I probably should ad my brother isn't the most meticulous person I've ever known and I thought the boat looked great. Honestly, looking at your boot-stripes, I don't think you have any reason to believe you won't be perfectly happy with the results. I think you would just need to tent it off to keep dust and other airborne contamination off the curing paint. Re: Stus-List Wax
I did not try rubbing compound as the Awlgrip literature is very adamant that you should not ever do that. Like David, mine is so far gone that it might be worth a try. The Practical sailor test I read actually had different results for longevity depending on the color. The winner for blue was actually the one part Epiphanes over the two part and others. https://www.practical-sailor.com/newspics/charts/32-5-Value3.pdf Dave Dr. David Knecht Professor , Department of Molecular and Cell Biology University of Connecticut 91 N. Re: Stus-List Wax
Thanks for the feedback. Awlgrip is roller/brush friendly. The easier to repair Awlcraft is not. Bummer. Good info on Perfection. May go that route, but thought Awlgrip on Awlgrip would match better, but will reconsider. I read where Awlgrip does not take well to anything more aggressive that what 3M's Finesse can provide. Something about a very narrow window of buffing success and most likely melting the paint. Anyway my transom is well beyond that and is now stripped and sanded ready for final prep and a weather window. David F. Couldn't you bring that paint back to life with some rubbing compound and a orbital buffer? As long as the paint has enough thickness, I would think that would be worth a try - it would be a fairly cheap experiment, at least. I have done amazing things I would have never thought possible with buffing compound. I just went out to look for a part#, but the label is long gone, but I am sure it was 3M somethingorother. I noticed on the Poliglow site that they have a new stripper which appears to be more powerful than Poli-prep. If I would have had more time this year, I would have tried it on my transom. I did use some floor stripper which helped, but something more suited to Poli would be nice. But, sailing calls. Mast up today or tomorrow, whenever the spreader boots arrive. I’ve been using it every spring since buying Cat's Paw (bright red hull) in 2009 with good results. If there is a haze anywhere, Poliglow does not get rid of that, as the directions warn. And getting rid of the haze is hard work (have not tried ammonia, so I will try that this spring). The company recommends removing that haze before applying Poliglow, and if you don’t, the haze is definitely visible under the new Poliglow - haze with a shine!. But if the haze is removed, the result is excellent - very bright and shiny - and it lasts the whole season. It does require 6 or 7 coats, but dries in minutes, so I just go around the boat (with a leather-like rag on a stick) that many times - it takes about 10 minutes to go around once (a 35’ hull). Routinely get comments about how good it looks, and it’s still very bright the following spring when I do it again. Re: Stus-List Wax
Hello all, I have historically had very good experience with PoliGlow in the Chicago area - 16 years, as a matter of fact. That said, for some reason here in Florida, people swear at the stuff (rather than swearing by it). They say it yellows and is nearly impossible to remove. I don't know the reality either way down here, at least as of yet. I understand the remover is ammonia (and industrial strength at that). How difficult is it to remove in reality? For those of you who have worked with it in year-round hot, sunny, seawater exposed environments, what say to about the stuff? I'd really like to go back to it, but I've gotten an awful lot of pushback from the locals... I use this prescription. https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B8pEh5lnvP1yRHJmRThKbl9aN0U I polish with a rotary buffer and finesse-it then hand wax with collonite fleet wax. The key I learned (maybe re-learned) is that the wax has a tendency to dry out and you need to punch through to the bottom to get the juicy wax. That wax goes on smooth and even. It dusts off pretty easily too with a microfiber cloth. One thing I also learned this year is that if your wax dries out too much it can be reconstituted with naphtha thinner...or zippo lighter fluid. I was told that marine wax typically has some abrasive quality. If your finish outs still very smooth I would think a really good car wax would be all you need as they wouldn't have any abrasives in them.
