Re: [slim] Frivolous Question ('Center' vs. 'Centre')

2008-01-24 Thread bpa

I think it is ironic that the OP probably speaks Hiberno English where
we have have own local spellings/phrases. For example, sometimes using
ye instead of you. Who are we to criticise ?

I can accept spelling variations but my pet hate is typography where
letters in the middle of a word are capitalised (capitalized) as this
is not proper English spelling. The capitalisation in
SqueezeCenter emphasises that is a product name rather than a word.

Re: [slim] Rapid shuffle of long playlist

2008-01-24 Thread dcote

hey puzzler - and i thought i was the only one using LONG playlists in
shuffle mode! ;-)

mine are only ~800 songs, but i agree the delay is there. on my system,
it took about 15-20 sec. for SS 6.x to start playing the lists shuffled.
while not instantaneous, i can live with that.
i have a severley resource starved server: 700 MHz PIII equivalent VIA
ITX MoBo with 1GB and it is running LOTS of stuff.

how long are you waiting?

i am not sure if this will help you, but i discovered something just
recently...
my playlist manager (personal playlist manager plugin for winamp) seems
to be adding junk to my playlists. i had a playlist called mood groovy
which had ~700 tracks in it and was ~85KB in size. when i accidentally
re-saved it from inside winamp, it shrunk to 14KB and all 700 tracks
all still there! go figure...

anyways, i am imagining my SS 6 is faster now, it rarely needs more
than 10 sec. to load mood groovy shuffled.

here is what i did: opened mood groovy in winamp. immediately
re-saved it (different file name) - shrunk to 14KB. re-scanned
playlists in SS. done!

maybe you want to try that?

other than that, i really wouldnt know either - sorry!

Re: [slim] Slimserver + new Last.FM features?

2008-01-24 Thread mikeswingler

Can someone please advise a beginner how to get Last.fm onto an SB3.
I've downloaded SC7 and have a Last.fm acount, but so far haven't been
successful. A further point is how do you know what an URL is so you
can input to SC7.
Slim Devices seem good at catering for US based customers (Pandora,
Rhapsody etc), but for a computer illiterate beginner getting european
services like Napster and Last.fm seems to require computer knowhow
beyond my level.

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

Duet - looks like a nice alternative to the SB3 though I'll not be
rushing out to get one if it offers no audio quality improvement (not
that my SB3 with external DAC is bad in any way).
It was irritating though to find that the Duet needs a 9v supply unlike
the 5v of the SB3. What would I do with my current investment in a
linear, regulated model ?
I'm no electrical engineer but do get more and more hacked off with
needing dozens of wall warts etc where every product seems to have a
slightly different need (they come with different power ratings,
physical configurations, plug diameters etc). Would it not be possible
to standardise supplies around 2 or three alternatives (eg 5v, 12v,
18v) so at least there's the possibility of using existing gear ? Could
the duet have been made to work with 5V (esp if the receiver circuitry
is much the same)
Ah well . . . .

Re: [slim] Slimserver + new Last.FM features?

2008-01-24 Thread smc2911

SC7 doesn't currently support playing last.fm radio streams. To do this
you will need James's LastFM plugin: you'll find a link here
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PluginsAudio and the download
itself is here: http://www.jamescraig.co.uk/SlimServer/lastfm.html

What SC7 does support is scrobbling, so that once you enter your lastFM
details into SC7 the music you play will be recorded to your lastFM
charts. If you enter your details into SqueezeNetwork (beta) as well
then the music you play on Rhapsody, Slacker, etc will also be
scrobbled to LastFM.

Once you go into beta territory, you really are on your own. If you

Sorry, no I won't.

It's not about your underlying problem - it's clearly very frustrating
and I support your right to come on here and vent - it's a discussion
forum for users to give feedback after all.

But what on earth makes you think using that kind of language is ok and
the rest of us should just deal with it? I don't want to read that
kind of stuff, both on a personal level and because it's just another
example of a gradual but continual societal slide, that makes people
think it's -ok- to use those words because you're angry. It's not.

The reason these forums work so well is because, whatever disagreements
and frustrations bubble up, the people here mostly get that you need
to have a fundamental and basic level of respect for each other when
posting.

On a personal level, I'd be grateful if you'd edit the post and then we
all can get back to bashing the stability of SC7 and whether you should
expect a beta to perform as a release verion. Speaking for myself, SC7
is close to being a release candidate, so I'm not sure it's as
straightforward as saying it's a beta, what did you expect?. I don't
think you should expect a total service failure at this stage of
development for no reason (assuming you're running a recent beta).

