Stus-List Mertec folding prop removal
I have a C 30 MK1 “675” It has a 2GM20F with a folding Mertec prop. I’m trying to remove it. I have the blades off and there is a collar that has a 3/8 square drive showing. My question is how do I get the rest of the prop off to install my new Cambel sailprop. Re: Stus-List Racing a 30-1
Real good questions. from what I gather fewer sometimes is better. That being said I don't think the driver should anything but drive and direct positions. The tactician needs to focus. he can lose the race by simple missing a start or a mark. Racing: - Captain/Helm - overall commander and drives boat - Tactician - Usually next to captain. Decides course and calls manuvers - Mainsail Trimmer - Often the captain will handle this on a very small boat. Trims main. - Headsail trimmers - Trim and tack headsail. Often trim spinnaker too - Pit - On small boats often done by trimmers. controls hallyards and topping lift and downhaul - Mast - Jumps sails and handles spinnaker pole on symmetrical spinnaker boats - Bow - The poor bastard who rigs headsails, skirts headsails and is generally yelled at by everyone. Most important person on boat. The ones in blue you can do without. If you are furled on your head-sail or not, you still need the position. Good luck. Let us know how it goes. As soon as we got clear water, we deployed the genoa (and furled it to about 100%) the boat became more balanced, easy going, and was actually heeling less than on main only.. On the other hand, when the winds are more moderate main only seems fine if a good bit slower. Re: Stus-List Mast Rake on CC 30 MK1
Well, The weekend before that I did put up just the 115%. I did have lighter wind 7 to so 12 but I lost steering as well. I think my next go at it I will do a single reef and the 115% see if that works better? I thought maybe the rake was wrong or the inner shrouds to loose? I have all hank on sails, so I cant just take in canvas when I need to. I also learned its hard work with 18 to 25 wind. On Wed, May 27, 2015 at 12:49 PM, Rick Brass via CnC-List cnc-list@cnc-list.com wrote: Curtis; Basically, it is always easier to balance the boat with both main and headsail up. The 110 would probably have been about the right headsail for the conditions you describe. Boats of the generation we have - with large fore triangles, masthead rigs, and sometimes 170% genoas - were designed to be powered by the headsail more than more current designs. I usually just use my headsail on those occasions when I chose to put up only one for some reason or other. As far as when to reef the main, I can't really give a firm answer. It depends on conditions and how the boat is performing. If you are fighting the helm, if the boat wants to round up and can't be balanced, if the rail is in the water, or if the Admiral is giving you dirty looks, it is probably past time to reef. Hull speed on your boat is probably in the neighborhood of 6 1/2 knots. All the sail area in the world won't make the boat go significantly faster. All the excess sail area does is put the rail in the water and make you work harder than needed. It appears to be where mine is now leaking from (of course!) Re: Stus-List The stern squats at high speed
Hi Tom - I 1981 30-1 675M81E, My boat has the Mertec 18 R 2 blade folding prop. It squats under 3/4 throttle as well. While it will not hurt a thing, you will get better traction and economy if you move some ballast forward The boat will have more waterline and moving more efficiently threw the water.Sometime it don't take much, With my boat I put a secondary water tank under the v-birth 12 gallon. Now I get her up to speed and back down to around 2200 rpm's and she catches hull speed.Well, When she has a clean dottom. Re: Stus-List wishing you the best of Solstice
I did just that. I got certified and started cleaning the bottom of my boat only to find out it is very hard work. So I have been paying 75 bucks a month and its eating my lunch. So I will try again this spring. I got the 7 mill suite a bit thick for South Carolina, I know but I was not sure what to buy. Sometime here in the summer it needs it twice a mnth. It will make my trip to the haul out next month much quicker. With a dirty bottom the four hour trip can take eight hour or more. Even in nice winter weather, that's not much fun. Stus-List CC30 MK1 to windward
I have not had a lot of windward experiences with my new CC. Its an old boat but 4 years new to me. It looks like it points well thew I do loose some control of steering and some weather helm. So far most all of sailing her has been in the rivers around Beaufort and Charleston SC. Have not been off shore but a few times with light wind. So I would love to here if these boats handle well in bigger wind and waves like offshore or near shore. Like 29% to so 40% off the nose with 4 to 6 foot seas on the nose? Is it comfortable as far as 30 footer class boats go? Thanks for your incite. I cant wate to get some sail-time off shore this winter and spring. It would have been a simple matter to use the old windows as a template for cutting new ones had I needed them. I ordered the spline and backing from southshoreyachts.com for maybe $60 for all 4 windows (other listers had mentioned alternate sources for less dough). I installed it in an hour or two. The original spline had dried out and was white and chalky - the new spline fit perfectly and the leaks are a thing of the past. Looks like new too. Re: Stus-List CC30MK1 sail plan
