[cobirds] Huerfano Count Update: Tundra Swan
A Tundra Swan has been present for the last three days at Daigre and Wahatoya Lakes, approximately 1 mile East of La Veta. We were alerted by a neighbor who had seen it. We have attempted to get photos, but never seem to be properly equipped when it is present! It flies off the feed during the day. We have tried searching in the direction it has flown off, but have been unable to locate where it feeds. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Red-throated loons still present!
We went back out to Martin Lake at Lathrop State Park this morning. The two eclipse Red-throated Loons and three Common Loons are still present. They tend be sticking to the middle of the lake…making for distant ID shots. Photos can be seen on CFO Facebook page and Colorado Rare Bird alert Facebook page. If you would like to see them…you really need a spotting scope. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Veery
Hello… Been awhile since we have reported…not much happening down here of late… Until this evening…while sitting on the side porch having a beer with friends, I heard a Veery singing! While Paul stayed with our guests, I ran to get my camera and bins. Was fortunate to be able to photograph and record a video with the song. Love a new yard bird! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Lesser Black-backed Gull
Hello birders, As the day was so beautiful and calm, Paul and I decided to walk around Martin Lake at Lathrop State Park. It was dead quiet all around the lake. No sparrows, chickadees, bushtits, flickers, robins, solitaires, scrub-jays, nuthatches, woodpeckers...it was weird. We did have one Black-billed Magpie A handful of Ravens on the ice A whopping 2 Dark-eyed Juncos 1 Bald Eagle on the ice 1 Red-tailed Hawk There was a good assortment of waterfowl...but just the usual suspects... Common Goldeneye Mallard Canada Geese Common and Hooded Merganser Gadwall Redhead Bufflehead American Wigeon Pied-billed and Clark’s/Western Grebe Amongst a large grouping of Ring-billed Gulls we noticed one very dark-backed gull. When it finally lifted its head and eventually stood up...we were able to see the pale eye, with dense streaking around the eye. Bright yellow bill with red dot...it even yawned and allowed us to see its bright red-orange gape. It was slightly larger than the nearby Ring-Billed Gulls. Bright yellow legs make us confident it was Lesser Black-Backed Gull! I have some very distant poor shots. This is a rare bird for us down this far South and in the back of beyond. It turned out the be the bird of the day. Paul and Polly Neldner La Veta, CO >From Polly's iPad -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Huerfano County: Yellow-billed Cuckoo returns!
Yesterday morning the turmoil all around disappeared for a few brief minutes when I heard the call of a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Called it twice and watched as it flew over my head and landed in a tree behind me... In the Midwest these birds are called Rain Crows. This one conjured a wonderful thunderstorm to help fight the Spring Fire! The fire is now 35% contained, mandatory evacuations have been lifted for County Road 360 and adjacent areas...people are smiling and laughing for the first time since we arrived home from Uganda early afternoon on Monday! You can feel the relief and weight that has been lifted! The Cuckoo returned this morning and I was finally able to capture my favorite part of its call...have tried unsuccessfully so many times before...the low, quiet "pur" at the very end. Have tried to upload a video to CFO Facebook and my own Facebook page. if it is successful, listen very carefully for it. Let us hope it portends more rain! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Common Redpoll
Our little Common Redpoll is definitely not an early riser. Seldom does she make and appearance before 9 am. This morning she held out until 9:50! Had me afraid she would not show at all. At any rate she is here for the 5th straight day...just enough time to make me hopeful she will stay for awhile...but I know enough to realize that may not be the case. She did finally pose in the open for a tiny bit this morning...letting me get one decent shot of her without any man made objects! Pic posted to CFO Facebook page. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Common Redpoll - yesterday and today
Yesterday, while I was still bleary-eyed from sleep and attempting to make coffee, I glanced out the window and saw amongst the Pine Siskins something different. Quickly grabbed my bins, fast thinking before you’ve had that first cup of coffee, and saw a Common Redpoll. Quickly went in and woke Paul. It has been 5 years since we had our first one. That one was a male. This appears to be a female. She has flown off with her flock of Siskins. Hoping she returns. Have posted pics on the CFO Facebook page. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Green Heron
Paul, Scooter, and I were pleasantly surprised to find an adult Green Heron on the South side of Wahatoya Lake this morning. La Veta Trails has been creating some new trails at Wahatoya Lake and it is now fairly easy to walk all the way around the lake. They have also been doing pretty regular maintenance of the trail at Daigre Lake. There is still a steep spot in one area but even with my injury I have no problems getting through. [cobirds] Huerfano County Dickcissel Invasion!