Can you describe better what happened?
If SC7 stopped, how did you try to restart it?
Did anyone at the party have access to the server or the front end to
select tunes - if so, what were they doing when SC went down?
Was the SC service and MYSQL running/paused/stopped in Windows
Services?
Was there any error message when you tried to restart?
What about in the Windows Event Log (you run on Windows right)?

I disagree. I don't think anyone has a right to expect reliable
performance from a beta until it ceases to be a beta. Any serious
failure at this late stage of development is a serious concern and
should be highlighted as such, but customers should not -complain-
about failings in anything other than properly released software, and
even then they should do so in a civil manner.

Here is how I read your post haunyack:

Guys I'm posting to remind you all of what an incredibly stupid and
obnoxious person I am. I hosted a 140+ people houseparty using beta
software. When the SC7 beta crashed. Instead of accepting
responsibility for my own actions, I blamed the folks over at Logitech.
I went one step further though and went online and insulted them, used
foul language and to add insult to injury I embarrassed myself, my
family and my education by exposing my complete lack reason.

Why? Because I've had no decent upbringing that's why. My parents
taught me to always blame whatever happens to me on someone else. The
reason being is that I have a God complex. No-one ever punished me for
doing anything wrong for fear of damaging my inner-child. So now I go
around blaming everything on everyone else.

Here is a pointer for you. Even if you were running the manufacturer's
recommended version of Slimserver it could have crashed. If you are the
host of the party you should have had a plan B for that.

PS. The way you spell embarrassed is embarrassing. And ameteur is

As it appears to have been about 2:30am when haunyack posted this, I
conclude that this was a knee-jerk response, fuelled by
embarrassment... and probably alcohol. Let's hope haunyack comes back
into the forum in the morning and removes the, frankly unnecessary, bad

It's easy to say it's a beta, you should know better but we're all
guilty of becoming complacent about these things, especially when they
normally work so well, which makes it even more frustrating when they
go pear-shaped.

If SC7 really is as close to release candidate phase as suggested then
this is something that needs careful (and calmer) analysis.

Re: [slim] Slimserver + new Last.FM features?

2008-01-24 Thread Siduhe

If you are running SC7, you need a different version of the plugin which
is here:

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/slimscrobbler/SqueezeScrobbler_v1.zip

The install instructions are in a readme file inside the .zip (this
is true of many plugins), but I set them out below with a few additions
of my own:

How to install:
Stop Squeezecenter
Unzip SC7 plugin Last.fm into a directory you have easy access to (not
Squeezecenter)
Move the unziped directory into the Server/Plugins directory of your
SqueezeCentre installation.
Note - *not Server/Slim/Plugin*!
The SqueezeScrobbler directory should contain Plugin.pm etc. and
ScrobbleSupport
Restart SqueezeCentre
Point your browser at the SqueezeCentre's web interface, and navigate
to Server Settings - LastFM / SlimScrobbler
Enter your Last.fm accounts and select which one is the default for new
players.

You will also need to disable the built in Last.fm/Audioscrobbler
plugin if you are using James' version otherwise everything will
scrobble twice.

Go to Server SEttings, Advanced, Plugins and untick Last.fm
Audioscrobbler, then save.

If you have multiple SlimDevices units or streaming clients, you can

Re: [slim] Slimserver + new Last.FM features?

Thanks so much!
But is that really the latest version for SC7?

You also shouldn't need to disable the built in AudioScrobbler plugin,
in the latest version SqueezeScrobbler should (?) disable its own
scrobbling if it detects the other plugin is correctly configured.

very good idea. Will edit.

The advantage other services have over MusicIP is that MusicIP is only
going to play you stuff out of your own collection, where of course the
radio-type services can present brand new stuff to you . But for
listening out of my own library, I'm constantly, notably delighted with
the mixes that MusicIP comes up with.

I've struggled with the interaction between MusicIP and Squeeze, but
I've never invested enough time in it to try and resolve it. Once 7

The thing that is cool about Tapestry is the control over parameters
that you can play with. Add a touch of Dinner Party (theme) here...
some Adult Alternative (genre) there... plus some Somber and Pensive

It's fun to PLAY with your music.

One of the forum users has done a lot of work on some tools to help out
people who are struggling with MIP integration and some good basic
explanations: see http://spicefly.com/content/category/5/16/32/

I have also found that running MIP headless has improved the
stability of integration with Slimserver and now Squeezecenter - again
a good explanation of what is involved in this on the Spicefly site.

