Re: [cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture egg(s)

2023-06-06 Thread Geo Kloppel
The nest site is not giving off any noticeable odor now. Hal Harrison wrote
that careful concealment of the nest from predators was imperative, because of
the strong odor that results from feeding carrion to the young. Perhaps
“careful concealment” includes eating and defecating off-site during the
incubation period to postpone detection as long as possible.

But is that the onset of the climate apocalypse that’s choking me this morning?
The boreal forest is burning, and my nostrils are full of the smoke. Imagine
the toll those fires are taking on nesting birds.

You have a lot of predators down there, Geo.
So they are a threat to baby TVs.
I did notice that there was very little odor in the boathouse while the birds
were there, even tho baby Hissy did poop inside.
Maybe lack of odor will help hide the chick(s) from predators.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture egg(s)

2023-06-06 Thread Donna Lee Scott
My experience with timing of Turkey vulture egg laid in my boathouse about May
11, 2022:

Egg probably hatched June 17, producing a white, downy chick with a black face
and beak.
The nestling (sitting on just beach gravel, so not much of a "nest").
Chick sat with its beak resting straight down on the gravel much of the time.
It hissed if I came near it, which I did not do very much.
Parent was with it some of the time, but parent out hunting a lot.

I looked up TVs in "Birds of the World" and it (and Robyn Bailey) said that TV
chicks are very slow to mature, taking 2-3 months to fledge.
Towards the end of August the chick was wandering around in the boathouse and
was by then mostly black feathered.
I have photos.

By third week of August I saw Hissy was gone from inside and not at the place
outside the boathouse where it usually went by then.
I saw Hissy fly on August 24, 2020. So a little over 2 months since it hatched.

Its face & beak by now was gray, as was its feet. Its feet may have been gray
from hatching, but not sure because I could not see them.

It hung around the area by itself for several days.
I saw it perched on the boathouse second story deck railing.
One time it perched over me in a big oak tree that overhung the RR track that
is in my former backyard.

By this time I had moved to Kendal and was not at 535 Lansing Station Rd very
much.
House sale closing early September and I was not there anymore.

Realtor joked: "Turkey Vulture conveys with house!"
Lawyer joked that this was the first time she had to consider a turkey vulture
during a house sale.

I have no contact with new owners, so do not know if the TV tried to nest there
again.

In late April I found a Turkey Vulture scraping around in the domestic debris

(nest building).

Over the next few weeks I observed several comings and goings that I
interpreted hopefully as shift-changes. She’s still in there today.

Sitting in a scrape in the trash for five weeks running seems so purposeful
that I feel pretty confident there must be an egg or two, soon to hatch…

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Turkey eggs question.

2019-07-10 Thread AB Clark
Depends on how old the embryos were when incubation was interrupted. Far
along, they are probably dead. Very early, there’s a chance, especially since
it is quite warm. Before the start of incubation, an excellent chance. Of
course, it also depends on how many hours ago the nest was hit.

Probably worth getting them immediately into turkey level warmth (101-103 F? I
would have to check) Then one could “candle” them in a day or so and see
whether there’s any movement in blood vessels, how old or developed they are,
etc.

When I drove into Auburn going to Wegmans this morning, there was a kettle of
25 or more TVs soaring . I’m three miles east of there and just had a group of
10 TVs go over. I’m used to seeing just a few at a time going over. What’s
with a huge group in the middle of the city. I bet there’s great thermals with

This afternoon at about 5pm I saw about 200 Turkey Vultures circling over the
vicinity of NYS-34/96, Decker Rd, and NYS-13 south of Ithaca near the Newfield
Town Line. Earlier in the day I had seen smaller numbers southbound along the
east edge of the Cayuga Lake Valley in Lansing. This afternoon about 3:40 I saw
some kettling, apparently also southbound over West Hill from Downtown Ithaca,
likely some of the same Judith reported.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture with white in wings

2016-12-13 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
While taking a walk at lunch through Sapsucker woods I saw a Turkey Vulture
circling over the pond. On close inspection, I saw it had big white patches in
the tips of the wings. I put photographs in my checklist at
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S33000639.

