Re: [slim] Suggestions for Squeezebox player replacement for a non-techie longtime SB user
I am not a techie. Have no Linux knowledge at all. Dont have time to tinker, but figured Id at least give a raspberry pi a shot while I own a workable SB Touch. After getting over the initial fear I bought a kit with a case, and located the instructions on this site for how to load squeezelite. I cant recall if it worked flawlessly the first time I turned it on, but I did get it to work. In the past 2-3 years since I bought it I may have have to reboot it twice. It works flawlessly. As for multi-room, I decided to ditch the synchronized multi-SB setup I used to have and started buying Denon HEOS speakers and a Marantz HEOS-enabled network streamer. I was already going to upgrade my stereo so that money was going to be spent anyway. Synchronization is much better than my old multi-SB network of players. The lesson here is dont rule out the Pi if you cant find something else that fits your needs. The hardest part, frankly, is getting over the fear factor that youre going to spend months having to figure out how to make it work when it really doesnt take that long once you commit to it. Re: [slim] HEOS By Denon?
I do. I bought a Marantz AVR three years ago in large part because of integrated HEOS. I have HEOS wireless speakers in several rooms in addition to my stereo equipment. Multi room sync works well, and the sound is very good. I still have my raspberry pi running squeezelite and connected to a Marantz ND8006 network streamer/CD player via Coax and optical inputs (no reason to have both, I just did it to see if there was any difference...there isnÂt). The HEOS software is stable. I suspect most folks who have problems with it have network issues. I have a siriusxm subscription as well as Amazon UltraHD, the latter of which streams a minimum of standard FLAC bitrates up to 192/24. I have really good WiFi now, download speeds of 200mbs minimum, so the streams are trouble free (I had 50mbs when I first subscribed to Amazon UltraHD, and had frequent issues). The biggest negative is that the HEOS application is extremely basic. Many of the features available on the Amazon UltraHD and Sirius apps are unavailable through HEOS. I still use LMS quite a bit, and frequently stream throughout the house through HEOS. ItÂs a little awkward, as I have to open HEOS first and choose the digital input from my ND8006, then open iPeng to start LMS. I still have my Touch, too, which is hooked up to my family room Marantz system via analog, using the Touch DAC. IÂve not tried any sort of blind A/B comparison between the ND8006 DAC through which I run my Pi (and listen in the family room via HEOS) and the Touch, but I think the Marantz sounds a little better. ThatÂs a lot I tried to share in one post. If you have other questions let me know. Im down to one SB Touch and a Raspberry Pi. Mac Mini as a server (OS X Catalina). iPeng is my controller of choice. It's good to know Roon is out there should LMS no longer have community support, but $499 is steep. Particularly if it closes up shop like SB did (as a commercial venture, at least). [slim] Taking the plunge: Need advice on homemade SB

Networking basics were a challenge, as well as troubleshooting other issues as they came up. I figured them out, though, so I'm not a complete technical idiot. I introduce myself that way so when seeking advice, you understand why I don't understand most of the threads in the various developer forums dealing with the latest designs folks are experimenting with these days. I have a need, however, and am willing to invest a little time since this isn't an urgent need. I'm looking to add a SB to my study. I'd be happy with a Radio-like device, although I don't need the screen. I will likely use small amplified speakers (haven't settled on those yet, so I could use advice there as well), and they can be wired or wireless. I need the device to be both WiFi and Ethernet capable. I have had connectivity issues in the past with this particular room, variously trying both power line and wifi without consistent success. I anticipate the need to experiment with both before I settle on one. I mainly stream from my local library, although on occasion I'll use one of the free services like Pandora. Sync is very important to me, as I frequently play the same music on multiple devices. Hope I covered all the important stuff. Re: [slim] Olive One - any downsides?
Thanks for the update, bibendum. I've been following the comments on their website and noticed the same things you've observed. The manufacturing issues you've mentioned make sense...once you switch to overseas factories it is really tough to stay on top of build quality, particularly if you don't have experience in the country of manufacture. I'm hoping Olive gets past this and finally start building some momentum. They really need to prioritize such basic functionality as device sync (I guess they have to get to the point where they can ship more than one unit per customer first) before they can move on to some of the more advanced capabilities we enjoy with our SBs. I'm now following several user forums for devices that *might* be suitable replacements for my SBs, should I need to go that route. It is simply amazing how not one of them contain the entire package at a similar price point...primarily deficiencies on the software side. Maybe, just maybe, some commercial outfit will negotiate a licensing deal with Logitech and use LMS as the basis for another product. Well, I bet they don't feel any better about the way things turned out than you do. And do we really know how things would have worked out had Logitech not bought Slim? Who knows what their (Slim's) financial viability might have been? Re: [slim] Olive One - any downsides?