I use Tapestry, MP3Tunes smart playlists and MIP, but for me MIP still
has the edge, particularly the ability in MIP to define your own Moods
which SC can use to produce MoodMixes. Although a big part of my
preference for MIP may be that it is integrated with SC...

Adding multiple players doesn't have any affect on gapless playback
unless they're synced. The controller is a controller, not a player

Thanks for the reply, radish. I was, in fact, talking about synced
gapless. I was wondering because the controller is showing what is
playing and therefore needs to be 'kind of synced'.

If not, then this is what I've been trying to get my other SB3s to
do... be used as controllers and monitors (without audio)without
messing with the lossless.

I also noticed the headphone jack on the controller. Once that is
turned on, it WILL be a player and would probably kill lossless
playback.

Re: [slim] Wireless bridge question

2008-01-24 Thread hau

seanadams;172362 Wrote:
When the SB3 is operating in bridging mode, it keeps track of who is on
the ethernet side and who is on the wireless side - it knows where to
 send a packet.

What happens when it doesn't know who's on which side?

Reason I'm asking this, is that I'm trying to use WOL to wake up my
living room PC from internet (using e.g. dslreports.com's wakeup
service http://www.dslreports.com/wakeup).

If I send a WOL magic packet from my local net it of course spreads via
WLAN to SB3 and, as it is a broadcast packet, SB3 forwards it to the
ethernet port and the PC wakes up.

When I'm using the dslreports' 'service' the packet comes to my network
as a _unicast_ packet. I have configured my ADSL-modem/router with
static ARP for the PC, and a rule to forward UDP port 9 packets to the
PC's IP address.

When I've connected the PC to one of the ADSL-modem/router's ethernet
ports send the packet from internet, my PC wakes up.

When I place the PC on SB3's ethernet port and send the packet from the
same site the PC stays powered off.

In my understanding there might be two reasons for this.
- Either the ADSL device forgets to forward the packet to WLAN along
with all the ethernet ports, or
- SB3 drops the packet as it doesn't know that the addressee is on its
ethernet port.

After some email exchange with the tech guys from modem manufacturer,
they assure me that all packets that are distributed to the ethernet
ports will also be sent to WLAN. If this is the case, then the SB3
drops the packet and I'd like to know whether it would be possible to
change the behavior of SB3's IP stack in such a way, that if it doesn't
know (no entry in ARP table?) the recipients 'location' on the net, it
would forward the packet?

Best regards,
Mika

I think the key part of that is kind of. AFAIK, SC7 makes no attempt
to change the Now Playing information on the SBC at *precisely* the
same moment that the audio tracks change. Likewise, I expect (but have
absolutely zero hard evidence) that once the player is activated in the
SBC, it will only cause problems with gapless if you explicitly try to
sync it *as a player*.

Not that I'm aware of, but Slimserver will play .m3u or .pls files, so
if you create these in MediaMonkey and save them in the Slimserver
playlist directory they will get picked up on a Playlist Rescan.

A few caveats though, Slimserver needs to see the paths to your files
in a playlist in the same way as it sees the files in your Music
Library. This will only be an issue if your music files are stored
somewhere other than the place that Slimserver is installed, like a
network drive for example.

So, if your Music Library is \\server\Music\song.mp3 and your
playlist points to the same song as E:/Music/song.mp3, the playlist
won't work. Slimserver also currently doesn't support relative paths
for playlists, you have to use an absolute path
(i.e. the full \\server\song...).

A playlist is just a text file with links to your songs, so if you open
your playlist files up in a text editor like Notepad or Editpad you will
be able easily to see if the file paths need changing to match your
Music Library setup. You can either use Find and Replace (depending on
your text editor) and resave the playlist (then do a playlist rescan),
or use a batch script to automate the process. If you run Windows and
are interested in a simple script with a frontend that someone very
kindly made available to me, let me know.

In terms of playlist creation actually in Slimsever, the forthcoming
new version of Slimserver (Squeezecenter 7.0 which is in beta testing
right now), is step forward. It supports drag and drop playlist
creation for example.

There's also MusicIP which is integrated with Slimserver in the same
way as Itunes, and supports mood and automatic playlist creation.