Yesterday while listening to the Dickcissel call during breakfast, I told Paul of all the postings I had been seeing regarding this species. We went out to County Road 360 just to see what we could see. It was while at the Bobolink site at the beginning of 360 that we got our first inkling that we might be under invasion. While we did see and hear 3 Bobolinks...the most common call was that of the Dickcissel. Indeed we continued up 360 and all the way up to where hayfields and locusts gave way to scrub oak we were hearing and seeing Dickcissels continuously. This piqued our curiosity...just how may of this bird could there be around? We did not formally plan to do a survey and did not set out to come up with a 5 mile radius from our home, but during the day ended up exploring all the irrigated and sub-irrigated fields that we could think of on County Roads, 358, 360, 340 and 341. We ended up with somewhere between 75-100 Dickcissels! We became so overwhelmed at the numbers of birds we were seeing we ended up approximating. We only saw our first Dickcissel pair in Huerfano County 5 years ago. Since then we have maybe see a dozen or sobut 75-100 in a day? We are under invasion! We also saw saw 9 Bobolink males on Rds. 358 & 360! Paul and Polly Wren Neldner La Veta, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Yellow-billed Cuckoo
While having coffee on the side porch this morning we heard the long-awaited call of a Yellow-billed Cuckoo! So very happy this species has returned for the 6th year in a row! Our yard now feels full of its' complement of summer residents. Two years ago we had a Black-billed Cuckoo that stayed for 5 days...still hoping the record will be accepted and Huerfano County will have another species on its' list. Have also been hoping and straining the ears to hear one again...but like so many others that visit was probably a one off! [cobirds] Huerfano and El Paso Counties
This morning, before leaving the rain in Huerfano County behind us, Paul saw the female Northern Goshawk at the corner of our property. We were excited to she see is still around as we had not seen her for many weeks! We headed to Fountain Creek Regional Park in hopes of re-finding the Bay-breasted Warbler. While we, and many others, missed the warbler by a day we did re-find: Yellow-billed Cuckoo (FOS for us and quite confiding...for a cuckoo...allowing us continued viewing for quite awhile! 2 female and one lovely male American Redstart Blue Grosbeak Red-eyed Vireo (new Colorado bird for me and my pick for bird of the day!) The trails at the park proved to be very wheelchair friendly. This was our first time out for a full day of birding since I broke my pelvis 7 weeks ago. Have not been able to take being in the car for more than short trips. Was good to be out and about in the fresh air and feel the sun on my face! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Rusty Blackbird, Surf Scoter, Wilson's Snipe, Harris's Sparrow
Yesterday for the Spanish Peaks CBC Paul and I found a Surf Scoter on Daigre Lake. Have pics on CFO Facebook page. This morning we followed Dave Silverman's excellent directions to stalk the 2 Rusty Blackbirds he found yesterday. We flushed a Wilson's Snipe. We were actually headed back to the car thinking one more hour wasted looking for a nemesis bird when one walked out from under a small footbridge! A lifer for both of us on the first day of 2017! No pics this time, but will go back! After an absence of over a week, our Harris's Sparrow made an appearance yesterday just as the light was fading. Just in time to be counted for the CBC. It was there again this morning. Had a very good count yesterday. Unofficial total was 59 species...with three new species, the Surf Scoter, Scaled Quail and a Canyon Towhee! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: White-eyed Vireo
Sorry, forgot to sign the last post!. This was our first morning having our a cup of coffee under the covered porch. Amongst all the "regular" calls was one that was vaguely familiar. I tried numerous times to find a matching call on my phone...but to no avail. Finally started taking the breakfast dishes back inside. Paul came running back the the house saying "Polly come quick, grab your camera...there is a White-eyed Vireo in the yard!" Turns out that was the call we had been hearing but were unable to figure out. Have posted photos to CFO Facebook page as well as my own. This is a new Colorado bird for the both of us and yard bird #164. Have finally decided to report it, even though it is on the checklist for Huerfano County...and according to CBRC...there is no need to report it for Huerfano County...but when I "created a query" for records...there a none listed for Huerfano. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Green Heron, Semipalmated Plover
My ever faithful birding buddy pup (Scooter) and I ventured out to Lathrop State Park this morning in hopes of finding something new. At the wetlands trail we found a Green Heron. It was calling, the marks the 7th year in a row I have seen them at Lathrop. The big surprise was an adorable Semipalmated Plover (the first I have seen at the park in three years) in amongst 6 Spotted Sandpiper on some small rocks directly across from the large group camping area. Pictures can be seen on the CFO Facebook page. Very disturbing to see was the spraying of pesticides on the imported sand at the swim beach area. They did put up small flags warning people to stay off the sandbut as we all know...birds, reptiles, butterflies etc. cannot readgrrr! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: African Collared-Dove, Common Redpoll
Hello All, Due to our trip to Madagascar we did not put out feeders until the middle of November. We, therefore, were not expecting to see anything unusual. The cold snap and fresh snow of the past few days did finally bring around numerous Dark-eyed Juncos, American Goldfinch, White-breasted Nuthatch, Song Sparrow, Hairy Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadee, Spotted Towhee...all the usual suspects and a pair of Cassin's Finch. This morning we awoke to a couple of surprises: In a flock of around 15 Eurasian Collared-Dove was one lone African Collared-Dove, yard bird # 163! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Caspian Tern, Forster's Tern, Blackpoll Warbler, Cattle Egret
