Bug#442645: exim4: newer BDB
On Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 09:53:40AM +0200, Andreas Metzler wrote: There are a couple of reasons why exim should not always automatically use the latest and greatest bdb. exim is in base (Priority: standard). - The newest and latest bdb has not always been of sufficiently high priority itself.[1] Agreed, but this is a chicken-egg problem, and will be solved every time as a direct result of pam keeping up. - IMHO base should try to limit itself to one version of bdb at a time. There is no big win in exim switching, if e.g. libpam-modules or libsasl2-2 (required by libldap2 which gnupg depends on) does not. Agreed, and pam now build-depends on libdb-dev. Unfortunately, I think that openldap will be clinging to db4.2 for as long as it can. - Users sometimes configure exim to pull data from other b-db using software (e.g. DRAC for POP before SMTP) or use libberkeleydb-perl to build databases for exim. Therefore these should really /try/ to use bdb versions with compatible on-disk format. Since libberkeleydb-perl is already using a newer version of BDB than exim, I see more value in having both packages on the same version. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. But the submission rules say that your rules are not acceptable and that you should put .+$ after them, because those are the rules, but I did not make them. Ok, if there is no technical reason, why every rule should end with $ I would suggest to change the rules then. To have .*$ at the end of a rule really makes no sense to me. And the fact that you do not worry about performance does not mean that I shouldn't, does it? :-) If you do, please concentrate your energy on other parts of logcheck which are much greater performance hogs than regexps processed by egrep. :) fair enough. But having more efficient rules is already a start :) So, in short: I am convinced that the (logcheck) rules I submitted are best kept as they are (not using an $ at the end), because it is their intention to be unspecific. If you agree, I can also submit them as a patch. I am fine with your rules. You don't need to make a patch, but if you want, please go ahead. git is fun to play with. Ok. I had enough fun today already ;-) I will play with git next time. cheers, Hp. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This bug only occurs with with tomcat5.5_5.5.23-1 (lenny/sid), not with 5.5.20-2 (stable). Bug#415366: kdevelop: Other navigation methods
Package: kdevelop Version: 4:3.4.1.-3 Followup-For: Bug #415366 Hi, There are quite some other methods to switch between open files. One is called Next/Previous Window and can be assigned a shortcut in the Shortcut Settings. There's also a Quick-Open for Opened Files, usually the shortcut for that is Strg+/. It gives you a list of open files and an edit field with autocompletion from these (just like the usualy quick-open). There's also the navigation History (Actions are called back/forward), without default shortcuts. Thus IMHO there's no justification for the important severity. Hello, Andreas Fuchs wrote (13 Oct 2006 10:13:37 GMT) : Well, doing it isn't so hard; the code is already in the file, AFAICT. I'm no longer using gnus, though (or reading debian development groups), so testing a fix is pretty hard for me right now. [...] That way, Frank can set anti-debian-devel-announce-group-name to the gnus group name debian-devel-announce mail lands in, and bug numbers will be highlighted - package names, too. Well, sure, the code to highlight bug numbers is already working great, and already provides a way to open the related BTS page in a browser. But the original wishlist bug (#218286) submitter asked for a way to read such bugs as a Gnus ephemeral group, using the functionality provided by debian-bug.el. Quoting the original submitter : « what I really love about debian-bug.el is the option to read bugs as mail, instead of opening them in a web browser. It's more seamless and you don't have to leave the One True Editor. Would be great to have the same option for gnus-BTS.el! I.e. reading a mail in gnus, do RET or middle-mouse-click on a bug number and read the referenced bug report just as any other news posting in gnus. » Then Peter S Galbraith suggested several ways to implement this : « You could have a defcustom to set whether the button calls browse-url or debian-bug-get-bug-as-email or prompt via a pop-up menu. » But well, since you don’t use Gnus anymore, I guess you’re not interested in writing such code, are you ? Bug#438179: glibc's getaddrinfo() sort order
Anthony Towns writes (Re: glibc's getaddrinfo() sort order): On Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 06:19:10PM -0700, Steve Langasek wrote: So do you have a use case where you think the behavior described in rule 9 *is* desirable? Any application written assuming this behaviour, works correctly on Windows, Solaris, *BSD and glibc based systems in general, but not on Debian. You're completely missing the point. Applications are NOT written assuming this behaviour. Applications are written assuming the behaviour of gethostbyname and then later the call to gethostbyname is replaced by getaddrinfo when the application is upgraded to support IPv6. Let us take a concrete example: http over tcp as implemented by curl. Originally, curl would call gethostbyname. gethostbyname would get its answers from the DNS, with the usual round robin. curl would then connect to the first address