[slim] Myriad problems since upgrading to windows 7. Coinicidence or not?

2010-04-06 Thread Cockeye

Upgraded to Windows 7 a few days ago and now I have so many problems
with my Squeezebox setup it is untrue.

My setup is laptop running squeezebox server, two external harddrives
connected, squeezebox in living room and squeezebox radio in bedroom.

First problem I noticed is that my squeezebox started losing connection
and then regaining it in the living room. It would stay connected for
about a minute, then lose it, then gain it again. This just kept
happening and made playing music impossible.

Then my squeezebox server refused to connect to mysqueezebox.com making
my squeezebox radio completely redundant.

Can anyone say whether this is likely to be a windows 7 issue or if
something else is going on?

Issues aplenty since upgrading to 7. My last incremental scan for
instance brought up ZERO artists. Had to do a full scan.
Had a XP setup for years running without a problem.

[slim] server / web interface confused between players

Sometimes when using the web interface I am supposed to be controlling

Very confusing and awful for the person in the other room.

Could it be because the machine that is now called Bedroom used to be

This is a common problem in the web interface. If you have the
Settings page open in another window it's best to close it. That may
help, but probably won't completely eliminate the problem.

[slim] SqueezePlay speed change 44.1/48 KHz FLACs MusicIP/SpiceFly Mix

2010-04-06 Thread Nikhil

I have a few 48 KHz FLAC files (mostly 16 bit and a few 24 bit) ripped
from DVDs interspersed with my largely 44.1 KHz/16bit CD ripped FLAC
library. Listening with SqueezePlay (7.4r7538M on Mac OS 10.6.2) to a
MusicIP/Spicefly Mix the speed sometimes goes haywire when it switches
between a 48 KHz and 44.1 KHz track or vice versa. Metadata shows the
correct bit depth and sample rate for the files.

Server details are:
Version: 7.4.2 - r30215 @ Fri Feb 19 15:21:27 PST 2010
Operating system: Debian - EN - utf8
Platform Architecture: i686-linux
Perl Version: 5.10.0 - i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.83-0ubuntu3

Haven't noticed this behavior behavior before on SqueezePlay with
normal random mixes or on my trusty old SB2. Is it something to do with
the plugins? Is this a known bug?

Re: [slim] Volume Levelling

2010-04-06 Thread Jippers

Hi all,

Just caught up with this discussion I started some time ago. My, how
time gets away from you!!!

Anyway, for some strange reason, over the Easter break I had the
strange compulsion to apply ReplayGain tags to all 95000 MP3s I own,
for the purpose of playing them in Squeezecentre without having too
much of a volume shift.

Recently, I have just been playing a random mix stream from the server
via FooBar2000 on my media center PC, but of course it lacks the front
end functionality that SoftSqueeze has, and if I need to skip a track
in a hurry (like if the kids are around and swearing turns up in a
song) I have to run to the server and skip the track, which can take up
to 30 seconds to appear on Foobar. So it's ok, but not ideal.

So I succumbed and went to RG, as applied in Foobar. Now, as far as I
can tell, there is no real straight-forward documentation that I have
found that tells me exactly what all the settings for RG are and how to
apply them in FooBar, so I took the plunge anyway.

During testing today, I found that Loose Booty by Funkadelic was set
to -8db and barely audible, Breed by Nirvana was set to -13db and was
drawfed in sound by Watch The Sunrise by Big Star, the 12-string
acoustics in the song could almost be heard 2 streets away from here.

It just doesn't work. Yes I'm having another bad experience with it.
Is there a clear, straight-forward way to get this to work???Lots of
people say it's perfect. So what am I not doing? All I did was
Remove ReplayGain tags to start with, and then Scan per-track, then
rescanned the entire library again in Squeezeserver (incidentally that
last step in itself took 7 hours!!!)

Thanx so far for all your collective feedback.

Phil Leigh;530654 Wrote:

Yep, I think you've forgotten the step of turning on smart gain within
SbS. The replaygain tags do nothing if the player isn't told to use
them. This is even true within foobar2000 (where there is a setting to
use either track or album gain).

Go into SbS, then SETTINGS, then PLAYER tab, then select AUDIO, then
VOLUME ADJ/REPLAYGAIN. I think you need to do this for each of your
players.

The idea behind smartgain is that it will use track gain volume adj
when playing random mixes and album gain volume adj when playing entire
albums.

edit: p.s. there are not really any setting you need for adding the
tags with foobar2000. It may need to know whether you want both album
and track tags (which you do). Otherwise, there are no other options.

