Re: [slim] [Announce] iPeng 7, the iOS 7 Squeezebox App for iPhone and iPad
Great work Pippin, bought the new app the minute I saw the post on FB. Haven't had the time to look at it in detail yet, but it looks very good and I'm sure the new GUI will grow on me in the coming days, just as it did when I first started out with iPeng. And also I'm very happy to support your hard work once more for me and the GF. With Windows or an iPhone we all find it only logical to buy the new version once it arrives and with iPeng we all had the joy of free updates for the past 5 years. With most apps I see they mainly get bugfixes, iPeng has rely evolved in big steps during that time. That seems very nice John! I for myself am looking forward to a headless client once more, one that exceeds the abilities of the Duet in terms of FLAC-capabilities and ease of setup. It's showing under unconnected players indeed. I also see it in my connected devices on the router, it gets an IP and is in the same network and IP-range as my server. Tonight I'll try to power cycle the controller to see if that helps. Otherwise I guess there's no alternative than to open the cabinet and do a factory reset of the unit. Thank you for your reply! I've already power cycled that one a couple of times, with the server being on. Everytime the device disappears under unconnected players and comes back after a couple of minutes, apparently it has rebooted by that time. I've also disconnected the patch-cable from the receiver, rebooted the router, restarted the server with the Receiver being connected, etc. Oh well, it has worked stable for half a year and it probably would have worked for a couple of years if I wouldn't have been cutting the electricity on all connected devices a couple of times. [slim] Player visible in iPeng, not in LMS, not connecting to server
Amongst several other players, I have a Receiver tucked away above my kitchen. Yesterday I was working on the electricity inside the house and therefor I cut the power on several groups. Now that the power is restored, the Receiver won't play anymore. It's not visible in the LMS web-admin either and when I use Squeezepad I don't see the player either. When using iPeng however, I do see the player, but when I click it, a pop-up comes asking me to choose to which server I should connect it. And when I click on a server, it won't do that. Also using the controller, I can select the player, but then it starts searching for the server and can't find it. When I cut the power to the Receiver the player disappears, when power is restored, it returns. So it actually sees the player, it's not a thing that is left in the cache or something. I've already restarted the server, rebooted the router, had a look on mysb.com to see if it was perhaps connected to there, but nothing seems to help. Anyone care to make a suggestion as to what could be the problem here? Since it's tucked away in a cabin above my kitchen, it's rather hard to see what color the button is, so I'll use that as a last resort. Re: [slim] Better hurry, Squeezeboxes getting more expensive
Prices have gone through the roof during last month, at least here in The Netherlands. I had already gathered the items I needed (that is 2 Touches, 2 radio's and 3 receivers), but then my parents and my sister decided they wanted this great music system too. During the three years I've had the system they never expressed any interest in that regard, and now it's gone, they all of a sudden want a system for their own... :S For my parents I was lucky enough to find a supplier that still had a Touch around for 229 and a Radio for a very decent price too, only 4 weeks ago. Now all shops have run out of them in the mean time, and used Touches are selling for 350+ within days! It's crazy. And for my sister I was lucky enough to source a used Touch with the foil still on for 219 just now. It's nice to see people still believe in this system, but double the price in just a couple of weeks time sounds like a bubble to me. If we're lucky this will last a couple of years probably. But it mainly depends upon what Logitech does with their new devices. If they release a new device for their UE-line, a device that is equal of better than the Touch (at least for the masses...), then the current prices will drop rapidly. I saw one sign of Logitech taking the UE-line marketing more serious now: they where sponsoring a radio-show last week. In my opinion they wouldn't do that if they were only planning on the Radio alone... hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97469 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Ran some tests, takes approx. 22 seconds to load a 1000 track playlist, doesn't matter if it's flac or mp3. Though I have to say that I don't run any heavy plugins like custom browse at the moment. The problem with the 2nd track starting to play has been solved. I deleted iPeng and reinstalled it, the issue was gone after that. And the other issues are gone too after the 2.01 update. Also, iPeng really doesn't influence what track the server plays. And there is no change there. Be that as it may, I have one phone with 1.6.1 that does not show this behavior and one with 2.0 that does do it. I have found the way to reproduce it however: if the players that I want to start playing are switched off and I start them by selecting an album (by clicking the cover art), the entire playlist will be loaded and the 2nd track will start playing. I've tried this 8 times between both phones. during those tries 1.6.1 never showed this behavior and 2.0 did every time. Shuffle play is not turned on. Re: [slim] iPeng, your iPhone Squeezebox Remote, gets even better with version 2.0!