While at Lathrop State Park this morning we found a pair of Caspian Terns at Horseshoe Lake. At Martin Lake we found a pair of Forster's Terns, and enjoyed close views of the Caspian Terns as they hunted there. We found a female Blackpoll Warbler just North of North Martin Inlet. Yesterday we found 5 Cattle Egrets at Rio Cucharas Veterinary Clinic next to Hwy. 160. Today we were only able to relocate 2. [cobirds] Oops! Huerfano County Update: Black-billed Cuckoo NO! Dickcissel and Bobolink
Sorry slipped up and did not put my name on the Black-billed Cuckoo update. Cuckoo was NOT heard or seen this morning. Thanks to Eric DeFonso and Gwen Moore for finding and putting a Dickcissel in the scope for me at my neighbors' place just up the road! That was only second time I have seen Dickcissel in Huerfano County! We also saw Bobolink in the same field. Gwen Moore and two birders from Texas and myself then drove out to Cty Rd 360 for a closer look at Bobolinks. We had lovely views from there. Gwen and I then went out to a Rouse Road where we had no luck with the Hepatic Tanager Polly Wren Neldner La Veta, CO Sent from my iPad -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: NO BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO
Went out at 5:30 this morning, listened until 8:00 along with two other Birders. We did not hear the Black-billed Cuckoo. Sad as it makes me to say this, I fear it has elsewhere. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO
As there are some folks who were going to try for the Black-billed Cuckoo today, just wanted to let you know it was calling frequently from 5:00 - 6:45 am this morning. Did learn something kind of interestingat times it would change the volume of its call in mid call...so that one second it seemed quite close and the next second it would seem much farther away...then close again. Not sure how long I should keep posting about the bird...do know there were some people who stated they wanted try for it until this coming week. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Black-billed Cuckoo
Had a report from an early visitor to our yard that the Black-billed Cuckoo was heard and briefly seen at around 5:20 am this morning. Was seen just past Wahatoya Creek on the North side of CTY Rd. 358. Cuckoo was still calling from roughly the same location at shortly after 6:00 am when I took my very sick pup out for a walk. As the bird has been seen three times in the past two days at this location, three visiting birders were holding vigil there when I took Scooter out for another walk at around 10:15 am. The Cuckoo flew right past us to a copse of oaks directly East of our house. I called out to the others, they were rounding the corner as the Cuckoo called. Once everyone was in fairly close, I did try playback briefly. I saw the cuckoo hop up higher in the oaks and then lost track of it. Sadly none of the others saw it. We all looked and listened until 4:30 pm or so with not peep and no other sightings. Paul and I had to leave at around 5:00 pm. There were three different birders watching the site on CTY RD. 358 at that time. As I have not heard from them...am thinking they did not hear or see it either. Hoping it is still around...and if it is gone...so very glad a Black-billed Cuckoo graced our yard for a few days and that some folks were lucky enough to see it. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO Persists!
The Black-billed Cuckoo was seen and heard today in the same spot and very close to the same time as it was yesterday afternoon. Lynne Miller and I had heard it a couple of times earlier in the day. We headed out to Cty Rd 358 at a little before 4:00 as there was a Yellow-breasted Chat calling so loudly in the yard it was drowning out virtually all other calls. We met up with Maggie Boswell and Joyce Takamime near Wahatoya Creek. As the cuckoo has persistently only given one of the 4 calls on my program, I played the call, just once, to them so we would all be listening for the same thing. The cuckoo responded and was eventually seen by all of us! It flew across the road into our yard where a short time later it called once and refused to call again! We knew it was there but could not find it. We had to leave a little after 6 this evening. I do not know if the birders who arrived shortly before we left were successful. Thank you Lynne Miller for an immensely enjoyable day, a very nice lunch, wonderful conversation and for being so patient and stalwart as we waited for that skulker to show itself! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO!
Black-billed Cuckoo still here!!! Was seen earlier this evening by myself, Mark Peterson and his some Wyatt. Wyatt is the youngest birder we have ever had visit our yard We do welcome visitors to our yard, however, there are a couple of caveats: We do request advance notice for a couple of reasons: a) Paul's aging parents live next right next door and become agitated if someone they do not know enters the yard while we are not here. Paul's Dad used to confront folks and ask what they were doing as he cannot get out anymore we don't want to worry him. b) We have a large Boxer named Scooter. The only time he is left to his own devices in the yard is first thing in the morning. Scooter is very friendly, but he is a watch dog and takes very seriously his job to announce and greet visitors. Due to recent rains the grass on our acreage has gotten completely out of control. It is almost waist high. If he comes charging through the grass barking his fool head off, you might not be able to see him coming! Againanyone who has visited our place can attest to his friendliness, just do not want someone having a heart attack when he lumbers up to them! c) As the yard is so overgrown you might want to wear long sleeves and pants to protect against Mosquitos, and proper shoes. We would like to give folks the chance to see or hear the Black-billed Cuckoo as we think he is pretty darned special! [cobirds] Huerfano County Udpate: BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO IN THE YARD!
