Dunno. I can only get it to work on Vista if I run it as Administrator.
Maybe UAC in Windows 7 differs somehow from UAC in Vista?

Re: Another typing kills my xterm post...

2009-01-28 Thread Scott Fordin

Here's a copy of a post I sent previously about Solaris and X server
issues. Could be useful in this context.

-- Snip --

You know, as it so happens, I've been tracking down a solution to a
similar problem I just started experiencing today. In my case though,
I just upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10, and I'm trying to connect
to a Solaris 10 box. I can connect, and certain applications work
just fine, but a couple (in particular running a Java app withing
Firefox 2.x), as soon as a type anything in a form field, Firefox
crashes hard with XKEYBOARD resource errors. Based on what I've
found today, the problem looks like it might be an X configuration
error on the Solaris side, and it relates to Xorg versioning issues.
Specifically, my Solaris 10 installation is using older versions
of Xorg-related files; the new version of Ubunutu and, I gather, of
the Cygwin/X server use new Xorg files.

I'm in the process of applying a bunch of update patches to my
Solaris box. In particular, patch 119059-45 was identified on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/292973. We'll
see if it works.

Anyway, don't know if this might be any help to you.

Hope this helps,

various fixes proposed in this an other posting areas don't work. I have
followed everything in the FAQ to the letter to no avail.

- I blew away my entire installation and reinstalled from scratch, so there
are no stray startxwin.bat files around

- I tried starting from the Start menu - Cygwin/X, from startxwin.bat, etc

- I patched the Solaris system I am touching but it didn't fix anything.

I can get an xterm to come up and it types just fine. But when I bring my
app up, typing kills the window resulting in a core dump on the Solaris
server.

There is nothing of note in any local logs (on my laptop). No errors, no
nothing.

I do get a core file on the Solaris system, but I can't tell if anything in
it tells me anything.

I understand that this is an ongoing problem, but is there anything I have
missed?

If you add -once to the command used to launch the server, does it exit after

Cygwin and Emacs on Vista

2008-09-03 Thread Scott Fordin

Hi,

I can't get Emacs to work on Cygwin on Vista. Xemacs works
just fine, but Emacs doesn't. When I try to launch Emacs in
GUI mode from an xterm, the shell just hangs. When I try to
launch it in console mode from a non-X bash shell, the shell
just hangs. Again, Xemacs works; it's only Emacs that doesn't
work. Running emacs-nox doesn't help. I've also tried using
the -d and -nw options, but no joy.

I'm running Cygwin on Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, as
follows:

   $ uname -a
   CYGWIN_NT-6.0 balance 1.5.25(0.156/4/2) 2008-04-17 12:11 i686 Cygwin

The version of Emacs I'm using is one that came with the
Cygwin distribution, and is version 21.2.1.

I've had no problem using the same Cygwin and Emacs distros
on XP Pro. The problem seems to be only on Vista. Stupid
Vista...

I've googled it to no avail. Any clues?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Re: Windows Vista

2008-08-25 Thread Scott Fordin
Cygwin does indeed run on 32-bit versions of Windows Vista.
Don't know about 64-bit versions. In my experience, there
are a few catches to getting Cygwin to work on Vista:

   1. Run the Cygwin setup as Administrator and in XP
  Compatibility Mode.

   2. I had better luck when I did the install in two
stages: First, I just downloaded the packages, then
I ran setup again and chose the install from local
  repository option.

   3. After installation, run Cygwin's rebaseall command
from an ash (not bash) shell.

   4. When you finally run the Cygwin bash shell for real,
be sure to use Vista's Run as Administrator option.

   5. Also make sure that your firewall is not blocking
  Xwin.exe or bash.exe.

FWIW, the Xming X server works just fine on Vista, and you
can use Xming as your X Server when running PuTTY or many if
not all of the Cygwin X-based apps.

