Re: [slim] Squeezeboxes are constantly losing wireless connection

2008-09-19 Thread kjc20002007

I only had my duet for 4 days when it kept saying connection timed out
by remote host
it still happened when i disabled all the virus scanners and
firewalls.
eventually i tracked the problem down to a vista update the occured on
the 18th.

As this was the only change that had occured since installing my duet,
i uninstalled it - everything is now working fine.

i neglected to make a note of the update number, but if you have had an
update around the time it happened - try uninstalling it.

hope this helps

It's not the consumers job to provide product information, it's the

No supplier can possibly provide information about all the possible

Maybe try connecting your controller to your router just to see if the

It occurred to me after replying to another poster on this thread that
it might be interesting and a good control to see which users connect
their controller bridged and which connect through a router. Then what
percentage of each has issues with the controller.

As I mentioned in the other post, since moving from bridged to routed,
I can't remember the last controller problem. Mine stays connected and
never has a problem quickly waking.

Just a thought.

 - one WEP-encrypted using Actiontec MI424WR b/g wireless router.
 - one WPA2-encrypted using D-Link DIR-655 b/g/n wireless router.
I have tried to setup SB Duet on either systems without any result. The
SB Controller connected successfully to either network. (Tried both, one
 after another, to test)

There should be no DHCP problem since I've had my SB Boom up and
running good after upgrading to 7.2. Moreover, I have about 7 other
wireless devices (camera, laptops, desktops, media extenders, ...)
getting IPs successfully from the network. The problem with SB Duet
only appears after upgrading to SC 7.2. Before that, it has been
working great, without any problem, uing the old SlimSeverr (I have to
upgrade to have the SB Boom working, and now Duet failed!).

BTW, how can I delete a player name in SC?

Boom sets up differently than DUET and much easier I might add. I had
the same issue (and ip) when I first got my DUET and found that I had
to shut DHCP off in **both** routers in order to statically address my
controller. My mistake for a while was shutting just the one off I was
trying to connect to. During the set up sequence I don't think the
controller looks at the exact router you are trying to hit for a few
critical moments. I may be wrong, but that's the way it appeared to
me. It was obviously confused somehow that there was a DHCP signal out
there, even if it couldn't use it. This junk is beyound me.

Good luck,

However, there have been suggestions from quite a few users that the way
that last.fm handles such scrobbled internet radio plays is not very
good (it goes into your last.fm profile in the same way as a regular
personally selected CD track).
Last.fm have said that they are going to re-evaluate this - but in the
meantime ... some SqueezeCenter users would like the option to suppress
such scrobbling.

I'll go and raise it as a feature request if I can't find it in
bugzilla.

Thanks for the advise. I'm not sure how I can connect my controller to
the router directly. The router is wires only (I'm still in the dark
ages with no wireless capability). I thought the only way was using the
receiver to bridge the wireless controller to the wired router.

I'm beginning to think that I may have to get a wireless router for
stability reasons and also because the battery life of the controller
is much better according to the wiki.

After powering off/resetting my receivers as requested by logitech
support, I've got problems getting them to reconnect to my router -
I've spotted another thread which looks like it covers this issue so I
won't go into detail on this thread to keep it clean (unless slim

I've been testing iSqueeze and I have to say it is amazing, really quick
for artists and looks brilliant.

However although album view worked fine at first it now crashes every
time, I only have 1,860 albums so not sure why.

Also for some reason LastFM album art doesn't come up and track
information doesn't change of the original song although the time
progress bar does seem to be correct.

It would also be great if on playing a playlist there were options to
play all and to play shuffled a bit like the ipod functionality.

[slim] SqueezeCenter 7.2 disconnects EVDO connection

2008-09-19 Thread eweller

I have a confusing problem. I use EVDO (a USB cellular modem)broadband
service, and I use ICS to connect to Sirius, etc. I have no router, but
this setup worked flawlessly for months with SC version 7.0.