We have been hearing, quite distant and not distinct a continuous po po po po, pause, po, po, po, po, pause, po po po po call for the last three days. Could never locate it and could not be sure until this evening while having dinner on the side porch when we heard the same call...much closer. Dinner was forgotten as we left the porch to track down the bird. The chase started in the northwest corner of our lot. I admit I cheated and used playback. The Black-billed Cuckoo responded with vigor and popped up briefly before circling the house and landing in the large Box Elder just off the front porch...calling continuously! Oddly this is the same tree and almost the same branch where we saw our first Yellow-billed Cuckoo 4 years ago! We have renamed the tree The Cuckoo Tree. Quite exciting for this is a lifer for both of us and yard bird # 158! Posted a photo to CFO Facebook page and entered a record with CBRC. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and Bobolinks
Decided to drive out County Road 358 for a short distance while Paul was in town with a client. Was very surprised to find a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher sitting on a barbed wire fence! I had recognized it for what it was and was just creeping a little closer when I saw a truck coming, fearing the bird would fly I took two quick id shots. The bird did fly as the truck passed. I did a quick u-turn and pursued. After quite a bit of looking I spotted it far down in a cow pasture. Had to view through a spotting scope to clearly see it. I returned to our house to pick up Paul and we tried for an hour to re-locate it. While searching for the Scissor-tailed I heard a Bobolinks calling. I turned around and there was a male Bobolink directly behind the car! We drove out 358 for a short distance trying again for the Scissor-tailed and were treated to several Bobolink males displaying. We witnessed courtship flights between males and females. This field used to be planted with alfalfa and cut more than once a season. They have since let it go to natural grass and it is now only cut once a season. This appears to be another breeding location for the county, and they are easier to spot here than at the location on County Road 360! We did finally re-locate the Scissor-tailed...again far down in a cow pasture and had good spotting scope views. Have posted the one decent ID photo to CFO Facebook page. We did file a report with CBRC as Scissor-tailed does not appear on the Huerfano County checklist. I did request it be added, but felt that documentation should be submitted. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Blue Grosbeak, Bobolink and fallout!
We went out to Rouse Road with an out of town birder to try for Hepatic Tanager. Searched and searched but could not find one. We did have quite a few Blue Grosbeaks, Lazuli Buntings. some Western Tanagers, a White-breasted Nuthatch attending it's young, Western Bluebirds and a Golden Eagle! Paul did find a Ladder-backed Woodpecker. We then went out County Road 360 and were able to find at least 4, possibly 6 Bobolinks...all very far away. After yet another cloudy morning and a Spring time squall we decided to head out Valley Road thinking we might find Lark Buntings. We were unable to locate any Lark Buntings, but suddenly found ourselves in the midst of hundreds of birds! There must have been some sort of small fallout going on. On ONE stretch of barbed wire fence approximately 20 ft. long we saw the following: 8 Bullock's Orioles 4 Western Tanagers more than a dozen Lark Sparrows equally as many Chipping Sparrows 6 Western Wood Pewees 5 Western Kingbirds 3 Eastern Kingbirds Barn Swallows Western Meadowlark 6 Blue Grosbeaks One lone male Bobolink singing it's fool head off! Farther along we found Ash-throated Flycatcher Swainson's Hawk Cliff Swallows Yellow Warblers Mountain Bluebirds Savannah Sparrow This appears to be a very good year for Bullock's Orioles. We have more than a dozen coming to our backyard feeders and found 50+ along Valley Road today! We have never seen so many Blue Grosbeaks along one stretch of road. We stopped counting at 35! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Northern Parula!
We decided to brave the quickly deteriorating weather and take a walk up by Daigre Lake Wildlife Area. We had FOS Warbling Vireo and Wilson's Warblers. Yellow-breasted Chats and Common Yellowthroat were calling Violet-green, Tree, and Northern Rough-winged Swallows were about White-crowned and Chipping Sparrows were flitting around A Western Tanager paused by the lake, a Yellow Warbler joined him, briefly, on the same branch! We were beginning to succumb to Yellow-rumped Warbler fatigue when we saw spotted among them a lovely breeding male Northern Parula! He stopped just long enough to give us a crippling views of his broken eyering, yellow lower mandible, yellow throat, black and rufous breast band and rufous along his flanks. Best of all he was at eye level and quite close! Beautiful little bird...if only he had stayed long enough to be photographed! [cobirds] Rio Grande County, Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge - Brant
Buoyed by a forwarded report from the San Luis Valley we ventured over to see if the Brant was still present at Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge. Seldom do we go after a bird and not only am I the first to spot it, but we find it less than 60 seconds after leaving the vehicle! Luck was with us this morning. The bird had relocated to the pond on the East side of the road. Paul had just done a quick perusal with the spotting scope and decided the bird was not present...but I thought one of those geese is smaller than the others...one of those geese is not the same. At the time the bird was on the far side of the pond with a few Canada Geese, head tucked down. As I can be stubborn at times I asked for my turn at the scope and happened to line it up just as the Brant lifted it's head! Pics may be seen on CFO Facebook page. They were taken a bit later when the Brant had come to our side of the pond. While it was still a bit distant, heat shimmer and lighting working against us, we had fantastic scope views and later in the morning were rewarded with a close flyover...as the birds decided to fly to one of the inlets far to the West side of the road. If it had been there to start with we would have never have seen it! Life bird # 3209...Happy Easter for us! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: I Greatly Egret the silly Tern this post has made!