in the list. Across the population of calling clients, curl would (just as with other applications such as web browsers) pick the one of the available addresses with roughly equal probability. So that is what the DNS administrator for the site intends by the publication of multiple address records. Now, curl is changed to support IPv6. These are not very intrusive changes but one of them involves a pretty much direct replacement of gethostbyname with getaddrinfo. After being changed in this way curl will sort the addresses according to rule 9. This means for each client the address is always the same, and which one depends on the client's idea of its own address. Since clients are nowhere near uniformly distributed in the address space, this will direct the traffic quite non-uniformly. This is not what the DNS administrator had intended and represents a change to the behaviour. So to recap the three possibilites I mentioned were: ] (a) It is correct that the behaviour of applications (and hence of ] hosts) should be changed to comply with rule 9. Ie the DNS administrator was wrong, even if these DNS records were published before the change was made or before RFC3484 was written. I assume you're not proposing this. ] (b) Application behaviour should not change; getaddrinfo should ] behave the same way as gethostbyname. This seems obviously correct to me. ] (c) Application behaviour should not change but getaddrinfo should ] comply with rule 9. Applications should therefore not be changed ] to use getaddrinfo instead of gethostbyname. And yours, which seems like a version of (c) to me: ] (d) Applications should use getaddrinfo(), and if the ordering behaviour ] it uses is not desired, they should use an ordering that is desired. Is the ordering behaviour desired ? Obviously not. So you seem to be suggesting that the direct replacement of gethostbyname with getaddrinfo is wrong in this case. So how should curl be changed to use the desired (DNS round robin, or equivalent) ordering ? What is special about curl ? I could replace curl with almost any other application in the argument above and come to the same conclusions. Ian. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Here's the new bug report where you should reply now. Could you check that the problem is not caused by events coming through both /dev/psaux and /dev/input/mice? The kernel multiplexes several devices including /dev/psaux into /dev/input/mice. So if the behavior of Xserver 1.4 change a bit regarding this, that could explain duplicated events. Bug#438179: glibc's getaddrinfo() sort order
Anthony Towns writes (Re: glibc's getaddrinfo() sort order): As it happens I largely agree with that. I don't agree with making a decision to go against an IETF standard and glibc upstream lightly, though, no matter how many caps Ian expends repeating that it's at the least mature level of Internet standard. Firstly: the STANDARD BEHAVIOUR FOR IPV4 IS THAT IMPLEMENTED BY GETHOSTBYNAME. I wonder how familiar you are with Internet protocol standardisation, and the IETF ? The purely document-oriented and de jure approach your taking doesn't seem to match actual Internet practice very well. Internet standards are living documents describing an evolving network. It is well known that if you read the RFCs as your only source of guideance for implementation you will go badly wrong. Making reference to an RFC which contradicts long-established existing behaviour is rather beside the point. Secondly: RFC3484 mandates that all applications should change, even those using gethostbyname. (You have completely ignored this point.) Thirdly: I'm not saying we should make this decision lightly. Saying we shouldn't go against ... lightly is just weasel-words. Is this discussion [going] against ... lightly ? No, of course not. What that argument would really be if you had any confidence in it would be shouldn't go against ... at all - but of course that's absurd. I would like to expand on this point about standards. Slavish adherence to standards, or to the views of mistaken upstreams, is a generally a mistake. This is particularly the case for the Debian Technical Committee. The TC's job is to decide what the correct behaviour is, by considering the technical merits. The TC's job is not to interpret standards documents. (Indeed, within our jurisdiction, our job includes changing them if we disagree with them.) Obviously we need to use standards documents to help understand the behaviour of the actual computing systems, to understand what is expected of our systems and what responses other systems are likely to produce. If we find ourself in clear disagreement with a standard we ought to ask ourselves whether we're sure we really understand the situation fully. As the implementor of a DNS resolver library, a past IETF participant, a DNS administrator, and someone who's followed some of the IPv6 transition work, I'm convinced I have that understanding. If you feel you don't have that understanding them please ask the questions which would help you gain it. I think we should be able to answer them. Bug#443442: GnomeSword dependency draws in Arabic Bible