Thanks Antoine, Thanks for the help. I have a question for you. When you and I talked before you told me you upgraded your standing rigging for off-shore sailing, Well did you change your spreaders or do anything to sturdy them up? Both of mine are pined on and will move around a little, like 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch front to back? Is this normal. I had an inspection done by a rigger and he said my standing rigging looked great and maybe sometime ago it may have been changed. no reason to worry about the rigging he said. The port side I can see the chin He said id not look to be 33 years old to him? I should only replace if its bad right? Anyway back to the sails. I have never used a hank on reef-able head sail. Should I use this as my working sail and reef in heavy wind? or would you suggest replacing it with a storm jib? Keep in mind I will be coastal cruising mostly, Maybe going to the Caribbean an the Bahama's. If all goes well with the wife maybe other ports of call. Part of the original question, I was looking for the comfort ratio for the CC30 mk1 as far as pitch yaw and roll, compared to other boats its size. I also wanted to know how well it will do in the waves? How well it drives threw. How well it recovers. Did the Rose have a mertec 2 blade folding prop? My Auxiliary power is a 2gm20F with 20 Gal fuel tank under the steering helm. 18 Gals of water starboard side under the seat, 10 Gal under the v-birth 13 Gal holding tank. My inventory looks like this. 1) Standard working main. Full batten 3 reef points 2) Racing main. Full batten 3 reef points 3) Asymmetrical cruising spin with sock 4) Hank on 110% Head sail with 2 reef points 5) Hank on 135% 6) Hank on 170% I guess what I am getting at with all this; My wife have sailed the East Coast Lady hard for 2 years now. She is a very fun boat. Her acceleration when the wind picks up if fantastic. I can trim her out on a broad reach and almost sail hands free. We just have not taken her out on the ocean. We live some 10 miles from the ocean, Up the Port Royal sound in Beaufort SC. We both are wondering if we should use this boat as a trainer before moving to a larger, more ocean capable vessel? As I said before most of it will be coastal harbor hopping. With a few 1 to 2 night offshore trips here and there. Just trying to bounce the Idea of keeping this boat. She is such a good boat. Re: Stus-List Prop size/pitch for a Yanmar 1GM10 in a 27 MkII
Here in Beaufort South Carolina we have to clean the bottom every three to 4 weeks otherwise it fouls the bottom. If you hold for 5 weeks here you will start getting hard growth. Do like I did and learn to do it your self. You can save a lot of cash and know the job is done right. My CC30 MK1 can be done by free diving. No scuba tanks needed. However it makes it easier so I do use the scuba method . You will need to keep the bottom clean to reach the correct hull speed and correct RPM's for your Yanmar. I have the Yanmar 2GM20F in my Boat. If I let the bottom go past time to clean the bottom go very long The Engine will show it .When you go to the boat and warm up the engine, Look at your rudder see if it has a film or a light carpet on it. If so you are right on time for a cleaning. One other thing some folks forget is to keep a clean air filter in the boat. If the engine cant breath she will blow black smoke. Yes, in the wiring loom facing the front of the engine the harness will have an inline fuse. it runs from the Starter to the start switch. I will send you a link to the diagram. It's a 30 amp fuse. Sometimes it needs a good cleaning sometime a new fuse. Re: Stus-List Thoughts on repowering with outboard
I had to replace the 2gm15 diesel in my CC 30 within the first year of owning the boat. I am in no way a mechanic. I got the boat for $2,500.00 bucks and knew it had some issues. I took it on as a project boat. The boat had been sitting in the saltwater for 5 years unattended without flushing out the saltwater. The little 2 cylinder yanmar ran for 22 hrs and died. I shopped around and found a low hour 2GM20F on E-Bay. I removed the old engine and installed the newer one using my boom and a com-a-long. It was easy-peasy. It took some time and some learning as I went. But I got it done and the engine cost $2,500. That's right as much as the boat! But now I have a great little engine and a fantastic Boat. I now have a skill set in which I can help others or myself if I ever need to use it. I would suggest the DIY projects are not near as hard as they seem. I know you can save a bundle of loot. We all could use more cruising kitty. I say snatch it out and have it rebuilt or pick up a good used one and install it yourself. Good luck. Even if yours is complaining (or unhappy) with your current flaky A4, trust me, she will be much less happy with the outboard. I know, there are better brackets and there are electric start motors, but the inboard provides (normally) much