Hope this helps,

Scott

Re: Need help

2008-08-21 Thread Scott Fordin

Hi, Shahed,

You need to use xhost in the Windows xterm to enable remote
clients (in this case, the Solaris box) to connect to the
Cygwin X server. You may also need to enable localhost to
connect as well. Specifically:

xhost +solaris_ip
xhost +localhost

You could also just do an xhost +, but that opens up your
display to everyone, so I don't recommend it. You also need
to make sure that X forwarding is enabled on the Windows
side. There are a number of different ways to do this, but
here's what I do to export the display of a Solaris app to
a Windows machine:

   1. (Windows) Open a Cygwin bash shell.

   2. (Windows) Start the Cygwin X server and an xterm
  with the startx command.

   3. (Windows) Allow connections to the Cygwin X server
with the xhost command, as described above.

   4. (Windows) Connect to the Solaris machine with

 ssh -X solaris_machine -l solaris_user_name

   4. (Solaris) (optional) You shouldn't have to do this
because you used -X with ssh, but depending on the
Solaris app you're trying to display on your Windows
system, you may need to explicitly export the Solaris
display; for example, if you're using a C shell:

 setenv DISPLAY windows_machine:0.0

   5. (Solaris) Launch your app through the ssh connection,
and it should display on the Windows machine.

Hope this helps,

Scott

Have you tried starting Cygwin using Vista's Run as Administrator
option? I've found that Cygwin and Vista don't get along at all
unless you run the bash shell explicitly as Administrator.

Also, your message indicates that you're starting XWin directly
from bash, rather than using the startx script. FWIW, I find it
more generally useful to use startx.

Hope this helps,

Eh? I just installed on Vista yesterday and all I had to do was click
on setup.exe. Vista asked to run it as administrator since the
executable is named setup.exe. I didn't have to do anything special.

Dunno. It was the only I way I could get it to work, and I was
following advice I read elsewhere. In any case, it did work when
I ran it as Administrator. Are there any downsides to doing it
this way?

No. The error you got is unlikely to be as a result of Vista. Try a
different mirror.

Also make sure that you run the Cygwin setup as Administrator. This
doesn't just mean that your user account has Administrator rights;
you have to right-click the Cygwin setup.exe and then choose Run
as Administrator from the pop-up menu.

FWIW, I have both Cygwin and Xming on my Vista notebook. I use Cygwin
when I need a real shell environment on my Vista machine. I use Xming
and PuTTY when I just need an X server and an ssh session on a remote
Solaris or Linux box. Both work great!

Hope this helps,

Unfortunately I get errors like can't open display. Does anybody

Your guess is right. You have to start a local X11 server (startx).
And set DISPLAY before you start ssh. Also remember that some
applications need ssh -Y.

You also may need to use xhost to add the remote machine to
the access control list on your local machine; for example,
in your Cygwin shell:

   /usr/X11R6/bin/xhost +linux_machine_name

Some applications also don't seem to work with ssh -X or
ssh -Y. For those apps, you may need to explicitly export
the remote machine display to your local machine; for
example, from your Linux box:

   export DISPLAY=cygwin_machine_name:0.0

Hi All,

I'm running Cygwin X on a Dell/Windows XP to get a full Xsession on a
Solaris box and occasionally my X clipboard fails to work between X and
MS Windows. It takes quite some time (weeks) for it to happen. The MS
Windows clipboard continues to work withen itself and the X clipboard
continues to work withen itself (other X Windows) but they don't work
with each other. Once it fails I need to restart the X Server in it's
entirety to get X clipboard and MS Windows clipboard to talk to each
other.

I use ClipMate from Thornsoft Development (http://www.thornsoft.com).
It does cost money, but it is totally worth it, IMHO. It works very
well with Cygwin, and in any case, on the rare occasions that I've
lost the connection between ClipMate and some other app, ClipMate's
Re-Establish Clipboard Connection command restores the connection
without any problems and without having to close the app to which
you're trying to connect.

I installed this Cygwin about 8 months ago from one of the Cygwin setup
mirror sites.

I am using the -clipboard option to XWin:

XWin -nodecoration -emulate3buttons -clipboard -silent-dup-error
-query my_solaris_box

Is there a way that I can recover clipboad functionality between X and
MS Windows WITHOUT RESTART of entire X Server?

