Of course. We realize that.

These are on demand processes. We continuously monitor, tweak, and tune
database performance. We're looking for additional improvement elsewhere as
well.

Thanks Dave and Alan for your input!

Thanks Russ and Dave. I suspected it was as both of you have said. Just wanted

CF sandbox security

2013-04-02 Thread Earl, George

Is CF sandbox security intended to secure the application runtime environment
or is it intended to secure directory and folder access during development when
developers upload and access files? Or is it intended for both?

For example, are sandboxes the way to go if we want to restrict a developer's
access to certain directories during development so he cannot damage files in
other folks' directories?

I ask because we are weighing FTP vs RDS for uploading files to our servers.

Thanks!

CF10 - editing jvm.config

2013-03-21 Thread Earl, George

Is it ok to manually edit the jvm.config file in CF10? (after backing it up, of
course)

We would like to change the Java File Encoding setting.

I ask because of the Note at the end of this section of the 'Getting Started
with Tomcat in ColdFusion 10' on the Adobe ColdFusion Blog
(http://blogs.coldfusion.com/post.cfm/getting-started-with-tomcat-in-coldfusion-10
 ):

Basic Directory structure Changes - the comparison between ColdFusion 9 and
ColdFusion 10
1.

All the folders under ColdFusion9 -- > ColdFusion10\cfusion
2. ColdFusion9\runtime\jre -- > ColdFusion10\jre
3. ColdFusion9\runtime\bin\jvm.config -- >
ColdFusion10\cfusion\bin\jvm.config
4. ColdFusion9\runtime\lib\wsconfig (for connector configuration ) -- >
ColdFusion10\config\wsconfig
5.  ColdFusion9\uninstall --> ColdFusion10\uninstall

ColdFusion10\config folder is created only in ColdFusion 10. So, what does it
contain?
1.

Connector configuration files -- > ColdFusion10\config\wsconfig
2. Instances configured -- > ColdFusion10\config\instances.xml
3. Clusters configured -- > ColdFusion10\config\cluster.xml

Note :Dont manually change these above mentioned files.
I assume this Note applies to just the second set of files and not ALL of 'the
above mentioned files' but I'd like to be sure before we proceed.

Thanks!

George

Charts expiring and dropping from cache

2012-01-12 Thread Earl, George

We're running CF Enterprise 9.0.1.

We are having a problem with (cf)charts expiring and dropping from the cache
before users have a chance to print them. This article from 2005 describes a
fix to manually alter minTimeout\maxTimeout values in \lib\webcharts3d.xml to adjust the retention time in cache
(http://cfchart.blogspot.com/2005/06/image-expired-trouble.html). That was for
CF7.

Has anyone run across an updated fix or a better process that doesn't involve
manually altering a file to fix this issue? I have searched but I cannot find
anything.

Thanks!

Data source continues working after user id revoked

2011-02-14 Thread Earl, George

We had something weird happen. We're running CF 9.0.1 in a load balanced
setting with two servers.

The password for one of our data sources was changed so that the passwords in
the data sources on the two servers no longer were valid.

The data source on one server promptly stopped working with a user id revoked
error because of the 'bad' password. But the data source on the other server
kept working for several hours until sometime after close of business for that
day. In the morning the data source was broken on both servers with the user id
revoked error.

Does it sound reasonable that the server that continued to be able to use the
data source after the user id had been revoked was able to do so because it was
kept open in the cache as long as someone was using it within the maintain
connections timeout window? And that it was able to do so until the timeout
window expired at some point with no further requests for the data source?

Thanks!

George

Scheduling lots of ColdFusion tasks in a limited window

2010-11-02 Thread Earl, George

We're running CF9 Enterprise in a pretty robust intranet environment - multiple
CPUs, lots of RAM, our own instance, load balanced across two servers.

We have about 60 scheduled tasks that need to run in a two hour period each
morning. Each task hits either a mainframe database or a data warehouse
database. Most tasks complete in a few seconds to a minute (lots of data), some
take a couple of minutes or longer.

We are adding new tasks at a steady rate and the two hour window is getting
pretty crowded.

How concerned would you be about starting more than one task at the same time
on the same server?

What would guide you in determining a limit on how many tasks you would start
at the same time on the same server?

How concerned would you be about starting the same task(s) at the same time on
each of the two load balanced servers?

Thanks!

That would help to explain why it's not working.

Yes, we'll play with this, although we would use this to supplement the
time out for the scheduled task when it runs through the scheduler.

This exercise is kind of frustrating. Currently the scheduled task in
question takes approximately 780(!) seconds to complete and it's
growing. That's another story I won't go into here.

For obvious reasons we don't want the server time out setting set to a
number high enough to accommodate this scheduled task.

All we are trying to do is to have a time out setting for this
particular scheduled task that will override a more reasonable server
time out setting.

As Dave pointed out, appending the requestTimeout parameter to the end
of the URL did not work (at least not without adding the appropriate
cfsetting tag into the code, as Cameron pointed out).

We put a timeout value into the configuration screen for this scheduled
task but that appears not to have worked either. Maybe that is because
we need to stop and restart the CF instance for the change to take
effect. It doesn't say that in the Help docs and we can't just try it
now because it's on a production server . . .

Thanks Dave and Cameron for your input.

Thanks, everyone.

We'll use ?requestTimeout=[seconds] appended to the URL for the
scheduled task until we can get the cfsetting tag inserted into the
appropriate places.

Rick asked:

> Question: do the tasks have to be triggered manually from

Actually running them sequentially has nothing to do with it. We run the
tasks manually when testing\debugging and when a production dependency
comes in late, after the scheduled task already has run. Thanks for your
suggestions.