more reliable and (readily available) power. I solved the problem by moving to a bigger boat (as Kim below), but that's another story. FWIW I would never go back to Outboard. My Catalina 27 had a 15hp and was pretty well designed for it. Transom had a cut out in the middle and the motor simply tilted up into this cut out- no bracket. There was room on either side for a 5 gal gas can. There was enough power(note this was a 15hp and not the 9.9 suggested) but chop was a problem as the prop would come out of the water. And it didn't have electric start so you had to pull the cord to start it in a very awkward position. If you go with an outboard you'll likely be stuck with a bracket. With some bracket installations (and a well installation on a Henderson 30 I sailed on) you are starting the motor with it in the air and then dropping it down so it has access to cooling water. Again very awkward positions to start if using a pull cord. You will be likely limited on motor size by the weight limit of the bracket so pay attention. You can get it to work but you are just trading one set of issues for another. If you simply use the motor to get out of the harbor on nice days or to the race course, it is certainly viable. If you just race- get a 3.5HP and take it off before the start and stow below if your PHRF allows;-) If you cruise and motor extensively then the drawbacks will increase- cavitating in chop; undersized HP (due to weight concerns); limited battery charging. And as others have alluded the cost comparison needs to include any needed transom reinforcement; the bracket; motor; remote controls (you really don't want to be adjusting throttle and shifting by reaching over the transom); and removing the old running gear and plugging the shaft hole. Good luck I know how frustrating a flaky motor can be. In my case I solved it by buying a bigger boat with a diesel... Re: Stus-List dual ownership?
If you are anal about your stuff sure I would not do it. But if you can share in the cost and the now the difference between abuse and ware and tear, you may reconsider. My wife and I are not retired and will be another 5 or 6 years. My sailing partner gets the lion share of sail time. But more importantly some one is using the boat and making daily repairs as needed and keeping systems up and running. That way when I get to the boat on the weekend the boat is in great shape. dockedge and insh is around $4000. a year then there is the bottom cleaning I do my self. it would cost $75.00 bucks each time to have it cleaned. I got certified to do it my self. saves a bundle. In South Carolina it has to be done twice a month in the warmer months. April - December. Some people never share there stuff. You'll find these are the same people that would never entertain a boat share situation. Most will not share a drill with there neighbor. Another issue is to decide up front about any potential upgrades (one person wants a new Kevlar racing sail, the other an upgrade to the head or one wants to spend max $100 a year for upgrades, the other does not mind $5000). The partnership agreement is similar to a real estate limited partnership with a general partner (takes care of finances, insurance, taxes etc.) and a limited partner. We started at 50/50 with a mechanism to compensate (with ownership share) if one partner contribute more $$ over time. We have a partnership[p checking account with auto deposit of monthly contribution. Scheduling has rarely been an issue but we had a practice of alternating years for first pick of major holidays etc. Lately we have been setting up the race sched in January and discussing what other events/cruises may be interesting. Both our spouses are dis-inclined to go out with us for more than a day sail unless we line up extra crew to assist with the sail handling. We both race, splitting duties and sharing/discussion tactical decisions. Fortunately we have had similar ideas of budget and level of completion. We double-hand race from time to time and have been able to deal with heat of the moment race decisions without creating long term inter-personal issues. My best advice for boat partnerships is to pick a partner that is a good person first, good sailor second, ability to pay third, Next have a written separation agreement that makes it possible to un-wind the partnership when things change. Some separation clauses I have seen include the right of one partner to buy out the other before offering the share for sale, others with the ability of the remaining partner to veto a unsuitable new partner. I Co-Own The East Coast Lady. It was not a hard choice for me. I would never be able to keep my boat at the marina as I do now, with the $ help of a partner. My sailing partner is 10 or 12 years older than me and my wife. This works out for the older couple now. We can only sail on the weekends and vacations. They can sail every day. 10 years from when we retire, we will be sailing all the time and partner will be tired and only want to sail once in a while. The boat is mine on paper and will remain so. The deal to the partner is we split the operational cost, up-fit cost, Maintenance fuel fees dockage, haul-out fees, etc. etc. you own the boat and share the rest. Work out sailing times. It has worked great for us and to be quite frank the 2 of us don't use it enough. Just make sure you explain going into the relationship the the deal has nothing to do wioth ownership. Its only usage. Make sure they are as anal as you on the cleaning of the bottom and the bird poop on top. Make sure you like them cause you will find your self sailing with him more than you think. Re: Stus-List seacocks