Loving the new layout, though I do find some bugs. Please take this as constructive help and not to criticize your hard work, but I've found that users often don't report bugs and just hope that someone else will... - the hud for volume will sometimes not disappear after the volume has been adjusted. - increasing the volume with the volume bar at the bottom of the screen works intermittently, eg. you can't increase it in one subtle sweap, but have to swipe several times in order to increase the volume by more than 10-15%. - increasing the volume with the volume bar at the bottom of the screen will often result in skipping to a next or previous track. - I've noticed on several occasions that selecting a new album directly from the album list will have the second track on that album play, instead of the 1st as it should (I've tried this with an old iPhone with 1.4.2 and this behaviour could not be reproduced) - battery consumption on my 4 is much higher than it was on the old versions, using the same iOS as before and the same iPeng settings. Perhaps this has been reported by others, but I wasn't able to find input on these issues by others. hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96749 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

pippin wrote: Interesting. I've never seen that. Can you somehow reproduce it? Ah, wait... Does this happen when iPeng also accidentally skips? I can reproduce it quite simple. It happens almost every time I use the volume bar. It briefly flashes once I adjust the volume again, but keeps being displayed. Apart from that, the GUI behaves as if the hud isn't there; items underneath it can still be clicked. pippin wrote: How do you play it? By tapping a track or by tapping the cover? If it's the cover, it's not iPeng's fault, then iPeng just sends a play album command, the rest is done by the server. If it's by tapping a track, I'll have to investigate, I can imagine this could happen I play it by tapping the album cover. But I've done so for 3 years and I've never noticed this behavior. And I've still got an old 3G with 1.6.1 and on that phone I can't replicate it either, but on 2.0 I can. For the record, I'm using a jailbroken version of 5.1.1 on an iPhone 4, but only have one Cydia app installed, being a bluetooth profile selector. If you want I can update the iPeng on my GF's phone, which is a 4S with iOS6. pippin wrote: Hehe... I hear that with _every_ version from somebody. I assume you are talking about battery consumption with the App running? Battery consumption depends a lot on how much you browse and scroll and on how much server communication you've got (which depends on how stable the connection is and how often it breaks down). There is no change whatsoever in iPeng's communication behavior between 1.6 and 2.0, I don't think there is any change in power consumption caused by this redesign. There is one thing that _did_ change, albeit half a year ago, and that is the behavior if you can't reach a server that is still in your server list (because it has WOL set to on or it is manually configured). iPeng now tries to reconnect to that one more frequently and this can indeed cause more power consumption. I had to do this since the old behavior caused issues in some situations where players would not be found at all. And, as always, have an eye on preserve connection, although that should actually have gotten _better_ in 2.0 since it no longer stays active if you lose the server connection. I can imagine this will be a issue that many people complain about once a new version gets released, often not rightly, sometimes it is. iPeng is the app I use the most on my phone, by far, so I am pretty familiar with the behavior. The amount by which the battery is emptied even after a short amount of using iPeng is much more than it was on the 1.5/1.6.x versions. Always have the keep server connection switched on and I have no issues with the server connection or stability. Perhaps you can't see any reason why this would have changed at this time, but as with your first remark: if nobody reports it, then you don't know there might be an issue in this area. ;) hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96749 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Wow, and I thought iPeng just couldn't be improved anymore? Maybe that's just my lack of imagination... :D Still too early to tell since we don't know anything about the new version, but great news that there is something new coming along. Will it work on 3GS/4 and 5, or will it be 5 only? Btw, if I need to buy a new app because it's iOS6, I completely understand. I bought the app 3 years ago, that's 0,007 per day. Meanwhile the app has just been improved over and over again, without any additional costs. Ok, including the app for my gf's phone, the iPad app, playback and the app I bought for my sister it comes to 4 cents a day. Wow, that's crazy! Well... it's a fair price for a great device like the Touch, more realistic than around 200 if you ask me, but it does indicate retailers expect supplies to go down while demand will still be there. Informatique is one of the few retailers that actually show an indication of their suppliers' stock. While this was still there on Thursday, it now shows they've run out of them. If Logitech doesn't provide new Touches anymore, which I don't expect, then this probably means retailers are left with the units they have in stock. [slim] Keep the spirit up guys; just bought a new Radio and used Receiver
There seems to be a lot of (understandable) frustration and insecurity about the latest move made by Logitech. People seem unsure about what to do; staying on board and see what happens, others perhaps jumping the ship hoping that some other platform will fulfill their needs for a longer period of time. I for one rely on the power of this community and hope fantastic guys like Erland and Pippin can provide us with a system that serves our needs for the coming years. I've decided that local music is the only thing that's really important to me. So before the stocks of current Radios are gone, I've just bought myself a brand new SBR to add to my collection. Furthermore I found a guy on ebay that sold a couple of Receivers at a very good price, wanted to buy two from him, but he had only one left. And I'm considering to buy a new Touch before they run out, but I'm not sure at this time. Let's see how prices develop the coming weeks. If this isn't about having faith in the community, I don't know what is. Buying two systems of which you know at least one of them will not be supported if I ever wanted to make the switch to the UE-platform, not something you would normally do. I'm just very happy some guys actually seem to be working on solving the future issues for us now, I'm just sorry I can't be of much assistance on the technical part. But if the initiative needs to be supported by donations or a yearly fee, I'll be more than happy to do so! hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96230 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How many of you have spare squeezeboxes?
