[slim] Myriad problems since upgrading to windows 7. Coinicidence or not?
Upgraded to Windows 7 a few days ago and now I have so many problems with my Squeezebox setup it is untrue. My setup is laptop running squeezebox server, two external harddrives connected, squeezebox in living room and squeezebox radio in bedroom. First problem I noticed is that my squeezebox started losing connection and then regaining it in the living room. It would stay connected for about a minute, then lose it, then gain it again. This just kept happening and made playing music impossible. Then my squeezebox server refused to connect to mysqueezebox.com making my squeezebox radio completely redundant. Can anyone say whether this is likely to be a windows 7 issue or if something else is going on? -- Cockeye Cockeye's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22798 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76860 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Volume Levelling
Hi all, Just caught up with this discussion I started some time ago. My, how time gets away from you!!! Anyway, for some strange reason, over the Easter break I had the strange compulsion to apply ReplayGain tags to all 95000 MP3s I own, for the purpose of playing them in Squeezecentre without having too much of a volume shift. Recently, I have just been playing a random mix stream from the server via FooBar2000 on my media center PC, but of course it lacks the front end functionality that SoftSqueeze has, and if I need to skip a track in a hurry (like if the kids are around and swearing turns up in a song) I have to run to the server and skip the track, which can take up to 30 seconds to appear on Foobar. So it's ok, but not ideal. So I succumbed and went to RG, as applied in Foobar. Now, as far as I can tell, there is no real straight-forward documentation that I have found that tells me exactly what all the settings for RG are and how to apply them in FooBar, so I took the plunge anyway. During testing today, I found that Loose Booty by Funkadelic was set to -8db and barely audible, Breed by Nirvana was set to -13db and was drawfed in sound by Watch The Sunrise by Big Star, the 12-string acoustics in the song could almost be heard 2 streets away from here. It just doesn't work. Yes I'm having another bad experience with it. Is there a clear, straight-forward way to get this to work???Lots of people say it's perfect. So what am I not doing? All I did was Remove ReplayGain tags to start with, and then Scan per-track, then rescanned the entire library again in Squeezeserver (incidentally that last step in itself took 7 hours!!!) Thanx so far for all your collective feedback. -- Jippers Jippers's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31599 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72031 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Phil Leigh;530654 Wrote: If you playback via SBS and use SmartGain then you won't get the massive jumps in level you are experiencing. Yep, I think you've forgotten the step of turning on smart gain within SbS. The replaygain tags do nothing if the player isn't told to use them. This is even true within foobar2000 (where there is a setting to use either track or album gain). Go into SbS, then SETTINGS, then PLAYER tab, then select AUDIO, then VOLUME ADJ/REPLAYGAIN. I think you need to do this for each of your players. The idea behind smartgain is that it will use track gain volume adj when playing random mixes and album gain volume adj when playing entire albums. edit: p.s. there are not really any setting you need for adding the tags with foobar2000. It may need to know whether you want both album and track tags (which you do). Re: [slim] What else does VortexBox need?
I somehow messed up my Vortexbox installation the other day. Streaming to a SB2 worked, but playback via Vortexbox Player did not. I am familiar with Linux command line after using various distributions for many years, but I am certainly not an expert in any way. I managed to fix the problem, but during my search for the cause I wished there was a simple way to restore the installation to a factory default, a script that is run from the system menu in the web interface. I believe an ordinary user would see this as an important safety switch. When other family members also play music this way it is very embarrassing to have a non-working system and not being able to fix it quickly. A more advanced wish for me would be to have BrutefirDRC preinstalled and working on Vortexbox with an interface for (basic) operation with the graphic squeezeboxes and VB player -- OGS SB2 (mod) - Tact RCS 2.0 - Rotel RB-1060 (mod) - Tannoy Sensys DC1 OGS's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32981 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76870 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Exactly. No difference in individual rip quality, just better overall QA. If something _does_ go wrong, it's another tool that can help you detect the problem. Without AccurteRip, and without ripping logs that can be examined after a rip, you're pretty much flying blind. AccurateRip has another important use, too, which is best employed by dbpoweramp - it allows you rip first in burst mode, which can be lightning fast. If the AccurateRip results indicate that the rip is good, you're done. If not, then secure mode ripping, where multiple rips of each disk sector are compared, is the fall back and next best thing, but much slower. So it's also a productivity tool that can greatly speed up the ripping of your library. dbpoweramp automates the process and will try burst mode first, then fall back to secure mode if there's no match in the database. With EAC it's a manual process. You can rip first in burst mode, but you have to look at the rip log yourself and then change the drive options and rip the CD a second time in secure mode if necessary. It's still faster than using secure mode all the time. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76870 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Bullitdodger;530656 Wrote: This worked fine, but now I can't add new music? You mean new music is not being picked up by a scan? Should this be done every time I wish to add music? In an ideal world, no, that would be a pain in the butt, wouldn't it. Unix has something called a 'umask' which will help you. Very very basic Unix permissions are just numbers. I'll cover the important part here and skip the stuff about 'sticky bits' and such. You have 3 groups of permissions: owner, group and world. Each group has read, write and execute. So you can grant owner and no one else the permissions to write to a file, but allow anyone to read it. That's what chmod does: it changes those permissions, allowing the SBS 'user' to be able to read your files. In this case, though, you want to change the defaults, which may be too strict for your purposes. Ie, when you add a file, it gets a default setting which only gives you the access to read the file and prohibits SBS from doing it. This is done with 'umask's. In reality, for no sane reason, the default is to be wide open readable/writeable to everyone. That's of course bad. A umask strips permissions on that default. So a umask of '022' leaves the first set of permissions (owner) alone since it has a zero. The 2's strip the write permission away from the group and world, which is what you want. So... how to force those depends on how you're loading music. If you're using Samba, then there is a setting for that. If you're using a shell (aka command line) you can set it in the shell startup script (which script? depends on which shell!). If you're using a GUI it may be a bit trickier, depending which GUI and what method you're using. So more information on how you're moving files would help. (If you're using a command line, just type 'umask 022' before copying, but adding it to the shell startup would mean you'd have less to do long run.) -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75662 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Related to my previous post, I noticed this little detail in the 7.5.0 changelog: #3932 - (Transporter / Boom) Add discrete ir codes for power_on, power_off, digital_inputs and line_in Two questions: Does this allow to select a digital input (or at least the digital input selection menu itself) directly? Will these commands be added to the Harmony database, or can they be added manally in some way? A positive answer on either - or hopefully both - would make things a lot simpler for me and I suspect a bunch of other people using the digital inputs of the Transporter. -- furonfour 'Last.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/wostu) - Chaos is the mother of all creation. furonfour's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17114 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67769 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What else does VortexBox need?
bobschneider;530854 Wrote: I'd like some type of Linux front end like KDE. Maybe there's something like that buried in there for us non experts, but I haven't been able to find it. I'm really happy with my VortexBox overall (purchased from the website), but I had it make MP4 copies of all my flacs, and now that I don't need them any more I can't find a way to delete those files or that directory. I can see it in Windows 7 and in OS X, but when I try to delete it I get a not authorized message. And I can't find it in text mode when I hook up a keyboard and monitor to my VoretexBox. Alternatively, just put an option in the web browser front end to delete MP4 files. There's an option for that for MP3s, but not for MP4s. You need to click on files - music - mp4 to delete the files. Re: [slim] What else does VortexBox need?
Wow, this thread has gone over an Accuraterip discussion thread. I think it is possible to use Accuraterip on VortexBox but it would require licensing fees etc. This is probably why it has never been used on Linux software. cdpandora has been used by very successfully by audiophiles world wide for years with good results. So I'm confident we are using the best available ripping solution for Linux. That being said if somebody can find me some Accuraterip code that runs nativity on Linux I would be happy to include it. Lets move on to some other features people want. -- agillis rip, tag, get cover art All you do is insert the CD! http://vortexbox.org agillis Lead Developer VortexBox agillis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21140 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76870 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Very well indeed, in fact. We just needed to wait until version 7.5 of the Squeezebox Server software came out to implement it. That said, I'm not sure why the changes were not yet made to the publicly availble Transporter device in the Harmony database. I'll check in on that in the morning and make sure it's fixed ASAP. The improved functionality is super handy when using the Transporter as a DAC. I'll be sure to not only have the commands added, but the inputs themselves defined so that you'll be able to select them during the activity setup process in the Harmony software. -- Keymaster Keymaster's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30281 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67769 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

There are some sellers out there who either intentionally or accidentally try to sell SB1s as SB2s.