Still monitoring Communication has been awful. They haven't updated their Facebook page (where they encourage folks to go for news) since March. If you check out the Olive One user forum, you'll see a lot of folks asking for updates on delivery. Many of these folks contributed to the original Kickstarter campaign back in 2011. It leads one to believe that Olive has been having problems on the manufacturing end. That surprises me given that Olive is an established company. The good news, however, is that some units appear to be getting delivered. A few user reviews have been posted, although not enough detail to get a good feel for the product's capabilities. Assuming these are legitimate users, at least they aren't encountering setup issues. Checking out the feature requests, it appears that syncing multiple devices is still on the drawing board. I think the software is pretty rudimentary (compared to LMS and it's suite of plug-ins). This is based on several questions I posted on the Facebook page about features I consider must haves for any device I adopt. The company at least is asking for input on future development, so if they ever get this thing off the ground, maybe they'll do a better job on that front than I've seen with Sonos. Re: [slim] Need recommendations for music subscriber service
Well, I was able to get Pandora to work again using the web interface instead of trying to get it going through my remote. Not sure what the issue was, but I'm going to set up a few Favorites and see if that works better. I'm not thrilled with the sound quality at 128k (one of my must-haves). I suppose I can pay for the subscription and get better quality, although that only gets me to 192k. Of more importance is getting rid of the commercials. Unlike the previous poster, I am getting them every 4-5 songs. Erland, I do have OSX and iPeng using iOS7, so that won't be an issue once I settle on a service I like. Qobuz looks to be much more expensive than the other services, even if I can figure out how to get it in the US. Cost needs to be less than $10/month for me to feel it's worth it. I'm leaning towards Pandora One. At $4.99/month it probably fits most of my needs at a wallet-friendly price, and I already have a few stations set up through the free account I've had for years. Truth be told, 192k is probably good enough sound quality, particularly since most of our listening will be outside by the pool. Thanks for the ideas so far. [slim] Need recommendations for music subscriber service
The kids are home from college, and I'm tired of hearing them play music through their iPhone and bluetooth speakers when we're together at home. The problem seems to be that I'm not subscribed to a music service. I had the free version of Pandora (which I rarely used), but that doesn't appear to be supported any longer. I've almost stepped up and paid for, at various times, MOG, Pandora's premium service, Spotify, and probably a number of others whose names escape me at the moment. The thing that has kept me from pulling the trigger is that each one seemed to have some missing piece that made it not worthwhile for me to pay for it. So, I'm seeking the best solution, with the following must-haves: Works with my SB3s, Duet and Touch Must be able to sync on multiple devices Needs to have a large library, mostly mainstream pop, country, classic rock, etc., although for me I like to stray from the hits. Must sound good on my mid-fi system...I don't need lossless, but I don't want 128k, either. Needs to still be able to do all of this a year from now. Like-to-haves: Smart Mix compatible Ickstream compatible (maybe they'll let me start testing it if I get the right service!) I think I've covered everything. I'm hoping to get some good suggestions before everyone shows up for the Memorial Day weekend! Thanks, GeeJay 2-SB3s, 1-Duet, 1-Touch...and an iPeng convert. Re: [slim] Syncing wired SB3 with Powerline Homeplug SB3
My own experience with powerline adapters is mixed. Your success will depend on the wiring in your house. They tend to work well if the sending and receiving devices are on the same circuit, but may not work as well otherwise. I also found that I had buffering problems if someone was running other appliances in the house that pulled a lot of power. If my wife was on the treadmill while I was trying to listen to music, forget about the music for awhile! I still use my netgear adapters successfully for other network applications, but I eventually gave up on them as a consistently reliable means of streaming music. But as I said at the outset, your experience may be quite different since everyone's operating environment is unique. You might start off as I did, and purchase a few used adapters off the Internet. If they work for you, invest in new ones and keep the used ones as backups. Re: [slim] Why shouldn't I jump ship to Sonos?
You say your fourth priority is SuperDateTime. That's a plug-in I use as well, and I've not read that Sonos has anything like it. High on my list, probably #2 after multi-room sync, is ratings support of random dynamic playlists. I have researched that, and Sonos doesn't have it. For me at least, it's an easier decision to wait and see what develops. If the community-driven alternative doesn't pan out, then Olive One might, and the latter sounds like it could be at least as good as Sonos. If online services were high on my priority list, I'd likely be feeling a bit more anxious. As it is, I'm satisfied to wait and see what Olive and the SB community offers up in the coming months. [slim] Thinking ahead: What alternatives exist for rating my music?
One of my biggest must haves once I am finally forced to replace my SBs and LMS is the ability to rate tracks. I find myself very dependent on Erland's suite of plug-ins for this purpose. I rate tracks, use filters to create playlists that weight heavily towards highly rated tracks, and really like the feature that automatically rates new tunes and increases/decreases ratings when tracks are played or skipped. Is there an alternative I can consider switching to now that can provide me with similar functionality? How can I best preserve my ratings such that when the SB world finally goes dark I don't have to start over from scratch? I used to import/export ratings from/to MusicIP, but given that software is no longer commercially available, that doesn't appear to be a great alternative. I know this isn't likely to be a real issue for several years, but wanted to start researching the alternatives well in advance of when the need arises. Re: [slim] Agh! When did this (end of SqueezeBox) start??
It was announced 8/29. Or rather, LogitechUE was announced. The only mention of Squeezebox was the statement that the company would still support LMS and mysb.com. They have retained the Radio, although the new software focuses on ease of use vs flexibility/functionality.
