Thats what I was told by Fiberlay the local fiberglass supplier, and the
"expert" I talked to prior to buying supplies to build my holding tank. But
then he told me I needed 5 gallons of polyester resin, I used 1.

My humble opinion is that sailboat racing is something you do, not watch. In
going with foils the organizers are trying to make it interesting to watch. I
don’t find it so. They are only going 40 mph; speedy for a sailboat, but you
can practically walk that fast! The part of racing I find most
interesting—tactics and boat interactions—is missing. In these matches they're
just banging opposite corners hoping they’ve chosen the right one.
I think using foils has cost them a large part of their audience. I certainly
am not watching or caring about the sailing, but with the IACC boats I was
riveted. The last race in that class came down to the seventh race of a seven
race finals and the boats finished overlapped! That was exciting!

Subject: Stus-List Calypso 1971 C 43 update

Calypso’s 5+ year restoration continues, and may be picking up pace.  I got
distracted from the rebuild by selling a business, retiring, moving to Port
Ludlow (near Port Townsend WA) and of course, the Covid-19 pandemic. A recap:
Calypso, a C design “Limited Edition” built by Bruckmann’s in late 1970,
launched as Arieto in January 1971, hull #1 of +-15 hulls sold. After a
successful racing career out of Boston it was sold to the Great Lakes as first
Phantom then Esta Es and raced in many Chi-Mac races.  We purchased her in late
1998 and trucked her out west to Seattle.   From 1999 to 2015 we raced and
cruised Calypso around the PNW including a 2015 summer trip around Vancouver
Island.  At the end of that summer it was clear the 44 years of hard miles and
exposure had taken its toll.  There was rotted balsa core in +-20 sq ft of
deck, multiple bulkheads with rotted plywood near the hull, 300 old fastener
holes that needed epoxy filling, tired deck, topsides, and interior paint, and
many more old boat issues.   Today, most of the major repairs are complete,
some needed structural upgrades added (used the original C drawings to guide
us), and she is almost ready for the paint shed planned for this spring or
early summer.  We will move Calypso from its Shilshole Bay Marina slip to the
Port Ludlow marina as soon as a slip is available.  I can see the marina from
my house and drive there in 5 minutes, 6 if there’s traffic so the pace of
project completion will pick up considerably.   Aprox. 5 years ago I switched
to following the cnc-list via the digest. The recent list software upgrade
pushed me back to the “full meal deal” of receiving all the emails.  As I now
have a good working knowledge of them,  I will chime in if I see any questions
from owners of Bruckmann built C from the early 70’s.   Martin

Not trying to redirect the thread, but since you raised the topic of

I've had Tacktick (Raymarine) wind system for about 5 years, and I've added
inputs from GPS, speed/depth, so have a fair bit invested in the system.
However, I've never really had satisfactory performance with the wind sensor,
it drops out more that half the time, and for racing that makes it almost
useless.  This summer I put a new battery and bearings in the sensor, got
marginally better performance, then I tried hoisting one of my displays up to
the spreaders (don't ask) to see if it acts as a relay to the sensors in the
cockpit, and that didn't help much.  Finally got through to someone in the UK
(I think) in Raymarine's tech support, who pretty much told me that a 50' mast
is really too far for the wind sensor.

So my question too: what have others found with regards the the Tacktick wind
and at what mast height are you using them?

For those of you who haul your boats for the winter (like I do), what’s your
preferred way to clean the bottom after hauling out - especially if you have
VC-17?

I’ve pressure-washed mine in years past, and plan to again this weekend.  But

What do y’all do?

Hi listers!
Quick question for anyone out there who might know if there might be C logo
mugs available or even regatta hats with the C logo?
I still have my collection of Sabre and Albin Vega mugs, hats and tee shirts.
I’d love to get some coffee mugs for the boat.
Café Press had the Vega mugs but I couldn’t find and C designs of any kind on
that site

Re: Stus-List Filling diesel tank

Scepter Military Fuel  20l plastic, two on ebay for sale now  $100.00.
I have been using them for 10 years, never leak and no-spill if you use their
fill spout.
Very  pricey but the last can you will have to buy.

Subject: Stus-List Filling diesel tank

I will soon be topping off my diesel tank for the winter, which I usually do by
pouring fuel through a funnel with a water filter from a 5 gal jerry can.  I
have found it nearly impossible to pour into the funnel from a full 5 gal
container and hit the funnel without spilling diesel all over the transom and
into the water if still at the dock.  Has anyone found a device that works or
come up with a clever way to transfer fuel without spilling?  Thanks- Dave

Hi David,
I Have been using
I have been using Bristol Amber Urethane Finish with good
results.  The finish on my cabin sole looks like what you see on super yachts.

 #yiv7500550577 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;}So I am refinishing the table
and have removed the aluminum corner pieces to re-paint.   As the original
paint is in fairly good shape with only bits of bare aluminum, still need
primer?  Preferred top coat paint?

And I know this subject has been beaten to death.  Sorry, but a varnish
recommendation for cabin sole?

Looking to replace the cutlass bearing
on my 1985 35 mk3.
Any info would be helpful.
Does the rudder have to be removed or will the shaft slide by it?
Is there a special tool for removing it without removing the shaft?

Thanks

Gerry, I had my cutlass bearing replaced a few seasons ago. I had to
remove the prop and the marina had a special tool that pressed outthe old
bearing and then pressed in a new one without having toremove the shaft.
The answer is yes, such a tool does exist. Askaround and hopefully you will
be able to find a marina who has thetool. It makes life much easier.

The thinner the shaft the less likely those things are to work. The yard that
did mine removed the prop shaft to do the job, their tool would not work on a
7/8” shaft.
The tool is essentially a pipe that fits over the prop shaft that presses the
bearing out with a way to grab the strut and not try and wrench the strut off
the boat. The thicker the cutless bearing (NOT cutlass), the better they work.

We replaced shaft with rudder in place. There is a gadget that presses the
cutlass bearing out with shaft in place. I got me one. I’ve read they’re
finicky. As in, they work great on brand new cutlass bearings. Never used it
because we changed the CB when new shaft installed.