Once I upgraded SC (now, version 7.2), I began experiencing
disconnects on my EVDO connection consistently every 13 to 14 minutes.

I narrowed down the cause of these disconnects to SC: If I turn off
the SC service my EVDO connection stays connected indefinitely;
however, once I start SC, I again lose connections every 13 to 14
minutes without fail. Very frustrating.

I have since uninstalled SC, then downgraded and reinstalled version
7.0- My connection problem has vanished.

I refuse to buy an expensive EVDO router (that is what Tech Support
told me to do)-I will be moving soon and won't need EVDO. I also don't
want to use an outdated version of SC.

I don't know much about networks (more now that I've had problems)-
Is there something I am missing? Does SC 7.2 change something in
regards to networking, or IP's or something?

I'm curious why the web ui is the only sensible way. Is it because your
SBC is slow to open long playlists? Otherwise it's only a few button
presses, especially if you scroll backwards in your playlist (Home -

[slim] SqueezeCenter fails to start after SP3-SP2 downgrade

2008-09-19 Thread schoen

ok, I have this weird situation where I had for some reason to downgrade
my Windows XP from service pack 3 to service pack 2 (Samsung scanner
drivers...)

Since the latest version (7.2) of Squeezecenter had been installed when
service pack 3 was installed, after the downgrade it didn't work
anymore.

Now I've tried to completely delete Squeezecenter, re-install and had
no success to ever get it to start up properly:
- Squeezetray says starting
- My firewall tells me it tries to connect to Squeezenetwork and the
update server but nothing else happens
- The web interface is not available, slimp3 and Duet can't connect
- I tried some command line logging without any success
- mysqld.exe reports ready for connections

Any hint on what else to check is really appreciated.

Re: [slim] Is It Possible to Play Music Directly from SqueezeCenter?

2008-09-19 Thread maggior

Yes...on all counts.

To use your server as a player, you can use something called
squeezeslave:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeSlave

This creates a player that can be controlled via the web interface (or
the controller).

You can also do remote streaming. On the web page for you
squeezecenter, click on help on the bottom left pane. You will see a
link there for remote streaming. It will tell you all you need to
know. To use it for local streaming (i.e. playing on your local
machine), just use the ip address of 127.0.0.1.

I use all of this functionality on a regular basis and I can say it
works very well.

Have fun!

I just want to be sure I am not installing something redundant and
unnecessary...

Re: [slim] SquuezeBox Classic Remote Control

2008-09-19 Thread roll - gybe

I have the harmony 880 upstairs and an MX downstairs. The harmony is
colorful and my wife pretty much knows how to use it. However, the MX
is much more straightforward.

The harmony is convoluted and complicated. They try to force you to
use activities which work great when you start from scratch, but if
you want to go from watching a DVD to listening to SB or something like
going from listening to SB to watching cable TV, you are pretty
screwed.

MX has a punchthrough functionality which means you can use your
volume buttons to control the amp when you have SB active. Very
intuitive.

The harmony only lets you do this when you are in activity mode. To
get into activity mode, an on/off macro goes off, so if everything
isn't off, then you are all messed up.

So... on the harmony, i reprogrammed certain functions with ir learn
to control things in normal device mode the way i want them
controlled. If I had known i would need to jump through these hoops, I
would have purchased a second MX.

Now my wife is pretty good with what I have programmed into the
harmony. however, she picks up the SB stock controller to adjust the
music. I think this is interesting b/c she hates all the remotes and
favors the universal. Also b/c she will only use what is easiest.

Another note - on the harmony, why are things like power toggle for
the SB on page 3 of the LCD? This is absurd for logitech to be so
moronic. I probably need to get back in there and do some more
reprogramming, but it is kind of like cleaning your closet...

[slim] Gapless Internet Access on SoftSqueeze

2008-09-19 Thread elgoodo

I've set up my SqueezeCenter so that it can be accessed over the
internet, and I've installed SoftSqueeze on my computer at work so that
I can listen to my collection on my home computer. However, it is
inconsistent in providing gapless playback when I am listening to OGG
files.