Scheduled tasks timeout vs. server timeout

2009-10-28 Thread Earl, George

We need to be able to manually run scheduled tasks that take longer to
complete than our server timeout setting.

By 'manually run' I mean by entering the URL for a scheduled task into
the address bar of our browser or by clicking on links to a scheduled
task (because we have limited access to CF Administrator).

I understand that the timeout setting for scheduled tasks overrides the
server timeout setting but I assume that works only when the task is run
by the CF scheduler or by running it manually from within the CF
Administrator, is this correct?

If we run a scheduled task manually as described above is
cfsetting\requestTimeout in the code our only recourse for overriding
the server timeout setting?

Thanks!

Oracle 11G CLOBs\BLOBs yielding non-standard characters with CF7

2009-03-04 Thread Earl, George

Our development environment was just upgraded from Oracle 10G to Oracle
11G (which is not officially supported by ColdFusion, but it's not our
decision). We're on ColdFusion 7 Enterprise and we're using the supplied
Data Direct drivers. We are getting some unexpected non-standard special
characters spread through our output that is pulled from Oracle 11G
CLOBs\BLOBs that we were not getting with Oracle 10G.

If we run this query:

Select value from SYS.NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS where PARAMETER =
'NLS_CHARACTERSET'

to determine the character sets that are being used by Oracle we find:

Oracle 10G - US7ASCII

Oracle 11G - UTF8

We are accepting the ColdFusion 7 default use of UTF-8 in our
application and we do not override it anywhere in our application.

Any ideas why we wouldn't get non-standard characters in our output with
Oracle 10G set up to use US7ASCII but we DO get these non-standard
characters with Oracle 11G set up to use UTF-8?

Thanks!

Thanks, Dave.

Unfortunately I don't have details about the strange behavior other than
applications 'stopped working' and 'they started working again after we
reran all the scheduled tasks'. Turns out we have several groups of 2 -
4 scheduled tasks where all tasks in a group start at the same time, and
on top of that we're load balanced across two servers. I suspect you are
right about shared data if it turns out that the scheduled tasks really
are the source of the problem.

Thanks, Ian.

This is second on my to do list after we see what happens with the next
cycle of these scheduled tasks (first on my list is below).

Right, I try for 5 min apart but settle for 1 min if I have to. I don't
know how we ended up with all these concurrent start times but it's at
the top of my list to break them out into individual start times.

CF-Scheduler - multiple tasks starting at the same time

2008-12-10 Thread Earl, George
Is there a fundamental problem with having two or more scheduled tasks
start at the same time? Does this confuse CF?

We have started to experience some strange behavior with CF scheduled
tasks that run quick queries against Oracle and DB2 and write the
returned answer sets into .js files. We have lots of these scheduled
tasks, sometimes with up to four of them having the same start time.

We're running CF7 on Unix.

Thanks!

CF7 - Questions about using .car file

2007-12-04 Thread Earl, George
Sorry for the cross-post, I haven't received a response over at
cf-server . . .

I am about to use a CF .car file for the first time. I need to copy data
sources and scheduled tasks from CF7 on a Solaris 10 box to CF7 on a
Windows 2003 box. The Solaris box uses the multi-server installation. I
will be grabbing the data sources and scheduled tasks from one instance
on this Solaris server. The Windows box does not use the multi-server
installation. I will be dropping the new data sources and scheduled
tasks in with the existing ones on the Windows server.

I have already created the .car file on the Solaris box. Now I need to
deploy this .car file on the Windows box.

My questions:

After I copy the .car file to a folder on the Windows box and then point
the unarchive process to this file is CF smart enough to drop the new
data sources and scheduled tasks in the appropriate place on the Windows
box?

Will CF do this WITHOUT wiping out any data sources and scheduled tasks
that already are there?

Thanks!

George

Nope, no third party user authentication.

Right. We looked at this and on the surface everything appears to be in
order. CF is running under localSystem and doesn't have any problem
successfully running scheduled tasks from other folders that have the
same permissions as the folder that is giving us trouble.

Thanks, all, for your responses. We will continue to investigate.

CF7 and tasks won't run through scheduler

2007-01-11 Thread Earl, George
We're running CF Enterprise 7.0.2 on Win2k.

A couple of days ago I created a whole bunch of scheduled tasks. None of
these tasks work through the scheduler itself nor through clicking on
the 'Run Scheduled Task' icon on the scheduled tasks page in CFAdmin.

If I do the latter I get a message at the top of the scheduled task page
that says the task was run successfully and I get a corresponding entry
in the scheduler.log file. However the task doesn't do what it is
supposed to do - it's like it didn't really run.

If I let the scheduler run the tasks as scheduled I get the same
messages in scheduler.log that say the tasks ran successfully but they
really haven't.

If I copy the URLs in the scheduled task setup page and drop them into a
browser and run them they work fine.

We restarted the CF Application service and tried again but that didn't
fix the problem.

I deleted and recreated a task but that didn't fix it.

Other tasks that I had created in the past work just fine.

Any ideas what might be causing this problem?

Thanks!

CF7 on Solaris - using MS Excel as a data source

2006-12-05 Thread Earl, George
We are migrating to CF7 on Solaris 10. In our Windows environment we
have a number of applications that use MS Excel as data sources for read
only. We access these using ODBC socket after the server admin creates
system ODBC data sources to each of the excel files on the server.

How is this handled on Solaris? How do we set up a data source to an
Excel file?

Thanks!

