Bug#182605: [Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#182605: Is #182605 really belonging to passwd?
As a consequence, my first reaction is saying that this bug does not pertain to passws. Am I right? Yes, unless there's a bug in passwd inside #ifndef USE_PAM code too. ;) Well, given that Debian's passwd uses PAM, the bug would then become a bug in upstream passwd but not in Debian implementation..:-) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. My first question is how to add users to OpenLDAP comfortably (as with e.g. Debian's adduser tool) -- I don't want to _migrate_ all users from passwd/shadow to LDAP using padl. I merely want to have LDAP _parallel_ with files and NIS database. Well, it is an experimental package, it was buggy, this is fixed in SVN and will be solved for the next upload, and we have grander plans for this, which are currently being implemented. b) It does indeed work, except for USB, it boots, it loads modules. c) If I tinker with boot options ( irqpoll noapic lapic), I even get USB to work d) # apt-get install initramfs-tools Reading package lists... The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: initramfs-tools: Depends: busybox-cvs-static (= 20040623-1) but it is not installable Oh well, try yaird then, i hesitated in proposing this one, but i guess it is a good idea, since initramfs-tools is currently broken. Good argument for separate implementations, but note that for the universal boot image, both mkinitramfs and yaird need to come up with an initscript that does udev and then mdadm, lvm and what have you. For this use case, the only difference is whether the cpio file is written by a perl script or by a shell script; all the intelligence is at boot time, not at build time. This makes the difference between the two approaches too small to be of much interest to Debian. For yaird, on the other hand, adding an udev-based template would make it a much more complete package. Well, which is exactly the kind of task the debian-installer does, so it is only natural to reuse that code for ramdisk regeneration and other kind of repairs :) Friendly, Sven Luther -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#334186: Nice is not used; processes slow down system
Package: tiger Version: 1:3.2.1-28 Severity: minor Tiger's cron scripts don't run with a nice value, so they run at normal priority. This can cause the system to really slow down, especially when checking md5sums. It would seem simple to put an entry in the config file where you could set the desired nice value, and use that in the scripts that get run. It took me several minutes to figure out what was causing so much disk and CPU activity on my system. Bug#239134: PATCH: jpeg and ppm support for xjig
Nathanael Nerode writes the following: The GIF patent means that tools for turning things *into* gifs are pretty damn hard to find on a Debian system. I don't believe it's true that GIFs are hard to make (djpeg, ppmtogif, etc.). They're just not compressed. But the point is valid anyway. xjig should support more image formats, so you don't have to make intermediate gifs. So how about supporting PNG, which isn't that different, but which is much easier to convert to on Debian systems? :-) I've made a patch which implements JPEG and PPM support. Because it was originally designed to work exclusively with GIFs, xjig uses an internal image representation based on a 256-color palette. I haven't yet attempted to change that internal representation, so JPEGs and PPMs are quantized down to 256 colors. Thanks to libjpeg, quantized JPEGs look good. Quantized PPMs look horrible, because libnetpbm doesn't include a quantize routine. I just crammed the colors into 8 bits by using 3 bits red, 3 bits green, 2 bits blue. No PNG yet. libpng's documentation is frightening. (And I don't see any quantize routine in there either.) The patch is kind of big for a mail message, so find it at http://world.std.com/~pacman/xjig-beyondgif.diff The size of the patch includes a lot of chunks that were moved from one file to another, and a couple of files that were renamed, and some data types renamed, all of which reflects the fact that there is now a generic format-independent layer where previously there was just one image loader which was partly GIF-dependent and partly format-independent. The amount of new code is actually small. This patch contains a couple of unrelated build fixes in the Imakefile and Makefile.Linux. I couldn't get the build to work without these. Diffed against Debian's version 2.4-8 (what I currently get with apt-get source xjig), but it also applies to and works with the 2.4 orig.tar.gz. I have not made any adjustments to the debian/* files. It will at least need some new Build-Depends (libnetpbm-dev and libjpeg-dev). Is there any active upstream maintainer for xjig? I'm going to be optimistic and Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] whose address is in the source (next to some 9-year-old timestamps). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#334192: mutt-ng: perhaps use alternatives with mutt?