Sound is deactived by default. That's because of wrong settings in the

Yes. Logitech uses a monkey-rigged DNS system that attempts to do a
type of low tech geo targeting to direct you to the 'nearest'
datacenter. If you run your own DNS server, you can hijack the lookups
for the 'mysqueezebox.com' zone and point 'www.mysqueezebox.com' and
'mysqueezebox.com' to whichever datacenter you prefer. I imagine that
it could also be done on some routers by intercepting and redirecting
the IP address.

Good news. They may ask you to do a few things or talk you through some
instructions. Give them a chance and allow them to follow the flowchart.
If the knob didn't move freely when it lost the connection it would have
been known bad for sure. But since it does, there are probably some
things to try and/or look at real quick before knowing for sure that it
needs to go back. It just isn't supposed to be making noise all the time
or vibrating on its own.

Re: [slim] What else does VortexBox need?

2010-04-06 Thread OGS

I somehow messed up my Vortexbox installation the other day. Streaming
to a SB2 worked, but playback via Vortexbox Player did not. I am
familiar with Linux command line after using various distributions for
many years, but I am certainly not an expert in any way.

I managed to fix the problem, but during my search for the cause I
wished there was a simple way to restore the installation to a factory
default, a script that is run from the system menu in the web
interface. I believe an ordinary user would see this as an important
safety switch. When other family members also play music this way it
is very embarrassing to have a non-working system and not being able to
fix it quickly.

A more advanced wish for me would be to have BrutefirDRC preinstalled
and working on Vortexbox with an interface for (basic) operation with
the graphic squeezeboxes and VB player

AccurateRip with both EAC and dbPowerAmp. AccurateRip compares your

Exactly. No difference in individual rip quality, just better overall
QA. If something _does_ go wrong, it's another tool that can help you
detect the problem. Without AccurteRip, and without ripping logs that
can be examined after a rip, you're pretty much flying blind.

AccurateRip has another important use, too, which is best employed by
dbpoweramp - it allows you rip first in burst mode, which can be
lightning fast. If the AccurateRip results indicate that the rip is
good, you're done. If not, then secure mode ripping, where multiple
rips of each disk sector are compared, is the fall back and next best
thing, but much slower. So it's also a productivity tool that can
greatly speed up the ripping of your library. dbpoweramp automates the
process and will try burst mode first, then fall back to secure mode if
there's no match in the database. With EAC it's a manual process. You
can rip first in burst mode, but you have to look at the rip log
yourself and then change the drive options and rip the CD a second time
in secure mode if necessary. It's still faster than using secure mode
all the time.

 AccurateRip.

AccurateRip is currently only working with Windows or MAC based ripping
programs. Vortexbox is Linux based (thank the stars). Also AccurateRip
is not a program or advanced ripping program, it is only a means to
compare other rips which could in fact be bad rips. The more rips that
match the less likely this is and a good match eliminates the need for
a second pass to verify the first rip which speeds up ripping.

Other then that, it is not some magical program IE it is a feature. It
is also no better or more accurate then any ripper that does multiple
passes to make sure of the accuracy of the data that is ripped, it can
just be faster if you choose to select that setting.

But of course nobody is stopping anybody from installing Wine and
running dBpowerAmp on your Vortexbox server. Also nothing is stopping
anybody from using a Mac or Windurs machine to AccurateRip CDs then
move the FLAC files over to Vortexbox across the Network.

[slim] Napster Performance

2010-04-06 Thread browellm

I've been having terrible problems with Napster over the past few days.
If I tee up an album, I get one or two songs, then the dreaded timed
out waiting for data messages begin.

I've tried accessing through my local SBS instance, as well as
mysqueezebox.comc - same problems.

Is this related to recent MySB problems, and is anyone else based in
the UK having Napster issues.

I wondered if it might be my ISP, but all my other browsing and d/l's
run fine.

Any thoughts or more advanced troubleshooting I can do? I'm also
noticing my controller having problems attaching to mySB.com

If one goes to dBpowerAmp, it is Illustrate. And from that website:
illustrate are innovators in the field of audio, over the years
Illustrate have been the worlds 1st to:

Implement an online ripping accuracy database: AccurateRip, self

Upload m4a audio files to the Apple iPod (on Windows),
Audio Player to offer rating abilities in a Music Collection,
Independent Windows implementation of Apple Lossless encoder, 24 bit

(My rule is that before I - an amateur - try to work with the CLI, I

I'd like some type of Linux front end like KDE. Maybe there's something
like that buried in there for us non experts, but I haven't been able to
find it. I'm really happy with my VortexBox overall (purchased from the
website), but I had it make MP4 copies of all my flacs, and now that I
don't need them any more I can't find a way to delete those files or
that directory. I can see it in Windows 7 and in OS X, but when I try
to delete it I get a not authorized message. And I can't find it in
text mode when I hook up a keyboard and monitor to my VoretexBox.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Unbuntu not recognising music folder

2010-04-06 Thread united59

I'm no expert, but I think with the following command, it should work:

sudo chmod -R 777 /home/tony/music

It's probably a rather crude command, probably give out more
permissions than necessary, it says someting that anybody can do
anything (read, write, delete).