Right. I work at a federal gov't agency and we don't get money for
training and conferences until Congress passes the budget for the
current fiscal year. Recently that hasn't been until well into the new
calendar year so we probably won't even have a shot at the early bird
rate. Last year I was able to attend for free on the buy three get one

Does anyone know what the going rate is for a conference similar to
CF-United?

Timeout requests after XX seconds . . .

2006-09-19 Thread Earl, George
I'm confused.

If the 'Timeout requests after XX seconds' setting in CFAdmin is set to
60 seconds and a request (for us almost always a database request) takes
longer than 60 seconds I get a message in the CF logs that 'The
unresponsive thread count is up to X.' When the request completes I get
a message that 'The unresponsive thread count is down to X.' and another
message that the offending template ran x seconds.

I thought the purpose of the time out setting in CFAdmin was to free up
the offending thread once the time out limit had been reached. But the
log file message implies that the thread is kept open until the request
returns from the database at which time it is then terminated and freed
up.

Is this maybe two types of time outs - CF processing time outs vs.
database request time outs? And what I describe above is CF practicing
good database request housekeeping?

Does it make sense that 1) if a thread is kept open until the request
returns from the database, even if that request goes beyond the time out
setting in CFAdmin, and 2) if the CF processing on the returned answer
set is at most a couple of seconds, it would make sense to not time out
these database requests?

Running CF5 . . . :(

Thanks!

Active Directory breaks CF code?

2006-08-31 Thread Earl, George
Is there any reason why moving a Windows 2000 Advanced Server into
Active Directory would break CF code that checks for a cookie in MSIE 6
and then proceeds based on whether or not it finds that cookie?

We have a production intranet app where this code has been running fine
for about three years. When we moved the server into Active Directory it
broke. When we moved it back out of Active Directory it works again.
Same thing happens if we move our development server in and out of
Active Directory.

Funny thing is, the problem affects only some people. Two people at the
same location sitting side by side - one breaks, one doesn't. (By
"breaks" I mean when they click on a link some people get a 404 error
and some people get in a loop where they return to the same page over
and over.)

Any ideas what might be causing this?

We're running CF5 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

Thanks!

We have a test Windows server set up with CF6.1 (soon to be upgraded to
CF7) that accesses DB2 on z/OS. Our DBAs made us use the IBM DB2 Type 2
JDBC drivers specifically because it would allow them to take 'full
advantage of DB2's capabilities' - whatever that means. We run
successfully against DB2 using both stored procedures and pass through
SQL.

I don't know about user management through JDBC and I cannot answer your
performance gains question because we are still deep into the CF5 to CF7
migration project that won't end, but we ran some pretty heavy load
testing (for our environment) and we didn't run into any issues. I
should say that we do only reads, no creates, updates, deletes.

More 'which framework should I use' - try podcasts

2006-07-05 Thread Earl, George
With all the current discussion on frameworks and which one to use,
etc., I thought I'd throw this in . . .

At least two of the ColdFusion podcasts have had some excellent shows
(versions?) about frameworks recently.

'The ColdFusion Podcast' with Bryan Kaiser and Michael Haynie has had an
ongoing series that so far has covered Spry, Reactor, Fusebox 4, and
Model-Glue in pretty good detail and has touched on the other more
notable ones as well. (http://www.coldfusionpodcast.com/)

'The ColdFusion Weekly' with Matt Woodward and Peter J. Farrell
discusses frameworks and related topics all the time and they also touch
on all the more notable ones.

I haven't yet listened to "Helms and Peters Out Loud' by Hal Helms and
Jeff Peters, but I'd bet pretty big money that they are all over
frameworks. :) (http://www.helmsandpeters.com/)

What's great about these podcasts is you can download them to your mp3
player and take them with you to the gym or while you are out jogging,
biking, commuting, etc., and you can get a reasonably quick but
meaningful primer on the topic of the day (which often is about
frameworks). Highly recommended . . .

I have been watching the explosion in numbers of frameworks for CF with
great interest.

The second comment above about using the 'latest FB4.1 or 5' is one that
concerns me. As someone who participates in building large enterprise
web applications, I'd love to adopt a framework and get all of the
resulting benefits that have been discussed here. But we have a hard
enough time with the logistics of just upgrading versions of CF (we
still haven't made the jump from CF5 to CF6\7 in my area, primarily
because of an extremely aggressive application release schedule). I
don't know enough about frameworks to know the answer to this question,
but unless the process of modifying an enterprise application to
accommodate upgrades\updates to the framework that has been used is
relatively easy I don't see how we could keep up with the framework. Or
am I overestimating the complexity of what is involved in upgrading to a
new version of a framework?

Scheduled tasks

2006-05-08 Thread Earl, George
3rd post, new subject line, haven't seen the first two come through . .
..

We have a request from someone who shares our server to create _80_
scheduled tasks for a reporting application. Each scheduled task would
create a single report and save it as an htm file so it doesn't have to
be created on the fly each time someone requests it. About 30 of these
tasks would be daily, another 30 would be weekly (all on the same day),
and the remaining 20 would be quarterly and yearly.

Adding this many scheduled tasks is out of my comfort zone.

What do you think?

I've suggested that they combine the dailies, weeklies, monthlies and
yearlies into four separate scheduled tasks. They don't like that idea.

Also, are there best practices for scheduling tasks through CF
Scheduler?

Can you schedule multiple tasks to start at the same time and have them
fire and execute reliably?

Is the number of tasks that can be scheduled to start simultaneously
limited only by the 'Limit simultaneous requests setting' in CF
Administrator?

We're still on CF5 on Win2K, migrating painfully slowly to CF7 on
Solaris . . .