Sorry for the silly title, but just could not help myself! Had a great time with Scooter out at Lathrop State Park this morning. There were: Big rafts of American Coots and Ruddy Ducks A few American Wigeon One Redhead and a few Blue-winged Teal One Green-winged Teal Quite a few Clark's Grebes A Belted Kingfisher being harassed by a Merlin! Still a few Osprey about Lots of Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Bushtits A few Wilson's Warblers Green-tailed and Spotted Towhees Chipping and White-crowned Sparrows Lots of lesser Goldfinches, American Robins and Red-shafted Flickers Loads of Black-billed Magpie and Western Scrub-Jay It is unusual for us to see Great Egret here. We might get one or two a year and they typically pass through in Spring, so it was a very pleasant surprise to 16 in one tree! While counting them a tern flew right into my binocular field of view. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Black Terns and Common Tern
This morning at Lathrop State Park we found two Black Terns and one Common Tern. Have been wondering what all those new huge floats and buoys near the swim beach were good for...now we know...terns LOVE them! Have to admit we puzzled over the Common Tern for some time, it was still in breeding plumage. Red-orange bill with black tip - bill seemed too narrow for Forster's, red-orange legs. When seated tail was definitely shorter than wings. In flight showed dark wedge on primaries. Lots and lots of Wilson's Warblers flying about Common Bushtits were seen 2 Belted Kingfishers at the small wildlife ponds to the west of Horseshoe Lake A great many Western Grebe on Martin Lake Olive-sided Flycatcher was seen Nearer to home we came across a nice small flock of Western Bluebirds Polly Wren and Paul Neldner La Veta, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Red Phalarope
Scooter and I were walking at Wahatoya Lake this morning at around 10:30 am when I noticed a bird over my right shoulder heading toward the lake. The wing pattern was not familiar to me...so put the bins up for a closer look. Was surprised to find a very colorful phalarope with a yellow bill...female Red Phalarope on the last day of July! I must admit I did the spastic Polly dance for a moment trying to decide if I had *really* seen what I thought I saw. Took lots of photos, some of which may be seen on the CFO Facebook page. I did not have my phone with me so could not look it up. Watched the bird for quite a long time as it would make little forays onto shore, sometimes within 10 ft. of me. It was not bothered by the presence of my dog or myself...but I was concerned the folks getting ready to launch their fishing tubes would scare it off. I needn't have worried as the bird was not phased by any of the goings on near her, she was that intent on feeding. Booked it back home and called my husband Paul, luckily he was able to come home and we were both graced with wonderful looks at a life bird almost in our own backyard! She was still there at 1:45 pm. Weather permitting we will head back up this evening... [cobirds] Costilla County: Boreal Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl
We headed over to our cabin in Forbes Park this weekend. Saturday night we heard two Boreal Owls calling. Today we searched all over to try and find them...but were unsuccessful. We did, however find a gorgeous little Northern Saw-whet Owl roosting less than 4 ft. off the ground in a willow thicket! A lifer for both us, photos have been posted to CFO Facebook page. [cobirds] Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge: Leucistic Canada Goose, Sandhills, Greater White-fronted Geese, Ross's and Snow Geese
Please excuse the late report, spent last evening going over all the photos we took yesterday! With the temperature only 17 degrees yesterday we decided to venture forth to Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge in hopes of warmer temps and milder climate. We were not disappointed! It was truly a beautiful day in the San Luis Valley. Would not begin to estimate the number of Sandhills Cranes...they numbered in several thousands. We had heard a report of a leucistic Sandhill, but we did not see one. We did, however, find a very dark youngster, much darker than any of the others in the area. Amongst the thousands and thousands of Canada Geese, there was one that had the head and neck of a normal Canada with an all white body and wings and a dark tail. There would numerous Snow Geese and one lone Ross's Goose. There were lots of Mallards and a couple of Northern Pintails. Perhaps the biggest surprise were the 6 Greater White-fronted Geese mixed in! Numerous Rough-legged Hawks, a pair of Red-tailed Hawks, one Bald Eagle and a gorgeous Prairie Falcon were it for the raptors. Forgive me for straying from the birds, but the best sighting of the day was a Porcupine resting in a tree. Have never had the pleasure of observing one so close, ALIVE, and for so long! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Common Loon, Greater Scaup, Common Goldeneye
It was truly a beautiful, warm, non-windy morning in Huerfano County. Out at Lathrop there was quite a assortment of waterfowl. Calm water made for very good scoping. Was quite pleasantly surprised to find 6 Common Loon on the lake. Had them all up at the same time...that was a nice treat. First of the season female Greater Scaup together with a small group of Common Goldeneye in amongst the more usual suspects of Common Merganser, American Wigeon, Redheads, Ring-necked Duck, Bufflehead, Mallard a few Canvasback. Large rafts of Clark's and Western Grebe with more than a few Pied-billed Grebe, Horned and Eared Grebe. No unusual gulls... The Bald Eagles have returned to the lake and the Osprey are gone. Nice group of Bushtit. Lovely flyover of Sandhill Crane. Of course there were lots of Northern Flicker, American Goldfinch, American Tree Sparrow, and White-crowned Sparrow. Quite a few Western Scrub-Jay, American Crow, Common Raven and Black-billed Magpie. Best of all...my trusty pup Scooter and I were the only ones out there! [cobirds] Fremont County: Green Heron, Tricolored Heron, Least Bittern
