[IxDA Discuss] The career path to ixda...?

2008-07-08 Thread Bert Copello
I recently gave some advice to a young lady in NYC; interested in
pursuing a career as an Interaction Designer. This was admittedly
general and more limited to a nudge in a direction that would create an
avenue of information. I am not an Interaction Designer; I support a
consulting firm that engages Designers for long term project work.

She had hosts of questions; including questions about entry level
opportunities that might put her in a relevant environment while she
advanced her education with relevant course work.

The questions I would submit on her behalf would include: what are best
education courses to take; to build the right foundation, best places to
take them (preferably in NYC) and how best to present herself as novice
seeking to work in some entry level capacity; in a relevant environment;
to support an IA context and benefit from the exposure to professionals
currently engaged as an Interaction Designer...

Any insights or leads from our esteemed online contribtutors?

Thanks in [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks so much for sending this, Dan. I've been searching for a decent
free IA tool for a volunteer project working with colleagues with
differing levels of technical ability and mostly online. Pencil looks
like it might fit our needs.

And hey, they build for Firefox. It works for me.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Hotel Websites: Flagship User Experience

2008-07-08 Thread Jakob Biesterfeldt
Hi,

About user needs and expectations like wanting to know what the
bathroom looks like - we have done a lot of research for hotels and
online travel in Europe and have heard similarly interesting requests
including:

Close-up pictures of the floors/carpets
View from the window(s)
Pictures of the breakfeast buffet

Many people would prefer realistic pictures to glossy
professional shots. Videos and 360-views as well as interactive
walk-throughs are regarded as more credible than pictures.

Another frequent request is about being able to compare hotels and
hotel rooms easily. Has anyone seen a good example of online
comparison tools?

It's not particularly about hotels, but I like the idea and it's
fun anyway:

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Should persuasion be left to marketers?

2008-07-08 Thread Josh Powell
So, is persuasion a part of what we do as IxD, and if it is should we seek
expert opinion from those who are experts at persuasion?

I think that a large part of what we do is persuasion, but in a different
way then a lot of marketing seems to do it. A lot of marketing is just
getting in people's face to build brand awareness. Marketing is responsible
for pop up ads, a terribly unpersuasive and unproductive user experience.
Marketing is responsible for sticking advertisements on the top or left side
of pages that nobody clicks on. Marketing is responsible for those horrible
ads that when you roll over them expand to cover most of the page.
Marketing is often responsible for wanting splash pages in front of the
content.

Marketing does not yet understand interactivity. They persuade through
projection.. TV, magazine ads, radio, billboards, the thing they all have in
common is that they are passive experiences. If you want to build a passive
persuasive experience, seek out marketing. If you want to build a
persuasive interactive experience, and everything on the web is an
interactive experience, I think that most marketing departments and people
are not up to the task. There are exceptions, of course, but for the most
part not. Even these company sponsored Alternate Reality Games that attract
a ton of hard core users because of their interactivity, imo, fail at their
marketing message. No one buys McDonalds because they hired a company that
created a fun ARG.

I hope I am not skewing or shifting the point of this argument. But I
think the question I am hearing Robert ask is. who does the designer
  work for?

That's not at all what I'm asking. We work for both the user and the
 business.

I'm concerned with the details—those tiny, subtle details that influence
people (ethically, of course). The words you use in your value proposition
statement and/or tagline. The numbers you choose to show on the homepage.
Which bullet points you use to entice the most people. And so on.

A good marketer should know how to craft these elements really well. Should
 an IxD know, too?

[IxDA Discuss] Secondary Research Methods

2008-07-08 Thread Stephanie McNee

First time post!

Recently I've been reading / hearing / conversing about how to
identify your target demographic and what constitutes secondary
research and the difference between that and marketing.

I have heard several different views from clients / contractors and
employers from basically - the company does user research for
everything including information serach into the broad scope to
identify demographics and revenue - to that of marketing who
identifies the demographic and user researchers deep dive into the
user types, tasks etc.

Does anyone have any views on this? What should be defined by
marketing and what is secondary research? Who should define the scope
of users e.g. for our website we are targeting X user type? and what
happens when the scope is very broad? What would constitute reliable
secondary research when no marketing is available?

Just a few thoughts to get the ball rolling ;)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Error Messages (Was: Hiding and Disabling Menu Items)

2008-07-08 Thread Suman Paul
Yes as suggested by AJ, progressive errors is a good idea.
But displaying errors when user tabs out ... how or where to show when you
have three column of fields.
Floating layers along with the field seems to be one solution.

But it might be a pain if user decides to go ahead with the error or warning
for later revision. Soon he might end up with bubbles all over the screen.
Extreme case but just in case.

On Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 6:42 PM, Alok Jain [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Suman,

1st part of the solution would ofcourse be how the forms are designed - to
 prevent the error itself.

If the error does happen, here aret eh things we have done with long forms:
 1. Display error as user moves from one field to the next and not on
Submission. This reduces the number of errors users have to deal with
 2. In our case we created a hierarchy of errors - for instance if a
password field was left blank - then we throw and error that it was blank
and not that it did not have minimum characters and it did not use a number
 etc.. so only 1 error

For me things are bit different.
Inline error although is a god idea but most of the forms being large
and having constraint of showing maximum in one page kinda rules it
 out.
Combine with it numerous validation error which might occur,
developers shy away from providing specific error messages and prefer
throwing generic and even in some cases technical error messages.