Thanks!

Yep, we use this one. Does it give a true representation of 800 x 600?
Stupid question: if I'm at 1280 x 1024 and I set the DW design view to
800 x 600 it still uses the fonts, etc., from 1280 x 1024. If I change
monitor resolution to 800 x 600 will the fonts and everything else
'upsize' as shown in the DW 800 x 600 window in 1280 x 1024 (whew)?

SOT: Developing for 800 x 600 on monitor at higher resolution

We just got new LCD monitors that have a native resolution of 1280 x
1024 but we develop for 800 x 600 (inTRAnet standard). Like lots of
LCDs, these look like crap at anything other than their native
resolution. If you are in the same boat, how do you develop for a
non-native resolution like 800 x 600 and make sure that everything fits
and looks right? Do you pop up an 800 x 600 browser window to view the
pages? Use a second monitor set to 800 x 600? Use a utility? Thanks!

ColdFusion and IPv6

2006-01-11 Thread Earl, George
In case any of you need to know this information (especially those of you in
the federal government who need to comply with IPv6), I got the following
almost directly from the ColdFusion development team:

Does ColdFusion comply with IPv6?

***

Support for IPv6 was added to ColdFusion MX 7.01. As of that version,
ColdFusion will run with application servers, web server, operating systems,
and database drivers that support IPv6. The data you requested is listed
below:

CFMX: no IPv6
CFMX6.1: no IPv6
CFMX7:no IPv6
CFMX7.01: yes IPv6, and yes dual

***

My understanding of dual stack is that it means a software package supports
both IPv4 and IPv6 (IPv6 is not backward compatible).

CFIDE directory in CFMX 7.0.1 on Solaris with multi-server instal l

2005-11-30 Thread Earl, George
We are finally entering the world of CFMX, jumping right from CF5 on Win2k
to CFMX 7.0.1 on Solaris (Enterprise, multi-server install). We have lots to
learn.

I have been given the following path on the Solaris server in which to
install my web application:

server_address/data/cf7data/apps/application_name

I noticed that the CFIDE directory/folder is inside the application_name
directory/folder where my application folders and files will reside.

Is this standard practice? If not what is the best practice for placing or
installing the CFIDE folder so that it is protected from users?

Thanks!

Font in list boxes, text boxes and buttons behaves differently in .cfm between CF5 and CFMX . . .

2005-07-23 Thread Earl, George
Ok, this is weird.

We're migrating our site from CF5 on Windows 2000 to CFMX 6.1 on Windows
2000. Our standard browser is MSIE 6.0. The two servers are
hardware/software clones of each other except for CF5 vs CFMX.

When I toggle back and forth between the same .cfm page(s) in the two
different environments everything looks identical except that the font-face
and font-size in all dropdown list boxes and text boxes and on all buttons
is different between CF5 and CFMX. This makes the list boxes, text boxes and
buttons grow and shrink as I toggle back and forth between the two
environments, even when there is no text in the list boxes and text boxes.
This behavior is uniform throughout the site when I compare pages between
the two environments - it affects all list boxes, text boxes and buttons.

Also, when I try to change the font for the list boxes, text boxes and
buttons in the various stylesheets on the CFMX server it appears to have no
affect.

I created a simple html page with three sets of dropdown list box and button
pairs and uploaded a copy to the CF5 and the CFMX servers. On the CF5 server
the font stays the same whether the file is .htm or .cfm. On the CFMX server
the font is the same as on the CF5 server when it's a .htm file but the font
changes when the file is a .cfm file. So the font stays the same on CF5 as
..htm/.cfm and on CFMX as .htm but the font changes on CFMX when it's in a

CF5 - error when trying to create data source

2005-05-13 Thread Earl, George
Any ideas what could be causing our staging server to frequently give us
this error message when we try to create a data source?

**
Error Diagnostic Information
Request canceled or ignored by server Server busy or unable to fulfill
request. The server is unable to fulfill your request due to extremely high
traffic or an unexpected internal error. Please attempt your request again
(if you are repeatedly unsuccessful you should notify the site
administrator). (Location Code: 26)
**

This happens when trying to create both Oracle and DB2 data sources.

To clear it and be able to create a data source we have to stop and restart
the CF Application Server service or sometimes we have to reboot the server.

This server gets very little traffic since we use it only for integration
testing. Our production server, which is basically a clone of the staging
server, gives the same error but only once in a blue moon.

We're running CF 5 Enterprise for Windows on Win2K Advanced Server.

Thanks!

So what would you use if you were heading toward CFMX 6.1 on two clustered

Yes, but was the CFUSION_DISABLE_DBCONNECTIONS function removed because JDBC
does not support that kind of function or was there some other reason the
function was removed? Inquiring minds want to know! (The inquiring minds

CF5 to CFMX - CFUSION_DISABLE_DBCONNECTIONS and MS Excel data sou rces

2005-02-03 Thread Earl, George
Has anyone else figured out how to get from CFMX the same functionality with
MS Excel that CFUSION_DISABLE_DBCONNECTIONS provides in CF5?

We are migrating from CF5 Enterprise on Windows to CFMX 6.1 Enterprise with
updater on Windows.

We have a CF5 application that queries IBM DB2 and builds MS Excel files
into which it dumps the answer sets. In CF5, to get around multiple
'Operation must use an updateable query.' ODBC error messages every time we
try to update an Excel file we use the CFUSION_DISABLE_DBCONNECTIONS
function to enable/disable the Excel data source. Works fine. Of course, the
CFUSION_DISABLE_DBCONNECTIONS function is no longer available in CFMX so now
the process is broken.