I haven't looked to compare it with photos of a similar bird we were seeing a
year of two ago, but it looked very similar.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey vultures: Union Springs

2016-04-10 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
At 9:30 this a.m at least 24 TVs were in the field between Spring St. &
Seminary St. with wings
outstretched, facing the sun. They stayed for nearly an hour with one at
a time eventually taking
off. I have seen them circling around the tall evergreens immediately
west of where they sat &
wondered if they might be roosting there instead of down in the swamp
behind the high school.

Factory St. pond has been hosting 3 to 5 prs. of wood ducks. Several
buffle heads continue on Mill.

I have birdhouse holes covered to keep out house sparrows until I see
bluebirds & tree swallows.

Daughter Becky, has been out checking osprey nests & finding a lot of
them occupied & several new
NYSEG installed risers on utility poles. During our warm spell early
last mo. a man on Kozy Kove Rd.
put up a very tall pole with nice "regulation size" platform with a
perch pole & "seeded" it with sticks.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures

2015-11-13 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,
Turkey vultures in this stiff west wind are enjoying themselves I think. They
are flying across the wind at 90 deg and falling a free fall and then arrest
themselves and again dribble down in the wind and back. So it is such fun to
watch their behavior over computer screen.

As for the serious discussion that is happening, I support Ken's email about
resolving the issues and I also appreciate what Dave did. I am for all things
alive!

Also this forum is to discuss about the live birds and anything that is related
to live birds in the Cayuga lake basin (with an occasional foray to outside
CLB), so if hunters on this list serve don't like the majority of this listerve
members' thoughts then perhaps they should consider joining the more
appropriate lists that covers their interest, so they don't have to read topics
they don't like or if they want to continue on the list then they should just
delete those emails.

Cheers

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures moving

2015-10-18 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
On my way back from Cortland this afternoon I drove Turkey Hill Rd. to the
house, on seeing a few TV's I pulled over to scan. I counted 141 in 25 minutes
along with 3 Red-tailed Hawks. All appeared to be south bound migrants catching
the tail end of clearing weather. This may bode well for sky watching tomorrow.

[cayugabirds-l] turkey vulture question

2015-07-23 Thread Claire Damaske
My neighbors (in Tyre) have a large, old barn which they do not use, but keep
in good repair. Tuesday, they were having a vent put in the round open window
on the south side. In the process they noticed a young vulture standing in the
corner shedding its downy feathers. When they told me, I went to investigate
and found 2 youngsters. Now... the neighbors have gone to England for a week.
The barn doors are closed (which they always have been). The south window is
vented... They report having seen a vulture enter there only once. There is
also a north round open window and a couple barn siding boards are missing, so
I am supposing that the parents can still get in. I've gone to check several
times and haven't seen any parents around. The neighbors have had quite a bit
of work done there recently and I'm just wondering and worrying that the
parents have been scared off. Any advice?

[cayugabirds-l] turkey vultures in Slaterville Springs

2015-03-22 Thread Melissa Groo
My favorite harbingers of spring, besides the robins and flocks of
red-winged blackbirds visiting my yard, are the pair of turkey vultures
that return to the lean-to along Route 79 in Slaterville Springs (just west
of Midline Rd). I saw them sitting on the listing shack this afternoon.

Does anyone know how many years they've taken up residence there?

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture

2015-02-25 Thread W. Larry Hymes
About 20 minutes ago I was very surprised to see a TURKEY VULTURE
soaring about near East Hill Plaza. Having heard no reports this
winter, I'm assuming this is an early migrant. I've often wondered why
this bird, and the red-wing blackbirds

Considering the severe weather and heavy snow cover in our area, why
would this bird, and the RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS that Dave Nutter saw on
the 22nd, not delay their northward migration until conditions improve
considerably? As they move north, aren't they taking into account the
conditions they are encountering and deciding whether to proceed or wait
it out? Any thoughts!?!?

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures here all winter

2015-02-25 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Reports came out of the woodwork about Turkey Vultures hanging around
our area all winter. This shows I don't get out and do much birding
during the winter months. It's far more comfortable looking out our
kitchen windows.