Any proven method how to show error in such situation?

Of course simplifying the form itself will solve lot of problem, but
yet we are left with lot of fields and more the field more the chance
 of error.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] UCD Broken? I say NO

2008-07-08 Thread Thomas Petersen
Well I agree to a certain extent if it wasn't exactly that this is
the problem of UCD. It does not really go outside it's own premises
to integrate as a part of a process, but claim to be the
verification point of the process.

I was taught a very simple thing when I studied design. Design is a
decision. In other words you need to make good decisions in order to
create good design. What constitutes a good decisions is a different
story all together and UCD does not really look at that. Instead it
caters although maybe unintentionally to a wisdom of the crowds
aesthetic WITHOUT including the knowledge already accumulated by many
years of knowledge from the designers.

The crowds is not wrong because they are the users of your product,
design, platform, interface whatever you wanna call it so you end up
with UCD being percieved as the most objective way to validate your
product.

UCD would make sense to a certain extent if it was applied correctly
I agree, but it never is and never will be because of the nature of
how projects that utilizes on it are done today.

Also many of the people who uses UCD have an academic background and
have never actually done any nity gritty design themselves which add
further to the problem of the whole area. Academic people will most
often have a much more strategically important position than the
designers and will therefore be the people translating and verifying
the actual design through these processes up against the clients.

UCD basically most often makes no sense other than from an economic
and political point of view (the agency doing it can make money since
they are selling it as yet another component and the client will have
secured themselves from any punishment from upper management by being
able to claim that it was based around UCD)

UCD should IMHO if anything be something you use AFTER the launch to
alter your product based on the input.

This is where the input is valuable and the feedback can be used to
make decisions.

But at the current state it ads no value but basically simply just
is a proof that many companies don't really dare making decisions
and dare I say fail.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Should persuasion be left to marketers?

2008-07-08 Thread Thomas Petersen
Good products sell themselves. So the better a company is at creating
any given product or service with as much thinking around those small
subtle points already in the conceptual stage the better.

Copy-writing should be at least something that you have an opinion
about even more so how to help the marketeer simplify his/her
messaging which I guess is as much an information design skill.

For instance if a bullet point paragraph contains two different
points maybe it is better to actually create two bullet points.

[IxDA Discuss] Pencil: open-source wireframing Firefox add-on

2008-07-08 Thread Liou Yamane
Hi there,

I just found out about Pencil, an open-source wireframing tool that is

interesting and I love the fact that it's free. I have already mailed the

The question which wireframing/prototyping tool is best has already been asked,
I am interested if you know about other open-source products such as Pencil.

2008-07-08 Thread mark schraad
In my little world, we see corresponding trends towards SEO and away
from Brand and Marketing as tools for finding customers. But it is
difficult to determine if that is caused by market conditions,
industry trends or corporate agendas.

Traditionally I have looked at marketing as long term and very
difficult to metric, and sales as short term and very metric driven.
But in the 'what have you done for me this week' world of portals and
online advertising, if you can not metric results (favorable) in the
next 15 days, month or quarter, the resources will not be there for
you. As a result, investment in deep research and long term vision is
missing from the landscape of recent years.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Pencil: open-source wireframing Firefox add-on

2008-07-08 Thread pauric
Thanks Greg, I'll highlight the issues and ask an open question.

1) Johnny Lee has two versions of the whiteboard app on his site, I
had to use the older.
2) I'm 'writing' on an painted wall. As such the IR LED would not
reflect off the wall back to the wiimote. I had to modify the general
design of the pen so that the LED pointed back towards the wiimote.
3) the current general design of the IR LED pens has a momentary
switch operated by your finger. I placed the switch at the tip of
the pen.. so when I press down, the LED comes on.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/pauric/2650415902/

So, the contents of the posted video are just proof of concept. I'm
working on a multitouch navigation of our application's visual
models. I'm not seeing the collaborative whiteboard vision. That
said I'm really interested in people's perspectives on problems
this might solve for designers.

Aside from a few edge cases I dont see how this is any better than
projector/keyboard/mouse

thanks /pauric

For more details, see the full listing at:* *

*Looking for volunteers to present their deliverables! Must RSVP at the LA
UX Meetup website link above.*

*Topic: Deliverables Poster Session*

For those of you who've been to the IA Summit in past years, this session
will be familiar to you. This is an entire session dedicated to sharing a
variety of deliverables for people to browse through, discuss and be
inspired by. It's a chance to see how others are communicating design to
their coworkers and clients. Pick up some tips and tricks that your peers
are using or participate to get feedback on your deliverables!

We need some presenters for this one, so if you've got something from a
previous project --an interesting wireframe, a creative new way of showing a
sitemap, or a funky diagram that really sells the concept -- share it with
us! We're looking for any type of deliverables ranging from personas to
wireframes to conceptual models to user research reports - the whole
spectrum of outputs from your IA sweat and tears. If you're interested,
contact Coco Chalfant at cocochalfant at gmail.com.

Unfortunately, Yahoo! can't offer parking validation. Therefore, we
recommend street parking, primarily along Broadway. The block of the

plenty of space available after 6 pm. However, the parking garage is
available to the public, but it'll cost $29, which is obviously quite
expensive.