My searching of cf-talk archives, mm forums, googling, etc., for a solution
has yielded only others asking for the same help, no solutions . . .

Has anyone here figured out how to replicate CF5's
CFUSION_DISABLE_DBCONNECTIONS functionality in CFMX?

Thanks!

The intended logic is

 if (a and b and c and d) or e

and we are looking to see if the Right() substring is "0" . . .

We have played with parens and it made no difference. However, as Rebecca
suggested, we have discovered that in our situation where this problem
surfaces, on CFMX RS1 IS NOT defined and on CF5 RS1 IS defined.

RS1 is a one line result set returned by the stored procedure that most of
the time contains a date and some other data that we do not use or on
occasions like our problem situation it is 'empty' (nulls?).

In any case, after a hard look at the code we don't see any reason for the
'or not isDefined("RS1")' to be in the cfif statement so we have removed it
and everything appears to be working fine now . . .

Thanks, all, for your responses . . .

CF5 to CFMX - cfif breaks

2005-02-01 Thread Earl, George
I figure this is an ODBC vs. JDBC issue . . .

The following cfif has been working fine in CF5 for 3 years but it breaks in
MX 6.1 with updater (we are just now migrating CF5 to MX, so I don't know if
it would have worked in MX or MX 6.1 pre updater . . .):

closeTransferWindow();
alert("An error has occured within this application,
please try again later.
#code#-#message#");

code is the return code and message is the message sent back by a DB2
mainframe stored procedure:

What's happening is that if trim(code) is "W8" or "W12" MX executes the cfif
above instead of falling through.

I have checked, and trim(code) does convert correctly to "W8" or "W12".
Without trimming it is "W8 " and "W12 ". I have also tried CF_SQL_CHAR (and
a number of others in desperation!) instead of CF_SQL_VARCHAR, but that made
no difference.

Any ideas why the cfif isn't working on MX?

We are using IBM JDBC Type 2 drivers to access DB2 on z/OS (mandated by our
DB2 folks) but behavior is the same with the DataDirect DB2 JDBC Type 4
drivers supplied with the updater. We are running CFMX Enterprise 6.1 with
updater on Windows 2000 . . .

Thanks!

Oracle native drivers stop verifying (CF5)

2004-11-09 Thread Earl, George
For some functions we use the native Oracle 8.0 drivers supplied with CF 5.0
Enterprise to access Oracle 8i. They worked fine till Monday, now none of
them work and they will not verify. If we submit a query using one of the
native data sources it just never comes back - we do not get an error
message. Recreating the native data sources does not fix the problem.

Our Oracle people insist no changes were made in their area. Our server guy
says the same. Yet some of these data sources worked fine on Friday and none
worked on Monday . . .

Any ideas what might be going on?

We're running CF 5.0 Enterprise on Windows 2000 Adv Server . . .

SOT: Functional roles on web application team

2004-10-15 Thread Earl, George
I have lost my bookmark to a page on MM's site that described the different
functional roles needed on a team that develops web applications. If I
remember correctly they defined about 13 distinct roles and what their
responsibilities are. This was in the context of an article on overall web
application development. I have spent a couple of hours searching and
browsing MM's site but I cannot find it. I did find
http://www.macromedia.com/v1/Handlers/index.cfm?ID=17578&Method=Full that
has similar information but it's not the one I am looking for.

Does anyone recognize the article I described and maybe have the URL? Or
maybe have another reference that contains similar information?  :-)

Not one mention of CF anywhere in this article. Maybe they lumped it under
'Other interpreted languages'. Kind of disappointing . . .

I should have mentioned that we are dealing with an intranet that has 1500
offices spread across the country . . . and we are standardized on MSIE for
our browser . . . the print output would need to be directed to the printer
that is associated with a user, regardless of where their office is . . .

Bryan also said:

Yes, we are considering this, but this raises a number of security issues as
there will be sensitive data in the output files. And as you mentioned, it's
not 'direct to printer'. We are quite curious to see if Blackstone's PDF
functionality would help us with this approach.

Bryan also said:

We are already using this to allow users to print what they have displaying
in their browser.

Yep, right with you on that one. Unfortunately our users are persistent in
requesting this functionality. So I revisit this issue about once a year and
re-post it to the list hoping that someone may be aware of advances in
technology that may have yielded a reasonable solution or work-around . . .

Sending (formatted) output directly to a printer

2004-09-29 Thread Earl, George
Is there a way to format an answer set from a CF request to a database into
a report and then send it directly to a user's printer while bypassing their
browser?

We are migrating a mainframe CICS application to a web application using CF
and Oracle.

When a user requests a listing/report, the mainframe application will return
up to 300 rows to the screen, will divert between 301 to 3000 rows to the
user's mainframe associated printer, and will ask the user to refine their
search if the answer set reaches 3001 rows.

The users want us to duplicate this 300/3000 row functionality in the web
app version and they also want the capability of sending output directly to
a printer regardless of how many rows are in the answer set (at times this
could be as many as 5000 rows!). The output that gets directed to a printer
must be formatted into a listing/report just like the output that gets
displayed in the browser. I.e., the print output must have report headers,
column headers, counts and totals, etc., not just be a dump of the answer
set.

Our dilemma is how do we format the output into a listing/report and send it
directly to the user's printer while bypassing the browser?

How would you do this?

If this is not possible, what other alternative(s) would you consider to
satisfy this requirement?

We are still on CF 5 on Win2k, moving to CFMX 6.1 on Win2003, then to CFMX
6.1/Blackstone on Solaris . . .

Thanks!