Paul and I decided to travel up to Fremont County with our trusty dog, Scooter, for a great morning of birding. On the drive up we saw a Peregrine Falcon along Hwy 50. At Holcim Wetlands we watched a Green Heron flying across the pond. We, and several other birders, searched for the Tricolored Heron for quite awhile. One group left and Paul and I were just getting ready to call it a day when the Tricolored Heron flew in and landed! It gave us, SeEtta Moss and two other birders great views. The Tricolored was a new Colorado bird for us. As the morning was quite warm I decided to walk back to the car to get Scooter and myself a drink of cool water. We had just reached the car when Paul came running toward me calling Least Bittern flew in! At first I had a bit of difficulty locating the bird. SeEtta had her camera mounted on a tripod and I was able to locate it with that. Once located all 5 of us were able to observe the Least Bittern for more than 30 minutes. A lovely and quite cooperative bittern indeed! As my only other look at a Least Bittern was for around 3 seconds a couple of years ago...this was essentially a lifer for both of us. It was great running into birding friends, meeting some new people and some we had previously only corresponded with via e-mail. Easy to tell from all the Western females...no wing bars, duskier than female Westerns... raised her crest, slightly larger bill. Hoping to get photosYard bird #145! First of the season Warbling Vireo at Larhrop State Park Snowy Egret and American Avocets still present at Lathrop Bobolinks have returned to County Road 360 - 4 gorgeous males spotted this afternoon Lots of Evening Grosbeaks at the feeders throughout the day...but never in the eveningh... [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: A few good birds
Seen at Lathrop State Park this morning: Green Heron at the Wetlands pond Black-crowned Night-Heron near North Martin Inlet Snowy Egret and American Avocets at the small ponds behind Horseshoe Reservoir Also seen: a group of 12 small sandpipers in flight...bills appeared dark with streaked sides and bright white rumps...fairly long wings...tails appeared dark...best suspect appears to be White-rumped Sandpiper, but Sibely's would suggest this is highly unlikely. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Broad-winged Hawks, Northern Goshawk
Was not able to post yesterday as the internet was down all day and into the wee hours of this morning. On Saturday afternoon we saw a mature Northern Goshawk flying at Spanish Peaks Wilderness Area Through this morning we have added first of the season Western Kingbird, Loggerhead Shrike, Western Wood-Peewee, Lazuli Bunting, Bullock's Oriole, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Black-chinned and Broad-tailed Hummningbird, Tennessee Warbler (finally a different warbler) and copulating Mountain Bluebirds...they have no shame...right out there on the power line! It would appear we have broken our drought on both Virginia's Warbler and Broad-winged Hawks for Huerfano County. Saw our first of each on Rouse Road on Sunday...saw two more Virginia's Warblers at Lathrop State Park this morning! Now am just hoping for major snow to break the real drought! Is it a particularly good year for Broad-winged Hawks in Colorado? Had never see one before this year and now have two in three days in Huerfano County...now if one would just come to my backyard... There are so many Evening Grosbeaks in the yard right now...it feels like an invasion. It has been a very nice birding weekend here in Huerfano County. Yesterday we found: Black Phoebe and lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets were flycatching at Lathrop State Park Today we found: Cattle Egret at La Veta Town Lakes...the only other one we have ever seen in Huerfano County was 9 years ago! [cobirds] HHuerfano County Update: After the storm - Pinyon Jays, Harris's Sparrow, American Pipit, Hermit Thrush
It was a chilly, calm day after the storm today in Huerfano County. With 12-15 inches of fresh snow on the ground decided it would be a great day to bird. Went to Wahatoya/Daigre Lakes, Lathrop State Park then ended up at La Veta Town Lakes. There were a few shorebirds, several large mixed flocks of sparrows it was quite a lively day. [cobirds] RE: Huerfano County Update - Migration
We decided to brave the howling winds and go out to Lathrop State Park. As it was so windy, we did not expect much, as it turned out we were more than pleasantly surprised. At Horseshoe we found: 15 Great Blue Herons 60-65 Franklin's Gulls 2 American White Pelicans 45-50 Double-crested Cormorants Perhaps the biggest surprise was the flock of around 12-15 Northern Rough-winged Swallows! Sharp-shinned Hawk The Osprey have returned big time...between both lakes there were over 20 seen! At Martin Lake there were: 35-40 Clark's and Western Grebes A nice flock of Bustits 12-15 Ruby-crowned Kinglets were a very pleasant surprise! 5 Yellow-rumped Warblers Here at home: 25-30 Evening Grosbeaks 10 Cassin's Finches 1 Song Sparrow 6 White-crowned Sparrows 2 transitioning Harris's Sparrows 40+ transitioning American Goldfinches 2 White-breasted Nuthatches 2 Downy Woodpeckers 2 Hairy Woodpeckers Lewis's Woodpecker was seen briefly 1 Cooper's Hawk 15-20 Pine Siskins Yesterday we had a Great Egret resting in the trees down by Wahatoya Creek! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Pinyon Jays, Lewis's Woodpecker, Harris's Sparrow