I still would like any thoughts you may have about true migrants like
Red-Wings showing up at this time, when the weather is very harsh and
the snow cover is very extensive. Do they not have a way to evaluate
conditions on their way north and decide to hold up awhile when
conditions are especially bad? Or is the timing of their northward
migration pretty much fixed --- for example, this is the time when
Red-Wings usually start to show up here. So when the winds are
favorable for migration, many of the birds take off and, flying at
night, don't know what to expect until they land the next morning. Then
they have to make due with whatever they happen to find. In this case,
I would think they would have a more difficult time finding adequate
food sources and good places to roost. On the bright side of things,
however, time is on their side --- the weather will continue to improve
as the season progresses (although more slowly some years than
others!!). All they have to do is hang in there!

2015-02-25 Thread Jody W Enck
Hi Larry,

Great report on another cold day.
I have seen Turkey Vultures (up to 15) almost every day this winter locally
around Ithaca. One recent day I was waiting for an early morning ride from
Varna to the Lab of O and watched more than a dozen in trees across the road
hanging out until some thermals started heating up (my supposition -- the
vultures did not share this info with me). As long as they have access to food
(e.g., compost piles, road kills, game farm critters, etc) they seem to be fine
with cold and snow.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture

2015-02-25 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Larry,
The simple answer is photoperiod. Red-winged BBs and others will migrate when
day
length reaches a certain threshold for the species. This instinctive response is
often coupled to their food requirements so insectivores will wait until the
days
get longer and most probably correspond to insect hatches enroute. Red-wings are
considered half-hearty but I wish them luck finding food other than at feeders
right
now. The average arrival date was a few days ago. Have seen several reports of
TVs
all winter long but none on their roost (NWS Fire Academy roof) in Montour
Falls.

Of course unless they sense a pressure gradient indicative of an impending
storm,
they come ahead on that increasing day length.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture

2015-02-25 Thread Anne Clark
To give a Wed 25th Feb update on Turkey Vulture whereabouts, about 15 were
either swirling around or sitting in the spruce trees behind the Varna
Community Center on 366 today at about 230. There may well have been more in
the spruces, hidden. They may be using these trees as a small local roost. At
least a couple more were out at the Stevenson Road Composting Facility/Game
Farm, a few minutes later.

The younger of the two Bald Eagles that Kevin described at the morning Compost
Piles was circling this area also, sailing between Fall Creek and the Compost
Piles. I saw it circle over Varna Auto Repair and then it was circling
through the Compost proper by the time I got there. (not hard, not far) Easily
recognizable as the same bird.

There were 7 fluffy-round Bluebirds on electric wires on Ed Hill Rd, Freeville,
just S of Hile School Road this afternoon at 4pm.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures

2014-10-13 Thread Dave Nutter
I agree Sunday was a good migration day for Turkey Vultures. At about 1pm I was
near the Lab entrance looking at the western skyline beyond the pond, and I
watched a near-continuous line of them flying south, about 60 all told. They
were gliding and gradually losing altitude, and when they got low enough to
almost be blocked by trees for me, one of them would find a thermal and start
circling up. Then all those behind it in line would veer into the thermal, and
suddenly there would be 20 birds kettling. But it seemed they would only circle
a few times (2 or 3? it was distracting, but I should have tried harder to
follow a single bird) before they would peel off the top and continue south. I
saw this a couple of times there, and then when I went to the Freese Road
Gardens I saw it again, once to the west and once almost overhead. I saw about
a hundred southbound Turkey Vultures altogether. There were also a few apparent
locals, by their behavior.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures

2014-10-12 Thread Carol Keeler
Yesterday as I worked in my yard I spotted a south bound TV. As I watched it
turned into a river of as many 30 TVs migrating past. I had guests who were
spellbound by all the birds. It's the first time I've spotted a large group
migrating through.

I had a very unusual new yard bird the other day. I looked out the kitchen
window and spotted a Great Blue Heron walking through the arbor. There's a
very shallow creek out back and perhaps it followed my paths down toward the
house. They do periodically fly over, but this was the first grounded one.

near the top of Bruce Hill Road in Danby and watch Turkey Buzzards soaring over

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey mom

2014-09-04 Thread Geo Kloppel
A Turkey has been hanging around our yard with just four poults. I've been
watching them since they were not much bigger than tennis balls. At first I
thought they were going to be easy prey for our brazen coyotes, who come quite
close even in daylight, or the foxes, who chase chickens and house cats, but
these birds learn to fly when they're still quite small.

Nevertheless, mom keeps them close. I can often tell where the little family is
from the soft call-and-response music they make as they forage together in the
deep undergrowth or out in the tall goldenrod.