Also, I really don't want to take the time to do an entire Cygwin
re-installation now, but would like to know if there is a quick simple
fix..

I appreciate your advice.

Very strange, the differences you sent don't show an invalid script
at all. One of the 2 files has \r\n endings (that's the reason for
the first 2 differences) but as long as they are being executed by
command.com it doesn't matter.

Thanks again, René. I found the solution to the startxserver.bat
problem! Using one of your clues, I discovered that the Singular
post-install script did not update my PATH correctly. I fixed the
PATH to c:\cygwin\bin and c:\cygwin\X11R6\bin, and lo, the X
startup script worked.

You can create a shortcut to startx.sh and then edit its Properties
so the target ends up like: C:\cygwin\bin\run.exe -p /usr/X11R6/bin/
bash --login -c startx
[Ref:http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.os.cygwin.xfree/16545]

Excellent. This is just what I was looking for.

I use a shortcut to start X Windows only (no xterm):

C:\cygwin\bin\run.exe -p /usr/X11R6/bin XWin -multiwindow -clipboard
-silent-dup-error -dpi 100

Very nice. Thanks again René. I really appreciate your thoughtful
responses and the way you stuck with the problem.

Best regards,

Scott

OK, it seems that the startxserver is not even a valid script (I
haven't tested, I don't have Singular, I'm saying that from the
result you had).

Strange thing though is that it does work on another machine.

Question: Why were you trying to start XWin with that bat file? I
don't know what it is for, but seems redundant.

Well, the way things install, a Start X Server shortcut is
installed on the desktop. It's more handy than opening a bash
shell and then running startx from there. I've tried configuring
a similar shortcut for startx, but I can't get it to work. Since
startxwin.bat fails with the same error as startxserver.bat, I
can't just use that on the desktop instead. I don't have a
standalone version of Perl installed, so I can't run the .sh
version of the script. I don't know how else to do it. I looked,
but I didn't find an answer, but do you know of a way I can pass
a shell command to bash.exe from the Windows command prompt?

I then tried the /usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.bat script and got
the same error.

[snip]

Now to the real problem: are the files different?

There are differences, but none seems significant vis a vis
this particular problem. I've attached the diff output. I
can't even figure out where the lapack libraries are being
called...

They should be. There is no reference to the Singular directory in
the normal startxwin.bat file... check for symbolic or hard links,
perhaps Singular's (post)installation is doing something wrong.

I see no other explanation for getting the same error message.

Thanks again,

Scott

Dunno. I ran the latest official Cygwin setup.exe, and chose to
install *all* the packages at one of the mirrors listed in the
install window:

ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/sources.redhat.com/cygwin

The Singular stuff came with that.

You seem to have installed something else on top of Cygwin.

Nope. Just the stuff that came through the Cygwin install.

- Snip -
'C:\cygwin\lib\lapack' is not recognized as an internal or external
command, operable program or batch file.
- Snip -

So? That means the above .bat file is trying to execute something
else that also doesn't come with Cygwin... and is not even an
executable.

Again. Dunno. It's what came with the distro.

I then tried the /usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.bat script and got the
same error.

If you received the same error message then something, not Cygwin,
messed up your installation. Same error probably means you executed
the same file, are they really named startxserver.bat and
startxwin.bat, or is just a typo?

Nope. Two different files. startxserver.bat came with the
Singular stuff. startxwin.bat is the standard batch file
included with Cygwin in /usr/X11R6/bin.

Again, the two things to remember here are that startxwin.sh
works just fine, and this exact same distro -- Singular stuff
included -- works just fine on my XP machine. Moreover, before
I rebuilt this Win2K box, this distribution worked just fine
as well.

I've tried totally removing and reinstalling Cygwin a couple of
times already.

Did you check what was left on the above directory? If Cygwin did
not install whatever is there it will not delete it.

I completely deleted the Cygwin directories, which included
the Singular stuff.

Thanks again,

Scott