[slim] Running Dtrace for files being opened

I started an rsync job last night on my Solaris box and it was still
running this morning (and still running now!) so I wanted to see if I

have no output on it. I had the idea to use Dtrace to show what files
were being opened on the system. Dtrace showed each file being copied
but what I was surprised to see was some of the activity from
SlimServer, particularly the frequent call to /etc/protocols. It will
make 8 seperate requests right in a row, then wait for awhile and do it
again.

What's in that file that's so interesting to SlimServer?

There are two typos in specs page for the receiver. I am not a native

[slim] Flac tag problem

2008-01-24 Thread jfalk

I downloaded three untagged flacs from an internet site. They play fine
in MusicMonkey on my computer. I used MusicMonkey to add Artist,Title,
AlbumArtist and Album tags to the files. (I later checked with
mp3tag... they're there.) I then moved the files to my slimserver
music directory and rescanned but the files didn't show up. Any
guesses?

Re: [slim] Typos and setup question

2008-01-24 Thread radish

The controller is needed for setup because the receiver has no screen -
without that you can't tell it things like the WEP/WPA key or select
options such as DHCP/static IP. Once it's on the network it can be
fully controlled by SqueezeCenter.

There have been (strong) rumors that the requirement for the controller
may be removed in the future, so if that's a big deal for you it may be
worth waiting a little while to see what happens in that regard (as I
understand it there are some technical issues which need figuring out).
You could of course also buy the duet and once setup, sell the
controller. I'd be nervous about doing that unless the controller was
no longer needed - you never know when you might need to do a factory
reset!

The problem is that the packet which is sent from the internet is
otherwise structured as a WOL packet, but in fact is a UDP packet sent
to a certain address (unicast). (My ADSL router then forwards it
internally to the specified address.)

I have now used windump (tcpdump) and found out that the packet
actually comes to my net and is destined to the right IP. I hope to
find a PC with wireless card for the weekend to check that the packet
is also sent over the air. Then, I think, it is easier to track down
the problem.

Re: [slim] Flac tag problem

2008-01-24 Thread ceejay

- copy the offending files to a new place (maybe with a couple of good
ones)
- point slimserver just at that place
- rescan

if it still doesn't work, turn some debugging options on (eg d_scan)
and rescan, look at the logfile to see what you get.

If the logfile is cluttered you might want to disable some plugins.

If you need help with doing this, start by saying what slimserver
version and OS you are using...

Once you've setup up the controller it knows everything about your

without having to enter everything in some form again. Using a web
interface you'd have to do this twice.

Well, and then I just wanted to point out for it is an official site.

Given that I was over powering the MP120D4 (overdrawn?) what would it's
failure mode likely be? The switch just stopped working yesterday, with
the switch now always on. I've checked the output of IROUT on my
transporter and when on, the output is a nice steady 3.282 volts, so
the plugin is working fine.

So, would drawing too much current through the MP120D4 cause it to fry
closed, e.g. make it unable to switch open?

Potentially misleading comment here. The mp3tag program is well suited
for tagging FLAC files correctly, there is no need to use foobar2000.

However mp3tag will read all sorts of tags and if its possible that
MediaMonkey would have done something as badly behaved as adding id3
tags to a FLAC file (I don't use it so wouldn't know) then mp3tag will
tell you what tag types are attached to the files.

If you're not afraid of command line, ffmpeg can do just about any
to/from conversion format you like. Just pass -vn to specify no video
out, just audio. Something like this should do it:

ffmpeg -i myfile.vob -ab 128 -ac 2 -ar 44100 -acodec flac -vn
mynewfile.flac

substitute some other acodec for your use.

vlc (videolan.org) can also extract audio only using the streaming
wizard, and has a gui and pre-compiled binaries if you are more
comfortable with that.

Re: [slim] Wireless bridge question

The problem is that the packet which is sent from the internet is
otherwise structured as a WOL packet, but in fact is a UDP packet sent

Hmm. So here's an idea: try making that static ARP entry point to the
broadcast MAC: FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF.

This is a very strange and generally inadviseable thing as if it works,
it will let someone on the internet create broadcast traffic on your
LAN. However it would be an interesting test to do, although it is
possible that your router will (justifiably) refuse to send the packet
to the broadcast MAC via a static ARP entry. However if it works then
maybe firewalling that port to only allow your remote IP to reach it
would be acceptable to you.

Another thing to try would be to use a port redirect to send it to the
broadcast IP, usually X.X.X.255.

The bottom of the dead Squeezebox 2 unit my son gave me to look at a

says 5V at 1000MA (that's 5V at 1A).

Go figure!

Cheers,