Package: mutt-ng Version: 0.0+20050916-1 Severity: wishlist Hi there. I saw that muttng is already in the experimental repository of Debian proper and decided to try it. My first impression on it is that it is a quite good improvement upon mutt (e.g., the name of the variables are more consistent etc). Unfortunately, some tools (like reportbug, when invoked with -M) call mutt directly and it would be nice for the system administrators that installed muttng to be able to choose what to use via the update-alternatives infra structure provided by Debian. I would be very grateful if it were possible to use this scheme, so that I would use muttng in more situations. BTW, I do see one minor problem with the naming of muttng: I see the names mutt-ng and muttng being used without consistency in both the sites, documentation, command line interface (the name of the executable) etc. It would be nice to have a consistent naming. Bug#334010: net-snmp: NMU for openssl 0.9.8 transition will be uploaded for a 2-day NMU
Henrique, Why are you telling maintainers that you are going to NMU for the openssl transition? Such NMUs have not been discussed with either the release team or the QA team, and they would be disruptive of the release team's efforts to complete the C++ ABI transition for KDE and related libraries -- of which there are about a dozen tied in that do *not* come from KDE, and net-snmp is one of them. The openssl transition is not a priority compared to the C++ ABI transition, and uploads like the net-snmp 5.2.1.2-4 upload that your bug prompted will delay the C++ transition without helping the openssl transition. (net-snmp will have to be rebuilt anyway once libssl0.9.8 provides versioned symbols.) Please refrain from bug reports or NMUs for the openssl transition without first discussing the specific case with the release team. Jochen, if you weren't already aware, the libsnmp9 transition is tangled up with the KDE transition because php4 and php5 depend on both; so if you could also hold off on further net-snmp uploads except for RC bugfixes until libsnmp9 makes it into testing, that would also be appreciated. Bug#309411: rpm does not create /var/lib/rpm
reopen 309411 thanks, mate Hi Sam, Thanks for the additional information you provided below. I can see how /var/lib/rpm not being present affects rpmstrap from working. From a brief glance it that looks like rpm, incorrectly, wanting /var/lib/rpm to exist even though an different root has been specified. To me the correct solution will be to modify rpm to not care about the existance of /var/lib/rpm on the host when --root is specified. Until I've made that change, I've reopened this bug. Regards, Anand On Fri, Oct 14, 2005 at 01:05:50PM -0500, Sam Hart wrote: Previously, Anand Kumria [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Bayle, I'm not sure why not no one else has responded to you. It is specifically documented in /usr/share/doc/rpm/README.Debian why /var/lib/rpm is not created. This is because you should not use rpm to install packages on a Debian system; ideally you will convert the .rpm, via alien, to a .deb and install it with dpkg. Those who wish to use both dpkg and rpm as package managers on their system (keeping in mind that neither will know about the other) will know enough to manually create the directory and initialise the database. As I regard this as a usage error, I am closing this bugreport. I think you may be closing this bugreport prematurely. This problem additionally impacts people who are using Debian-based systems to maintain RPM-based chroots or bootstraps as well. As a very real world example of this problem. Previously many people have been using Xen and rpmstrap (http://rpmstrap.pimpscript.net/) to provide virtual CentOS machines to their VPS users. Often people will manage multiple Xen virtual systems on a Debian base. So, even though these people are not using rpm to install packages intermingled with their dpkg-controlled packages on their Debian system, they are still being affected by this error. Perhaps it should be something that is configurable at installation of this newer version of RPM? -- `When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know, the end result is tyranny and oppression no matter how holy the motives' -- Robert A Heinlein, If this goes on -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#334192: mutt-ng: perhaps use alternatives with mutt?
Hi, * Rogério Brito [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2005-10-16 11:21]: Package: mutt-ng Version: 0.0+20050916-1 Severity: wishlist Hi there. Yes, I totally agree. But why is this a bug against mutt-ng? Bug#334192: mutt-ng: perhaps use alternatives with mutt?
On Sun, 16 Oct 2005 the mental interface of Rogério Brito told: Package: mutt-ng Version: 0.0+20050916-1 Severity: wishlist Hi there. See Bug#334171 I would be very grateful if it were possible to use this scheme, so that I would use muttng in more situations. BTW, I do see one minor problem with the naming of muttng: I see the names mutt-ng and muttng being used without consistency in both the sites, documentation, command line interface (the name of the executable) etc. The name is mutt-ng, created by ak. libc6 doesn#t accept binaries including a '-'-character in zs name so it is muttng. It would be nice to have a consistent naming. Not possible Please don't send bugs twice. Elimar -- Do you smell something burning or ist it me? pgp4Vk95squIb.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#334171: mutt-ng: perhaps use alternatives with mutt?