I had the good fortune of seeing the biggest kettle of TVs ever (for me) as
they circled and swooped over the parking lot and the general vicinity of
Wegmans in Auburn, New York. I counted over 100 and approximated that possibly
125 were participating.
I looked for Black Vultures but did not see any. Many landed on a nearby cell

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures, dead tagged deer

2013-03-24 Thread Jesse Ross
The half dozen or so Turkey Vultures patiently adorning the trees in my
wooded backyard in Northeast Ithaca alerted me to a dead deer back there.
The neighborhood deer have been seeming desperately hungry lately - often
seen standing on tiptoes for a measly handful of hemlock needles,
shamelessly begging whenever they see me take out the compost, and
generally looking unhealthy and unsteady.

There are also some hair-stuffed tubular excreta of some kind in the
vicinity. They don't quite look like coyote scat to me, so my next guess is
pellets from the vultures?

Given the topic of this mailing list, I'll also say that I got fantastic
views of these grim and gruesome, but interesting and ecologically
valuable, birds.

Anyways, the unlucky deer has numbered white ear tags, so I guess somebody
went to the trouble of sterilizing it. I'm wondering if anybody is
collecting information about these tagged animals. If anybody has any
contact info I'd appreciate it!

Thanks,
Jesse Ross

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture roost possibilities

2012-12-31 Thread nutter.dave
I don't know for certain where the Turkey Vultures are roosting, but I suspect the evergreens west of Community Corners from Spruce Lane south. Another place I've seen them gathering near dusk is along NYS-366 just east of the Cornell fleet garage in evergreens on the slope down to Varna. I've also seen gatherings of Turkey Vultures south of Burdick Hill Road toward the west part of the field during the day, and west of Ithaca Cardiology (2432 North Triphammer Road) probably checking out a feeding site. I have only seen individuals, not groups, over the past few days.--Dave Nutter

This site has the results of the 2011 winter survey for Wild Turkey flocks.

Gives data on the August summer surveys of hens and poults.

This website is easy to navigate.

Last week I counted 31 wild turkeys in one of our Lansing Station Rd. flocks in
NW Lansing. It seemed to be a flock with growing poults, females and a few
males, but was quite far away, so I could not tell for sure.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Turkey survey

2012-10-04 Thread Candace Cornell
The reported numbers look very low for the last three years in areas in
NYS. For example, in the last three summer in the Adirondack's (ADK), there's
been a turkey population explosion, where they are now as common as deer
are in the Cayuga Basin. I saw flocks of up to 39 per sighting, daily if
not near-hourly, during the summer-fall in the High Peaks. I wish I had
known about the survey. Thanks.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey in Mundy Wildflower Garden!!!

2012-04-21 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Had some interesting sightings yesterday on my walk around Beebe Lake
and Mundy. As I was walking up the south hill of Mundy, I was extremely
surprised to see a WILD TURKEY walking up the hillside. The bird was
equally surprised by my presence and kept scurrying away as I continued
up the hill. I eventually lost sight of it.

Another fun sighting was a BELTED KINGFISHER flying about the SW portion
of the garden area loudly proclaiming, This is my territory. Stay
out! Unless, of course, you happen to be a female!

Just off the southern portion of the trial around Beebe, I heard the
incessant buzzing of a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER. I eventually found it
flitting about. FOY for me.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture roost threat

2012-04-14 Thread Kathy Strickland

Many of the Turkey Vultures here in the northern part of the Basin actually
roost in Auburn, in and near Fort Hill Cemetery. Last week when I arrived at
the parking lot of Auburn United Methodist Church on Fitch, I stood to watch
the birds circling in and landing in the Norway Spruces that line the western
edge of the lot. Suddenly a shot rang out and about 50 vultures were startled
out of the trees. While I doubt they were in physical danger, evidently someone
in the neighborhood is either thinking the birds pose a problem in the area, or
is just thinking it's fun to harass them. Either way, it's wrong. I had to get
inside for choir rehearsal or I would have at least walked down the street a
ways to see if I could locate the source of the shot. Any ideas on how to deal
with this? Kathy Strickland, Union Springs