Package: gnomesword Version: 2.2.3-1 GnomeSword package depends on sword-text etc. They draw some random packages in; in Ubuntu people complain about having AraSV, an Arabic Bible as a default. Ubuntu BibleTime maintainers have changed it to depend directly on sword-text-kjv. Why not be depended on only sword-text-kjv? Users have to learn how to install extra modules anyways. Dict and comm could be recommended or even only suggested. The same goes for BibleTime though it has only recommendations. Actually the dependency on modules could be in sword library package. Then it would install those modules for all frontends. Bug#443446: kdebase package dependencies are broken
Package: kdebase Version: 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-6 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Hi there, The log avoids the need of explanations: ~# apt-get install kdebase Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. Another proposal is to use a group named fileshare, that could be used to define a list of users that are allowed to define shared directories on the network (via samba, nfs, ftp or any other protocol). +1 That'd needs some discussion on -devel first, then. Package: wnpp Severity: normal I intend to orphan the libntlm packages. If you want to be the new maintainer please take them. The package description of libntlm0 is: NTLM is an authentication protocol used in various Microsoft network protocol implementations and supported by the NTLM Security Support Provider (NTLMSSP). Originally used for authentication and negotiation of secure DCE/RPC, NTLM is also used throughout Microsoft's systems as an integrated single sign-on mechanism. NTLM employs a challenge-response mechanism for authentication, in which clients are able to prove their identities without sending a password to the server. Bug#441987: Preparing NMU of libmodule-build-perl
Hi, Attached is the interdiff for a proposed NMU of libmodule-build-perl 0.2808. I guess I'll upload it in a week or so unless there are objections. The intention of this is to help with the maintenance of the package, benefiting the users. Currently it blocks newer version of libmodule-scandeps-perl, which in turn blocks newer version of libpar-perl. BioPerl packages need newer Module::Build too. Finally, Jay, as already said many times, you're more than welcome to maintain your perl packages within pkg-perl (getting lots of co-maintainers for free). Stop by #debian-perl if you have questions. The current state of the proposed NMU is at: * svn+ssh://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-perl/trunk/libmodule-build-perl (for developers -- all debian developers plus all non-DD members of pkg-perl alioth project) * svn://svn.debian.org/pkg-perl/trunk/libmodule-build-perl (anonymous SVN) Changelog: -- libmodule-build-perl (0.2808-0.1) UNRELEASED; urgency=low * Non-maintainer upload for the Debian Perl Group * New upstream release (Closes: #365241) * Moved debhelper from Build-Depends-Indep to Build-Depends and bumped compatibility level to 5 * Apply patch by Steffen Moeller [EMAIL PROTECTED] so that modules which use Module::Build install man pages using correct section. Bug#443447: Displays wrong file trasnfer size (on msn, 192KiB)
Package: pidgin Version: 2.2.0-1~bpo1 Severity: minor Hi! This problem applies to a version of pidgin I backported to etch, but there is no reason to believe it won't be in unstable too... Note that 2.0.1, also backported, didn't have it. When I get an incoming file transfer, at least using the msn protocol, the file size is shown to be 192KiB no matter what the real size is. Then the remaining figure is correct and also the transfer works correctly, so this is just a cosmetic issue. Thanks!! The Venezuelan government has announced that the proposed switch to UTC-0430 will be delayed until the first week of October 2007. It might be delayed once again, but no further than December 2007. Or did I missed something? In a previous run, aide detected changes (most probably the zope log file), and thus the newly generated database was not copied over the old one. After the next log rotation, the log-related rules didn't apply any more and you got the report quoted above. Bug#391172: gnomermind: Help does not open help file.
I can confirm this bug, but I do not think it is directly related to gnomermind. Instead I think it's a bug in libgnome32. I am not a C programmer, but digging through the gnomermind source code, it seems that to me that when the help menu is accessed, gnomermind calls the gnome_help_goto function, and this function uses ghelp to display the help files. As far as I can tell, ghelp appears to either have been deprecated or changed to gnome-help and/or yelp. If you try to manually display the gnomermind help files with gnome-help or yelp in a terminal it works fine. The gnome_help_goto function is in gnome-help.c and gnome-url.c, both of which are part of libgnome32. Googling around found a similar report in Ubuntu, which was apparently fixed in Breezy, but I can't find a patch or how they fixed it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-docs/+bug/23166 I also found some posts to various GNOME mailing lists that seem to talk about this issue as well: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2002-May/msg00020.html http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-devel-list/1999-April/msg00211.html I am working on becoming the maintainer of this package and if that occurs, I might mark this bug as closed since it seems that it's not really a gnomermind bug, but a libgnome32 bug, though my lack of C skills could mean my investigation and conclusions are incorrect. :-) Chess -- Chess Griffin GPG Public Key: 0x0C7558C3 http://www.chessgriffin.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