I've been monitoring the network traffic on my computer, and I've
noticed that if I am listening to MP3 files it looks like SqueezeCenter
starts sending the next file a few seconds before the current file
finishes playing. However, if I'm listening to OGG files,
SqueezeCenter usually does not start sending the next file until the
current file has stopped playing. This causes a rather large gap in
playback. Sometimes the SqueezeCenter does start sending the file
early, in which case playback is gapless.

Has anyone else come across this behavior? Is there anything that I
can do to fix it?

 Yes: you are right if there are two artists listed (using the ;

I must confess that I have not been consistent in how I tag things with
 more than 1 artist.

I recently made the transition to a FreeNAS NAS. When I run ACC from
the NAS, the 'Safety settings on this computer prohibit accessing a
data source on another domain' message appear. No matter what solution
I try it will not free me from this error. When I run ACC from the
Windows machine directly - as in copy the stuff from the NAS to a local

So this must be another Microsoft security issue but I though to post
this so maybe other have some use for it.

In the meantime I've started to do some bugfixing like some users have

I don't believe gapless playback is supported with softsqueeze. It is
using the Java mp3 decoder, which does not support gapless playback.

I'm not sure about ogg files though. The limiting factor here is the

Re: [slim] Boom arriving today...!

2008-09-19 Thread sc53

My Boom just joined 3 SB3 Classics this week and I absolutely LOVE it!
Try it naked before thinking about a sub; I don't think you will need
it. Its speakers are very well balanced and sound amazing for such a
small device. It's much smaller than I thought it would be and setup
was a complete breeze. I plugged it in, and it did the rest. I guess it
helped that my home network already has 3 SB3's up and running on it. My
only hitch was not figuring out that the little remote needed the
plastic wrap taken off the battery which was already installed inside
it. Remote wouldn't work (before I figured that step out) so I just
used one of my SB3 remotes. Controls the Boom and adds the number
keypad for entering your WPA/WEP passwords if you need them.
The Boom has renewed my interest in and enjoyment of all my
Squeezeboxes.

I'd suggest taking a look at the multiple library plugin that way you
can create two separate libraries, one for music and one for

can use that library and have all the SC capability at your disposal.
Though it might require bending some of the tags a little.

Because you should never be using it so it doesn't matter where it is.
You have an activity Squeezebox which turns on the SB3, and the amp,
switches the inputs correctly and turns everything else off. If you
then switch to the TV activity it turns off the SB, turns on the TV,
and flips the amp input. Why do you need the power toggle button? You
do need to be strict in not using any other remote alongisde the
harmony - the whole thing falls down if it can't reliably know what
state your devices are in. I put all my other remotes in a box a long
time ago!

If you can't get your head around activities (or if you want to use any
other remote alongside it) then the Harmony is entirely the wrong remote
for you. To me, any other remote (Pronto included) just seems too crude
precisely because they don't have activities and the dynamic state
transitions.

Re: [slim] Angry about Tranporter + SqueezeCenter

2008-09-19 Thread tygar

Thanks for the animated discussion in response to my original post.

A few points to take home:

(a) Some have implied that I am arguing against upgrades, or insisting
that upgrades be 100% error free. I am not suggesting that at all.
However, given the widespread frequency of this problem, I am
suggesting that *putting a one-sentence note (or even a simple link) on
the download page would address this issue*.

(b) Some have suggested that resetting the device is the obvious
answer. I don't think these users have actually encountered the
problem. Physically power cycling the Transporter apparently cures
the problem, only to have it recur when one tries to play another file.
Since most consumer products reset when fully power cycled (and the
Transporter, when afflicted with the upgrade of death seems to
reset), this is a frustrating problem to face as an end-user. Putting
a one-sentence note (or even a simple link) on the download page would
address this issue.