Our feeders have been exceptionally busy the last few days with as many at 50-60 Pinyon Jays coming in - especially in the morning A pair of Lewis's Woodpeckers has been in the neighborhood for some time...but yesterday one started coming to our backyard feeders! It is one of the first birds here in the morning and the last to leave in the evening. It will defend both the suet and bird seed block, will grab a sunflower seed from our large feeder and retreat to the power pole just across the street. This is only the second time we have had Lewis's visit the feeders. We still have two Harris's Sparrows coming in on a daily basis 25-30 Evening Grosbeaks visit intermittently throughout the day 50-60 Pine Siskins 3 Spotted Towhees 20 or so American Goldfinches 6 or so Black-capped Chickadees 7 Blue Jays 4 Stellar's Jays 2 Hairy Woodpeckers 2 Downy Woodpeckers 2 White-breasted Nuthatches 30 or so Dark-eyed Juncos with one being a lovely White-winged. and a couple of White-crowned Sparrows Good birding! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Northern Pygmy-Owl
This morning while walking around Martin Lake at Lathrop State Park...Paul spotted a Northern Pygmy-Owl right next to the walking path...practically at eye level. Of course neither of us had our cameras. We watched for quite awhile at very close range...less than 15 ft. from us and not at all bothered by our presence or that of our dog. We eventually continued on our way...kicking ourselves for not having the cameras with us. When we returned to the same spot more than 40 minutes later the owl was still there! We watched it for awhile and even had the opportunity to show it to a couple of walkers...who had no idea such a tiny owl even existed. We then looked at each other and said What do we have to lose...piled in the car, returned to La Veta, grabbed our camera equipment and sped back to the lake. The Northern Pygmy-Owl was still there! It had only moved to the next tree over...still low and close to the trail! We did get our best photos ever of this diminutive predator! It stayed for another 15 minutes or so and finally flew off. The interesting thing is...this experience is almost identical to the only other time we have been fortunate enough to see Northern Pygmy-Owl in Huerfano County. Great looks, no cameras, raced home, returned, took photos and watched for another 20 minutes! [cobirds] Huerfano County update: Western Bluebirds
The first morning of the New Year was quite cold here in Huerfano County. We decided to walk our dog, Scooter, around Martin Lake at Lathrop State Park in spite of the chilly temperature. Hundreds of American Robins and dozens of Townsend's Solitaire's were flying about Close to 100 Mountain Bluebirds and 15-20 Western Bluebirds were seen A tree full of Evening Grosbeaks with 2 Cedar Waxwings was found at Horseshoe Res. Cannot remember when we have seen Evening Grosbeaks at Lathrop before today. A Lone Bald Eagle was seen 2 Great Blue Herons Many Dark-eyed Juncos were fluttering about Perhaps the most unusual sighting, for us, was of a Great Horned Owl being persistently pestered by an adult Cooper's Hawk. We first spotted the owl and I was sneaking through the brush for a photo op, when the Cooper's Hawk lit on the same branch about 10 feet from the owl and began calling and calling. It succeeded in driving the owl from it's roost and chased it to a nearby tree, where it continued it's non-stop scolding. The Cooper's Hawk finally departed leaving behind a very disgruntled looking Great Horned Owl. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: 9 Tundra Swans, Harris's Sparrows
Just watched 9 Tundra Swans take flight at Martin Lake at Lathrop State Park. 8 adults and 1 juvenile. Heard and seen quite well. [cobirds] Huerfano County update: Pacific Loon persists, good year for Harris's Sparrows
We had 4 Spotted Towhees at the feeder this morning along with 25-30 Evening Grosbeaks, a White-throated Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrows and our Harris's Sparrows. While we quite often will have a single Harris's Sparrow come in occasionally, with 3 consistently in the yard and another 2 being spotted at Wahatoya Lake it would appear to be a good year for them here in Huerfano County. The Pacific Loon is still at Lathrop State Park, Martin Lake. Polly Wren Neldner La Veta, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Huerfano County update: Harris's Sparrows, White-throated Sparrow, Lewis's Woodpeckers, Pacific Loon
It was brisk 18 degrees here in La Veta this morning. While having our morning coffee and nursing our Thanksgiving food hangovers while watching our feeders we saw: 3 Harris's Sparrows 1 White-throated Sparrow 2 Lewis's Woodpeckers (we have been seeing them quite frequently close to the yard, so we are hoping they will stay for awhile) 25-30 Evening Grosbeaksd After our Turkey Day gluttony we decided it was time to get out of the house! Our first stop was Daigre Lake where we found an American Pipit...seems a little late for this species to still be here! Next it was off to Lathrop State Park where we saw: A Northern Mockingbird - again seems a little late in the year for these Merlin (finally managed to get a decent shot of this bird) A Northern Shrike We did re-locate the Pacific Loon we first reported on 11/15 after a bit of searching. While before it tended to stay all by itself and close to shore, today it was mixed in with the Common Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, assorted grebes and Ring-billed Gulls way out in the middle of Martin Lake. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Pacific and Common Loon - no Kittiwakes
Went out to Lathrop State Park to search for Black-legged Kittiwakesdid not find those...just two Bonaparte's Gulls mixed in with all the Ring-billed Gulls. One was at Martin Lake, the other was at Horseshoe. Re-located the Pacific Loon...in almost the exact same spot as yesterday. 2 Common Loons were seen Polly Wren Neldner La Veta, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Pacific Loon