(My rule is that before I - an amateur - try to work with the CLI, I
always make a new fresh backup copy of the entire music collection).

True, but at that site, it does say these rippers currently can use
accuraterip:

* dBpoweramp,
* Exact Audio Copy
* Rip (Apple MAC),
* XLD (Apple MAC),
* Songbook (Apple MAC)

I suspect the cost of licensing is a function of what the software
charges its own users. Keep in mind that I assume that it is in
Spoon's (Illustrate) best interest to encourage widespread use as the
more users, the more valuable the database (more unique disks and more
unique rips of disks)

That just isn't true. I've come across several disc that would rip with
the same error multiple times, with no indication from the drive/drives
that there was an error and the end result having an audible click in
the file.

Without AccurateRip those bad rips would be lurking in my collection
waiting to irritate me. AccurateRip instantly flagged those badly
ripped tracks as suspect.

Also AccurateRip can really help when you have a disc right on the
limits of rippability. If you have a disc where you get different
checksums on subsequent rips, without AR you have to keep ripping until
you get the same checksum a decent number of times for each track. With
AC, even with these dodgy discs you only need to wait for the first rip
for each track that matches AR.

Bullitdodger;530656 Wrote:
This worked fine, but now I can't add new music?

You mean new music is not being picked up by a scan?

Should this be done every time I wish to add music?

In an ideal world, no, that would be a pain in the butt, wouldn't it.

Unix has something called a 'umask' which will help you.

Very very basic Unix permissions are just numbers. I'll cover the
important part here and skip the stuff about 'sticky bits' and such.

You have 3 groups of permissions: owner, group and world. Each group
has read, write and execute. So you can grant owner and no one else
the permissions to write to a file, but allow anyone to read it.
That's what chmod does: it changes those permissions, allowing the SBS
'user' to be able to read your files.

In this case, though, you want to change the defaults, which may be too
strict for your purposes. Ie, when you add a file, it gets a default
setting which only gives you the access to read the file and prohibits
SBS from doing it.

This is done with 'umask's. In reality, for no sane reason, the
default is to be wide open readable/writeable to everyone. That's of
course bad. A umask strips permissions on that default. So a umask of
'022' leaves the first set of permissions (owner) alone since it has a
zero. The 2's strip the write permission away from the group and
world, which is what you want.

So... how to force those depends on how you're loading music. If
you're using Samba, then there is a setting for that. If you're using
a shell (aka command line) you can set it in the shell startup script
(which script? depends on which shell!). If you're using a GUI it may
be a bit trickier, depending which GUI and what method you're using.

So more information on how you're moving files would help.

(If you're using a command line, just type 'umask 022' before copying,
but adding it to the shell startup would mean you'd have less to do
long run.)

Related to my previous post, I noticed this little detail in the 7.5.0
changelog:

#3932 - (Transporter / Boom) Add discrete ir codes for power_on,
 power_off, digital_inputs and line_in

Two questions:

Does this allow to select a digital input (or at least the digital
input selection menu itself) directly?

Will these commands be added to the Harmony database, or can they be
added manally in some way?

A positive answer on either - or hopefully both - would make things a
lot simpler for me and I suspect a bunch of other people using the
digital inputs of the Transporter.

Wow, this thread has gone over an Accuraterip discussion thread.

I think it is possible to use Accuraterip on VortexBox but it would
require licensing fees etc. This is probably why it has never been used
on Linux software.

cdpandora has been used by very successfully by audiophiles world wide
for years with good results. So I'm confident we are using the best
available ripping solution for Linux.

That being said if somebody can find me some Accuraterip code that runs
nativity on Linux I would be happy to include it.

Lets move on to some other features people want.

1- Yes :)

2- Yes :)

I was a part of the team that got this done. The commands do work.
Very well indeed, in fact. We just needed to wait until version 7.5 of
the Squeezebox Server software came out to implement it.

That said, I'm not sure why the changes were not yet made to the
publicly availble Transporter device in the Harmony database. I'll
check in on that in the morning and make sure it's fixed ASAP.

The improved functionality is super handy when using the Transporter as
a DAC. I'll be sure to not only have the commands added, but the inputs
themselves defined so that you'll be able to select them during the
activity setup process in the Harmony software.