(c) Some have suggested that searching in the forums is a reasonable
solution. But, as I pointed out in my original post, the first hits I
got when I searched the forums for the solution had incorrect
information. *Putting a one-sentence note (or even a simple link) on
the download page would address this issue.*

(d) Some have suggested that searching the Wiki is the obvious
solution. I searched under combinations of terms such as Transporter,
hangs, 7.2, etc and didn't find a page describing this widespread bug.
It actually took me a while to realize that the Transporter didn't reset
when the power was cycled. (One good point is that anyone could change
the Wiki. However, I notice that a Logitech employee posted to this
thread, and the Wiki remains unchanged.) *Putting a one-sentence note
(or even a simple link) on the download page would address this
issue.*

(e) Some have suggested I should have called or written to SlimDevices
technical support for advice. However, I note that ccjj did exactly
this and did not get correct advice (over a period of two weeks).
Since the Transport upgrade bug is a widely reported bug, this suggests
to me that SlimDevices support was also not able to navigate their own
information sources. So, even if you completely reject my arguments,
how about making the materials useful for SlimDevices support?
*Putting a one-sentence note (or even a simple link) on the download
page would address this issue.*

(f) Some have suggested that I might be a dimwitted or technically
inept. Well, I have been a tenured computer science professor at CMU
and now at UC Berkeley, I have built large systems, I continue to build
large systems, and thought I was fairly technically adept. I was also
willing to sign my real name here. However, let's suppose I was just
an ordinary Joe with no special technical ability. Would that mean it
was OK to allow a serious bug to persist -- with no warning -- and no
useful advice from technical support? *Putting a one-sentence note (or
even a simple link) on the download page would address this issue.*

(g) If I were czar, I would solve this problem by including an
automatic reset during the upgrade process, and forcing users to
re-enter system passwords. But since I am not czar, I wish to once
again make the following, constructive suggestion: *Putting a
one-sentence note (or even a simple link) on the download page would
address this issue.*

To summarize: *Putting a one-sentence note (or even a simple link) on
the download page would address this issue.*

Is this really so much to ask?

what the SBC should have been like, fast, responsive and easy to use.

However one thing is really annoying me and that is that I keep

For me this ruins the whole experience, in my mind it would be better

Nothing like answering my own question. In the setup under iTunes there
is this parameter

ITUNES RELOAD INTERVAL
When your iTunes Music Library changes SlimServer will automatically
import the library information. You can specify the minimum amount of

iTunes Music Library again. A value of zero disables the reload.

Re: [slim] SquuezeBox Classic Remote Control

2008-09-19 Thread Chris Laplante
I've also never had any luck with activities... I think the concept
would work if the real remote had single buttons for things, but when
it has say an HDMI button, that you use to cycle thru the 4 HDMI
ports on my TV it is constantly getting it wrong, or turning off the
TV or some nonsense. My original remote has no HDMI 1 button, so there
is no way activities would ever know what input the TV is on.

I got around the needing to be in the right context (say TV or Cable
box) to use the right volume etc, but using the IR learn function. I
taught it the the volume IR code for my cable box by using the TV's
original remote. That way no mater what context I am in the volume
controls the TV. I know their is supposed to be some other way, but I
gave up and did it the hard way after hours of futzing.

You can change what page things are on in the LCD, you can push them
up and down as needed so the important things are on the first page.

So... on the harmony, i reprogrammed certain functions with ir learn
to control things in normal device mode the way i want them
 controlled.

You're doing it wrong. Forget the device button even exists, do
everything via activities and your life will be _much_ easier.

Another note - on the harmony, why are things like power toggle for
the SB on page 3 of the LCD?

Maybe it could be parted out (excluding the parts that make it a demo)?

Sean: Is the display in the demo the same as a display in a standard
SB3? Some folks on the forum are looking for a replacement display.

