little
BaoFeng UV-5R which I have programmed using CHIRP. Hope to upgrade to
maybe a mobile UHF/VHF unit soon. I would like to try HF at some point
down the road as well, because the idea of off-grid long range
communication sounds really cool to me.

I have a long list of hobbies so I'll spare you unless anyone is
interested. However, if there are any Korean speakers please contact
me. Anyway, that's my spiel, feel free to contact me by responding to
this email or directly. I will be attending the ZOOM meeting tonight
as well. Thanks! 73s everyone!

I have no problem hitting the repeater from Deer Park, Tx. with an ICOM
W32A & that's easily 35+ miles away.

As Robert says, you've got a radio, antenna or COAX problem.

I used to have no problem hitting the repeater from my pickup with a 1/4
wave 18" long mag mount on the top of my old pickup when I was still
able to drive.  (BTW: I have a Kenwood TMG-707A DIRT CHEAP if you need a

I have been testing out my equipment against the emergency nets, and find my
reach to be pretty weak from the house (50 W from the Car); Missouri City.
Could not even touch the 146.940 ARES SW repeater or the Red Cross. I want
to be able to confidently reach the local emergency repeaters.

To get out better, I am considering adding a Firestik antenna above my TV
antenna (yes, we are cheap) for the house. This is going to involve about 75
ft of coax unfortunately. These I have found, but I am open to any
thoughts.

Mainly, I am looking for a used 2-m station, and was wondering if anyone has
one they might want to part with.

I may be open to a used (HOA discreet) antenna too.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

First full week of ownership & use:

Since dumping my problem-plagued IC-7610 (display issues, now on
my 3^rd screen) in favor of a new Kenwood TS-890S I’ve had a few
folks ask me to comment on it.  What follows is just some rambling
observations and comments about the beautiful new rig in my shack.

Most noticeable is the Kenwood 890 is much larger and heavier than
the IC-7610.

It’s also gorgeous!

By comparison, here are the approximate sizes of each rig that’s
been in my shack lately.

The IC-7300 at 316 cu. in.  (9½ x 9½ x 3½) plus knobs &
connectors, 9¼ lbs

The IC-7610 at 683 cu. in.  (13½ x 11 x 4½) plus knobs &
connectors, 18.7 lbs

The TS-890s at 1151 cu in.  (15½ x 13½ x 5½) plus knobs &
connectors, 35 lbs

And similar to the little 7300, the 890 also has a very nice matte
finish, including the display screen.

If you like knobs & buttons, you’re going to like the 890, with a
compliment of *_72_* individual pushbuttons and a total of 8 knobs
on the front panel, counting the VFO.  Of the knobs, 5 of those
are dual shaft (dual purpose) and every one of them has a very
solid, good quality feel to it.  None of the knobs have any
pushbutton function. They only move two directions, either
clockwise or counter-clockwise.

In terms of menus, all I can say is I’m impressed!  If you’re the
type who feels the need for complete control over every single
facet of operation, the new 890 is definitely your rig. Just from
the main display screen there are over 160 configurable option
settings.  The average ham will never use most of them (I only
used 46 myself), but if you like to customize things, you can
customize to your heart’s content. But don’t be intimidated, as
the menus are pretty well laid out and NONE of the optional
settings are even required, as the rig works fine straight out of
the box. Hook it up and enjoy!

There’s a nice printed manual in the box, but while handy for
making pencil notes, I have to say that I found the owner’s manual
a little difficult to navigate at first. Most of you will want to
download an electronic (PDF) copy of the manual so you can spend
less time looking for some of the more esoteric settings.

Before taking the initial plunge into the menus, a word of caution
is in order. Something you’ll definitely want to make into *_Job #
1_* is to learn how to make a backup of your settings and then
start making regular recurring backups every time you configure
another feature.  Not likely that you’ll mess anything up, but if
a 3^rd party software glitch acts like it has bricked your rig, as
the RoMac CWid’er did mine, you’ll need to perform a full factory
reset and without a backup of your settings you’ll scream loud
enough that neighbors a block away will hear you. So the buzzword
of the hour is *_backup_*, *_backup_* and *_backup_!*

There’s really no certain order in which to configure your desired
settings, so once you’re ready, just pick something and go for it.
I made my maiden voyage into the menus by learning how to set up
the clock & how to display both local

how the antennas looked just before I left for the evening. It is a
really great picture seeing the antennas in the air with a sun set as
a back drop.