What if you are building a new server (migrating from CF 5) - do you install
CFMX 6.1 and stop there, or do you also install the recently released
updater, or do you install individual hot fixes based on your knowledge and
what you feel is appropriate?

CFMX 6.1, Windows 2003 Advanced Server and IIS 6

2004-07-27 Thread Earl, George
We have a web server running Windows 2000 Advanced Server and CFMX 6.1
standalone install. We are about to upgrade this server to Windows 2003
Advanced Server and IIS 6.

Can we do this upgrade while leaving CFMX in place? If not, how should we
proceed?

Any tips on the upgrade process?

Any comments, positive or negative, about CFMX and IIS 6?

DWMX - resolving cfincludes into calling template

2004-07-07 Thread Earl, George
Maybe it's my imagination, but I seem to remember that when DWMX first came
out I saw someone demo that there was a way it could resolve cfincludes
source code into a calling template so that, for example, if a calling
template called six cfincludes the source code inside those cfincludes would
be included at the appropriate spots in the calling template, thus producing
one long merged display of source code.

Am I imagining this or can Dreamweaver really do this?

Unresponsive requests - very strange

2004-06-21 Thread Earl, George
I have a very strange and frustrating problem -

We are running CF 5.0 on Windows 2000, Oracle 8i, and the Merant ODBC
drivers that ship with CF (we have had problems with the Oracle native
drivers).

We have a reporting application that submits requests with 5 queries to
Oracle and then massages the answer sets into a report before sending it
back to the browser.

There are 7 x 4 x 4 x 3 different ways the reports can be requested (by
choosing different combinations of radio buttons and dates from dropdown
boxes), and all work fine except for one report which will time out every
single time ONLY on our production web server and ONLY when using week and
month ending dates starting this past May . . .

I can run the problem report from our production web server, accessing
production data, with any dates after April 30 and it will time out every
time and write an unresponsive request message in the server.log file. Dates
before May 1 work fine.

I can run the problem report from our development and integration servers,
also accessing production data, with any dates after April 30 (and before
May 1) and it works fine every time!

So it appears that the problem is not with the data.

I have compared cfm and date files between the different environments using
WinMerge and everything appears to be identical except for the expected
differences in references to data sources in the different environments . .
. and when I switch these differences to point to production data, the
reports work.

So it appears it is not something in the code.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this problem ONLY on the production
server and ONLY with dates starting on May 1? Where would you look next to
try to find the source of this problem?

Thanks!

java.lang.NullPointerException - Part 1 of 2

2004-05-04 Thread Earl, George
(Part 1 0f 2 - the line counter got me)

Sorry for the length of this message . . .

I'm getting a java.lang.NullPointerException on a cfprocresult tag inside a
cfstoredproc tag (at least this is what CF debugger points to). The stored
procedure returns three very small answer sets and I get the error on the
third one. If I comment out the third one I get the same error on the second
one, etc. I'm running CFMX 6.1 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server against DB2
7.x on z/OS using IBM JDBC Type4 drivers. If I switch to ODBC_socket drivers
the call to the stored procedure works fine. This process has been
bulletproof on CF 5.0 for almost three years . . .

Here's the error that comes back to the browser:

CFMX 6.1 and IBM JDK 1.3.1?

2004-04-16 Thread Earl, George
We are having trouble getting CFMX 6.1 to see our z/OS DB2 stored procedures
using the IBM Type 4 JDBC drivers. Apparently the IBM drivers do not support
the SUN JDK 1.4.2 that CF is running on and we are being asked to switch CF
to IBM's JDK 1.3.1. Seems to me like they are asking us to let the tail wag
the dog. Thoughts?

I assume that you both mean that the CF template would call one stored

Point taken. It was one of our database people who asked if CF would allow

How to streamline a request that uses many cfquery statements?

2004-04-13 Thread Earl, George
This feels like a dumb question, but here goes . . .

Am I correct that in a CF template that has, say, 15 cfquery statements the
cfquery statements are submitted one at a time with each subsequent cfquery
not submitted until the previous cfquery returns? I.e., if all 15 queries
have to run and there is no logic in the markup that arranges or rearranges
the order in which the queries run do they run one at a time in sequence
from top to bottom?

Is there a way to have multiple queries running from the same cf template at
the same time?

We produce a report that is essentially three reports bundled into one and
displayed one after the other. Currently we run 15 queries (3*5) to create
this report and it takes 3 - 3 1/2 minutes for the queries to complete.
Logically it seems that we could run the three report processes concurrently
and independently and then assemble them into the final report when the
answer sets come back which should dramatically speed up the process. Is
there a way to do this with CF?

(We're using Oracle 8i, CF5, migrating to CFMX 6.1, on Windows 2000 Advanced
Server.)

Thanks!

So what are you both using for your timeout setting to allow for the long db
requests?

We increased our timeout to 210 seconds(!) to accommodate a set of reports
that each use 5 queries against Oracle. According to the CF debugger output
the 5 queries usually take about 180 seconds total and CF processing takes
only about 65ms.

We have simultaneous requests set to 20.

We are using CF5 Enterprise on Windows 2000 Advanced Server, a quad
processor (700MHz each) server, 4GB RAM.

We almost never go over 20% CPU usage or .5GB of RAM usage . . . But I think
we have I/O issues as our WWW Publishing service keeps stopping on Monday
mornings (our busiest day) after we spike from our normal 40 concurrent
users to 140 - 270 concurrent users . . . I'm pretty sure the true number of
concurrent users isn't anywhere near 270 and that this is a symptom of an
underlying problem . . . the server gets between 3500 - 7700 requests an
hour on Monday mornings . . .