If not parted out, I vote for Semtex, Detcord, or shotgun to destroy

Re: [slim] SquuezeBox Classic Remote Control

2008-09-19 Thread stuart

I'm not sure how well my threading is working w.r.t. this thread. As I
can't see this one from the beginning. Regardless, if the original
poster is into hacking, there is the JP1 project alternative. You can
buy certain types of remotes (google jp1 remotes) for as little at
$10US (radshack has a sale right now (don't bother asking the associate
questions about JP1)), build or buy the appropriate JP1 programmer /
cable and program the codes for (probably) all your stuff. Including any
*known* code that your current remotes do not produce (like all off
or switch to input #1).

I think you can find SB1,2,3 codes here (according to the post):
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=filefile_id=3200

Note, there's a lot of work and thinking involved with this approach.
There's a reason a hormony cost 10x as much as one of these things.

Re: [slim] eBay Warning - demo units

2008-09-19 Thread stuart

I looked it up, it's more along the lines of taking apart the demo unit
for parts. A VFD, especially a graphic VFD, is expensive. I, for one,
would probably buy it if the price were right.

This is just conjecture, but if I were asked to design an SB demo unit
the 10BaseT port would be the first thing I would entirely remove. That
would make it fairly obvious to anyone that it can not be used as a
network music client. Even the most disinterested ebay seller could
probably answer if a unit they were selling had a network port. And if
not by description, a picture of the SB's back side would tell all.

(...Hind site is a great thing isn't it?)

Re: [slim] eBay Warning - demo units

2008-09-19 Thread stuart

Apologies, I see now you are thinking of using the demo unit as a 2nd
display. A real (audio broken) unit could possibly be put into sync
mode w/a working unit and be used as a display only. I would be
surprised if the demo had enough of the original parts or programming to
do the same. A good thought though.

I'm definitely looking into crashes although I think I'm going to have
a find a way to get hold of crash logs from you guys.

Also for some reason LastFM album art doesn't come up

How can I reproduce this locally? I don't use LastFM with my

and track information doesn't change of the original song although the
time progress bar does seem to be correct.

Not sure what you mean - do you mean when the track changes, the track
name at the top of the screen doesn't update?

It would also be great if on playing a playlist there were options to
play all and to play shuffled a bit like the ipod functionality.

Already on the todo list!

if it defaulted to add to playlist with the secondary option to be play

It annoys me too and I'm already working on the way you add tracks to
the current playlist, using a touch and hold gesture instead of the
button on the right - hopefully this will make it into the next beta
release over the weekend as I'm really keen to get feedback on this.

You can change player name in the settings for that player in the web

Duet uses DHCP if it is available, you'll only see static/self-assign

WEP encryption failure.

d60pdp, is DHCP enabled on your D-link?

Love my squeezebox. Just love it.

Browsing through the settings after installing SqueezeCenter 7.2 I
noticed under Player-Audio-Bitrate_Limiting there is a Note: You do
not appear to have LAME installed.

But I do have LAME installed, I use it with EAC for ripping/burning.
How can I get SC to find LAME?

Re: [slim] No Connection to Internet Radio

2008-09-19 Thread ds2021

90% of the time, I listen to internet radio on my SB's. Said it before,
will say it again: internet radio is only as good as the stream.

The error that you describe suggests a stream error, and not a SC or SB
error. To narrow down the possibilities try opening the station's stream
in your browser or desktop player. If the problem is the same, the
stream is not ... streaming. Bandwidth is often an issue for popular
underfunded stations.

Re: [slim] Keep Losing Connection to SlimServer

2008-09-19 Thread ds2021

With the SB right in front of the router, and assuming a very high
signal quality, are you still getting these problems? Since the SB is
so close now, is it reasonable to say that if you wire (ethernet) the
two together, the problem stops?

Assuming the answers to the above are yes, my first suspicion would be
the router. Routers are amazingly unreliable, and I saw this problem
frequently before switching to pre-N (they seem to call them N now, but
there is no official N standard as far as I am aware) routers. The
problem was especially aggravated when moving into a house with other
80211.g neighbours. Again, N helped solve this.

The routers that I presently have are a Linksys 310N and a DLink 655.