I have a CC30 MK1 with a updated 2GM20F . I run the engine compartment blower to suck out the heat and vent the area while running. But not for the extraction of CO2. I haven't worried about that. With an open forward hatch and and the cockpit hatch open pushing no less than 3 knots of winds threw the cabin house I would not think it CO2 be a problem. Maybe it could be a problem on the hook charging batteries in a rain, with the boat sealed up and not venting the exhaust. Sea Cocks. I have my boat at the dock. I visit it weekly, some times 2 times a week. The Sea cocks are always closed unless needed. This habit makes you work them or not sail. It is a great policy for required maintenance. If they stay closed unless needed you will give them a work out each time you use the boat. I have a 1) Port side cock pit drain, 2) I have a starbord cockpit drain that has a Y fitting to drain the gally sink. 3) I have a raw water intake for the engine. 4) I have a raw water intake for the head. 5) I have a drain for the Head 6) I have a drain for the Head sink They all get a turn or two each week. My only real concern is the rudder design (swept back, scimitar shaped). Does this design cause excessive tiller pressure when reaching in heavy air? How is it for steering when backing into a marina? I see that in 1976 they redesigned the rudder. I have not seen a decent 1976-78 mk1 for sale in my area yet. Message-ID: 64B00EE9B7AA4D91A1796577FE661724@GaryPC Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 There's a little L bracket in the stainless tube which holds the cable (I only know of the throttle, as the shift seems to be OK, but I replaced the throttle). I seem to remember it is held by the screw near the top wooden support, but yours could be different. I'll look today. There is nothing at the lever end which should cause resistance. The levers are just pivoted on a shaft. You have to pull the top of the binnacle up to get the cable out, the plate is held by the three screw headed bolts. Once they are removed, you can get to the shaft which holds the lever, remove the little cotter pin (careful, it can get lost) and remove the lever. The cable end is a fork-like piece and is held by a little shaft with another cotter pin. It was pretty straight forward once I got the three screws (actually five, there are two on the side screwed into the stainless tube) out. You may have the same problem I did - the cable rusted from the inside and started to disintegrate - it eventually came apart and I had to hold it together with duct tape and some plastic spiral cable wrap until I could get a replacement. The inside cable was OK, but the outer sheathing came apart and when it could no longer hold the cable, there was nothing to push against fun! No state can require you to show state reg. numbers on a Federally documented boat. That is a Federal law. States can still require you to register your boat, pay an annual fee or property tax, and require you to display a sticker indicating you have paid the fee or tax. Here is South Carolina my Vessel is a federal documented boat. South Carolina still taxes me on the boat but they do not register it if it is a federal documented boat. However if it in not a federal documented vessel than a stat registration id required. There is no tax incentive or benefit for federal registration. South Carolina taxes it on the value of the boat minus deprecation to a set low value of like $250.00 My tax burden is like $117.00 The term Value is the only word to watch out for. This nice young German lady sold a bunch of stuff, moved out of the land lubbers house and bought a boat to explore the globe. She's really fun and inspiring to watch. She bought this somewhat derelict Henke Super 10 in Panama and going through a MAJOR refit. Everything on the boat was a major project. I'm talking EVERYTHING. Doing the bottom job she found several corrosion holes in the Aluminium yep they had to do some pretty major welding to patch the holes.. The mold growing on the teak in the cabin looked like Bonsai trees growing out of the cabinets. (Makes me itch just typing this ..) Anyway, the videos are nicely edited (No shaky teenage phone cam crap here) and great to watch. She's an impressive (And attractive) 32 year old young lady. Maybe all of you do for all I know! Unlike certain lists and forums, this place has been mostly free of off topic sniping and flame wars. The worst outbreaks seem to be about old sports cars or inflatable cows. A certain place that is known for anarchy has some long-standing wars that have included people trying to get other people fired from their jobs and accusations of real life major crimes. I would love for this list to stay free of that stuff and humbly request that this kind of thing cease and desist.