A lone juvenile Pacific Loon kept me glued to Martin Lake at Lathrop State Park for most of the morning. All of my previous experience with this species has been non-breeding adult plumage. I kept following it around the lake lugging my spotting scope with me, checking and re-checking the descriptions, illustrations and range map in Sibley's. Finally called my husband, who was on his way to Walsenburg, and persuaded him to take a detour. With both of us checking we still could not come to a definitive conclusion. We had quickly eliminated Common, Red-throated and Yellow-billed, which left us with Pacific or Arctic. While both of us have seen Pacific Loon (including one at Lathrop State Park in 2008) neither of us has experience with Arctic. The loon appeared to have a flatish crown and a white patch on the flank...however neither seemed pronounced enough for Arctic...which, judging from the range maps, would have been a great stretch. Upon arrival at home, and review of my photos, was still undecided, so posted some to Cobirds Facebook page, my Facebook page and sent some to friends over e-mail, and finally, I compared my shots today with our shots of the Pacific Loon we had seen in 2008. The conclusion was probably foregone: Pacific Loon. I did not see the Black-legged Kittiwake, but my attention was on the loon. I will head back out to Lathrop in the morning and pay closer attention to the gulls! [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Juvenile Thayer's Gull
Left La Veta behind this morning...headed to Montana to visit with our oldest daughter...but could not resist the temptation for a quick stop at Lathrop State Park. I say quick as we ended up staying for over an hour trying to get the best vantage point for an odd looking juvenile gull...that kept swimming directly away from us. Had a very streaked backside and seemed to set in the water with it's back slightly higher than it's head. Brownish overall with dark brown primaries which appeared to be edged a little paler. It was larger than the Ring-billed Gulls that were swimming by and in front of it. When the bird would turn briefly to the side we noticed all dark bill, slighly paler behind the bill and distinct marking on back and flanks. This set us scrambling for the Sibley's. While one of us kept the bird in the scope the other took turns flipping through Sibley's to eliminate suspects. Too dark for Glaucous, much more distinctly marked on back and sides lacked pink on the bill. Glaucous primaries would be white. Glaucous-winged would have primaries the same color as the body, lack that distinctive marking on back and flanks. Mew would probably appear to be the same size as the Ring-billeds lacks pale edging on primaries. Our conclusion was juvenile Thayer's Gull. New Huerfano County bird for us. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Brown Thrasher
At Lathrop State Park, I found a Brown Thrasher, in amongst a batch of American Robins, young Cedar Waxwings and Yellow-rumped Warblers. This is the first I have seen of this species in Huerfano County. Would be interested if anyone else has seen them here. Checked the Huerfano County checklist and they are not listed...but then, the checklist could be out of date. I was unable to get photos. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Tennessee Warber, Sabine's Gulls
It was glorious Fall day here in Huerfano County. Our yard has had many (up to 20) Wilson's Warblers for the past week. Today a lone first year Tennessee Warbler joined them. An early evening walk at Lathrop State Park was pretty quiet, but 2 Sabine's Gulls at Martin Lake made it very worthwhile. A very obnoxious boater accidentally did us a good turn by spooking them out of the water and giving us good clear looks of the striking pied wing pattern, and black tail. We had a lone Sabine's Gull at Lathrop on 9/12/2010. Alas, the Caspian Tern was a no show. [cobirds] Huerfano County update: Two Greater Roadrunners!
While Martin Lake was very quiet, bird wise, this morning, a drive around Martin Lake provided great distant views of two Greater Roadrunners! We typically see A Greater Roadrunner *maybe* twice a year, if we are lucky. To see these two chasing each other around at the far West end of Horseshoe Lake was a real treat! Was able to watch them, at a distance, for around 5 minutes. Good fun! [cobirds] Pueblo County: Very Large Female Hummingbird, Brown Thrasher
Drove back up to my sister's place between Colorado City and Beulah for the third day in a row. Met another birder on the way. We both thought the bird visiting her feeder was a female Magnificent. The habitat around my sisters place is perfect for this bird. I still stand behind my instincts that we did see a Mag...but due to controversy over the photos I posted to CFO Facebook page (some, I admit, were wrong) I have deleted that album and have posted one on my Facebook page with the title Very Large Female Hummingbird. Just mocking myself here. Just a reminder this private property. No public access. . There was also a Brown Thrasher in her yard. A little high in elevation for that species...but then...as we all know...birds do not read the field guides. [cobirds] Pueblo County: Female Magnificent Hummingbird
Drove back up to my sister's home, about halfway between Colorado City and Beulah to try to get photos of female Magnificent Hummingbird. We did manage some pretty good ID photos. This is very private property...sits far back from the road. Photos can be seen at CFO Facebook Page at the following link: Female Magnificent Hummingbirdhttp://www.facebook.com/groups/129995222037/ Polly Wren and Paul Neldner La Veta, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