RE: Flex is out

2004-03-30 Thread Earl, George
Rob asked:
> Why does it cost so much?

A few years back we used a product called HTMLTransit to convert Word
documents, Excel documents and documents in other formats to HTML. After an
initial investment in building a template that mapped the styles in the
original document to HTML it was a simple matter of clicking a button to
scan folders full of these documents to convert them to HTML. HTMLTransit
cost all of $499. For a bit more money you could get the server piece that
would sniff for new files and perform scheduled scans and upload the HTML
files to your web server. It was a great product at a great price.

Then along came Big Company who bought out the company that developed
HTMLTransit. Big Company repositioned the product to $4999/copy and they
gave everyone 60 days to extend their subscriptions at the old price (so we
did, and of course they released no major updates during that two year
period, but that's another story).

When I asked our contact at the old company that had developed HTMLTransit
why Big Company was increasing the price 10x he said it was because they
believed HTMLTransit had hit a wall at its price of $499 and that there was
a whole world of potential enterprise customers who would not take seriously
a product priced at just $499. For each Big Customer they won they could
lose ten small customers and still break even . . . they lost us . . .

Take a look at Coast WebMaster:

It's a great site management/maintenance utility, very powerful - I've been
using it for years.

It's a bit pricey, I think around $1000 with additional charge for a two
year subscription if you want to keep it current, but if you have a large
site it will pay for itself very quickly.

They have a 15 day trial you can download.

CF Admin Server Reports - no access privileges

2004-03-12 Thread Earl, George
We're running CF 5.0 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

When I try to access the Server Reports in CF Admin/Tools I get:

Error retrieving report.
No access privileges.

... over where the report output is supposed to appear. The reports had been
working fine before. Ideas what caused them to break and how I can get them
back?

(I don't have access to the server beyond CF Admin and FTP . . .)

Thanks!

As someone who is being squeezed into moving MX to SunONE in the near future
this isn't giving me a lot of warm fuzzies . . .

Our Oracle client is up-to-date for the version of the database that we are
using, and we hope to do network tracing later this morning to see what is
happening between our web server and our database server.

Meanwhile we discovered that the ODBC drivers supplied with CF 5.0 work just
fine even though the native drivers break so we have switched over our
applications to the ODBC data sources while we troubleshoot the native ones.
I expect to be asked at some point why we are using resources to try to fix
the native drivers problem when the ODBC drivers are working 'just fine'. I
know the standard answers (performance, speed, robustness, scalability,
ability to use native database functions, etc.), but does everyone think
these are valid and worth pursuing?

We have also renamed the old native data sources that we created using the
old database server and created new ones using the new database server -
didn't resolve the problem.

With the native data sources through CF broken we were able to establish a
successful connection to the database using SQL Plus (but then we realized
we probably should have had the SQL Plus connection established before the
native data sources broke so we could see if the SQL Plus connection broke
as well, so we'll try that too.

Thanks!

Can't maintain Oracle connectivity - CF 5.0

2004-02-11 Thread Earl, George
How do I find out what version of the native Oracle DataDirect drivers
ColdFusion 5.0 Enterprise is using?

Are there updated native (and ODBC for that matter) Oracle drivers available
for CF 5.0?

All of a sudden we cannot maintain our Oracle connectivity using the native
drivers (haven't yet tried switching to the ODBC drivers). All data sources
using these drivers are failing, even ones that we have not used when the
failures occur. If we restart the ColdFusion Application service we get back
our connectivity for just a few minutes before all the Oracle data sources
go down again (the CF Application service still shows as running and CF
still appears to be functioning normally after the data sources go down, we
just discovered that restarting the service restores the Oracle connectivity
- for a few minutes) and the pattern repeats all through the day. When the
Oracle data sources in CF Admin are down we can still connect to Oracle
using the Oracle tools on the server. DB2 data sources and Excel data
sources are not affected and continue to function normally.

The only change (and it's a big one!) to our environment is that last
Wednesday our Oracle database moved to a new bigger and faster server. It
was not a db upgrade, just a move to a new box. We had no problems Thursday
and Friday and the performance improved dramatically. When we left Friday
everything was just fine. When we came in Monday morning we could not keep
the Oracle connections through ColdFusion open.

Our Oracle folks say they see nothing on their end that would be causing us
to lose our connectivity (they've taken a trace which they sent off to
Oracle). We have had the usual load to the web server since the problem
started.

We're using CF 5.0 Enterprise for Windows, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, IIS
5.0 on a quad-processor 700MHz server with 4GB RAM hitting Oracle 8i. Limit
simultaneous requests is set to 7. This setup has given us absolutely no
problems for two years . . . until now . . .

Any ideas what could be causing our Oracle native drivers to keep failing
and how to fix them?

No, the service does not show as stopped, it shows as still running, but it
won't serve pages. Manually stopping and starting the service does not
always fix the problem, but restarting the service seems to, as does
rebooting the server

Won said:

We are using both Oracle 8i (using the DataDirect native drivers supplied
with CF 5.0) and DB2 7.x on OS/390 (using both ODBC and DataDirect native
drivers supplied with CF 5.0).

My bad, you are right. We are using Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

More clues. Looking at the server statistics from yesterday when this
incident happened I see that from 9:00am to 1:00pm the number of concurrent
users climbed steadily from about 25 to 230 at which point the server began
returning the 'Cannot display page' message for all http requests. When we
restarted the WWW service the concurrent user count immediately dropped back
to 25 - 30 where it has stayed ever since . . .