Thanks to Bill Cordell, the CW room is just right on the temperature –
really cold! I don’t think there will be any complaints about the
conditions in the CW room this year other than – “ can someone turn up
the thermostat, Its freezing in here!”. The SSB room will also have
supplement air conditioning as well so  this year should be the
coolest operators yet (really bad, isn’t it)!

The GOTA station antenna is up as well as a beverage antenna. I did
not found out who put up the beverage antenna but it is a really big
one. I will have to find out and let everyone know tomorrow.

Last but not least, the culinary expertise of Daphne, Kelli and Anita
were brought together Friday night. They had custom made sandwiches
with chips and a choice of lemon pound cake or chocolate cookies. With
personal service they have brought the meal service up several
notches. The culinary team will be making home made breakfast tacos in
the morning. They will be served in the “CW Bistro” from 8am to 10 am.
The team will then have lunch from noon to 2 pm also being served in
the CW Bistro. Then don’t forget Saturday night’s dinner from 5 pm to
7 pm. With BBQ brisket and sausage from Rudy’s, the evening meal will
make sure no one goes home hungry.

Hope to see everyone at Duhascek Park on Saturday.

*The National Institute of Standards and Technology Radio Station WWV
*will be celebrating its 100-year anniversary in October 2019. The
oldest continuously operating radio station in the world deserves a
grand celebration.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the
Northern Colorado Amateur Radio Club (NCARC) have reached an agreement
and are working together to organize the event.

NIST will focus on the plans for Tuesday, October 1, when they will host
a recognition ceremony and an open house at the radio station north of
Fort Collins.

NCARC will operate a special event amateur radio station, call
sign*/WW0WWV/*, on the WWV property starting September 28 and going
24-hours a day through October 2. The goal is to make as many U.S. and
world-wide contacts during the 120-hour period as possible, using
multiple bands and multiple modes on at least 4 simultaneous
transmitters. The effort will require hundreds of volunteer operators.
Information on the Special Events Station visit: http://wwv100.com

Re: [BVARC] I’m looking for an editable copy (not PDF) of the BVARC Membership Form.

2019-04-08 Thread D. Howard Bingham via BVARC
I don't have, but would be a good idea to include a membership form for
renewals & ATTRACTING NEW MEMBERS on the web site.

We used to have one in the "Newsletter" years ago, it would be a good
idea to return an application form to the newsletter at least quarterly.
(A simple application only takes up 1/2 a page.)

When I first joined BVARC in 2003, it was through an application form in
the BVARC newsletter that was left at Houston Amateur Radio Supply when
at original location in Spring.  This should be a good idea to bring up
at the BVARC BOD meeting, as membership count has been slipping in
recent years.

A printable form ought to be included in the website and on Facebook
page. Facebook and the web page SHOULD have this information, as the
younger generation is more "Social Media" friendly..  ECHO Society
really has been sliding in recent years, don't know what membership is
currently, but they are no longer meeting at The Red Cross & MARTY has
been President for as long as I can remember...

I haven't been to a BVARC meeting for years, Gerry Mueller used to pick
me up occasionally, I can't remember the last meeting I attended & it
has been about 3 years since

I last attended Hamfest.

BVARC Roster - Discussion:
Bvarc provides a roster of current and recently expired members on the
bvarc.org website.
1.) ease of contacting other members.
2.) ease to see when or if you are about to expire.

BVARC also provides a list of members that are Board members as well as
lists
of members that have won awards in the past. As well as a list of silent
keys (SK).
(on the who is page)

A public roster is pretty standard in Ham radio (callbooks, QRZ website,
FCC lookup)
and in the past, BVARC even used to post roster info
in some of the early newsletters ( before there was a website )

Recently with the digital age some concerns about privacy have come up.