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures

2012-03-19 Thread Meena Haribal
Hey Brad and all,

I did the same too. I scanned the flock three times for Black Vulture, but my
flock was smaller than yours and had only 22 birds. I just got back from
watching them. they seemed so care less (as opposed to careless) and
effortlessly circled around and finally headed up Six Miles Creek, probably
hoping to roost somewhere. Yesterday afternoon, while I was hanging out laundry
in my yard, a Bald Eagle circled over my head fairly close, I was thinking of
heading inside to my camera, it floated south. But soon returned, but was
little higher than previous time and circled and floated away to west.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Hill Northern Shrike

2011-12-31 Thread Marie P Read
Hi all,

The Northern Shrike was making the rounds of the field north of the large barn
on Turkey Hill Road, 10:00 am Saturday, then again at 11:00 am when I returned
to photograph it. When I left at 1:45 it was still in the field, foraging
frequently but with far less success than on the balmy day Jeff Gerbracht saw
it a couple weeks ago.

Photos to come.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture List

2011-05-25 Thread Sandy Podulka

Hi Folks,
A friend of mine not on this list asked me to report that he is
monitoring an active Turkey Vulture nest with two eggs. It is in a
medium-sized gorge on the west side of Cayuga Lake, and the eggs are
basically laid right on the ground, maybe with a few extra dried
leaves under them.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture's breakfast

2011-03-20 Thread Watt W. Webb
Saturday a.m.surprise: a flight of about 6 to 8 Vultures, mostly
Turkey circled our hilly areaway above east side of Cayuga Lake for
about an hour. Then I discovered 6 of them in our garden bushes and
and trees consuming remains of several small 4 legged bodies out on
theatgrass near the trees for an hour or 2. Later in the day and
still today I noticed several Vultures continuing to scope the whole
hillside from lake shore to hill tops.

On a new note our first Robins have arrived yesterday evening and
the Goldfinch crowd has began to show bright gold colors.

The usual spring flow of Northern Mockingbirds with their
distinctive, repetitive songs have not caught my attention yet, tho'
the weather seems right. I will have to listen on the hills to watch
their usual up-hill spring drift and expression of mating calls.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures over Ithaca

2010-10-22 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
As we were heading North on Meadow St. just after 6 p.m. tonight we saw a flock
of 14 turkey vultures flying ... (not soaring) out towards Wal-mart area ...
what's that ... SW??? Never have seen them just flapping all together like a
flock of crows or geese as they were tonight. Good thing I had my binox on the
dash was waiting for the light to turn green so I had a positive ID.

Trip to Ithaca from Union Springs early afternoon was extremely windy. Futile
to find anything on the lake. I'm surprised Steve Susie even found the Be
Happy Cafe!
And Mark congrats on having a screechie again. I'd jump up down in
exuberance, too!

CO son-in-law stood in awe tonight when he came home from work, watching
listening to the flights of geese admiring the fantastic sunset, one of the
prettiest we've had in a couple wks.. So glad Steve Susie got to see it.

[cayugabirds-l] turkey vulture Q

2010-02-20 Thread Susan Fast
There was a recent question about a turkey vulture being early in Vestal. I
haven't seen it answered on the general list, so will try to do so. No, not
early.

A good reference for questions like this at this time of year (or any time)
is www.birdcount.org http://www.birdcount.org/ . This gets you to the
GBBC site; then hit the Exploring Results box. This gives you 4 choices-go
to Map Room (upper left-hand corner). You are then asked what species you
want and will have to scroll down a list to turkey vulture. Hit Year
2010, then North America. Once you get that map, you can pick
Allegheny from the Region list on the left-hand side to see the
distribution of TVs in NY and PA as of mostly last weekend. Some half-hardy
species have started moving north, and I suspect that's what was seen.

This site is great fun in addition to having a lot of information. I spend
a lot of time wandering around in it.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey

2010-02-05 Thread Sara Jane Hymes
I just returned from a walk up Eastern Heights Rec. Way and as I was
coming down the hill a large Tom Turkey flew across the walk way; landed
in the woods and rapidly 'jogged' through the woods away from the
walkway. This was the first time I've seen a turkey in this area--aside
from the domestic turkeys which are fenced in. Perhaps they've been
calling to him?

Further along, on the East Ithaca Rec Way, half way between Honness Lane
and Mitchell St there were 20 Blue Jays just apparently 'hanging out'
together in a tree! Neat.