Also, it's probably misleading for my subject to say that the www publishing
service shuts down since in Control Panel it still shows as if it is running
. . .

SOT: Web server's www publishing service keeps shutting down

2004-02-02 Thread Earl, George
We are running CF 5.0 Enterprise on Windows 2003 Advanced Server with IIS
5.0. The server is a quad-processor (700MHz) with 4GB RAM and 2 NICs.

We have a strange problem with our intranet site. On a fairly regular basis
the WWW Publishing service shuts down rendering the web server invisible so
that any http requests to the server return a 'Page cannot be displayed'
error message. Usually when this happens we cannot successfully ping the
server either, but sometimes we can. This problem seems to happen most on
days when we have a heavy load of traffic, which for us means about 60,000 -
80,000 page views between 7:00am - 6:00pm with about 30 - 40 concurrent
users. About a third of these page views are queries to Oracle and to DB2 on
OS/390. When this happened last week, about four hours before the service
stopped the number of concurrent users started to increase steadily till it
peaked at about 135 concurrent users, then it dropped straight down to the
expected 30 - 40 concurrent users (with no apparent effect on the server),
then two hours later the service stopped. We could find nothing in the CF
Admin logs nor in the Windows event log that indicated there was any problem
. . . Any ideas what might be causing this problem with the WWW Publishing
service?

Thanks!

Well, all I needed to do was mention our problem and we stumble on the
solution, which was to drop the IBM JDBC .jar files into the
\ColdFusionMX\Lib\ folder . . . which may have appeared elsewhere but which
I found in Simon Horwith's column in the Jan 2004 CFDJ . . . thanks Simon .

3rd party db connectivity drivers vs. vendor db connectivity driv ers

2004-01-21 Thread Earl, George
Here's a pretty interesting whitepaper from DataDirect about the advantages
of using third party database connectivity drivers over vendor supplied
drivers (click on Download White Paper when you get there):

http://nct.digitalriver.com/fulfill/0028.138/download/2004-cd0e403c7de02a927
5d8c8aa211f766b-3

75d8c8aa211f766b-3>

I'm curious if others agree with DataDirect's position and if you feel they
make valid points or if you feel they are just blowing their own horn.

We are having a heck of a time getting CFMX 6.1 (Enterprise, standalone,
Windows 2000 Adv Server) to work with IBM's JDBC Type 4 DB2 drivers for
OS/390. We have the DataDirect DB2 drivers working but our systems people
want us to use the IBM drivers . . . The whitepaper specifically mentions
the problems we are having trying to set up the IBM drivers as a reason to
stay away from vendor supplied drivers . . . But I thought that generally
speaking vendor supplied drivers were supposed to be 'better'. Thoughts?

Also, what about support? Does anyone have war stories about trying to get
support when connectivity between CF and your database of choice goes south?
Who do you call? Macromedia? DataDirect? The database vendor?

Thanks!

We have just started this very same discussion here and we need to do all of
those things you  mentioned above. We build relatively sophisticated
reporting applications that use thousands of lines of _javascript_ (with CSS)
and multiple visible and hidden frames to create the user interface
experience the users want. It's quickly becoming very cumbersome and more
complicated than we are comfortable with. So we are starting to think about
Flash RIA as an alternative. I'd love to hear about others' experiences in
this area and what people have found to be the best resources for
researching this approach.

And, pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by 'a select box that when
you type the results are narrowed'?

I went to a MM seminar on the Studio MX 2004 suite and I remember the
presenter saying (and showing us) that Flash MX 2004 can use the same style
sheets as your HTML pages. The Flash crowd ooohed and aaahed over that one.
But I don't know how much CSS capability Flash actually has . . .

Request timed out - what does this mean?

2003-12-16 Thread Earl, George
When CF terminates a request based on the timeout parameter set in the CF
Admin, and when the request being terminated is an SQL query or a request to
a stored procedure (i.e., the error message in the log includes the SQL or
the name of the stored procedure), is it safe to assume that the request
ended with the answer set from the SQL or stored procedure still not
returned to the web server? Or could it be that the answer set came back to
the web server and the cfm page is still processing it? Thanks!

MS Excel data sources on Solaris . . .

2003-12-04 Thread Earl, George
Will MS Excel data sources work on Solaris? We are preparing to migrate from
Windows to Solaris. We have a number of apps that use CF queries to access
Excel spreadsheets and then build reports from the returned answer sets.
Will this still work on Solaris or do we need to rethink our approach?
Thanks!

Merant or IBM JDBC Type4 drivers for DB2 OS/390?

2003-10-10 Thread Earl, George
Does anyone have experience with CFMX 6.1 (particularly J2EE, on Win2K Adv
Server) using the JDBC Type4 drivers for DB2 supplied by Macromedia (Merant
- DataDirect?) and/or the ones supplied by IBM to access DB2 on OS/390?

We have the Merant/DataDirect drivers working but we haven't tried the IBM
drivers yet (so we have no basis for a performance comparison). With the
Merant/DataDirect drivers we will have full control over creating,
configuring, deleting data sources, but we will also be responsible for
fixing problems and getting support from MM/Merant/DataDirect/IBM. With the
IBM drivers our DB2 Connect team will assume complete control over creating,
configuring, deleting data sources (we'll lose some flexibility and control)
and will also assume responsibility for fixing problems and dealing with IBM
for support.

Thoughts or comments?

I can't help you directly, but I have a pretty strong memory of seeing
Jeremy Allaire demonstrate this functionality (although maybe to a land

2000. And maybe it was even part of the demo of the upcoming 'Neo' that

Have you checked the Developer's Exchange? (Sorry, had to ask . . .)