On Sat, 15 Oct 2005 the mental interface of Rogério Brito told: Package: mutt-ng Version: 0.0+20050916-1 Severity: wishlist Hi there. I am right now playing with mutt-ng directly taken from experimental and it does seem more sensible (at least with the naming of the variables) than mutt. I would, therefore, like to use it in preference of mutt, even if I have mutt installed. Unfortunately, some programs already use mutt as a hardcoded value (for instance, this very same bugreport tool that I am using right now, when invoked with the -M option). echo mua 'muttng -H' ~/.reportbugrc So, would it be possible to provide a way (say, via alternatives) so that the system administrator could choose which version to give preference? No, mutt-ng is bleeding edge and isn't an altrnative yet. I think that using alternatives would be quite painless to implement and I can send a patch if desired. Oh, BTW, it seems to be mature enough to warrant a first upload to unstable (so that it can move to testing, where more people would use it). No, mutt-ng is bleeding edge and isn't stable enough yet. Bug#334164: yada: Touches debian/control, first paragraph, modifies Build-Depends on the fly
severity 334164 normal thanks yada rebuilds the debian/control file when it is run, *AND* it goes and *modifies* data in the first paragraph of it. This is *really* broken and should never be done, except by the maintainer itself. The reason is simple: If its done automagically and noone checks it, it can produce results which may break later, for example in security updates. If the security update is prapared with sane environment (in sarge system), there is no possibility to break the debian/control's Build-Dependencies. Please, tell me, how yada can break the package? I'm using this tool for years and it happened *never*. In fact, the Build-Depends are changed only for yada itself. If security update is prepared with wrong tool, the result will be also wrong. If updated is prepared with the proper environment, the result will be OK. My example - the phpmyadmin 2.6.2-3: autogenerated debian/control in original package: Build-Depends-Indep: yada (= 0.34), po-debconf autoregenerated debian/control in sid environment: Build-Depends-Indep: yada (= 0.48), po-debconf autogenerated debian/control in sarge environment (i.e. for security update) Build-Depends-Indep: yada (= 0.34), po-debconf So, it is the same version as in original package. Please respond if you don't want this NMU to happen, if you are working yourself on a patch or if you think that the attached patch won't work. Note that this also resolves the build error and fixes the clean target. no need to NMU, I'll include most of your patch and do the upload for libssl later today. N.b. your clean-target-fix does break with svn-buildpackage and is therefore unlikely to be included. Hm. I think you did, actually: The reason I hesitated adding yaird to SVN is that it is not a Debian-native package, so I believe it makes better sense only to maintain the debian subdir here and use a virgin tarball from upstream. I am relatively new to that approach and had help making awstats group-maintained that way. So I wanted to make an excercise out of this, figuring out exactly how to set it up, also for setting up group-maintainance of the remaining 40 packages of mine. And also, I suggested an improved patch, and wanted to hold my breath until later today for comments from Erik before deciding if I want to take my chances and use that or the earlier one from him. - Jonas - -- * Jonas Smedegaard - idealist og Internet-arkitekt * Tlf.: +45 40843136 Website: http://dr.jones.dk/ - Enden er nær: http://www.shibumi.org/eoti.htm -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFDUj8bn7DbMsAkQLgRAiP2AJ4lksJ2TLdU1/h7yEQnWpgzw17FJACdGuND WW6HYuLgQx9X6emiXaEEjIw= =LA3Q -END PGP SIGNATURE-

Bug#333987: external linphone address book
Hi, Martin Samuelsson wrote: Package: linphone Version: 1.1.0-2 Severity: wishlist It would be sweet if linphone were able to access an external address book. That should probably be done as flexible as possible. Maybe there are some gnome libraries out there for phone book handeling? If not, most preferably would be handeling that with output from pipes/loadable modules. To make it suit different users needs. To the best of my knowledge, there is no unified library for handling adress books (do you have in mind some prog which is able to handle them uniformly?). Bug#334223: kdesktop_lock segfaults if Japanese characters are entered in login dialog, using XIM
Package: kdesktop Version: 4:3.4.2-3 Severity: normal After kdesktop_lock --forcelock is started, and the screen is locked, if Japanese UTF-8 characters are entered, it crashes with a segfault and unlocks the screen. This is reproducible 100% on my system. I have installed packages scim and scim-canna, started using im-switch, i.e. the following commands are started: /usr/sbin/cannaserver -u canna /usr/bin/scim -d The following environment variables are set: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 [EMAIL PROTECTED] GTK_IM_MODULE=scim This configuration works very fine for typing Japanese in any X app, including KDE apps. Here is how I can predictably produce the bug: 1- start kdesktop_lock --forcelock (as it is started by KDE's lock button applet) 2- move the mouse to make the dialog appear 3- type CTRL+SPACE, to activate scim: the scim panel appears, and Canna should be selected as an IM method 4- type a few random characters (not the user password) 5- type ENTER: kdesktop_lock crashes with a segfault, which unlocks the screen Maybe this bug appears with other UTF-8 CTYPE locales (not only Japanese), and other X Input Method (not only scim), but I have not tested. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.13.2-pentiumm-ipipe Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages kdesktop depends on: ii kdebase-bin 4:3.4.2-3 core binaries for the KDE base mod ii kdelibs4c24:3.4.2-4 core libraries for all KDE applica ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libaudio2 1.7-3 The Network Audio System (NAS). Bug#334013: please add i386 biarch support

One thing that I noticed in the Ubuntu packaging is a change to specify -march=x86-64 and -mtune=x86-64 when building the amd64 cross packages - is this something that applies in general when building 64 bit packages? I would have expected that GCC would have defaulted to these settings. -- You grabbed my hand and we fell into it, like a daydream - or a fever. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#333508: really nothing no suspeicious messages in the logs
Just to make things clearer: grep -nE -H pbbuttonsd /var/log/* doesn't give any suspicious messages only piles of INFO about which scripts have been started and such. Of course when I installed a new kernel and forgot to load evdev I got a WARNING about that but after echo evdev /etc/modules everything was the same again ... I really have no idea what is going on there. Ulf -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