I'm not sure what to do, buy a spare unit or not. Especially since I'm moving to a bigger house in a couple of months and might find some good use for an additional player then. We've seen that SB models got very expensive in the past once the stocks dried out, so buying a Touch right now won't be a bad investment anyway. But it might very well be that Logitech is actually thinking of releasing a successor to the Touch. At least that's what I'm guessing, since the Logitech employee in the other thread seems to be rather open on many things, but seems to have some sort of NDA in regard to a new Touch or any other new products that may or may not be released. At this point I have to little information to know wether the new platform will be something I'm willing to go for. I don't use mysb.com, so that's easy enough for me (though I realize it's a big pain for many of the people here). I didn't do much with the plugins available either, so that it becomes more closed is not so much of an issue either. The main criteria will be if Pippin is able to create a app that can control the system in a way like we're used to now. The main issue for me seems to be: can Touch devices that were released during the SBS/LMS-era be firmware-upgraded to work in the new UE-era or not and if so, will you still be able to use iOS/Android devices as a means of controlling them, without being tied to the apps that Logitech releases themselves? hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96198 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Perhaps I'm missing out on something or am I just being naive. But do we have a clear understanding already of what the new UE-system does and what it doesn't do? From what I've seen on the website, it does support streaming services like Spotify and Pandora, so why wouldn't it support many of the other services that are currently available? And if it doesn't do that, what would be the disadvantage of the new UE-platform in comparison to other platforms? AFAIK even with reduced online-services, it will still be on-par with the other music streamers out there. Of course this is all based on speculation, but I don't see any sense in releasing this new concept to market, if they will not be releasing more devices to run on that service. Even Logitech should realize by now that the Radio alone isn't going to help the concept survive. If you read the posts by this Logitech employee (Michael if I recall correctly?), you can definately see he's on some sort of NDA, so he can't provide any info on upcoming devices. Why would they do that if they're not planning on doing so? Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?
I wouldn't count on it. One of the reasons they are pulling the plug I think, is that the platform has become too open. You don't actually need a SB-client anymore to use the server, and with iPeng being able to emulate a player with sync and 48/96khz, even a novice can set it up. And if Logitech isn't selling units anymore, there is no need for them to develop any new devices for it. They won't support that by providing us with all necessary measures to keep that system alive. The sooner everybody surrenders to the new system, the better it is for them... :) hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Even still, the way I see it, the situation is good for all of us. Sonos was getting much publicity because their system could be controlled with their free app, now that Squeezebox has something similar, the platform hopefully becomes more popular. And since the pricing is much friendlier, hopefully the system will become mainstream. With that, it gets more interesting for Logitech to finally bring out some new players. For sure, developers will need to find another way of generating profit out of their apps in order to keep developing. The idea of creating a free/add-version proposed a few pages ago might be a good solution. I don't know about pricing, but I imagine if somebody uses the app for a few months and plays with for half an hour a day, the add-revenues will more than rise over the 7.99 you get when selling the app. -- hvb83 SB Receiver, Marantz SR5004, Harman Kardon HKTS11 SB Radio SB Server 7.5.1 running on a Synology DS210+ NAS iPhone running iPeng 1.2.8 and iPad running iPeng for iPad and SqueezePad hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87212 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

After playing with it for a couple of days, I must say it works great. Though in some cases I still have to get used to the new interface. One thing I would like to suggest for now... In the album-view, you see all covers next to each other. iPeng keeps the original aspect ratio, so if one is a little off, you see it right away. I agree, a 1:1 aspect-ratio in all files would be the nicest, but some of them aren't and it would be a hell of a job to redo that. If you look at the way the app has been designed and how it's been perfected, you just know there is a lot of development in this app. Even if he did earn 20.000 by selling this app, in my opinion, that ain't too much. There are plenty of guys in the appstore developing useless apps, that are poorly designed and shameless copies of concepts designed by others in years gone by, who earn a whole lot more by selling their apps. And iPad is even more scarce, so I'm guessing iPeng HD will deliver even less revenues to the developer. Although ofcourse, most of the knowledge that has been gathered while building iPeng for iPhone can be reused, so development time is probably less too. At the same time, knowing the way Pippin seems to work, he is working hard on finding a smart way for the UI that utilizes the iPad's larger screen. I'm guessing it will be a totally different experience from Squeezepad too, which works fine, but I still find myself using my iPeng everytime because SP doesn't use the large screen in a smart way. Almost demanding an upgrade from iPhone to iPad seems a bit odd in that sense: it will be a totally different app. Anyhow, the point is, ofcourse it's ok for you to decide what you will and will not buy. Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !
I've bought the app but had a very busy weekend, so only had a couple of minutes to play with it last night, which is barely enough to get a good impression. At first glance it seems a lot of features are there and are working correct. My only complaints at this stage are, that the interface looks rather basic, it has more of a W95-feel than an iPad-feel over it. And it doesn't work as intuitive as iPeng does on iPhone. Perhaps it needs some getting used to, but I feel I need to perform a lot more actions before I get to choose an album. So far, I can say, it is usable, but it has a under development feeling over it. Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !
First, let me say I'm very happy with your hard work so far. My previous post might have seemed a little harsh, which isn't my intention. If anything I feel it's great that we now have some competition in the Squeezebox-remote community, when it comes to iPad remotes. The community will only benefit from the competition iPeng HD is getting, which will hopefully give us the best app possible to use as a remote, whether that will be SqueezePad or iPeng HD when it's finally released. bluegaspode;569496 Wrote: As to the look and feel - if anyone comes up with good ideas how to improve it (possibly mock-screens with some gfx-tool) I'm very happy. It's very difficult otherwise to understand what you (and others) would consider a better 'iPad-feel'. It is very functional indeed, everything can be found by following the menu's. But the white textboxes and the font's are somewhat old-fashionate. I'm no graphics expert myself, but perhaps there is someone here who can help in that area? I'll see if I can give you a few examples that could provide you with inspiration. In the mean-time, there are plenty of ideas already posted in the what should iPeng for iPad look like?-topic. bluegaspode;569496 Wrote: Comparison between iPeng and Squeezepad Although I'm comparing it to iPeng lots of times too, especially in regards to look and feel, I respect your choice to follow your own design route and leave iPeng as it is. My wife complains about iPeng alot - to much swiping and screens there for her. (She is forced to use iPeng every day I leave her with an unusable buggy beta-version of SqueezePad *g*). So I guess its a lot to do with 'getting used to'. You're right in saying it has something to do with what you are used to. iPeng felt kind of frustrating in the beginning. But now that I know how it works, I'm delighted, as is my girlfriend. Considering the small screen you have to work with, the current solution is one of the best solutions possible if you need to scroll through large libraries. But of course this applies for iPhone. On an iPad you have a much larger screen to your avail, being able to present a hell of a lot more information on the same screen. At the same time, it's questionable if you would want all that information presented to you all the time... bluegaspode;569496 Wrote: Are there other areas which you consider 'unintuitive' ? What do other users think ? One of the gimmicks of iOs is the way you can swipe to bring menu's or other screens up, and therefor hide stuff you don't need at that point. Re: [slim] Which NAS?
I feel some nuance is in order. The TO starts his post by asking what NAS would suite his needs. Simply implying a NAS is unsuitable to run SBS is just not true. In my opinion it's ok to post alternatives that could better suite his situation. But at the same time, we must realize not everybody who owns a Squeezebox is a computer-enthousiast that knows how to build his own server and install, configure and maintain a linux-distro on it himself. Or like myself, have the time at hand and feel like Googling for a few hours in order to solve a problem that might arise over time. I'm perfectly happy with the Synology DS210+ I have now. It's probably slower than most dual-atom systems out there, not as flexible either. But it suits my needs perfectly; it's fast enough to run SBS in a way that it lives up to my expectations, it's power-consumption is low, it's reliable so that my girlfriend doesn't encounter problems during everyday use and that I don't have to go through embarracing moments when a demonstration to friends goes up in smoke when showing off my fancy music-system and the server is posing problems, Synology takes care of preparing updates that offer new features and for me as a linux-nono I can install them without worrying about having to fiddle with the configuration the entire afternoon. So yes, there are alternatives that are faster, there are alternatives that use even less power, there are alternatives that are more flexible in the future. But at the same time, for most people, a NAS that offers the ability to install SBS on it is probably a very nice solution that will life up to their expectations just perfectly. -- hvb83 hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80747 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