Our membership roster can currently display records
PUBLICLY
NO PHONE
or
NO LIST AT ALL (this lists name and call only with no address or phone)

But another idea has been to make the Roster Password protected so only
members with the correct password can see the roster.

Currently only the ADMINS can see the entire unrestricted member list
(password protected) but the general public can see the slightly restricted
current roster.

My personal opinion is not many people even know the roster is there,
(it isnt used much) and if we had a member password no one would remember
it.

I would love to hear what the general membership thinks about this.

Re: [BVARC] Fwd: [SETXSWLaHam] Texas bill could restrict mobile ham radio!

2019-01-13 Thread D. Howard Bingham via BVARC
In West University Place and Southside Place, it's only if you have a
cell phone "IN HANDS" when stopped for a moving violation, will you get
ticketed for using a cell phone while driving.

West University Place first started enforcing NO CELL PHONE USE in
School zones, then later adopted the NO CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING city
wide, the penalty is "DOUBLE FINE" for whatever reason you were stopped
for, typically $ 250. for speeding, if caught with a cell phone "IN
HAND", that converts to a $ 500.00 ticket & goes on your driving record.

I know of cab drivers who have lost their job due to this, 3 strikes &
your OUT THE DOOR.!

Techs still have ALL of 6m & a narrow segment of 10m to hone their skills.

The problems I see, is LAX ENFORCEMENT caused by federal budget cuts at
regulatory agencies such as the FCC.

That's how CB got so bad, they dropped the licensing requirement,
stopped enforcement & net result, is you have CB'rs who don't know any
better.

Not that there are a fair share of Generals and EXTRA'S that run off at

Wow, you sound like the technicians are  invading "your" territory.
You also sound like you have a problem with those who got their start
in the CB bands over 30 years ago, like me. If the FCC makes this
change then those bands would no longer be just "general band"
anymore. I'm just a "TECHNICIAN" and have been for almost two years
and can say that the changes will not stop me from getting my general
but will get me experience in the bands before I leap off into the
fray. I don't think it will cause any more problems than all ready
exists.  Enforcement of current rules is what is needed, not holding
operators back because a few have no respect for the rules.. If you
want amateur radio to grow and not continue it's decline among younger
operators then more operators need to get with the program and welcome
changes that hopefully will do just that. It's not your bands, it's
our bands and I respectfully disagree  with your statement.

Re: [BVARC] Police/Fire call listening on UHF/VHF

2017-08-30 Thread D. Howard Bingham via BVARC
Looting was mentioned by Houston's Police Chief on KHOU Storm LIVE
STREAMING coverage last night, _*as REASON FOR creating a  10 p.m. to 5
a.m. curfew in Houston City Limits*_, citing looting in a number of
subdivisions and bedroom communities, even West University Place was
mentioned as where criminal activity was becoming a problem in areas
where people had evacuated due to the floods.

_*HPD is being supplemented by Texas National Guard in enforcement of
the curfew, stating the only exceptions would be to those assisting
rescues and volunteers at evacuation centers*_, then a reporter asked if
the NEWS MEDIA was included, to which Houston mayor turner replied, NO
WE NEED THE NEWS MEDIA to report what is going on & he mentioned that is
how HE (Mayor Turner) keeps informed.

So, be sure your family is HOME between the HOURS OF 10 P.M. and 5 A.M.
(Some other surrounding cities have slightly different curfew hours, so
listen to the MEDIA in your community.!

And aren't 911 calls sent to the closest jurisdiction to where the call
originates.?

And whether using a "Land Line" or "cell" number, ALWAYS tell the
operator where you are located, as to spite the GPS technology used by
cell phones, I've had EMS tell me that all they can do is zero in on a
50 ft. radius & in an apartment or condo, that could mean upward of 16
doors (OR MORE) they would have to knock on in a typical multi family
dwelling if the unit number was not mentioned...!

When I was still apartment living, I lost track of the number of times
the EMT's would knock on my door asking IF I HAD called for an
emergency.. Multi-story buildings compounds the issue.
